Temple University's Music Preparatory Division, or "Temple Music Prep" for short, is a program located in the heart of center city, Philadelphia, that provides high quality, non-credit music and dance instruction, and related activities to the Community on behalf of the Boyer College of Music and Dance, and Temple University at-large.

World-renowned violinists Sarah Chang and Elena Urioste, as well as several members of the Philadelphia Orchestra share something in common: they were all participants of Temple Music Prep. I also started my own professional career right after graduating from Curtis as a theory teacher and chamber music coach at Temple Music Prep. To this day, I'm not sure who had more fun in my theory classes - the kids jumping up and down on the shaving cream staff lines I painted on the floor or the parents laughing outside my class! Anyway, I digress. This month, Temple Music Prep will be celebrating 30 years of excellence with a series of performances featuring students from their Center for Gifted Young Musicians, culminating in a gala concert on Saturday, May 13, 7:30 PM at the Church of the Holy Trinity on Rittenhouse Square.

Before we visit some of the amazing students and teachers at Temple Music Prep, I want to point out that Temple Music Prep provides quality music and dance instruction to everyone at all ages and ability levels, from their early childhood and Suzuki programs to adult classes and community ensembles. In fact, some of the students we will listen to started participating at Temple Music Prep when they were toddlers themselves.

Jeff Russo, Composer, Songwriter, and founding member of Tonic

Jeff Russo was one of the two founding members of the rock band "Tonic", perhaps best known for their number one hit in the 90s, "If You Could Only See". Nowadays, Jeff is in demand as a TV and film composer, having scored music for hit shows like "Fargo", "American Gothic", and can currently be heard on the new FX Marvel series, "Legion".

Welcome to A Musical Life. I'm Hugh Sung. Jeff Russo is a two-time GRAMMY® and Emmy-nominated musician who taught himself to play the guitar as a child before going on to become one of the founding members of the multi-platinum selling rock band, "Tonic". Their debut album, "Lemon Parade", posted three singles in the U.S. Mainstream rock Charts' Top 10 back in 1996, with the song, "If You Could Only See," rocketing to number one. David Hart, Guitarist and Entrepreneur

David Hart is the developer of the G4 Guitar Method, a method based on his two decades of teaching and opening schools throughout Australia. Carol Jantsch, Principal Tubist of The Philadelphia Orchestra

Carol Jantsch became the first female tuba player to win a major symphony orchestra position while she was still a senior attending the University of Michigan back in 2006. In addition to her duties as principal tuba of the Philadelphia Orchestra, Carol has been active as a tuba soloist, appearing in recital and in concerto settings with orchestras and ensembles around the world, and now has started her own tuba cover band called "Tubular".

Carol Jantsch is a stunning virtuoso musician, which is perhaps even more remarkable for the fact that she performs on an instrument that isn't typically known for its virtuoso capabilities. As you'll hear in this interview, Carol thrives on hearing folks exclaim, "I never knew the tuba could sound like that!" I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Carol after a reading rehearsal together, and learned that she is not only a musical virtuoso, but between her varied interests in ultimate frisbee, distance running, reading voraciously and writing her own solo and ensemble arrangements for her tuba cover band, "Tubular", she is also a virtuoso in the art of living.

Sara Davis Buechner

Sara Davis Buechner has been hailed by The New York Times for her "intelligence, integrity and all-encompassing technical prowess". As one of the leading keyboard artists of our time, Sara has an active repertoire of over 100 piano concertos and has appeared with prominent orchestras all over the world. Sara was recently appointed to the piano faculty at Temple University's Boyer College of Music and Dance, in Philadelphia.

Sara Davis Buechner first came to prominence as David Buechner, winning the gold medal in the 1984 Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition, and a Bronze Medal in the 1986 Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition in Moscow. Incidentally, as a result of being the only medal winner to perform on a Yamaha piano at the Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition, David was invited to tour Japan, and subsequently became the first American Yamaha artist. In 1998, David came out as Sara Davis Buechner, and underwent gender reassignment surgery in 2002. Now residing in Philadelphia, I had the opportunity to visit Sara for this interview at her new center city apartment.

