The position is for a period of four years. The nominal length of the PhD programme is three years. The fourth year is distributed as 25 % each year and will consist of teaching and other duties. The objective of the position is to complete research training to the level of a doctoral degree. Admission to the PhD programme is a prerequisite for employment, and the programme period starts on commencement of the position.

Student position: Regional CO2 exchange budgets in Hudson and James Bay

We are seeking a motivated student for a graduate studentship (PhD or MSc) to study sea-air CO2 fluxes within the Canadian Arctic and subarctic coastal zones. The project will investigate physical and biological processes controlling the CO2 fluxes, and contribute to the implementation of strategies for the estimation of regional maps of surface pCO2 and budgeting CO2 sea-air flux exchange using various data sets, including ship-based in-situ data, reanalysis products, remotely sensing datasets and machine learning techniques. The student will have numerous opportunities to participate in field campaigns based out of coastal communities and research vessels within the Canadian Arctic. Particular regions of interest are Hudson Bay and James Bay. The student will work within a multidisciplinary university team housed within the Centre for Earth Observation Science, (CEOS; umanitoba.ca/ceos), Department of Environment & Geography at the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Canada, and under the supervision of CEOS researchers: Drs. Tim Papakyriakou, Zou Zou Kuzyk, and K. Brown, along with team of collaborating investors, including: Drs. Mohamed Ahmed (Esri Canada) and David Capelle (DFO). This research is community partnered, and as such the successful candidate will work closely with engaged and highly motivated community members. The successful candidate (for PhD) will have a MSc (or equivalent) degree in oceanography (chemical or biological), Geography, or related field, preferably with demonstrated experience with GIS and/or remote sensing applications, programming, and data analysis. MSc candidates are welcome to apply. The successful candidate must bring a strong work ethic and desire to contribute toward team-based science. The studentship is fully funded as part of existing NSERC and DFO projects.

Brief Background: The oceans’ uptake of anthropogenic CO2 has slowed the effects of climate change, however, the prolonged uptake of CO2 has caused a reduction in seawater pH, leading to ocean acidification. The situation in the coastal zone is complicated through the delivery of large amounts of carbon and nutrients through river inflow and coastal erosion impacting both regional CO2 budgets and susceptibility to ocean acidification. Greenhouse gas induced warming in the northern high latitudes is far outpacing the global average, with impacts on sea ice, permafrost and regional hydrology with poorly understood spin-off effects on carbon cycling in the region’s coast zone. Arctic and subarctic coastal zones encompass some of the most productive ocean regions globally, and many of the large rivers feeding the marine systems have been modified for hydroelectric production, impacting the deliver of freshwater, carbon and nutrients. Rapid impacts of climate change are super-imposed upon by changes in the ocean environment brought about through land- and water-use projects, further challenging our ability to characterize contemporary and future CO2 budgets, and rates of ocean acidification. New book: SCORESBY SUND - Discovering North-East Greenland

SCORESBY SUND is the fourth book in the series: "Discovering North-East Greenland".

In this book, the journey of discovery goes to the area that borders the large North-East Greenland National Park in the south. In addition to a rich fauna, the Scoresby Sund area also contains some of the most magnificent nature in North-East Greenland, indeed in all of Greenland. And then the Scoresby Sund fjord is actually the world's longest fjord, approximately 350 km long! Here in this unique natural area is also the small Greenlandic town of Ittoqqortoormiit, which with its approximately 350 inhabitants is the northernmost town on Greenland's east coast.

SCORESBY SUND gives, in pictures and words, a broad impression of the entire Scoresby Sund region and its history. The book has 172 pages and, like its three predecessors, is beautifully bound and packed with more than 250 photos. The texts are in parallel Danish/English.

Peter Schmidt Mikkelsen is a former member of the renowned military dogsledge patrol Sirius, director of the North-East Greenland Company Nanok and author of a number of books about Greenland. He has traveled the Kong Oscar Fjord area and the rest of North-East Greenland numerous times over more than 40 years.

Graduate students with interests in Arctic sea ice are welcomed to participate in a training cruise aboard the Norwegian icebreaker Kronprins Haakon. The ship will serve as a home and floating laboratory while we anchor to an ice floe and study the physical properties, microbiological communities, and carbon chemistry within and beneath the sea ice. During the field school, participating students will hear from current UiT researchers on related topics, including methods related to snow and sea ice physics, sea ice biogeochemistry, bio-optics, ocean turbulence and Blueye robotics. Through lectures, hands-on training and laboratory work, early career researchers will finish the field school with a comprehensive understanding of this complex and rapidly changing system, while having a foundation in the skills that are required to study it as part of their respective degrees.

The Arctic Science Partnership (ASP) held its12’th annual meeting and discussed ongoing and future projects. Due to corona it has not been possible to meet physically the last two years. Finally, it was possible and collaborators from several universities from Europe and Canada met in Nice. It was impressive to see how many projects are taking place including an increasing amounts of joint projects between institutions. We discussed what should be the focus over the next year of ASP and identified three new ideas that will be developed further to expand collaboration between the partners.

Stable, high-performance digital infrastructure with guaranteed bandwidths for the entire world and a focus on quality and services must also be an option in Greenland. There are a number of research jobs in Greenland, and the value of their work can be multiplied if they e.g. can get access to have large amounts of data transferred in line with researchers in the rest of the world. In addition, there are many research projects that rely on various types of sensors and equipment located in the vast country. They can now get dedicated network connections. Today, both researchers and institutions in Greenland are referred to network connections, which have the same problems as commercial networks everywhere else in the world in relation to research traffic, namely that there can be problems in relation to having the same quality guarantees all the way to the other end of the the world that one has in relation to one's local connection. It is especially heavier data traffic, where it is difficult to transfer large amounts of data internationally with the commercial networks due to their setup. Therefore, DeiC's board has decided to establish a collaboration with Greenland to establish a Research Network in Greenland. A Research Network in Greenland will mean a direct connection that guarantees bandwidth all the way to the other end - all over the world. This offer has not previously existed in Greenland, as one of quite a few countries in the world. At the same time, a research network in Greenland will also mean access to all the services that are part of the Research Network, e.g. eduroam, WAYF, DKCERT services.

Past changes in ocean circulation and climate off Greenland

Research area and project description:
The Ph.D. project will focus on investigating past changes in climate and ocean circulation off Greenland. This will be done through the multi-proxy study of marine sediment cores from Greenland shelves and fjords to establish longer time series of recent centuries and millennia and compare these to modern ocean and atmospheric conditions.

Within this framework, the specific approach of the Ph.D. project will be decided in collaboration with the successful candidate, but potential studies may include a combination of micropaleontology (foraminifera, diatoms), sedimentology and/or geochemistry (organic biomarkers, XRF core scanning data, stable isotopes, CaCO₃, TOC).

The position is part of the GreenShelf project funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark (DFF) and the work will be carried out in an international research environment.

The European Space Agency (ESA), recently announced that Harmony has been selected as ESA’s tenth Earth Explorer Mission to go forward. Congratulations to Dr. Julienne Stroeve and her team, who had considerable input to the ESA Harmony science team on sea ice applications in support of this up-coming mission.

The Alberta Film & Television Awards ("The Rosies") recently awarded the GENICE video as the Best Educational Production. Congratulations to Drs. Casey Hubert (UCalgary) and Gary Stern (UManitoba) on their innovative program.

The AGU Fall Meeting 2022 will be held in Chicago from Dec 12 - 16 with a hybrid model of in person and virtual. Early bird registration is until November 2nd.

UNLEASH Innovation Lab in Greenland 2022

What is the Innovation Lab in Greenland?

The Greenland Innovation Lab will gather young people from across the Arctic and Nordic regions to develop innovative solutions to sustainability challenges that are shared across the region.

Specifically, the Regional Innovation Lab will focus on developing innovative solutions within three thematic tracks:

Education
Health, including mental health
Biodiversity and climate change

When and where is the Innovation Lab happening?

It will take place in Nuuk, Greenland, on August 20-27, 2022

What does the program during the Innovation Lab consist of?

The 200 selected paricipants will be welcomed to Nuuk, Greenland on the 20th of August with a big celebration, including cultural performances and speeches from thought-leaders and SDG experts. The Opening Ceremony will introduce the talents to each other and the program for the week and allow for networking and knowledge-sharing.

Over the next few days, the teams will be immersed in developing their solutions through human-centered design thinking. This includes an innovation process where facilitators will guide the participants through different stages of problem framing, ideation, prototyping and testing their SDG solution. On the final days, the talents will get to pitch their solutions to receive prizes at a formal Award Show.

The Lab will conclude with a big Closing Ceremony on August 26^th, when sustainability leaders will provide insights and tips for their journey ahead. After the Lab, talents will have the possibility of continuing to develop their solutions and personal development, supported by UNLEASH, local mentors, implementation experts, and more. The talents will also be invited to be part of UNLEASH’s vibrant community of thousands of passionate individuals who have joined our journey towards the 2030 Agenda.
