It’s a healthcare conference focused on identifying and implementing practical, scalable approaches to improving patient care and outcomes. The programme will examine patient-centred models of care, technology-enabled services and community-based delivery, particularly in the context of reducing hospital dependency and supporting care in the home.

Through case studies and expert-led discussions, the event will explore service redesign, digital innovation, cross-sector collaboration and patient involvement in care planning. Attendees will gain knowledge of current initiatives and practical approaches that may be applied within their own clinical or organisational settings. The conference will address key healthcare challenges and consider evidence-informed strategies to improve access, quality and continuity of care.

Now in its second year, this solutions-driven gathering tackles some of the most pressing challenges facing patients in Ireland today. The inaugural event last year turned out to be a great success with over 200 attendees including patient organisations, healthcare professionals, policymakers, and industry, with a strong focus on amplifying patient voices and sharing practical insights. This year COPD Support Ireland is taking part in the Patient Village, which provides organisations with a platform to connect directly with attendees and raise awareness of their work.

If you are a Patient or work for a Patient Group, there are a limited number of free places available to attend this event and you can register for one of these places by clicking on the link below. So, I got a brain wave that I would run the marathon in memory of Olive, in aid of COPD and to raise awareness and do some fundraising at the same time for this wonderful organisation. That would be my drive and determination to succeed.

My training started on the first of July 2025, running 4 days per week for the next 4 months ending with the marathon itself on the 26th of October. I got great encouragement from people donating money for my fundraising, and when times got tough during the marathon, it was those people, COPD and especially Olive that kept me going.

I would like to thank COPD for allowing me to fundraise on their behalf, to everyone who sponsored me and especially my family for putting up with me during the 4 months of training, it was an honour and a pleasure, thank you all so much.

On World COPD Day, COPD Support Ireland was proud to join Senator Linda Nelson Murray in Leinster House for an Oireachtas lunch bringing together cross-party members committed to improving care for people living with COPD across Ireland. They discussed the importance of continued support for the HSE’s national Integrated Model of Care for COPD, as this has been a key driver of improved COPD care in Ireland over the past five years.

Thank you to all Oireachtas members who joined us on World COPD Day and to our members for sharing their experiences living with COPD.

COPD affects an estimated 380,000 people nationwide, yet up to 270,000 may remain undiagnosed. Our new survey of almost 300 people living with COPD shows:

    • 75% first sought help because of shortness of breath
    • Nearly 60% feel their overall COPD care is better now than 5+ years ago
    • But almost 6 in 10 still do not have a personalised care plan
    • Many are struggling with the cost of living, particularly the price of heating – a serious concern as cold homes can worsen COPD symptoms

As we head into the winter season, our message is clear: Get vaccinated against flu, Covid-19 and pneumonia, and don’t ignore persistent cough or breathlessness – talk to your GP.
