Here are some additional reminders for the coming competition cycles:

  • $20,000 prize for 1st and $10,000 prize for 2nd! *$2,500 of each prize is sent directly to the PI as a stipend.
  • NASA MITTIC is offering two opportunities to compete: Fall or Spring.
    • Proposals for NASA MITTIC Fall are accepted from August 7, 2023, through October 16, 2023.
    • Proposals for NASA MITTIC Spring are accepted from January 3, 2024, through March 13, 2024.
  • Teams can use any NASA Intellectual Property (IP) from the patent portfolio as the basis for their spinoff concept. A list of 45 sample technologies can be found on our website but a NASA MITTIC proposal may utilize any NASA IP.

NASA’s Human Exploration Rover Challenge (HERC) is accepting proposals for its 2024 competition – its 30th competition year! Student teams are challenged to design, build, test, and compete with a human-powered rover capable of traversing challenging terrains and a specialty tool for completing simulated Artemis mission tasks. Teams earn points by presenting designs and documentation to expert panels, engaging with other students in STEM education, and successfully completing course obstacles and mission tasks at the in-person culminating event. The challenge will be held April 19-20, 2024, in Huntsville, Alabama.

2024 Theme: Advancing Aviation for Natural Disasters
As climate change increases the frequency and intensity of many natural disasters, NASA Aeronautics asks collegiate teams to conceptualize aviation-related system(s) that can be onboarded to improve aerial disaster management efforts immediately and into the next ~10 years.
Based on a review of proposal and video submissions, up to 8 finalist teams will be selected to receive an $8,000 stipend to develop a final technical paper, an infographic, and to present at the 2024 Gateways to Blue Skies Competition Forum at NASA’s Ames Research Center in Mountain View, CA, May 30-31, 2024.

The solicitation exclusively seeks proposals that are responsive to one of three topics:

·    Earth and Global Navigation Satellite System-Independent Position Navigation and Timing for Small Spacecraft

·    Edge Computing and Machine-Learning Architectures, Software, Platforms, and Devices for Small Spacecraft

·    High Specific Power Systems and Thermal Control for Small Spacecraft

Only accredited U.S. universities with a campus located in the U.S. are eligible to submit proposals. Partnering with a NASA Center is required (see solicitation for complete eligibility and teaming requirements).

Anticipated Award Amounts: Maximum of $225,000 each year for up to two years ($450,000 maximum) per award. In addition, a NASA civil servant or JPL employee labor allocation of up to 0.5 full-time equivalent (FTE) per award, per year will be available to support NASA partner(s) involvement. Proposal teams can also request up to $30,000 of procurement funding for the NASA partner(s) to cover NASA expenses in the collaboration. This procurement funding may be used by the NASA partner(s) to purchase hardware or for use of NASA test facilities that support the partnership. Subject to approval, USTP projects that are selected for a subsequent flight demonstration through CSLI or FO or other means may receive supplemental funds, through a funded extension of the basic Cooperative Agreement, to support the demonstration (see solicitation for further details). NASA reserves the right to negotiate the scope and magnitude of the proposed effort, cost/price terms, and any other terms, as appropriate with selected offerors.

The goals of the USTP appendix include collaboration with university teams that have experience in small spacecraft development and the extension of support to colleges and universities that have little or no previous involvement in this field. Colleges and universities with experience in small spacecraft development are encouraged to team with other colleges and universities to address these dual goals.

This solicitation uses a two-step selection process. Mandatory Preliminary Proposals (MPP) are due by Tuesday, May 16 2023 and must be submitted electronically via NSPIRES. Following a review process of the MPP, selected proposers will receive an invitation to submit a Full Proposal. Full Proposals must be submitted electronically through NSPIRES by an authorized organizational representative and are due on or before Tuesday, July 18 2023.

The financial and programmatic support for University Smallsat Technology Partnerships comes from the Small Spacecraft Technology (SST) program, in cooperation with the Flight Opportunities (FO) program, both within STMD.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW:
The National Center for Earth and Space Science Education announces Student Spaceflight Experiments Program (SSEP) Mission 18 to the International Space Station. This opportunity gives students across your institution the ability to design and propose microgravity experiments to fly in low-Earth orbit on the International Space Station (ISS). Experiments are designed to real world engineering and technology constraints imposed by the flight certified mini-lab that must be used, and the nature of flight operations to and from Low Earth Orbit. One experiment at each institution will be selected to fly to ISS on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launching from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in FL. Your experiment will launch from historic pad 39A, the same pad from which all Apollo missions to the Moon launched, and 82 Space Shuttle missions. Astronauts aboard ISS will operate the experiment 4-6 weeks before it is returned to Earth and to your student flight team for analysis. SSEP is not a simulation. We are truly inviting your institution and students to be part of America’s Space Program.

