Drinking coffee may reduce the risk of multiple sclerosis

People who drink four to six cups of coffee a day may be less likely to develop multiple sclerosis, according to an international research published on February 26th. "Caffeine intake was associated with reduced risk of Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases," said study author Ellen Mowry, of Johns Hopkins Medical School in Baltimore, Maryland, in the United States. "Our study shows that coffee intake may also protect against multiple sclerosis, reinforcing the idea that the substance may have protective effects on the brain," he added. An American study and another Swedish - conducted before the annual meeting of the American Academy of Neurology in Washington - compared, each over 1,000 MS patients with a similar number of healthy people. Scientists tracked the amount of coffee that individuals with multiple sclerosis ate one, five and ten years before symptoms start to appear. After considering other factors such as age, sex, smoking, body mass index and sun exposure, the Swedish study found that "compared with people who drank at least six cups of coffee a day a year before symptoms appear, those who drank no more than once coffee and half a day increased the risk of developing multiple sclerosis. " Similar protective effects were observed in those who drank a lot of coffee between five and ten years before symptoms appear. The American study showed that that "people who did not drink coffee would be one and a half more likely to develop the disease than those who drank four or more cups of coffee a day the year before the onset of symptoms." More studies are needed to determine if the caffeine in coffee has an impact on relapses, long-term disabilities related to multiple sclerosis. The incurable disease of the central nervous system affects 2.3 million people worldwide. The study was conducted by the Medical Research Council Swedish, by the US National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and the National Institute on Aging.

Five cups of coffee a day can prevent Parkinson's disease and liver cancer

It may seem an exaggerated amount, but five cups of coffee a day can prevent a number of diseases, according to a health report by the US government.
Experts who make up the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee a group that helps the US to formulate dietary guidelines, from school meals to packaging labels, indicate that consumption may decrease the risk of developing diabetes, heart disease, Parkinson's disease and liver cancer.
"I do not mean that coffee cure cancer. Nobody thinks that. But there is no evidence that the consumption of the drink increases the risk of the disease. What we know is that just the opposite happens", explains the nutritionist Tom Brenna, of Cornell University.
The recommendation of the committee is that the ideal daily intake of coffee is three to five cups. The scientists did not found greatest benefits where coffee consumption was higher than indicated.
They even emphasize that pregnant women should consult a doctor to know the indicated amount of the drink, but suggested that two cups is enough.
Studies show that not exaggerated intake of coffee can bring other health benefits, such as lower incidence of tinnitus, reducing the risk of liver cancer and disease prevention.

ICO publishes report on the coffee market

The ICO publishes in a monthly basis, the Report on Coffee Market. In the January 2015 edition, highlights, with regard to Brazil, the time observed was the main driving force in coffee prices, which first rose, then fell again. The drought in Brazil in early January pushed up prices. The forecast of rain for the end of January, however, interrupted this brief recovery. However, the rainfall levels in Brazil are still below average, compromising the crop of 2015/16, the report shows.
Also according to the ICO, which represents producers and consumers worldwide countries, the price of the monthly average reached their lowest levels since February 2014 (down 1.6%) and a sense of low market continued to exercise downward pressure on prices. Exports of coffee year 2014/15, in turn, remained strong. A reduction of 5.5% in exports of Arabica’s (to 5.2 million bags) was matched by an increase of 9.9% in exports Robusta (to 3.6 million). In 2014, exports hit a record, reaching 111.7 million bags, the highest volume that has registration. This performance resulted primarily from shipments from Brazil, which increased from 31.5 million bags in 2013 to 36.3 million in 2014.
The report also demonstrates, among other relevant data and information of world coffee production, exports from Vietnam increased, reaching 25 million bags, as well as Colombia, which increased from 9.7 million bags in 2013 to 11 million in 2014. In contrast, exports of Central America, in most cases, crashed in 2014, for the rust outbreak continued to affect production, but also in Peru and Mexico. And yet, volume and value of world exports, total production in exporting countries, stocks and world consumption, among other relevant analyses and comparative graphs.

Colombia plans to increase coffee production in 2015

Coffee production in Colombia in 2015 should be between 12.5 million and 13 million bags of 60 kilos, an increase over the previous year, with favourable weather, the incorporation of new coffee plantations to the industrial park and increased productivity said the manager of the National Coffee Growers Federation on Thursday.
Colombia, the world's largest producer of washed Arabica coffee, saw a crop of 12.1 million bags in 2014, an annual increase of 11.5%, which led to production to its historical levels after the failure to meet targets crops for four years, due to heavy rains.
"The harvest will be better than last year. Projections indicate that Colombia can be between 12.5 and 13 million bags this year," said in an interview with Reuters Luis Genaro Muñoz, the manager of the National Coffee Growers Federation.
He said that the Colombian coffee industry is experiencing a good time due to international market prices, the devaluation of the local currency against the dollar and increasing global consumption.
