Exciting and exhausting, all at once. Three’s a lot of STEEP competition in the comedy category this year, the red carpet will be a sweltering bath of B.O. (95 with no cloud cover) and I still don’t know what Aubrey is wearing on her feet, but a big part of our ability to enjoy the very long Emmy day comes down to what I put in my purse and how I prep the night before. Every year I have the biggest, ugliest purse on the red carpet, but it’s all good. I’m not about suffering for beauty. In case you couldn’t tell.

I started to make a packing list and thought you might like to see it in case you ever need to take a 4-8 year old to the Emmys some day. This purse list would also work for accompanying a grown man:

Pack:
– gum/mints
– snacks (granola bars, candy, nuts, crackers)
– tissues
– 2 battery chargers & 1 cord
– iPad Mini
– iPhone
– wet wipes
– band aids
– Tums
– Advil Jr
– Aleve
– TICKETS/LIMO PASSES (this one is important)
– cash to tip driver
– ID/CC
– extra pair of socks for Aubrey (dry feet are happy feet)
– sweaters (freezing in the theater)

To-Do Tonight:
– booster seat by front door
– charge both battery packs
– put Aubrey’s booster seat by front door
– write check to dog sitter and leave on kitchen counter
– have Aubrey try on different socks & shoes
– lay out and check all clothing, jewelry and accessories
– set coffee auto-brew timer
– drink some wine, take a deep breath and let it happen 🙂

I’m off to empty the dishwasher, throw in another load of laundry and put the clean sheets on the bed before I get started on the above list! LOL!

Fingers crossed for Modern Family tomorrow and thanks for all of your love and support xo

I was bringing the food home to eat, so I didn’t need them. This drives me nuts and I’d like to do something about it, rather than just complain. My personality is to take action when I don’t like something and this is an issue I’ve been thinking about for a couple years now. So it’s time to put my money where my mouth is.

You all know that there’s a GIANT pool of plastic floating in the Pacific Ocean, approximately the size of Texas. Right? If not, thanks for coming out from under your rock and please keep reading. You need to read this the most.

I want to start petitions to restaurant chains to stop giving plastic items to customers (straws and to-go utensils) unless they are requested. When I used to wait on tables, I would see people take the straw out of their drink and lay it on the table, unused. A complete waste and more plastic that will sit forever in a land fill or end up in the ocean, killing our ecosystem. I eat a lot of take out food and always have to ask restaurant workers to please not put plastic utensils in the bag and half the time, they do anyway, out of habit. Think of how many plastic straws and utensils get thrown away without even being used. It’s so frustrating to me. I feel this is just a bad habit we can change and once we get past the weird hump, it will be a no-brainer. Like using re-usable shopping bags.

And believe me, I travel a lot for work, I have a young child and two pets… I get it. We all use plastic sometimes. I just admitted, I eat a lot of take-out food which is not always packaged in an eco-friendly way. No one is eco-perfect, including myself (I made that up, btw) but a small effort from many, could make such a big difference.

If one major restaurant corporation in the US instated this as policy, just think how much of an impact it could have on the Great Pacific Garbage Patch! Then imagine if others followed suit!

For instance, Darden Restaurant Group owns Olive Garden, Yard House, The Capital Grill, LongHorn Steak House and three other smaller chains. Can you imagine what a difference it would make if all of those restaurants stopped offering plastic drinking straws unless they were requested?! The restaurants would save a little money on straws too, so… why not? And then there’s the paper that the straws are wrapped in. We can reduce this waste!!

And ask yourself, next time you eat at a restaurant: Do you really need a straw? Probably not. You probably don’t use straws at home, why do you need one at a restaurant? The glasses are clean! I’ve heard people say they don’t like to put their mouth on a glass from a restaurant, as if it’s possibly dirty. Uh, but you’re ok eating off of utensils that have been used and washed? It doesn’t make sense. Change is good. Take this opportunity to make a difference.

SO, my question to you all – does anyone out there have experience with this kind of thing? I’d rather not waste my time forming petitions that aren’t effective or barking up the wrong trees. Let me know!

If you’re wondering why I feel so strongly about this, watch this video. I chose this video, randomly. It is one of many examples that are so heartbreaking to me. Before you throw away another unused plastic utensil or straw, before you purchase another palette of water in plastic bottles, think about your actions:

I don’t need to expound upon it too much.

The Los Angeles based comedian, Damienne Merlina was personally attacked, bullied and insulted – called out by first and last name – during the Comedy Central special of comedian, Ari Shaffir. I won’t go into detail of what happened as you can watch Damienne’s brief video to see the clip and her personal response:

I know both of these comedians. I’m not close friends with either one, but I will say of Damienne, that she is a kind and friendly woman of integrity. People like her. I’ve never heard of a reason to talk shit about her, so… hmmmm. WTF?

Stand up comedy (and the world, at large) has always been an old boys’ club and even with so women rising to the top ranks of the comedy elite right now, there seems to be a current trend in comedy that I like to call “douche bag humor”. It is popular with the 30 and under crowd and is it misogynistic and mean-spirited. It lacks satire or artistic vision. Seems to me, around the early 2000s, since the Jackass movies came out, it has gotten worse and worse. Our youth culture idolizes it and the entertainment industry perpetuates it and whores it out for money.

