The bond between a family and their dog has continued to grow and keeps growing stronger throughout the years. This may be the cause as to why so many pet parents are spending on their fur children as if they were a member of their family. Many people have asked why this bond has continued to grow causing the pet parent to spend more and more on their dogs throughout the years. Below are some of the dominant points:

]]>When it comes to dressing up your dog, several opinions exist. Some dog parents view dressing up your dog as a ridiculous activity. Others have a full wardrobe of clothes for their dogs. Personally, I think dressing up your dog expresses a lot about the dog parents and is an expression of their style. Sometimes dressing up your dog is more fashion statement than necessity; however, appropriate times exist when dressing up your dog.
Dogs today are a long way from their wolf ancestors and are far too domesticated. Sometimes dressing them is a necessity for their well-being.
Raincoats– Dogs, like humans, may catch the occasional cold and the responsible parent may want to take some precautions to avoid this. In locations where the weather is wet, dog parents buy raincoats for their pups. Along with how incredibly adorable they are in their shiny yellow raincoat, it’s necessary to keep all their fluff as dry as possible while out on a walk and getting their exercise.
Weather Coats – The same goes with cold weather coats. Areas where the weather can get cold, a dog may need extra warmth where their fur may not be adequate. A dog can become accustomed and acclimated to their domesticated life and may need extra help in drastic circumstances. Also, many dogs are bred to be domestic pets and you shouldn’t be ashamed if your pup needs help to stay warm. There’s no shame with dressing up your dog to keep them warm.
Dog Strollers – I was never a big fan of pet parents taking their dog out in a stroller. I saw it as a bit unfair that the dog did not get to enjoy their walk and exercise. That all changed after a few friends had to get a stroller for their dogs. I was able to broaden my views and be more open-minded. My friends explained they loved going to the dog park but the walk from their place to the dog park was too strenuous and long for their dog. They definitely want to provide their fur baby with some dog interaction and exercise at the dog park, but didn’t want to cause them harm on the journey there.
Below are some of the arguments I’ve heard against dressing up your dog
Uncomfortableness – The comfort level of the dog is called into question. People wonder if the dog is uncomfortable or in pain by that cute little bow tie on their harness or the pig tail on the top of their cute, furry, head. They are concerned the dog is experiencing frustration since the pup cannot actually speak and see that the issue could be avoided. This might be a consideration or possible judgment you’ll face when dressing up your dog up like this.
Hazardous – Some accessories can be a chocking hazard. Adding something unnatural to your pet can be dangerous because it’s a foreign item for them. Your dog can get stuck on something or choke on an accessory if not monitored properly.
Humanizing – Some people treat their dogs like part of the family and others see them as a dog and lower on the totem pole — not on the same level as a human. When they see dogs dressed up with human accessories, they feel uncomfortable of the closeness that the dog parent has with their dog. They also feel that pet owners spend way too much financially on their dogs.

]]>Extending your dog family and bringing a new fur child to your household is a personal question. It truly depends on your lifestyle and the lifestyle of the other members of your household. When truly considering these aspects it makes for a great addition and transition for your household.
My husband and I began to see how much our dog Frankenstein was in need of a companion. She loved going to the dog park and being around other dogs. When we would invite our friends and their dogs to our home, Frankenstein couldn’t have been happier. Instead of jumping right in and adopting a new pup, my husband, and I needed to make and informed and responsible choice — something you need to be aware of before extending your dog family. We felt secure with our decision to adopt Luna, our Bichon mix, after going through the steps below.
When dog parents ask me about extending their dog family, I respond to them with the following questions:
If you already have a four legged creature at home, observe them and note if they are the type of pup that would enjoy a sibling. Some dogs truly blossom into their personalities when another dog is around. Others prefer spending quality time with their human. One important thing we noticed was the personalities of our two dogs blend well. In most dog families, there’s an alpha — the more dominant of the two. We adopted Luna because she was a submissive pup and would accept Frankenstein as the alpha. For us, this was an important consideration — be honest with yourselves about this one before extending your dog family.
Frankenstein, our first fur baby, is a spiffy young girl. I adore her to pieces and could cuddle with her all day. Unfortunately, she is an independent and active pup who doesn’t like to cuddle much. Part of the reason why I wanted a dog in the first place was to have unlimited cuddle time. That’s why when we considered extending our dog family, we knew we wanted a more relaxed lap dog.
People wonder if the cost will double when adopting a new dog. It’s an important consideration when you consider extending your dog family. It makes sense that the cost will double as you will need almost two of everything. You may see that your pups like to share too. For example, my two girls sleep on the same bed. It’s something they’ve done since they were puppies. We’re able to cut costs by purchasing one bed every few months.
Also, their feeding is a unique. Luna likes to wait until Frankie has finished eating, and then she goes to the bowl and finishes what’s left. When we would leave two bowls, one would always go uneaten. It’s good to make sure you are stable enough financially and plan on getting two of everything, but know it may be less in special circumstances and the personalities of your dogs.
I think this question blends well with the first two questions above. It depends on the type of companion you and your family needs. Before extending your dog family, consider the age of your dog, and yourself, and the level of activity required for both a puppy or adult.
I’m an advocate for adopting — I always say, “adopt adopt adopt!” I understand some of the arguments people make about buying a certain breed. Shelters don’t always have what you’re looking for, but organizations exist to help families find specific breeds for adoption. I strongly urge you to adopt and take the time to do some research if you have a specific breed in mind. You’ll be surprised how many purebreds are in need of adoption and a loving home. Adopted pets are great for extending your dog family.

]]>Our neighborhood has a great mix of people and we share a common connection. From retirees to recent college graduates, from new human baby parents and to new fur baby parents. There’s a mix of people who work from home and those with the regular 9 to 5 office jobs. Each person has a different lifestyle, but we’re all connected by the love we share with our dogs.
My interactions with these groups of people have been wonderful. I’ve learned more about the human race and our connection to canines. Dogs truly bring people from different walks of life together. People who, without reason to interact, have the opportunity to build a connection when an adorable four legged dog approaches them. In my experience, this has lead to unique conversations that would be difficult to come across if a dog was not involved.
Today, people don’t walk up to each other and say, ‘hello’ or ask about their lives, views, and hobbies. That would be a bit awkward if done at random. But when a dog is involved, the conversation feels organic, natural, and unforced. It doesn’t feel awkward or random. Making a connection with another human is a lot easier when a dog is involved.
People seek out meaningful connections and friendships; whether they are new to the area or are looking to venture out and meet new people. We, like our dogs, are social creatures at our core. It’s not easy to make a new connection after we graduate, work from home, or even retire. While on my own adventures, I’ve made new connections and had conversations with people in my own neighborhood. Often, people tell me that their favorite part of the day is when they take their four legged friends on a walk or to the dog park. Some people have told me that they have met some of their best friends while on a walk — most of them human.
What I like best is the opportunity it has given me to get to know more people from different walks of life. Each unique connection has created a better understanding of different cultural traditions, views, and thought processes that I never would have had without walking with my dogs and meeting new people. Meeting different people in an organic setting, like a dog park or walking trail, has led to topics of interest that I never knew existed.
This is yet another reason why dogs are so important in our busy lives. They give us a sense of connection to others and a healthy balance. When your life become too busy with work or chores, break away with your furry friends and go for a walk. It could change your life.

]]>My immediate family has grown. At one time, it was just myself (Alex), my husband (whose name is Alex as well), and our fur baby girl, Frankenstein. We loved our little family but noticed that little Frankie needed a companion. She is an incredibly social little girl who loves to be around other dogs and humans. However, taking her to the dog park wasn’t enough. We saw how needy she was so we made the decision the adopt a little furry sister for her.
A lot of changes came with our new family member, especially with our daily ritual to take Frankie to the dog park. We had to modify and work around Luna as she is the complete opposite of her sister. Luna is calm, introverted, reserved, and only likes to be around a small number of dogs. Sometimes she can barely handle being around her sister Frankie. We have the dog park several tries as we know how much all of us benefited from it. After several tries, we began to see how unhappy and anxious Luna would get. We needed to find a dog park alternative.
Below are some of the solutions we came up with so Luna can enjoy her daily exercises, Frankie can socialize, and my husband and I can enjoy all the benefits of dog parks.
It’s best to find what works best for each individual in your family. Some thrive on a lot of socialization and others do not. It’s important to come up with a plan that benefits all. Of course, everyone will not always be completely happy with the result but as long as everyone is happy together, your doggie outing is a win!

]]>Dog parks are a great getaway for both the parent and the fur child. It’s the perfect place to socialize, exercise, take in the fresh air and break away from the demands of everyday life. Dog parks are an oasis of both fun and relaxation.
My two fur children, Frankenstein and Luna love the dog park. Before we adopted Luna, my husband and I would take Frankie to the dog park; she is a social pup and loves being around humans and furry friends. We noticed the benefits both Frankie and my husband and I received.
Hsere are the benefits we saw with Frankie and I’m sure you’ll see as well:
Improved Social Skills – The dog park helps a dog socialize with both humans and dogs. My husband and I are active with our dogs and a friendly and social dog allows us to take her out with us dining, shopping, and on vacations.
Teachable Moments – The dog park is a setting that allows owners the opportunity to correct a dog’s behavior. This is an opportunity we would not have had with Frankie if we kept her at home or gave her private walks.
Burn Off Some Energy – The dog park allows a dog to burn off some of that pent-up energy. Frankie is no different, she always returns home happy and ready for a nap. This allows us to complete more of our tasks at home as Frankie is worn out and doesn’t demand so much attention.
Regular Potty Times – The dog park helps reinforce a regular bathroom schedule. Frankie keeps to a regular potty time. She knows when it’s time to go number 1 and number 2. The dog park is a good way to potty train puppies and adult dogs; they are creatures of habit and do well when time at the dog park is a part of the dog’s everyday routine. Additionally, it makes it much easier for the parent to not find yucky accidents in the home.
Here are a few benefits my husband and I receive from the dog park:
Take A Break – The dog park can be something to look forward to and a great part of your day. We are able to take a nice little break from work or break up the monotony of errands and chores.
Enjoy The Simple Things – The fresh air, the nature around us, and most importantly all the cute dogs around us filled us with so much joy and laughter.
Meet New People – The dog park is a great place for your dog to make new friends. On top of that, you’re able to meet new human friends in the neighborhood. This is great if you are new to a city or the area. For us, this was important as we didn’t know many people in our area and it was wonderful getting to know our new neighbors!
Improve Your Dog Parenting Skills – The dog park is a great place for exchanging ideas, tips, and tricks with other fur parents. This is important for new dog owners.
Try Something New – I recommend giving dog parks a try if you and your pup have not yet visited one. It’s important to note that it’s not for every dog, some pups prefer to be on their own or prefer to be around a smaller number of furry friends.