Sam Rao, Developer of Practicia

Sam Rao is a multi-discipline musician, entrepreneur, and developer of Practicia, an innovative app platform that helps students and teachers make practicing more fun and productive. As a musician, Sam studied composition and conducting at Oberlin Conservatory and the Aspen Festival. As an entrepreneur, he co-founded his own music school which grew to be one of the largest in Northern Ohio.

Everyone knows that practice makes perfect, and no doubt you've heard the old adage, "how do you get to Carnegie Hall? Practice, practice, practice". Ah, but practicing a musical instrument can be the bane of any student and a frustrating topic for teachers and parents alike. I'll confess, I hated practicing the piano as a kid (and I still hate it as a professional). It's just one of those "necessary evils" that you have to suck up and do, just like eating your veggies or sticking to your exercise plan, right? As a music educator himself and the co-founder of one of the largest music schools in Northern Ohio, Sam understands the challenges of practicing well. As the CEO and founder of Practicia, he's introducing a radical new approach to help students and teachers make practicing a musical instrument profoundly more productive and - dare I say - fun? - with some really interesting accountability and gamification tools.

Roger Ideishi, Occupational Therapist and Arts Advocate

Roger Ideishi is the Director of Occupational Therapy at Temple University in Philadelphia. He has worked to provide community access and opportunities for children with diverse sensory and cognitive abilities. Roger has worked with such arts organizations as the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the Pittsburgh Symphony, the Philadelphia Ballet Company and The Philadelphia Orchestra to help them build meaningful learning experiences for special needs children and their families.

In many art performance experiences, such as the theater, the ballet, or a classical concert, there is an implicit expectation that audiences are supposed to remain silent and only express their appreciation through applause at appropriate moments. But for folks with sensory and cognitive challenges, such as Autism, it can be difficult to interpret the complex social cues in an artistic environment, and as a result, they can feel shunned, isolated, and disconnected from these communal experiences. Thanks to Roger Ideishi's work, more and more arts organizations are finding ways to welcome special needs audiences and experience the power of the arts to connect all members of society in meaningful ways.

Eleanor Sokoloff, Legendary Piano Pedagogue

Eleanor Sokoloff has been teaching piano at The Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia since 1936. At the ripe young age of 102, she shows no sign of slowing down. Some of her most esteemed students have included the likes of Keith Jarrett, Lambert Orkis, Susan Starr, Leon McCawley, Meng-Chieh Liu, and countless others.

This year, Eleanor Sokoloff will be turning 103 years old, and remarkably, she is still teaching piano at The Curtis Institute of Music and pouring tea at one of Curtis' most beloved weekly Wednesday tea time traditions. This interview was originally recorded 2 ½ years ago as a 2 part video that was significantly edited down for time purposes, but thanks to the long form medium of podcasts, I thought it would be fitting to provide the full version of this wonderful interview with one of the most important piano teachers of our time. By the way, Mrs. Sokoloff was my piano teacher when I was 8 years old, and thanks to her I was able to enroll at Curtis under her tutelage at the age of 13. Steven Hackman, Composer, Conductor, Arranger, and Producer

Steven Hackman is one of the most exciting hybrid classical and pop artists on the scene today. Steve has worked extensively with the hit classical crossover group, Time for Three, writing several of their unique arrangements, and is currently the Creative Director of FUSE at the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Music Director of the 'Mash-Up' series at the Colorado Music Festival, and founder and creative director of his own music brand :STEREO HIDEOUT:

I first met Steve as a young conducting student at the esteemed Curtis Institute of Music, studying under the legendary maestro Otto Werner-Mueller. But while he was pursuing serious classical music studies, he had a secret passion. One day, I happened to be walking by some of the basement practice rooms, and heard the most amazing pop piano and vocals coming out from one of them. You guessed it - it was Steve, who has an amazing voice, and is an incredible pop songwriter in his own right. As a conductor, Steve went on to work with the Reading Symphony and the Indianapolis Symphony. As a pop songwriter and arranger, he continues to collaborate with Time for Three, has a second album of his own original hip hop music in the works, and even had a run on season 7 of American Idol, placing in the top 64 out of 150,000 contestants. But what really got my attention was the amazing symphonic mashups he's been creating, blending pop and classical mediums in a way that's exciting new audiences everywhere.