Which brings me to the age old question, “Is any topic off-limits in comedy?” This question gets thrown around so often and people who argue both for and against it are often neglecting an important element of this debate. Not just the what, but the how.

I say no. No topic is off-limits when it comes to comedy.  You can talk about a person missing a limb, you can talk about a person who is mentally challenged, you can talk about a person who is any kind of minority – but the laugh had better not come at their expense. Never the butt. That’s one of the most basic and obvious rules of comedy. The exception to this is if you’re an “insult comedian” and then you’d better damn well understand your craft. It is a specific art form that is done well by a brilliant handful of people on the planet. If you’re not one of those people and you’re insulting people on stage under the guise of a JOKE, you’re not a comedian. You’re just a talentless, classless asshole.

I went to an open call for George Takei’s musical which is opening on Broadway in November. The play, “Allegiance” is based upon his family’s true story of being forced from their homes into the Japanese American internment camps during the war.

Today there was an open call, here in Los Angeles, for Asian American singers. This might not seem like a big deal, but for AA musical theater folks, it’s huge. We’re not seen in musicals very often so to have an entire cast of AA actors, singers and dancers is super cool.

I made an appointment with my voice teacher and prepared 16 bars from two contrasting songs, one a classic songbook number and the other a contemporary musical theater piece. I practiced and freaked out a little because I – like 99.9% of all breathing beings in SoCal – am having severe allergy issues right now with a sore throat, post-nasal drip, nagging cough and itchy eyes. This does not make for a great singing voice, but the show must go on.

Before I go any further, I should note that it has been years since I’ve attended any type of open call. Literally, probably over 10 years. Open calls are generally for desperate young actors with no experience, homeless people and American Idol contestants. But apparently this was the only way to be seen here in L.A. and it’s the show of a lifetime for a face like mine.

The open call started at 11am (the notice said not to show up any earlier than 10:30am for sign up) and went until 2pm which is when the dancers open call started. I got there around 11:25am and the waiting room was packed and sweltering. Eyeballing the crowd and knowing they were all going to sing 16-32 bars, I made a rough estimate of a two hour wait.

IMG_5184

Well, almost two hours later, I was losing my voice from allergy coughing, I was starving, the room was even more sweltering and just as crowded. Looking around I knew there was no way we were all going to be seen and they have to give preference to AEA members, which I am not. Then they announced that normally they would just cut the waiting list off at some point and tell those of us who didn’t make it under 2pm to go home and too bad, so sad, sorry but not sorry. That’s not actually what they said, but that’s what typically would happen. But since they really wanted to see as many of us as they could they asked us to select EIGHT BARS to sing from of one of our songs, when we go in the room, don’t waste time introducing ourselves, just give your music to the accompanist and start singing and get out.

A roomful of black haired singers with furrowed brows, frantically started pawing through their sheet music, singing quietly to themselves, shaking their heads, asking each other questions. For those of you who aren’t musicians, let me break it down for you: eight bars of a song is like singing for 10-15 seconds. Uh, yeah. At this point, the dancers started showing up for their sign up and it was pretty obvious who was a singer and who was a dancer. Every actor in the room who thought they had a hot body suddenly realized, they really aren’t a dancer.

About 15 minutes after that announcement, I was put on deck. I did exactly as I was told; when the door opened, I went straight to the accompanist, gave her some quick instructions on where to start, took my place, starting singing, stopped singing, left the room. It was the most anti-climactic musical moment of my life.

I was 90% happy with my singing except my voice cracked a little on a high, sustained note.* Waiting in that loud, hot room with a dry cough really did me in a little. That was a note that typically would have been no problem for me, but I almost lost my voice to these allergies two nights ago. The rest was great, I ended strong, I think I conveyed some of the story of the song in EIGHT BARS and showed some character. Uh, I guess.

And then I left. Total, I spent two and a half hours waiting for my chance to sing those eight bars and I’m still not sure how I feel about it. I mean, I know how I feel about my performance and I’m at peace with that, but I’m not sure if I’m completely glad that I went. I think I am. I guess if I hadn’t gone, I’d be wondering “what if” and that sucks.

I’m grateful that the session runners and the four folks in the audition room were all very nice and friendly. I’m glad that Aubrey’s dad was able to spend the day with her so I could go alone (I usually drag her to auditions with me) and that I forced her to finish her school work yesterday so we wouldn’t have to do any today. And I met a nice young actor/singer named Jane who was actually a fan of my comedy. I was so flattered that she knew who I was and even knew my material. I also bumped into my friend’s nephew, Scott Takeda, and he’s currently in a movie about BDSM! Everyone in the room was kind. I think Asian American actors are kind to one another in this city. We have to be. We still really need each other.

IMG_5185

So it definitely wasn’t a day wasted, but it was time consumed, for sure. I can’t wait to find out who will work in the show. I hope I know some folks who get in. I’m quite certain I won’t be one of them, and that’s ok. It’s all about the journey, right (CLICHÉ!)? But yeah I’m glad I went.

*I was so hungry when I finally got to leave, so I drowned out the worry over that voice crack with a box of Kyochon Chicken Wings. You should try that next time something shitty happens. It really works.

