This report provides an overview in chapter 2 of the biorefineries operating in Europe, emphasizing the bioreactors used, their modes of operation, and their design and scale-up. In chapter 3, an overview of biogas plants, anaerobic digesters, and their operating condition statuses. Chapter 4 is the general background on computational fluid dynamics and the software packages. If you need additional information, please do not hesitate to <a href="/contact">contact</a> us.</p> <p><strong>Aerodynamic Flows</strong><br /> Aerodynamics, a part of fluid dynamics, describes the laws of the flow of air or other gases, furthermore the emerging or varying forces on solid surfaces due to the effect of the gas flow. Everything that moves in the atmosphere gets in interaction with air. That is like driving a car, aerodynamics plays an important role in our daily life beginning with the simplest things up to the complicated technological devices. Maybe the most important impact of this science is in the planning of flying objects – eg.: airplanes, rockets – and the determination of the emerging forces and moments on these structures. These effects are also important at non flying objects which are moving on the ground especially at higher speed. This is why aerodynamics play also an important role in car industry with the goal to achieve a profitable air resistance (or drag coefficient) combined with lower fuel consumption.</p> <p><strong>Multiphase Flows</strong><br /> Multiphase flows are very common in industrial applications. Therefore it is important to investigate them in detail to be able to predict the behavior of such systems and optimize them for best performance. Verified simulation tools and methods can provide a detailed insight at reasonable time and cost frame. Computational fluid dynamic (CFD) can give a full spatial and temporal representation of multiphase systems. Using CFD, different multiphase phenomena such as mass transfer, heat transfer, bubble or droplet breakup, coalescence etc in complex geometries can be investigated and interpreted to help improving the process.</p> <p><strong>Reactive Flows</strong><br /> Reactive flows are all types of fluid flows with chemical reactions occurring within the fluid phase, at the interphase between different fluid phases or at interphases to solids. Gasphase combustion phenomena are the most important application of reactive flow modelling, while heterogeneous combustion (gas-liquid or gas-solid) is still a minor research field. Simulation of reactive flows is getting more and more important, since they offer a possibility to gain insight to processes having harsh conditions, e.g. high temperature and pressure combustion. Additionally,  optimization of existing processes can be performed by modeling studies following design-of-experiment (DOE) approaches. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is a valuable simulation tool to gain this information by solving the governing differential equations. CFD does not replace experiments completely, but helps to give detailed insight into apparatuses where experimental data are not easily available.</p> <p class="rtejustify"> <strong>Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) of Separation Processes</strong> is a course at the TU Wien with the aim to learn the basics of computational fluid dynamics as a tool in process engineering and about scopes and limitations of modern CFD packages. Therefore, typical fluid dynamic problems in thermal process engineering are investigated: mixing, gas and liquid distribution, fluid flow in separation devices, reduction of pressure drops, mass transfer between phases, multiphase flow. Description of flow problems; basics of computational fluid dynamics; scopes and limitations of modern CFD packages; critical analysis of CFD results; process engineering case studies. However, complex reactors or separation devices cannot be described by such models only. Reliable answers to questions such as How does a geometry change affect the process performance?, What is the effect of different process conditions? or How is the partial load behavior? are needed but may be expensive especially if they have to be derived from experiments.</p> <p> Numerical flow simulation has become an effective alternative. By three dimensional discretization of the Navier-Stokes equation, the continuity equation, the energy equation and additional terms (species balances, reactions, external forces, multiphase flow interactions) it is possible to obtain local information about the flow field.</p> <p> The research group has started early to make use of CFD as an important tool in chemical engineering.