Chad Seiter, Movie, TV and Videogame Composer

Chad Seiter has composed and produced original music for several major Hollywood franchises such as Star Trek, Fringe, and Lost. He is also Composer, Music Director and Associate Executive Producer for Pokémon: Symphonic Evolutions and The Legend of Zelda: Symphony of the Goddesses touring concert series performing symphonic arrangements of classic Nintendo scores with hundreds of the world's leading orchestras.

Chad Seiter is one of those composers lucky enough to create music that encompasses his passions for movies, TV and video games. Chad started his career as an assistant to Academy Award-winning composer Michael Giacchino, and has produced music for some top video game titles, such as the 2013 'Star Trek' video game based on J.J. Abrams' reboot film, and 2016's 'ReCore' from Microsoft studios. A die-hard retro gamer himself, Chad's symphonic arrangements of themes from classic NIntendo games has been a huge success, and a great way to attract new audiences who have never been to a live symphony concert before.

Mimi Stillman, Flutist

At the age of 12, Mimi Stillman was the youngest wind player ever to be accepted for studies at The Curtis Institute of Music with the legendary flutist Julius Baker. Now, Mimi is not only a world renowned flute soloist, but she is also the founder and artistic director of the Dolce Suono chamber music ensemble, as well as an author, arranger, teacher, and lecturer with a doctoral degree in history.

Back when I was the Director of Instrumental Accompaniment at The Curtis Institute of Music, I had the good fortune to work with Mimi Stillman, one of the most remarkable young flutists I have ever met. Mimi has gone on to do incredible things as a musical and artistic pioneer, championing new works by living composers, getting her doctoral degree in history from the University of Pennsylvania, and enriching the Philadelphia cultural scene with her remarkable chamber ensemble organization, Dolce Suono.

Alan Morrison is recognized as one of America's premier concert organists, performing in prestigious concert organ venues across the United States and in Canada, as well as in international festivals. Alan is currently the head of the organ department at The Curtis Institute of Music, and is a faculty member of Westminster Choir College and College Organist at Ursinus College.

I had the good fortune of attending The Curtis Institute of Music at the same time as Alan Morrison, who in reality is a triple threat as an organist, collaborative pianist, and harpsichordist. Alan was a close friend of Fred Rogers, and even appeared on a few episodes of "Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood" back in 1994. If you don't know anything about the organ, you're in for a real treat with this interview, as Alan helps us unpack what all those thousands of buttons and switches do and all the components that make the organ the true "king of instruments".

David Steinbuhler

Pianists with small hands have to overcome considerable physical challenges in order to be able to play great literature for the piano. Oftentimes those challenges lead to muscle strain and even career-ending injuries. To address the unique needs of smaller hands, engineer and business owner David Steinbuhler collaborated with pianist Christopher Donison in 1991 to develop a new set of standard sizes and prototypes of smaller piano keyboards.

The magic for creating these smaller keyboards takes place in David Steinbuhler's Titusville, Pennsylvania ribbon factory, a family-run business that has been around since 1897 . Step inside and you'll see thousands and thousands of spools of ribbons and rolls of string made to create those ribbons, along with an endless array of machinery, much of it custom built by David's grandfather and uncle. Because they need to make their own parts and tools, David's factory uses a number of specialized machines called CNC, or Computer Numeric Control machines, which use computers to precisely design and cut out parts from wood.