I could dress her up like a little doll and she was adorable. By age 4 she started picking her own costume, but still picked really cute things.

This year, she wanted to be “Sally Bowles” from Cabaret and I had to put the kibosh on that. We settled on Zombie Wonder Woman and now she’s regretting her choice because she’s jealous of every other child in the Western World who will be dressed like something from Minecraft. Ugh. Why can’t she appreciate how baller Zombie Wonder Woman is?!

Here is a retrospective of Aubrey’s costumes before she wanted to be a drug addicted stripper for Halloween. Awwwwww.

Also, the peapod costume was a bonus costume in 2007. My mom bought it for her but I had already gotten the hot dog so she got to be two different food groups that year.

I wish I could stay up later to see it when it’s more visible, but alas, I have to be at the dentist tomorrow morning at 8am for crown #2 prep. Don’t be jealous.

Anyway, I saw at least four or five meteors and staring up at the sky, in solitude, was both beautiful and humbling. I don’t know about you, but sometimes witnessing something massive makes me ache a wee bit. I felt the same way when I visited Sequoia National Park and saw the tremendous redwoods. Small and alone.

Strangely, I’m very comfortable with feeling alone in the universe. Maybe because I come from abandonment and spend a large part of my childhood feeling alone, betrayed and misunderstood.

There is so much talk about depression swirling around social media and the internet following Robin Williams’ passing. I suffered from a bout of depression in my youth (pretty much a blur now) and once again, after the birth of my beloved Aubrey. While I never felt I would take my own life, I am familiar with the dark cloud of hopelessness that is depression and I hope to never sit beneath it again. I am fortunate that my experience with depression has been episodic rather than chronic. I can not imagine what it is like to wrestle with that beast regularly.

So just tonight, while sitting beneath a sprinkle of flashing meteors, I remembered that a quote from one of Robin Williams’ movies was what helped me make sense of some of the harder times in my life and I recall it almost every time I have a personal struggle.

Robin Williams’ Russian defector character “Vladimir Ivanoff” from the 1984 movie “Moscow On The Hudson”:

“When I was in Russia, I did not love my life, but I loved my misery. You know why? Because it was MY misery. I could hold it. I could caress it. It was my misery.”

That one scene from that one movie helped me learn to embrace the struggles in life as a part of the journey. To love even the worst moments because they belong to no one else. I have experienced the greatest joy making a life that is mine and mine alone.

So maybe I’m a freak or just an extreme introvert, but the sensation of being alone – that ache, that pang – is one that gives me clarity and makes me feel alive like nothing else.  For this, I am so grateful.

If you can, do yourself a favor and go outside right now. Look up and feel small.

I know you were all on pins and needles wondering, “I wonder if Amy is still freaking out about her life?” Well, I’m still a little freaked out, but feeling fine about that. I think this is one of the traits that artistic folks share is that we’re ok with the unknown. We even embrace it at times. We are, however, allowed to have a miniature nervous breakdown every once in a while.

So now that that’s over, we’re getting back to life as normal. I’m writing from good ol’ Stage 5 on the Fox lot in L.A. Aubrey is shooting her first scene of season six and it feels like we never left. Seriously, this felt like the shortest hiatus yet, but I think that just means we were having a really great summer. It flew by like…  like something that flies by really fast. I got nothing.

After Aubrey’s done working tonight, I shall embark on my own much needed adventure: a last minute trip to NYC to have fun. That’s it. Just to have fun. Stay with some girlfriends, visit college friends, take in some Broadway shows, eat some great food and then back home. Once again, the main purpose of this trip is to have fun. It’s time for me to reset my sanity meter and enjoy some of life’s great pleasures without Aubrey. Not that she isn’t fun. Don’t get me wrong, but last time I was in NYC with Aubrey, she wanted to eat at The Olive Garden in Times Square. And we did. Let me repeat that: We ate at The Olive Garden In Times Square. I also spent $100 EACH for us to have “Tea With Eloise At The Plaza” and it sucked. Like totally SUCKED. The Plaza should be ashamed. Anyway, I’m going to NYC like a grown up this time and I can’t wait.

I shall perform the following activities during this NYC trip for me and for me only:

– cutting up food
– butt wiping
– hair shampooing and rinsing
– shoelace tying
– teeth brushing
– blowing on food that is too hot
– carrying shit
– reading anything

It’s gonna be great!!

Hey, I’m an ARTIST!