A college or university can also engage hundreds of students in mission patch art and design competitions – as possibly outreach to local school districts, with two patches selected to fly with the flight experiment. SSEP is therefore an authentic STEAM initiative. We invite institutions to use their mission patch competitions to also celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo Moon missions, and humans returning to the Moon in likely 2024 with Artemis.

An important consideration – the expectation is that faculty mentors in a participating 2- or 4-year college or university will engage at least 30 undergraduate students over 9 weeks of experiment design and proposal writing spanning September 1 through November 3, 2023. Students will form into at least 10 teams, each team designing a microgravity experiment in a science discipline of their choice. Each team writes a formal proposal to make the case for why their experiment should be selected for flight to ISS. Your students will be engaged in a very real research proposal competition, focusing on technical writing, mirroring the experiences of professional scientists and engineers. A national review board meeting in Washington, DC, will select the flight experiment for your institution, and do the same for each of the other Mission 18 participating communities.

The Student Spaceflight Experiments Program (SSEP) provides a fully authentic research competition as a STEM Project Based Learning experience. Launch of the Mission 18 flight experiments is currently projected for Spring 2023. Mission 18 occurs across the 2023-24 academic year.

The 2024 HuLC competition seeks near-term, innovative solutions for Human Landing System (HLS) challenge areas…specifically addressing the mitigation of lunar Plume-Surface Interaction (PSI).
Interested teams have a full year to prepare and submit proposals by the deadline of March 4, 2024. HuLC solicits proposals for innovative, systems-level solutions that can help NASA understand, mitigate, and manage the impacts of lunar PSI – with the ability to be implemented within 3-5 years. The potential solutions teams can propose to could include, but are not limited to, the following categories:
  • Trade Studies on Landing Trajectories that Minimize PSI
  • Reduction / Mitigation of Erosion (Cratering) and Ejecta during Descent, Landing, and Ascent
  • Development of PSI Flight Instrumentation / Measurement Methods and Concepts
  • Tracking Dust During Descent, Landing, and Ascent
  • Instrumentation Performance Through the Dust Cloud During Landing
  • HLS Asset Safety (ejecta damage, excessive lander heating, etc.)
  • PSI Modeling and Validation
HuLC is open to teams of undergraduate and graduate students at accredited colleges and universities in the United States. Minority-Serving Institutions (MSIs) are encouraged to apply. Based on a review of initial proposals received by March 2024, up to 12 teams will be selected to continue developing their proposed concepts. Each finalist team will receive a $7,000 stipend to facilitate full participation in a competitive design review at a Forum in Huntsville, Alabama in June 2024.

RESEARCH OPPORTUNITY

The Student Airborne Research Program (SARP) is an eight-week summer internship program for rising senior undergraduate students to acquire hands-on research experience in all aspects of a scientific campaign using one or more NASA Airborne Science Program flying science laboratories (aircraft used for SARP include the DC-8, P-3B, Sherpa and ER-2).

The NASA Airborne Science Program mantains a fleet of aircraft used for studying Earth system processes, calibration/validation of space-borne observations, and prototyping instruments for possible satellite missions. SARP participants will assist in the operation of instruments onboard an aircraft to sample atmospheric chemicals, and/or to image land and water surfaces in multiple spectral bands.

Research areas include atmospheric chemistry, air quality, ecology, and ocean biology. Along with airborne data collection, students will participate in taking measurements at field sites. The challenge will task student teams to design, build and demonstrate a system that can convey lunar regolith (or soil) both horizontally and vertically. Regolith conveyance is a key technology to enable the use of lunar soil for resource processing, construction, and manufacturing on the Moon.

The challenge is in its second year and while the inaugural competition was an overwhelming success, we’d like to expand its geographical participation among our U.S. student team entries to match the diverse international team submissions.  Please consider sharing this opportunity with your students to design & build a regolith transport solution for the moon for the 2023 OVER THE DUSTY MOON CHALLENGE. Entry deadline is Dec 23rd for OTDM Phase I team submissions.

Lunar regolith is an important feedstock for construction, mineral processing, and other ISRU activities.