Kayhan Kalhor, Master of Persian Music and the Kamancheh

Kayhan Kalhor is one of the greatest living masters of the Kamancheh, a 3 or 4 stringed Persian spiked fiddle and ancient predecessor to the modern cello. Kayhan performs around the world extensively as a soloist and collaborator with a wide variety of musicians, including Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road ensemble.

The kamancheh is an incredibly soulful, deeply expressive instrument that can sound like the human voice or a woodwind instrument in the right hands. Talking with Kayhan gave me a wonderful opportunity to explore the world of Persian classical music, a field that is completely new to me, with an outside perspective that I imagine might be similar to someone who doesn't know anything about Western classical music. What should I be listening for? What are the elements helpful to understand so that I can gain a deeper appreciation for the beautiful sounds I hear?

Hector Olivera, Organist

Hector Olivera was a child prodigy on the organ, having performed for the likes of Eva Perón, the first lady of Argentina, when he was only five. Hector has since become an international sensation, performing on all the great cathedral organs around the world, as well as embracing the possibilities of digital organs with his stunning live performances of classical as well as popular and movie transcriptions.

The mighty pipe organ has been hailed as the "king of instruments", with its ability to reproduce the sounds of entire orchestras, and actually has been in existence since the time of the ancient Greeks. Throughout its history, the organ represented the cutting edge of technological and musical capabilities. It's rather curious that in recent times, with the advent of digital organ technologies that simulate the massive pipe structures and add more sound and performance capabilities, there has been quite a bit of resistance from traditional organists to embrace these newer, smaller instruments. Hector Olivera is a remarkable musician who freely embraces both traditional and digital perspectives, and his performances leave you wondering, "how is it possible that one person could play all those instrument sounds all at once?"

Seymour Lipkin Tribute

Seymour Lipkin was an esteemed faculty member of the Juilliard School and The Curtis Institute of Music. His understated persona coupled with a towering intellect resulted in a passionate fidelity to the composer's intent on the score, as can be heard in his complete recordings of the Beethoven and Schubert piano sonatas. A longtime director of the Kneisel Hall summer chamber music festival in Blue Hill, Maine, Mr. Lipkin died near his beloved festival last year at the age of 88.

History is full of stories of great musicians with financial struggles - Beethoven, Schubert, even Mozart was said to have been buried in a pauper's grave. The image of the "starving artist" tries to glorify the idea that great musicians are supposed to sacrifice everything in pursuit of their art and not expect any commercial gain, much less "stain" themselves with mundane business pursuits. But we forget that before these great musicians of the past were immortalized for their music, they too had to face the same career struggles as today's musicians to find work, make money, and get recognized. And then there are the amazing success stories of musicians like soprano Jenny Lind, the 19th century "Sweedish Nightingale", who earned an astonishing $9 million from her tour of North America. Musicologist Mark Samples has been studying the careers of the great musicians of the past, and has some fascinating takeaways for today's musicians to help them break out of the "starving artist" mindset and show how both artistic and financial success don't need to be mutually exclusive.

Gary Lionelli, Composer for "O.J. Simpson: Made In America"

Film and television composer Gary Lionelli created the music for ESPN's critically acclaimed five-part miniseries "O.J.: Made in America," directed by Ezra Edelman. Most television projects for composers involve providing music for 30-60 minutes of show time. Most movie projects call for music for 1.5-2 hours. Anthony McGill is one of the greatest clarinetists in the classical music field today. He's been the Associate Principal Clarinet of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, the Principal Clarinet of the Metropolitan Orchestra, and currently serves as Principal Clarinet of the New York Philharmonic.

Several months ago, Anthony's older brother, Demarre McGill, was featured on the show. What an honor to have the opportunity to talk to Anthony, whom I've known since he was a student at Curtis. In addition to his remarkable achievements in the orchestral world and collaborations with some of the greatest classical musicians, Anthony performed with Itzhak Perlman, Yo-Yo Ma and Gabriela Montero at the inauguration of President Barack Obama back in 2009. On a tangential note, Anthony was actually partially responsible for inspiring me to become a paperless musician, and start a little company called "AirTurn" to create wireless page turning pedals for reading digital sheet music hands free.

"Clair de lune" by late 19th and early 20th century French composer Claude Debussy is one of the world's most beloved pieces written for the piano. In this special episode of "A Musical Life", I've invited award-winning pianist, composer, and Peabody Conservatory graduate Jennifer Nicole Campbell to share her insights into what makes "Clair de lune" such a special musical experience.

On this show, we share stories about making music and the things that move our souls. Norman Lebrecht, A Prolific Musical Mind

Norman Lebrecht is one of the foremost cultural writers and classical music reviewers today. Jason Graves, Video Game Composer

Jason Graves is a BAFTA award-winning composer behind some of the most popular video games such as the Dead Space series, the 2013 reboot of Tomb Raider, and more recently Far Cry Primal, which was just published by Ubisoft earlier this year. Jason combines modern classical composition techniques with innovative sound designs to create scores that are incredibly visceral and immersive.

Video games are a 101 billion dollar industry worldwide. To put this into perspective, the video game industry by some estimates is twice as large as the movie industry. As games become more and more immersive with photorealistic graphics and compelling storylines, high production quality demands a great music score. This is where my guest Jason Graves comes in. A classically- trained composer and world percussionist, Jason has written music for film, TV, and nearly 80 games, and has won BAFTA awards and nominations for his work on the Dead Space and Tomb Raider games. World renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma established Silkroad in 1998 to explore how music can advance global understanding. Since 2000, the musicians of the world music collective, Silk Road Ensemble, have been on a mission to change the world by connecting diverse cultures and traditions in performances, workshops, and residencies.

Yo-Yo Ma and the Grammy-nominated Silk Road Ensemble recently released their sixth album, "Sing Me Home", which was developed and recorded alongside "The Music of Strangers", a new documentary movie from Oscar and Emmy-winning director Morgan Neville that tells the story of the Ensemble and Silkroad, its parent organization. "The Music of Strangers" is slated for theatrical release later this week, and is one of the most breathtaking, beautiful, and moving documentaries I have ever seen. In this episode, we'll meet some of the remarkable musicians featured prominently in the film, and listen to excerpts from "Sing Me Home", an album which explores the musical roots of individual members of the Ensemble.

Composer Peter Schickele has written over 100 works for a wide variety of orchestral, chamber, and vocal ensembles and genres, as well as scores for film and television. As the world's leading - ah, make that, only - authority on P.D.Q. Bach, the oddest of J.S. Bach's 20-odd children, Professor Shickele has for the past 50 years unwittingly lampooned classical music culture with his mis-discoveries of works for such bizarre instruments as the left handed sewer flute, the windbreaker, and the bicycle siren.

Peter Schickele has been one of my musical heroes since childhood, ever since my first general music teacher played one of his P.D.Q. Bach albums in class and had everyone howling with laughter! From his humble beginnings as the only bassoon player in Fargo, North Dakota, to his collaborations with legendary folk singer Joan Baez and score for the seminal sci-fi movie, "Silent Running", as well as his long-running radio show, "Schickele Mix" on Public Radio International, Peter Schickele is perhaps best known for his comedic persona as P.D.Q. Bach, the 21st of J.S. Bach's 20 children, and the only "dead" composer who can still take commissions. What a thrill to have Peter and P.D.Q. on my show!

Time For Three

Time for Three is made up of Violinists Nick Kendall and Nikki Chooi and Double Bassist Ranaan Meyer, and can probably be best described as a “classically trained garage band”. With an exciting mix of originals, covers and classical music with a capital 'T' “Twist”, these guys have electrified audiences around the world and were recently featured on a PBS special performing with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra.

