In-Person Events
We are pleased to announce that CHHAPS will once again sponsor in-person events in 2025. For the first time since 2019, we will once again have Canadian Horse breed demos at the Equine Affaire in West Springfield, Massachusetts, November 6-9, 2025. If you live in the Northeast US and eastern Canada and are interested in participating, contact our Event Coordinator, Megan Currier. (Note, you must be a current CHHAPS member to participate). We will also be sponsoring an education exhibit and demos at the Provincial Winter Fair in Kamloops, BC, September 19-22, 2025. If you would like to participate or volunteer, contact Elspeth McDougall.
We welcome all CHHAPS members to submit applications for either individual or group grants for appearances at public events this year! We can provide loans of our beautiful pop up displays as well as rack cards to increase awareness of the Canadian Horse.
Major Educational Project
We have exciting news on the educational front of our organization. This year, CHHAPS is providing assistance to Roxanne Salinas, a founding member of CHHAPS and long-time historian of the Canadian Horse breed, with production of her upcoming book, Canada’s National Horse: A History. “There’s a lot of information out there about the Canadian Horse from about 1900 on, but there’s 250 years of history that isn’t as well known,” Ms. Salinas says. Look for a “sneak peek” in the Summer 2025 issue of the Canadian Horse Journal, in time to celebrate Canada Day! And visit this page for updates on this important project.
We’re taking a break…
After getting feedback from our members, CHHAPS decided to focus our efforts on in-person events to educate the public about the critically endangered Canadian Horse. Therefore, we regretfully will not be holding the CHHAPS Challenge: “100 Hours in 100 Days” virtual event in 2025. However, we are keeping the private Facebook pages for prior years’ CHHAPS Challenges open to all who participated, so that they can continue to share their accomplishments, challenges, questions, and lessons learned. Special thanks to CHHAPS Challenge Coordinator Liz Piacentini for the tremendous amount of effort she put in to design and run the CHHAPS Challenge for four years (2020-2024)!
We recognize that our members are far-flung. For those wishing to share adventures and accomplishments with their Canadian Horses “long distance,” we encourage you to enroll and participate in the CHHAPS Performance and Versatility programs. For more information, check out the Awards Programs page.

From the CHHAPS inaugural show at in Gibsons BC in 2003, and over the next 17 years, CHHAPS has hosted or sponsored more than 30 Canadian Horse shows and exhibitions at major venues in British Columbia and the United States, exposing Canadian Horses to many hundreds of thousands of people, most of whom had never seen or even heard of a Canadian Horse before. These include the Pacific National Exhibition (PNE) in Vancouver BC; the Interior Provincial Exhibition (IPE) in Armstrong BC; the CHHAPS Pacific Canadian Horse Show at the Maple Ridge Equi-Sport Centre in Maple Ridge BC; the Alberni Valley Fall Fair Grounds, Nanaimo BC; the CHHAPS Island Open Horse Show at Beban Park, Nanaimo BC; the BC Interior Canadian Horse Show at the Historic O’Keefe Ranch in Vernon BC; the Mane Event in Chilliwack BC; the Northwest Horse Fair and Expo in Oregon USA; and the Equine Affaire in Massachusetts USA.
When we had to suspend live events due to the global COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, we searched for an innovative way to hold events. CHHAPS Event Coordinator Liz Piacentini, who had organized breed demos at the Equine Affaire, stepped up to the plate and created a new virtual event to meet this need: the CHHAPS Challenge “100 Hours in 100 Days.” Since 2021, the CHHAPS Challenge has created a community of horse people across the continent as participants shared their achievements and challenges, raised awareness of the Canadian Horse and other endangered breeds, forged relationships between CHHAPS and other rare breed organizations, and raised thousands of dollars to benefit CHHAPS educational efforts and the Canadian Horse Rescue and Rehoming Society. We are pleased to announce that we will be offering the CHHAPS Challenge again from June 1-September 10, 2024! No matter where you live or what breed of horse you have, we encourage you to join!
