watched this amazing vid the other night, but got to to wondering, is there a specific or only certain areas where sprites and common? From my vantage point on the NSW central tablelands now, and even in my past lives living coastal around Sydney and mid North coast, i have seen many storms from a long distance away, horizon far away,
but not a single time have i seen a sprite.

i am assuming they can only be caught by camera? can they be seen with the naked eye if you are looking for...

Time for another thread to make for some targets!
Had Macomb in NW IL the other day for the monster high risk, would have been a reasonably easy 2hr drive to intercept the long-tracker in E IA, what a day that was.

Today looks just as strong in Iowa, perhaps a tiny bit more instability than the other day but less powerful forcing aloft and a weaker surface low. They still could go to high risk on the final outlook but probably hold at mod.

It’s raining heavily in Auckland again this morning. On top of the record deluge of 249mm in the 24 hours up until 1am this morning.

One person is confirmed dead in floodwaters on the North Shore.

The airport remains closed with heavy flooding through the terminals.

The central city is a disaster zone where the stormwater system appears to have completely failed due to the rain and an incoming high tide. Cars are floating in the streets.

This little charmer was brewing quietly away in perfect conditions with high SSTs, low shear, and a lovely upper high for outflow. It literally flew under the radar and is one of those small TCs in which models have a hard time predicting. First named storm was Hurricane Alvin (#01E) which petered out after briefly reaching Cat 1 strength.

Tropical Storm Barbara (#02E) is currently intensifying, however, and could be more interesting although also likely to be a fish storm

JTWC is predicting it to be a decent fish storm peaking at 95 kt (1 min sustained) which is a high end Cat 2 Hurricane (~Cat 3 TC on Aus Scale).

I was surprised to see no thread on this. Paris has just set an all time record today and may break it by 2C by the end of the day.

There have already been a few storms (including some odd ones in the middle east!) but the one bearing down on Japan right now (currently tropical Storm Jongdari, will be a typhoon in a day or less) could be the most significant to date.

Current models have it hitting Tokyo as a high end cat 2 (SS) typhoon. Lots of wind and rain.