We’re starting a special series of episodes that focus on entrepreneurial musicians who think way outside the box. I’m so excited to have Time for Three on the show to help me kick this off. I recently met up with Nick, Nikki, and Ranaan after one of their jam session rehearsals at The Curtis Institute of Music. Sage Lewis, Film and Virtual Reality Composer

What do you wear to a symphony concert? When do you clap? And why is the timpani player smelling his drums? If you’ve never been to a classical music concert, it can be a bit intimidating the very first time you go to one. There seems to be a whole world of etiquette and protocol that can make the experience seem - well, aloof and elitist, at least in some people’s eyes. Orchestras and arts administrators are keenly aware of how important it is to make classical music more accessible to grow future audiences, and in some cases are trying to think of ways to do away with some of the traditional conventions. But for Violinist Holly Mulcahy, the "Queen of Classical Music Culture", these rituals and rules of etiquette are part of what makes the classical music concert so special, and a deeper understanding of them can serve to enhance one’s experience in a concert hall, making it much more memorable and enjoyable. Holly maintains a busy schedule as concertmaster of the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera and as a soloist and chamber musician. Demarre McGill is one of the leading young American flutists of our time. Winner of the Avery Fisher Career Grant, Demarre has been a sought after soloist and chamber musician. He is also the co-founder of The Art of Élan, an innovative chamber music organization in San Diego that introduces new audiences to classical music in unique venues and programs.

I’ve known Demarre ever since his student days at Curtis, studying under Julius Baker and Jeffrey Khaner. He was amazing from the get go, and it’s been no surprise to see his stratospheric rise to the top of the classical music world. What if you could design the perfect summer music camp? Sandy Marcucci wanted to do just that for her daughter studying the violin with Kim Fisher from the Philadelphia Orchestra, so she started literally in her own backyard. Now, 20 years later, the Philadelphia International Music Festival has become a major destination for hundreds of students around the world, who get to study with members of the Philadelphia Orchestra.

Most summer music camps have a selective audition process which prospective students need to pass in order to attend. This summer, I’ll be one of the piano directors at the Philadelphia International Music Festival, which takes place on the beautiful campus of Bryn Mawr University. One of the things that makes PIMF so unique is that fact that it’s open to music students of all ages and ability levels. Its audition process is used to customize the student’s experience rather than select them. The result is a welcoming experience where everyone is immersed in classical music and given the opportunity to make their own best progress with the help of master teachers from the Philadelphia Orchestra.

Jennifer Higdon, Pulitzer Prize-Winning Composer

Jennifer Higdon is one of the most performed living American composers today. She taught herself to play the flute at the age of 15, wrote her first composition when she was 21, then eventually went on to win the Pulitzer prize for her violin concerto in 2010. She recently completed her first opera, “Cold Mountain”, which was premiered by the Santa Fe Opera in 2015 and is being performed in Philadelphia this week.

Jennifer Higdon and I have known each other since we were classmates at The Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. Over the years it’s been such an honor and a delight to perform so many of her works - in fact, I even helped her record her very first album, Rapid Fire, way back in 1995. Despite all the well-deserved accolades Jennifer has received for her incredible compositions, she remains one of the sweetest, most genuine and down-to-earth persons I know.

In this special interview, Jennifer tells the stories behind some of her most popular compositions, and shares some practical insights into what it takes to be able to make a full-time living as a composer today.

Julien Beaudiment, French Flautist

French flautist Julien Beaudiment has enjoyed a remarkable career, having been appointed principal flute of the Orchestre de l'Opéra National de Lyon when he was still a student at age 22, as well as being the only French flautist to have held a principal position at a major British Orchestra, the BBC National Orchestra of Wales.

This past November, I had the wonderful privilege of performing together with Julien Beaudiment at the Riverside Cathedrale in New York, presented by SKP Consulting and Management. Right after rehearsing for the concert, I had a chance to sit down with Julien for an intimate conversation. In 2013, Julien became the principal flute of the LA Philharmonic, but then left abruptly in 2015, citing personal reasons. In this special interview, Julien shares the reasons why he left LA and returned to his principal position at the Orchestre de l'Opéra National de Lyon.