About once a year – usually near the end of the summer because it’s often the end of a long, slow work period – I freak the fuck out and wonder what I’m doing with my life. I question every career choice I’ve ever made, I wallow in self-pity, I wonder why my phone’s not ringing, I can’t focus on a single thing and and the voice in my head plays something like this:

I wonder if I should try to do more stand-up I wonder if I should just quit doing stand up I wonder if I should write a book maybe I should become vegan it was probably a mistake to cancel my gym membership just to save money I haven’t had an audition in a million years maybe I should go back to school and become a doctor I hate school school sucked I really should practice the piano since I have a piano now I should really practice the guitar I wish I had a new guitar I’d really like to do a play there are no good parts for Asians in plays I should write a play what should I write a play about are marshmallows vegan I wonder if I should try to date again men are such a useless waste of time unless I need something heavy lifted I’m so glad I found a reliable guy to lift heavy shit for me for $60 omg I hate it when I see someone I know on Tinder gross so glad I deleted all of my online dating profiles I wonder if I should get pet health insurance I should probably Google that I should figure out when Aubrey and I are going to go to Minnesota next I should write my memoir how did Alan Cumming find time to write two books wtf I wonder how long he’s doing Cabaret would I be a bad mom if I took Aubrey to see that I really want to see it I really should write that script about my dad’s hijacking I should just find someone to write that script about my dad’s hijacking I wish I could dance I’m such a shitty dancer what should I eat for dinner I should try to just eat vegetables and fruit all day tomorrow why are hot dogs so delicious I just don’t know if I could give up cheese forever cheese and butter god I love butter I want to go to the movie theater where the seats recline when’s my next stand up show

…and on and on. And while we’re on the topic of ADD, the yard of one of my neighbors is up on a hill and I can see it from the window where I sit at my desk. Every once in a while their dog runs around in a big, empty, dry dirt area and I think it’s a goat, but it’s not. It’s just a dog. Looks like a Border Collie mix. Like there’s a wild goat running around the SF Valley. So add this to the stream of bullshit: IS THAT A GOAT UP THERE?

I guess what I’m trying to say is that I’m a tad dissatisfied with my career right now and it’s causing me some anxiety. No one is starving to death… yet… but things are not going the way I want right now and I think I need to get a little wacky before I have my next great idea. Or I may just have my mid-life crisis and become a complete embarrassment to my child. I think that’s what normal people do, right? People who work normal jobs.

I have found it to be near impossible to do anything artistically productive when I’m in this state of mind. All I seem to be able to focus on is the daily minutiae of life. Grocery shop. Walk the dogs. Empty the dishwasher. Load the dishwasher. Call the dentist office. Sort the laundry. And we’ve all had slumps but no matter how many well-meaning friends say, “You should ____ (go for a walk, take a class, do some yoga, hire a life coach, get laid, have some wine, take a nap, make a spreadsheet, read The Secret, take the Landmark Forum, try CrossFit, write something),” it doesn’t matter. You can’t just shake a funk. Funk has to make its own exit when the time is right. And you can’t force creativity and that’s the only way I’ve made my living for over 17 years. I suck at everything else, so I’ll just be here. Riding out the funk wave.

And in the meantime, maybe I’ll do a pilates DVD. My abs feel so flabby.

In preparation for a move at the end of this month – only a few miles away so no need to freak out – I have been gradually going through piles, closets and drawers of things. A giant purge is taking place and even though it is slow and painstaking, I know how good it will feel to shed some dead weight.

I just completed the mostly horrible task of cleaning out a 4-drawer file cabinet. Self-employment in the entertainment industry (contract after contract = PAPER!!!!) and life in general, really stacked up on me over the years. But I did come across some gems like the original artwork for my old pet care business logo. It’s still so cute! And hand-written journals from 2003-2004. Almost every entry talked about how broke I was and how much I was struggling:

“I told my friend Jennie I didn’t think I could afford to pay my rent this month and that I might have to ask my parents for help and she just GAVE me $200. I don’t know what I did to deserve such great friends but I swear I’m going to be the most generous friend when I have money.”

Things have changed a lot since that journal entry. Two major and dysfunctional relationships started and ended, I had a child and somewhere after that 2nd shitty relationship, I found an independence and peace in my life that was worth the struggle. And even through the hardest of times with no money, becoming a single-mother who often couldn’t afford gasoline or groceries, I still loved this city and knew I was where I was meant to be.

I don’t know if I’ve been such a generous friend, but I try and reading some of those old entries reminded me to appreciate how far I’ve come since my dog walking days. I have been in L.A. for almost 13 years now and I love it more than ever. She is the city that told me to keep going when I didn’t know how, she gave me a career, a home and the best friends possible and I can’t think of a more magical backdrop for the life of my daughter.

Here’s to the next chapter in our lives! I can’t wait for the next adventure and if anyone wants a dented, upright, 4-drawer, metal file cabinet – it’s yours if you can take it out of here.

The #YesAllWomen hashtag that popped up after the Elliot Rodger murders and suicide in Isla Vista/Santa Barbara has taken on a life of its own and I would imagine the woman who scrolls through this Twitter hashtag feed and doesn’t read several things that resonate with her, is rare indeed. Perhaps non-existent. This feed is compelling. thought provoking, upsetting, disturbing and truthful.

We live in a world where women and girls live in fear of men. Unfortunately, this is fact. For all of the maniacs (especially women) who are going to freak out at this statement and say “I don’t live in fear of men!!” Calm down. Don’t get your undies in a bundle. I don’t mean every second of every day or every man in the world. I know not every man is a murderer or rapist and not every man is violent or abusive. But there are several different levels of fear and our society and culture feeds this malignancy.

Why did it take such a tragic event for people to start talking? Is social media helping or harming? I generally hate the political side of social media and stay away from it, but I’m glad to see these thoughts being put out there. Wherever “there” is. What is happening online is not a real dialogue. Few things online are real.  But hopefully this feed sparks some real dialogues. Helps people put down their smartphones a little bit and discuss a real issue.

I am 41 yrs old and I have experienced NUMEROUS assaults, threats and abuses from men and boys throughout my life. From early childhood until fairly recently. Physical, sexual, verbal. Some were men I knew, some were strangers. Unfortunately, I’m not special. I’m not a survivor or a victim. I’m a regular person. We need to stop being so clandestine about how common this is and, perhaps, #YesAllWomen is a small step forward.

We hold fast to the stereotype of the woman who is a victim of abuse. She’s weak, she’s unintelligent, she’s desperate for attention, she has low self-esteem, she dresses inappropriately, she’s a flirt, she’s a bitch. I don’t think anyone who knows me would describe me in any of these ways and the bottom line is that these stereotypes are irrelevant.

When I was pregnant with Aubrey and when she was an androgynous looking infant people constantly asked me, “Boy or girl?” When I told them “girl”, here are the standard responses I got:

– Good luck, girls are hard
– They’re cute when they’re little, but they are horrible as teenagers
– I have both and boys are so much easier
– I’d take a boy over a girl any day
– Girls are so emotional. Wait until the tween years.
– I’m so glad I have/had boys
– Girls are so cute, but boys are easier to raise

…and on and on and on. I still hear these types of remarks today and she’s almost 7 yrs old.

Why is it that we treat girls’ natural emotional and expressive personalities as “difficult” “bitchy” “scary” but assume boys’ sullen, withdrawn, quiet personalities as “easy to raise” when a hell-fire storm of unfathomable proportions could be brewing just below the surface? Maybe we think boys are so easy to raise because we aren’t actually raising them.

What Elliot Rodger did was horrifying. It was extreme and it wasn’t typical. But his attitude towards women falls within a very common misogynistic norm in our society that is mostly ignored and, at times, even celebrated.

Please read the #YesAllWomen hashtag feed on Twitter and if you don’t have a Twitter account or you’re like my parents and have no idea what Twitter is, here is a link that will give you a sampling:

My kid.

I’m feeling V-E-R-Y conflicted about one of those ridiculously “big” parenting issues. Well, it seems to only be big and controversial here in the US, but I’m talking about co-sleeping. In laymen’s terms, that would be “letting your kid sleep in bed with you.”

There are various reasons people choose to co-sleep or not and the biggest controversies surround infant co-sleeping when there is a supposed danger of rolling over on your tiny little person and smothering it. I’m waaaay past those years and I’m not having anymore kids, so I don’t give a crap about that. I’m talking about Aubrey. My 6, almost 7 year old who has been a champion sleeper all of her life. She still is, for the most part and 99% of her life she has slept independently, in her own room and bed and slept VERY well.

IMG_8180

Lately, she has been asking to sleep in bed with me and getting emotional about it. This happens maybe once or twice a week. Generally, I do not cave. I re-state my reasons why and after a hug and kiss and a reminder that I’m right across the hall if she needs me, I close the door on a teary eyed little girl and she is asleep within a minute or too.

Recently, during one of these episodes, I asked her why she wanted to sleep with me so badly, she stated that she didn’t want to be alone. And I said to her, “But you’re not alone! You have Nelly (that’s her security item – an elephant). You have all of your stuffed animal buddies…” And she retorted, wailing, “But I just want to sleep with someone who’s ALIVE!!!!!!!! Ahhhhhhh!!!” Don’t we all, honey? Don’t we all?

She DOES know how to push my buttons, so it’s a hard call to make. Some nights are more emotional than others and I can tell there is a direct correlation between her non-sleep related anxieties and her level of crying. Tonight, the asking started early and I knew right away it was because she’s thinking ahead about a 10-day trip she is taking with her dad. She loves her dad, but she is already worried about missing me. We had a really great day together today and she was feeling particularly close to me. When she first asked and I told her no, she started to collapse. After some discussion, I finally told myself, “What the fuck? She’s going to be on the trip in 2 nights anyway, so who gives a shit?” (Yes, I do curse that much, even in my own head.) I was also too tired to deal with crazy crying at the end of a long day, so I caved and said yes.

The funny thing is, she’s dead asleep right now and I’m not even with her. I’m in the dining room writing. Honestly, I think she just wants to sleep on my bitchin’ memory foam mattress.

I would never let this become a habit. The only exceptions I have made in the past are when we travel and share a bed in a hotel or my parents’ house, if she is sick (which is rare) or the ONE time she woke up during the night and was scared. I’m not kidding… once. She really is an amazing sleeper and I think a big part of this is because I have worked hard to foster healthy, independent sleeping patterns. I try not to judge anyone who co-sleeps. I don’t know their kid or family situation intimately and it’s your kid. You do what you want. My opinion; what I experienced in my own childhood, heard of from some other close friends’ and witnessed with my own kid, is that allowing long-term co-sleeping fosters and encourages a child to act on and embrace irrational fears. I think it’s super far from the worst thing you can do as a parent and I’m fine with other parents doing it if they feel it’s right for their family. But is sure is hard to say, “no” when they are begging you through teary eyes. And I’m no iron fisted rule-enforcer. Clearly, I said yes, tonight. So what I’m trying to find out now is, how much is too much? What is ok for us?

I’m not asking for you to answer these questions and I’m not even asking for your opinions because clearly, I have my own. But I’m curious – if you’re willing to share and you can DM me if you want – I’d love to hear from you! Can you answer this question for me:

*Did YOU sleep in bed with your parent(s) on a long-term basis as a child and how do you feel about it now as an adult?

*And if you are a parent, did your own sleeping arrangements as a child affect your decisions on sleeping as a parent? Please let me know!

(OK – last blog I stated that the next item on the table was HOMESCHOOLING – but I lied. Homeschooling got preempted by CO-SLEEPING. The HOMESCHOOLING shit hits the fan next. Promise.)

My blog has been woefully neglected. Now that Modern Family is on hiatus I thought I’d try to fill that void with some writing. One of the main reasons I haven’t been contributing to my blog is because I wasn’t sure what I wanted to write about. When I started this blog, many moons ago, Aubrey was just a little baby and I was a newly, struggling single mom. I could bitch and vent without the worry of affecting her reputation or (WHAT?)  career. Yeah. As a comedian, I felt the freedom to express my opinions on anything from breast feeding to horrible parenting.

My how life has changed! Fast forward 6 years and Aubrey is a television star, we live in a mansion and I’m driving a Maserati. OK, well maybe the last couple things aren’t true, the rented town house and Toyota Prius C are fine for now, but life took a very unexpected turn in 2011 which really left me not sure what to write about. Finding the balance between privacy and promotion has been a tricky task and the struggle to maintain (let alone grow) my own 17 year acting and comedy career has been frustrating, to say the least.

But one big, fat lesson I’ve learned in the last three years of my foray into the head-spinning world of Hollywood stage-momming is that motherhood is still the same. No matter how famous or wealthy my 6 yr old becomes, I still want all the same things for her. We are still “real” people. I still want to protect her. I still want to brag about her. I want her to thrive and learn to be a good, healthy person. I still want her to eat SOME of the broccoli, not just the pasta. I want her to be happy, but not a spoiled brat. If she weren’t on a hit tv show, this list would still pretty much be the same. I’m dealing with the same mom/kid issues, just sometimes in different venues – No, you many not have anymore donuts from craft services. Yes, you have to behave at The Emmys. No, you may not wear high heels to your friend’s house even if Sofia Vergara bought them for you. Seriously.

I guess what I’m trying to say is we are “real” people living in extraordinary scenarios and I hope we can always remain this way. Real. The youth “affluenza” epidemic in our current American society is shameful enough, so needless to say, it is out of control in much of the entertainment industry. I have been saddled with the task of combatting this creepy virus and I’ll be damned if I let the Hollywood machine take my kid down like so many before her.

I also want people to know there’s a lot more to our lives – MY life – than being “Lily’s mom”. You know I’ve actually had many people want to take my picture just because I’m “Lily’s mom”? Geez, people. Come on. In short, my dining room table is a mess, my dog still likes to shit on my bathmat after $2500 worth of training and I’m totally over dating. Dating as an Asian American, 40-something single mom of a child star should be its own reality show (with someone else as the star please).

So here’s to a new chapter in the FunnyYellowMom blog. I’m still Funny. Still a mom. Still yellow, too! I hope I can share a slice of our lives that is honest and interesting and hopefully fun.

The next topic on the chopping block: HOME SCHOOLING or Does This Mean I Have To Wear A Fanny Pack?

Not to be a big Debbie Downer on the 4th, but someone recently asked me if I think it’s offensive that Johnny Depp is playing a native Indian in the new Lone Ranger movie.

(And btw, I’m going to use the word “Indian” referring to Native Americans, Indigenous People, First People… because the Indians I know tell me they use the term Indian. Really. Straight from the Indians’ mouths.)

My two cents? Acting is acting and I think the best person should get the job but it only makes sense that that should probably be within that part’s specific race if it’s designated as such. I.e. Denzel Washington is never going to slather himself in white makeup and play George Washington. Can you imagine? People would riot!! WTF white people?!

I think if an actor of Japanese descent plays a Korean character, so what? An Italian guy plays a Jewish character, Mexican American plays a Colombian American (heeeyyy Manny Delgado!), ok but a blue eyed caucasian playing an Asian character is just stupid and racist and Johnny Depp playing Tonto is gross. Asians and Indians seem to get screwed the worst in this arena as enough people finally realized it was racist to do it to a black role and Latino roles are coming along, but they still get screwed too. Anyway, here’s something to chew on:

10 TIMES WHITE ACTORS PLAYED PEOPLE OF COLOR

I’m a tech moron so I don’t know how to put this link on here in a fancier way, but it is a small sampling. There are many, many more examples out there.

On a cheerier note… HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY! As an immigrant to this country, my adoptive country and the only home I’ve known (I came here as a 5 month old) I am so proud to be an American. (please don’t sing that song) I am so grateful to live in a country where anything is possible, where I can stand on stage with a microphone and say anything I want – about religion, politics, sex, drugs, children, animals – ANYTHING. And then get paid for it! I’m grateful to live in a country where I am valued and was educated and where I know my daughter can achieve whatever she wants. I’m grateful to live in a country that supports me as a single mother. I’m truly living the American dream and there is no place else I would want to call home. This is my country.

Have a safe and happy 4th!

Busy busy busy, currently without any regular child care help and my mind has been all over the place. It has been a productive and happy time, but nuts. Today, being Mother’s Day, I thought it would be a good night to gather some thoughts before I commence my cookie eating/tv watching binge. (Mad Men awaits!)

So I’ll share this… Something that I REALLY wanted to happen this weekend, didn’t happen. On Friday afternoon, I was informed that “The Newsroom” (HBO) might be bringing back my character from an episode I shot a co-star role for back in March. I was told it would work on Monday and maybe again the beginning of June and I’d hear over the weekend. Well, on Saturday, I found out they decided to cut the role from the script.

BUMMER!! I wasn’t pissed off, but I had a mini-mope fest, and then moved on. Too much other stuff to think about anyway. Who has time to waste feeling sorry for oneself? That’s one of the perks of being a single-mother/working actor: even when things are slow, it’s insanely busy, so one must move the fuck on, like a big girl.

Being a mom has also taught me a lot about appreciating what I have at the moment. Moms know that moments in life can be alarmingly brief, phases come and go and there’s something completely different looking you in the face in what feels like the blink of an eye. Sometimes not getting what you want can be the best thing that ever happens to you. And yeah, sometimes it just sucks balls, but life is such a great adventure when we learn to love what is happening at the moment. What other choice is there? It will be gone in an instant, so embrace it.

Here is my bright side of getting axed from The Newsroom:

– I was informed there’s always the possibility the character could come back in a future episode (there’s one more left to shoot in their season, so…)

– More importantly, Aaron Sorkin thought enough of me to write more scenes for me – and then chop them – but how cool is that?! I’ll take it. Honestly, it’s one of the most exciting indirect compliments I’ve ever received as an actor. Would it be totally gauche to put that on my resume?

“Aaron Sorkin digs me so much, he writes deletable lines for me”

I had a unique and memorable Mother’s Day weekend. I hope those of you who celebrated felt loved and appreciated.

To all the strong, beautiful, fun, hard-working, thoughtful, vibrant, intelligent, caring, compassionate, supportive, exhausted, talented, generous, selfless, stubborn, creative, loving, nurturing, driven, wise, wise-ass moms out there… HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY! You make a difference in this world every day. You matter and you’re awesome. All the crappy moms can take a flying leap. You know who you are.

This was a long, busy week for us and I told Aubrey she could have a “movie dinner” before bed. That’s when she’s allowed to sit in the ugly-but-comfortable-given-to-me-by-my-BFF-when-I-became-a-signgle-mom armchair and eat dinner from a tray while watching a DVD. It’s her favorite thing to do at night.

She picked “The Lorax” and snuggled under a blanket on our armchair. Then she offered to share the chair with me.

“Mom, do you want to sit next to me? There’s space right here for you mom and we can share the blanket,” she said, patting the tiny plot of cushion beside her.

As usual, I was scurrying around, busy assembling some sort of dinner, putting dishes away, filling the dog’s water bowl, throwing shoes on the shoe rack. I finally came back with food for both of us and again she offered, “And when you’re done eating you can sit next to me on the chair.”

Sometimes her clinginess is exhausting, but hers is truly the sweetest love I have ever known. It is genuine and pure. After we finished eating, we most certainly did sit together, sharing a blanket, on a Friday night.

Friendships that last! Viva Room 3!

Today, on this beautiful SoCal Sunday in February, Aubrey had a play date reunion with her old classmates from preschool TWO years ago, when they were all three years old. We were only missing a small handful of kids and their assistant teacher who has since moved out of state. Their teacher, Ms Erika, was able to come and it was a wonderful get together.

These kids have all gone on to new teachers and different schools, but after all this time, they remain friends. They still attend each others’ birthday parties and when they saw each other today, they ran to one another, yelling each others’ names, excited to play, snack and yes, bicker, as if no time had passed at all.

While I’d like to give all the credits to the amazing mamas (and papas) who have made the effort to stay friends and be nice, normal, sane parents who are respectful and kind to one another, I have to give the biggest shout out to their teacher, Ms Erika (and Ms Esmirna). They were special teachers who went the extra mile for our kids by creating a sense of community and respect in their class and the lasting friendships of our kids is the real testament to the difference these two women made in their lives.

Teachers – YOU CAN make a difference. What you do for children is so much more than teaching letters and numbers. Teachers of both little ones and older children, your classroom is a microcosm for life beyond the school walls. You are giving your students examples of leadership, respect, love, compassion, discipline, integrity and so much more.

Here’s to all the great teachers out there, fighting the good fight and changing lives. I hope there are many more Ms Erikas and Ms Esmirnas in Aubrey’s future. If you had great teachers in your life, count yourself lucky! They are a rare breed. What teachers changed your life and why?

Happy New Year From Us!

At the end of each year, my BFF, Jennie Wong (co-founder of CartCentric.com, syndicated columnist of Ask The Mompreneur, friend extraordinaire & more) compiles a “done” list. New Years is a time when we tend to focus a lot of energy on all of the things we think we “should” do in the new year. I’m going to go to the gym every day, I’m going to stop eating carbs, I’m going to balance the national budget. I’ve never been a fan of New Year’s resolutions. Why shlep ancient negativity onto a fresh new slate? I love Jennie’s idea of reminding yourself of what you DID accomplish. In this busy day and age, it is too easy to forget what we’ve done as we are so quickly on to the next conquest. I can’t recall why I even entered a room about 4 out of 5 times, although I mostly blame that on the brain cell sucking powers of motherhood.

Whether you published a book, ran a marathon or finally organized your sock drawer, why not take a few minutes to remind yourself that the year was a fruitful one of growth and hard work? Or even if it’s a reassurance that the year wasn’t ALL bad, that’s ok too. Go ahead, inspire yourself to move into the new year with hope, drive and purpose. Excelsior!

Amy Anderson’s DONE List 2012

– Booked and shot two new tv stand-up shows (Stand Up In Stilettos & Nick Mom Night Out)

– Booked a national commercial

– Banner year of most stand up work booked ever in my 15+ yr career, as a result…

– Highest income year ever in my life

– Got back in shape, lost approx 10 lbs & began training for a half marathon (Jan 20, 2013)

– Got the ball rolling on financial and estate planning

– Re-established a healthy family relationship with my brother & obtained reliable, flexible, trustworthy, much needed child-care help in one-fell-swoop

– Paid off a substantial chunk of debt & starting to see the light at the end of a loooong, shit-filled tunnel

– Obtained health & dental insurance for both Aubrey and me

– Turned 40 and was given a VERY CLEAN bill of health after first ever annual exam including full blood work

– Rid myself of a toxic relationship and stayed happily single all year

– Most importantly, I am proud of the kind of mom I have been to Aubrey and I am the happiest I have ever been. Even though the year was incredibly busy (head spinning, to put it lightly) it was wonderful. And by focusing in on myself and my daughter, I experienced the deepest feelings of peace and joy I’ve ever had. I can honestly tell you, it doesn’t suck.

This past Friday, Aubrey, Uncle Eric and I made a trek down to San Diego to check out the much talked about horse show, Cavalia.

Aubrey’s riding instructor told her about the show several months ago and ever since, she has been begging me to go see it. I am a horse enthusiast as well so we were both really excited at the opportunity.

Meeting Cavalia artist, Spencer, & her horse before the show

Cavalia was described to me as Cirque du Soleil on horses (Artistic Director, Normand LaTourelle was one of the pioneers of Cirque du Soleil) but the horses are the real stars of the show. Don’t go expecting the horses to be swinging from the trapeze or walking on tightropes, but they do do some really amazing things. You’ll see trick riding, vaulting, jumping, dressage, Roman riding and more, but my favorite aspect of the show was seeing the intimacy and trust between the horses and the humans. The subtle commands and the sensitivity of each animal to its trainer was, at times, breathtaking.

One of the reasons I was so excited to bring Aubrey to this show is because I’ve long been opposed to traditional circuses with performing animals. I’ve explained to Aubrey that I didn’t feel it was a humane way for animals to live and they are often abused or mistreated. I had heard from many “horse people” that Cavalia was different and when I witnessed it with my own eyes, the attitude of the horses made it obvious that they were right. These horses took joy in their performances and the playfulness with their trainers was evident in each act.

Aubrey LOVED the show, but faded during the last 5-10 minutes. It was almost 3 hours past her bedtime!

Cavalia will be in downtown San Diego, in the Gaslamp District right next to Petco Park (can’t miss that giant white tent!) through the end of December and right now they have a group special of Buy 5, Get 5 Free! It’s a great family show, with some matinee times for the little ones. We went to a night time showing and it got a tad too late for Aubrey! Check it out now before they trot on down under to Australia! The only downside is your kids will be begging you for a horse for a long time afterwards, but trust me, it’s worth it.

Let the My Little Pony Obsession Live On! She has the wedding castle toy, about 6 or 7 different ponies, a MLP train, the “My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic: Royal Wedding” DVD, MLP bed sheets, an actual horse riding helmet with a MLP looking cartoon pony on it, MLP “Pinkie Pie” t-shirt and… the list goes on and on.

I like the cartoon series (which is on the HUB network). I love ponies and I think they are really cute. I love the different characters, the music and singing is Broadway quality and the writing is funny. Yes, it’s funny.

So Aubrey was pretty stoked to receive a review copy of the latest DVD MY LITTLE PONIES: FRIENDSHIP IS MAGIC: ADVENTURES IN THE CRYSTAL EMPIRE” which officially releases on Dec 4. You can pre-order on Amazon for only $9.99. Woohoo!

She’s already addicted to the new DVD and has seen it about a zillion times in just a few days and I have to say it’s nice to have a distraction from all the holiday gift mania on kid’s tv right now. Speaking of which, this would be a PERFECT gift for your little pony fan! Here is a clip from the new DVD for you to enjoy. Happy holidays!

*I did not receive compensation for this post other than a screening copy to facilitate this review. All opinions are my own and my 5 yr old daughters. The ponies had NOTHING to do with this post. Nothing.
