As a backdrop to our roundtable discussion on southern French wines we invited our panel to explore a selection from across the region’s myriad vineyards.

ANDREAS LARSSON :
Bright light golden colour. Pure nose blending young fruit like pear, peach and ripe lemon with crushed almond and nuts. Medium weight on the palate with a gentle skin bitterness and a fresh backbone, youthful fruit and a medium to long finish.
ANDREAS LARSSON :Medium deep ruby red colour. Sweet nose of jammed plum, fig and sweet fruit with garrigue and pepper notes. Bold and broad structure with rather mild tannin, unctuous sweet fruit, plum and Kirsch notes with a mild spiciness, and a dense and lingering finish. ]]>
Bright young straw colour with a green hue. Fresh nose with floral and herbal
notes, garrigue and citrus zest. Bright freshness on the palate, light to medium weight with nice balance in a light, crisp and refreshing style.
]]>ANDREAS LARSSON:Dark ruby colour with a purple hue. Pure and perfumed nose with dark fruit, violet, cassis and bouquet garni notes. Dense palate, nicely polished even if young with a fine oakiness, concentrated dark fruit, fine garrigue and peppery spiciness, and a long and well-built finish with dense but ripe tannin. Ambitious and potent. ]]>
The beginning of the year was marked by a rain deficit with cool spring temperatures. This situation will last until May. As a result, the growth of the vine is rather slow. The pressure of cryptogamic diseases is limited and easily manageable.
In July the temperatures are average, some rains fall on certain sectors but are quickly dried by a Mistral very present throughout the month and until the beginning of August.
The summer was particularly hot and dry with a water deficit which is accentuated week after week. This very hot daytime situation which accentuates the drought continues until 15 September. It had never been so hot for a month of September!
Finally the rains of the 15th and 16th September will put an end to the heavy heat. These rains were beneficial, especially for the Domaine des Anges which is in a late area. They made it possible to restart the maturation . The very stable climatic conditions and the sanitary condition which remained excellent, throughout the period of maturity, led to very promising harvests.
These drought conditions had the consequence of obtaining grapes which therefore had small, even very small berries, very colored rich in sugars and acidity because maturation and concentration had been combined under the effect of heat and drought.
The red wines have very intense and very deep robes, in the nose, they are very fruity with aromas of ripe red fruits, but also of fresh red fruits. There is also sweetness in the mouth, the wines are gourmet, ample and velvety with beautiful tannic structures.
The beautiful acidity of this vintage allowed the elaboration of pretty white and rosé with superb shades frank and bright which are the promise of a fresh aromatic pronounced.
It is therefore an exceptional quality that marks the 2016 vintage where all the conditions have been combined to produce great red wines of guard of a perfect balance.
Le début de l’année fut marquée par un déficit en pluie avec des températures au printemps fraiches. Cette situation durera jusqu’en Mai. En conséquence, la croissance de la vigne est assez lente. La pression des maladies cryptogamiques est limitée et facilement gérable.
En juillet les températures sont dans la moyenne, quelques pluies éparses arrosent certains secteurs mais sont rapidement séchées par un Mistral très présent tout au long du mois et jusqu’au début août.
L’été a été particulièrement chaud et sec avec un déficit en eau qui s’accentue semaine après semaine. Cette situation très chaude en journée qui accentue la sécheresse se prolonge jusqu’au 15 septembre. Il n’avait jamais fait aussi chaud pour un mois de septembre!
Un épisode pluvieux les 15 et 16 septembre va mettre un terme aux grosses chaleurs. Ces pluies ont fait beaucoup de bien, surtout pour le Domaine des Anges qui est sur un secteur tardif. Elles ont permis de relancer la maturation.. Les conditions climatiques très stables et l’état sanitaire qui est resté excellent, tout au long de la période de maturité, ont conduit à des vendanges qui se sont étalées sur plusieurs semaines.
Ces conditions de sécheresse ont eu pour conséquences d’obtenir des raisins qui présentaient donc de petites, voire très petites baies, très colorées riches en sucres et en acidité car maturation et concentration s’étaient conjuguées sous l’effet de la chaleur et de la sécheresse.
Les vins rouges ont des robes très intenses et très profondes, au nez, ils sont très fruités avec des arômes de fruits rouges mûrs, mais également de fruits rouges frais. Il y a également de la sucrosité en bouche, les vins sont gourmands, amples et veloutés avec de belles structures tanniques.
Les belles acidités de ce millésime ont permis l’élaboration de jolis blancs et rosés avec de superbes teintes franches et vives qui sont la promesse d’une fraicheur aromatique prononcée.
C’est donc une qualité exceptionnelle qui marque le millésime 2016 où toutes les conditions ont été réunies pour produire de grands vins rouges de garde d’un équilibre parfait.