Jeffrey Biegel, Pianist Extraordinaire

Jeffrey Biegel is a pianist who truly thinks outside the box. Not only is he an incredible musician with astounding technique, but he also has an innovative approach to his career and is one of the most prolific recording artists and champions of new music from contemporary composers and even pop stars like Keith Emerson, Neil Sedaka, Billy Joel, and Peter Tork from the Monkees.

Ever since winning first prize in the 1985 William Kappell competition, pianist Jeffrey Biegel has been an unstoppable musical phenomenon. “Prolific” doesn’t even begin to describe his artistic output - Jeffrey plays everything, from traditional classical repertoire to brand new works from new and established composers. Jeffrey has pioneered the idea of creating consortiums of orchestras to help create and perform these new compositions.

But for the musicians and music lovers of the Orchestra Society of Philadelphia, music is a way of life, and you'll find them gathered together every Friday night reading through symphony orchestra works just for fun.

On a cold Friday night in winter, associate producer Allison Pokras and I visited Presser Hall on the campus of Temple University to sit in on one of the weekly reading sessions of the Orchestra Society of Philadelphia, one of the oldest community orchestras of its kind in the USA. The Orchestra Society of Philadelphia was founded in 1964 by Morris Goldman and Sidney Rothstein as a place where professional musicians, teachers, students and a wide variety of folks with varying "day jobs" could get together to read through various symphonic orchestral music under the baton of a rotating roster of conductors.

He’s worked on scores for TV shows such as American Idol and The Voice, as well as film scores for Les Miserables, The Chronicles of Narnia, and Ron Howard’s upcoming film, In The Heart Of The Sea. He’s also the developer of StaffPad, a fascinating app for Windows tablet computers that lets composers create handwritten scores that get transformed into digital music. David Kim's Orchestral Institute at Cairn University

Violinist David Kim was one of the prizewinners of the 1986 International Tchaikovsky Competition, one of the most prestigious events in the international music community held once every four years. Even with this extraordinary achievement, he had a difficult time getting a job in an orchestra. Now, as Concertmaster of the Philadelphia Orchestra, David has partnered with Cairn University to create a unique institute to help aspiring violinists master what it takes to not only win an orchestra position, but also to survive and thrive musically, emotionally, and spiritually.

If you haven’t had a chance, I’d like to invite you to listen to my interview with David Kim in episode 2. What makes getting a job in an orchestra unique is that a musician’s resume doesn’t really matter much - it all depends on how a musician plays in an audition, behind a screen for a panel of musicians from the orchestra. The screen is designed to ensure anonymity, but playing for an impersonal audience you can’t see or hear and having your career depend on a performance lasting anywhere from 2 to 5 minutes can be one of the most frustrating and terrifying experiences for any musician. Despite David Kim’s incredible talent, he soon found that playing auditions required a completely different skill set when he lost the first 5 orchestra auditions he attempted. Now, as Concertmaster of the Philadelphia Orchestra, David has collaborated with Cairn University to create a special program to give musicians the critical professional as well as life skills they will need but - surprisingly - are not taught in most music schools.

Gregory Alan Isakov, Indie Folk Singer & Songwriter

Gregory Alan Isakov is a fascinating, conscientious singer/songwriter based in Boulder, Colorado. Some of his best known songs are “The Stable Song”, “Raising Cain”, and “Big Black Car”, which was featured in a 2012 McDonald’s holiday commercial. Greg balances a busy touring and recording schedule with life on his 4-acre farm, where he raises animals, bees, and a variety of crops, thanks to his degree in horticulture. His songs explore facets of everyday life with thought-provoking lyrics and vivid word imagery, thanks to his love of prose and writing.

I have to give special thanks to our associate producer, Allison Pokras, for introducing me to Gregory Alan Isakov’s music. Allison grew up together with Greg, after he immigrated from South Africa to Philadelphia at the age of 7. Greg has spent his entire life traveling, and much of those experiences are expressed in his music. Isobel Ann Martin, Traditional Gaelic Singer

Isobel Ann Martin, or "Bellann" to her friends, is a traditional Gaelic singer living on the Isle of Lewis off of the coast of Scotland. At the age of 18 she won the Traditional Gold Medal at The Royal National Mod. Despite her tremendous early success, Bellann has kept a low profile, with only a few CDs and television appearances, focusing instead on her career as a nurse and motherhood.

