As the Pandemic continues across the globe and COVID-19 cases are still on the rise, there is high demand for ventilators, personal protective equipment, and other various medical equipment needed to keep our global population healthy. Before the pandemic, Capstan California has played an important role in providing medical components and powder metal filters. These filters are used in many medical applications including, but not limited to, ventilators, oxygen blenders, medical gas delivery systems, and syringe filters.

As the number of COVID-19 cases started to rapidly grow within the United States, existing ventilator manufacturers were struggling to keep up demand for these vital machines.

Even with all ventilator producers working above their full capacity, there is still a need for even more ventilators. General Motors, Tesla, and Ford all took it upon themselves to assist in the fight against the pandemic by retrofitting their existing manufacturing equipment to produce ventilators instead of automobiles.

Due to Capstan’s prior experience providing porous metal filters used in ventilators, Ford selected Capstan as one of their vendors to assist in producing 50,000 ventilators in 100 days. Capstan and other essential manufacturing businesses have worked together since early April to meet this demand and beyond. The ventilator production is well underway, with Ford expected to deliver finished product in just a few weeks.

Capstan business activities includes the design and manufacturing of critical components in the medical, automotive, agriculture, construction, aerospace, securities, and military markets. These critical markets are part of the global infrastructure. USA state-wide measures allow companies to continue operations when you fall under these categories.

Capstan has been identified by many of our customers as a critical supplier. Our customers have written personal letters to our organization to make sure we are able to stay open through the pandemic. In response, Capstan made the decision to stay open. Our employees have been asked to continue working their normal schedules, but we have seen a reduced work staff at all locations.

What is Capstan doing to protect employees from COVID-19?

If you are experiencing COVID-19 like symptoms then please stay home and contact Human Resources.

Capstan has implemented social distancing, protective mask and gloves, and sanitary wipes available to all employees. Employees at risk are being asked to stay home. In order to maintain operations, Capstan must first protect the work staff to prevent COVID-19 from spreading within the organization. Capstan is strictly rejecting all visits to all facilities, including Customer visits, Capstan cross facility visits, and non-employee visits. Mail and in-coming shipments are allowed, but social distancing is in place.

What is Capstan going to do if things get worse?

Capstan was prepared to shut down all facilities during the first hours of receiving news from California Governor Gavin Newsom. Capstan will follow the federal, state, and local executive orders, emergency declarations, and other guidelines. The COVID-19 situation is fluid so we ask all employees and customers to prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

AGMA 7 Stainless Steel 316 Gear – Gen 3 – Cost savings met through weight, material, and processing advancements.

Designed in the USA, this stainless-steel precision gear required unique tooling for compaction. Light weighting the part meant the use of four individual kidney cores. We created nine different compacting tools to make this part. The tight tolerance on the inner diameter was brought into specification after sintering. We delivered a product that outperformed any gear tested.

All gear dimensions adhered to AGMA Level 7 qualities and used difficult powder: stainless-steel 316.

Custom Made Housing

“The C4L combines the compact wrist design of the C4 along with a slimline body design to keep overall weight down while maximizing motion flexibility.”

We built two press cells with dual C4L robots mounted centered for dual cavity compaction robotic removal. The dual robot dual cavity combo increased manufacturing capacity. Human operators have a difficult time removing two parts from a machine at one time. The increase in production will allow Capstan to enter new markets and bring on higher volume applications.

Vast-Ex, automation experts, built custom cells for housing the robots. Vast-Ex is a team of integrator’s that will take on any robotic assembly program and build the design from the ground up. Custom robot grippers, HMI programming, tray sensors, and check lasers make this system fully operator error proof.

Our customers require a hands off-approach to manufacturing which reduces the amount of human error. We know that not all programs require robots and that the upfront investment to introduce this technology might not work for certain applications. We’re thankful to be working with companies that are excited to be growing with us.

Capstan Future

Ten years ago, Capstan Incorporated did not own a single 6-axis robot company wide. Small pneumatic grippers have been utilized for many years but investments in robotic technology were too significant to justify. We are excited to be introducing the first set of new Epson robots and hope the implementation will lead to future endeavors.

NASA and JPL project teams came to Capstan for a porous metal solution to be used on the Mars Curiosity Rover. The main objective was to keep debris from entering and to repressurize or vent the drill during the landing of the rover. Our team provided a stainless steel solution of twelve porous metal disk surrounding the cover plate to the MSL Drill.

“NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory required a means of venting and repressurizing internal volumes of the Mars Curiosity Rover’s drill during the launch, cruise, entry, descent, and landing phases of rover’s mission. Capstan’s HEPA filters allowed the drill to equalize its internal pressure with that of its environment, without being subject to contamination by Martian dust.  Improper venting could cause damage to the drill structure or the lubrication of its mechanisms, while intrusion of particulates could interfere with small moving parts.  The rover traveled 570 million kilometers to reach Mars and has since been successful in acquiring powdered rock samples using its drill.” – Timothy Szwarc, NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory
