BIRNS, Inc., an Oxnard manufacturer of high-performance lights and connectors for the subsea and nuclear power markets is proud to announce the recipients of its 2026 scholarship program. BIRNS recognized four outstanding students from Ventura County for their leadership, achievements, and future potential.
Each year, BIRNS awards scholarships to students who demonstrate strong leadership, academic achievement and a commitment to their communities.
Debra K. Geist Scholarship
Established in 2013, this scholarship program was created in honor of the company’s late Purchasing Agent. It encourages and recognizes high school students in Ventura County who demonstrate strong leadership potential.
Kassandra Ruvalcaba Ortiz, a graduate from Hueneme High School, was selected as this year’s recipient. She will be attending UC Davis in the Fall to pursue her undergraduate degree.
93033 Scholarship
This program was created to support Ventura County high school seniors residing in the 93033 area code who demonstrate leadership potential and academic achievement, and was awarded to Natalie Mata, from Channel Islands High School. She will attend Cal Poly San Luis Obispo to pursue her Bachelor’s in Environmental Engineering.
BIRNS Employee & Family Scholarship
The BIRNS Employee & Family Scholarship recognizes members of the BIRNS team and/or their immediate family members who demonstrate exceptional leadership potential and achievement. This year scholars were two employees, Irene Ramirez, Oil-Filled Wire Processing Technician, and Daniella Campuzano, HR/Marketing Coordinator. Ramirez is attending the International College of California to pursue a professional certificate in Microsoft Suite Applications and business programs. Campuzano is attending the University of California State, Long Beach to pursue her Masters in Business Administration.

BIRNS, Inc., a global leader in the design and manufacturing of high-performance connectors, custom cable assemblies and lighting systems, is pleased to introduce Sophia Bruner as the company’s new Engineering Manager. In her role she leads BIRNS’ cross-functional engineering teams, overseeing the design, development, and scaling of products to achieve quality, cost, and delivery objectives. She is also responsible for planning, directing, and coordinating all design and manufacturing engineering activities.
With more than 30 years of expertise across manufacturing, engineering, quality engineering, and operations, Bruner brings both skill and progressive leadership experience to her new role at BIRNS. Prior to joining the company, she held senior leadership roles including Senior Engineering Manager at Tesla, Director of Quality at Veev by Lennar, and Manufacturing Engineering Manager at Sikorsky Aircraft/Lockheed Martin, supporting complex products in highly regulated and fast-paced environments.

BIRNS, Inc., a global leader in the design and manufacturing of high-performance subsea connectors, custom cable assemblies and lighting systems, has announced the hiring of Travis Derrington as Project Manager. In his role, he is responsible for managing key client projects, planning and spearheading all aspects to ensure on time completion, within budget and scope. He also oversees workflow, and helps coordinate production efforts and schedules, collaborating with other department heads to ensure that goals and KPIs are met.
His professional background is a great fit for the company’s customers, many of which are in the subsea and defense markets. He joined the BIRNS team with 23 years of service in the US Navy, with an expertise in submarines and deep submergence systems, retiring honorably as a Senior Chief (E-8). During his successful military career, he served on the ballistic missile submarine USS Ohio (SSGN 726), at Seal Delivery Vehicle Team 1 working with the Advanced Seal Delivery System and Dry Deck Shelters and as the Mechanical Division Leading Chief Petty Officer for the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory.
After years of spearheading projects during complex missions at sea, Derrington is comfortable now leveraging his discipline, teamwork and strategic planning skills in the civilian sector. “It’s been an exciting and welcome challenge leading projects with the excellent team at BIRNS,” said Derrington. “The terrain may be different, but the core principles of leadership and execution are the same. I am excited to contribute to the success of our customers’ advanced subsea programs.”
One of the company’s customers is the U.S. Navy, with which BIRNS has been partnering since 1957. “We are thrilled to welcome Derrington to this important role,” said Eric Birns, President & CEO. “His naval experience and understanding of crewed and uncrewed subsea systems, and his passion for contributing to the success of some of our most high-profile projects are key qualities that have already made him a strong addition to our team.”

This year marks significant milestones for BIRNS, Inc., a global leader in high-performance connector and lighting systems, as the company celebrates its 70th anniversary. BIRNS has invested in a new state-of-the-art extreme depth hydrostatic pressure testing facility. The new system includes a custom designed pressure vessel capable of tests to 20,000 psi (1380 bar) and which features angular positioning and can simulate sinusoidal motion. The facility also allows technicians to utilize more than one testing vessel concurrently, to provide greatly increased throughput.
The newest addition to the testing capabilities can even be used in tandem with an extreme low temperature, extreme depth testing system capable of 10,000 psi. This bespoke testing fixture successfully allows 48 hour+ continuous precision testing of connectors and cable assemblies at 6km in a controlled 2°C (±1°C) environment.