I’m delighted to introduce you to Isobel Ann Martin, or “Bellann” to her friends. Bellann is the daughter of Calum Martin, who was featured in my last episode, and is also a remarkable traditional Gaelic singer - the first time I heard her sing was when she submitted vocal tracks for one of my songs in my upcoming album, Psalms: Hyssop & Snow, and I was blown away by the purity of her voice and the amazing vocal embellishments that are one of the hallmarks of Gaelic singing.

Calum Martin, Gaelic Singer & Songwriter

Gaelic singer, songwriter, and educator Calum Martin has been performing and recording since 1979. Based on the Isle of Lewis off the coast of Scotland, Calum has a special interest in Gaelic Psalm Singing, a unique a capella improvisatory singing style still practiced by congregations during their Sunday worship services, as well as pockets of African-American and Cree Indian congregations in the US. In fact, Calum explains, jazz, country and bluegrass styles can trace their musical origins in the Gaelic Psalms sung in the western isles of Scotland.

Jordan Rudess, Keyboard Wizard

Jordan Rudess is a member of the progressive rock band, “Dream Theater” and was voted the best keyboardist of all time in a poll by MusicRadar. Jordan began his career as a classically trained pianist from Juilliard, and in some ways took 20 years to become an overnight success.

I first got to know Jordan when we were both featured in Pianist magazine back in 2008. After I co-founded AirTurn, I reached out to Jordan to help promote our wireless page turning pedal for the iPad, and he graciously invited me to his home to film a terrific promo. Thanks to our mutual love for music and technology, we’ve crossed paths several times at various music trade shows and have managed to stay in touch throughout the years.

Aaron Rosand, The Last Romantic Violinist - Part 1

Described by the New York Times critic Harold Schonberg as “one of the great living exponents of Romantic violin music”, Aaron Rosand has captivated audiences and critics the world over. His recordings have been hailed by Gramophone Magazine as “some of the greatest recordings of this century”. For over 50 years, Mr. Rosand performed on the ‘Kochanski’ 1741 Guarneri violin. In 2009, he sold it for $10 million, and subsequently donated $1.5 million of the proceeds to The Curtis Institute of Music, where he studied as a student of Efrem Zimbalist, and where he currently teaches a new generation of master violinists.

When I was 19 years old and still a student at The Curtis Institute of Music, Aaron Rosand invited me to perform with him as his pianist for a concert tour of Japan and Korea. That began a 20 year collaboration filled with memorable performances and recordings, and a friendship that continues to this day. Despite this, there were many questions I still had for Aaron, so our conversation went on for some time and I hope you’ll enjoy and learn a thing or two - I know I did. American pianist Gary Graffman has been a major figure in the classical music world since winning the Leventritt award in 1949. For 30 years, Mr. Graffman performed, toured and recorded with the world’s most prestigious orchestras. Despite an injury to his right hand in 1979, Mr. Graffman transformed his career to become the president of The Curtis Institute of Music, champion of music for left hand piano literature, and celebrated teacher of a brilliant new generation of pianists such as Lang Lang, Yuja Wang, and Haochen Zhang.

001 - A Lonely Song

What’s your go-to song when you feel lonely? Does hearing or playing that song reinforce sad feelings, or does it actually inspire something beautiful out of isolation? This episode is about one particular song that I think epitomizes so many different aspects of being alone.

The Adagio assai from Maurice Ravel's Piano Concerto in G major is one of the most beautifully poignant pieces of music ever written. I wanted to adapt it for solo piano so that I could have it with me whenever I felt the need to express a lonely sentiment or explore the beauty of isolation. Here is a video performance of my arrangement:
