Lecturer: Mr. Yuji Mitsuda, President & CEO, Keishindo Co., Ltd.

Theme: “Ebi Senbei Can Still Evolve.”

ASEAN-NAGOYA CLUB welcomed Mr. Yuji Mitsuda, President & CEO of Keishindo Co., Ltd., a long-established Japanese confectionery company founded in 1866, as the guest speaker for its regular meeting. His lecture, titled “Ebi Senbei Can Still Evolve,” explored the company’s 160-year history, its dedication to traditional craftsmanship, and its continuous pursuit of innovation.

Celebrating its 160th anniversary in 2026, Keishindo has devoted generations to the art of making ebi senbei—traditional Japanese shrimp crackers—while growing alongside Japan’s food culture. During the lecture, Mr. Mitsuda introduced the company’s journey from its founding to the present day, the origins of ebi senbei, traditional production methods, its commitment to carefully selected ingredients, and its approach to developing products that reflect changing times and customer preferences.

Mr. Mitsuda explained that preserving tradition does not simply mean continuing to make the same products in the same way. Rather, it means protecting the essential values that have been passed down through generations while continuing to pursue new forms of deliciousness suited to each era. While respecting the craftsmanship and techniques developed over many years, Keishindo continues to improve its production methods and explore new products, expanding the possibilities of ebi senbei.

The lecture also highlighted Keishindo’s deep commitment to shrimp, the essential ingredient at the heart of its products. As natural environments and seafood supplies continue to change, the company works closely with production regions and suppliers to secure high-quality ingredients and make the most of the unique characteristics of each variety. This respect for the blessings of the sea reflects a philosophy of craftsmanship that has been cultivated throughout the company’s long history.

Mr. Mitsuda also introduced Keishindo’s efforts to create products that go beyond the traditional role of ebi senbei as a Japanese gift. The company continues to explore new possibilities through products inspired by Japan’s four seasons and cultural traditions, new flavors suited to contemporary lifestyles, and initiatives designed to make its products more accessible to visitors from around the world. These efforts demonstrate how a company rooted in tradition can continue to embrace change and explore new markets.

International expansion was another important topic of the lecture. Mr. Mitsuda spoke about the potential to introduce ebi senbei and the culture surrounding Japanese confectionery to a wider global audience. While food cultures and preferences differ from country to country, Keishindo aims to communicate the quality, craftsmanship, and cultural values that have long distinguished its products in Japan.

The lecture was followed by an engaging Q&A session covering a wide range of topics, including ingredient sourcing, product development, overseas expansion, Muslim-friendly initiatives, and multilingual product information. Participants also asked why Keishindo has continued to specialize in ebi senbei throughout its long history, leading to a discussion about the importance of developing deep expertise and building upon a company’s distinctive strengths.

The lecture provided participants with a valuable opportunity to understand that tradition and innovation are not opposing concepts. For a company with a long history, continuing to evolve and take on new challenges is precisely what allows its traditions and values to be passed on to future generations.

“Ebi Senbei Can Still Evolve.”

Rather than simply relying on its 160-year heritage, Keishindo continues to pursue new forms of deliciousness and value for the future. For the ASEAN students who participated in the session, Mr. Mitsuda’s message offered valuable insights into what it means to build a sustainable business, preserve tradition, and create the future through continuous innovation.

ASEAN-NAGOYA CLUB will continue to invite distinguished leaders from a wide range of industries, providing opportunities for ASEAN students to learn about Japanese business culture and craftsmanship while fostering stronger connections between Japan and ASEAN.

Theme: Building a Sustainable Healthcare System through Digital Transformation and Data Utilization

ASEAN-NAGOYA CLUB welcomed Mr. Masanari Nojima, Chief Executive Officer of Excentia Co., Ltd., as the guest speaker for its regular meeting. His lecture focused on how digital transformation (DX) and data utilization can help address the challenges facing Japan’s healthcare industry and contribute to a more sustainable healthcare system.

During the presentation, Mr. Nojima discussed the current issues confronting Japan’s healthcare sector, including workforce shortages, rising medical costs, and the need for greater digitalization. He explained how these challenges can be addressed by leveraging digital technologies while maintaining the high standards of safety and reliability that characterize Japan’s healthcare system.

Drawing on his extensive experience in the medical device industry, Mr. Nojima emphasized that successful digital transformation is not simply about introducing new technologies. Rather, it requires a deep understanding of healthcare operations and close collaboration with medical professionals to develop practical solutions that improve both patient care and hospital management.

The lecture also introduced innovative approaches to utilizing medical equipment data to create new value for healthcare providers, manufacturers, and distributors. By making effective use of data while ensuring appropriate privacy protection, healthcare organizations can improve operational efficiency, support better decision-making, and contribute to a more sustainable healthcare ecosystem.

Another important message of the lecture was that transformation should serve to preserve essential values rather than replace them. Mr. Nojima highlighted the importance of embracing innovation while continuing to uphold the trust, safety, and quality that have long been the foundation of Japan’s healthcare system.

The session concluded with an engaging Q&A covering topics such as the practical challenges of healthcare DX, the future potential of data utilization, and responses to an aging society. Participants also discussed the importance of encouraging organizational change through small but meaningful successes, enabling healthcare professionals to recognize the value that digital technologies can bring to their daily work.

The lecture provided valuable insights into how digital innovation can strengthen healthcare while addressing broader social challenges. ASEAN-NAGOYA CLUB will continue to invite distinguished speakers from a wide range of industries to promote learning, innovation, and stronger partnerships between Japan and ASEAN countries.

Lecturer: Mr. Yusuke Aoki, Executive Vice President, Yamamotoya
Theme: The Challenge of a Fifth-Generation Leader of a Long-Established Udon Restaurant

In April 2026, ASEAN-NAGOYA CLUB hosted a special lecture featuring Mr. Yusuke Aoki, Executive Vice President of Yamamotoya, a long-established restaurant company representing Nagoya.

Until now, our club has mainly focused on cultural exchange among ASEAN countries. However, as a new initiative, we have begun inviting Japanese business leaders to provide opportunities for participants to gain practical insights based on real-world experience. This lecture marked the first session of this new series, featuring a representative from a company that has long been rooted in the local community.

At the beginning of the session, Mr. Aoki spoke about his career path and the background of his involvement in the family business. Drawing on his experiences, he shared his perspective on how to approach business with a focus on “what value should be delivered to society.” The participants listened with great interest.

During the lecture, he discussed the concept of maintaining a “balance between change and continuity” as a key factor in sustaining a business over a long period. Through specific examples, he explained the importance of preserving traditional elements while also adapting business practices and value offerings in response to changing times.

He also emphasized that in today’s business environment, it is essential not only to provide high-quality products but also to effectively communicate the underlying philosophy and experiential value behind them. This perspective offered new insights for the participating international students.

Furthermore, he introduced initiatives that emphasize engagement with the local community and society. His approach to building relationships through business activities drew considerable interest from many participants.

Following the lecture, a discussion session was held with the international students. Questions were raised regarding Japanese management practices and key considerations when expanding business overseas. In response, Mr. Aoki provided thoughtful explanations on the importance of respecting cultural differences and understanding others from their perspective, leading to active and meaningful dialogue.

Even after the session, several participants remained to ask individual questions, reflecting the high level of engagement throughout the event.

ASEAN-NAGOYA CLUB will continue to provide such opportunities, aiming to offer practical insights into Japanese business and to promote mutual understanding between international students and Japan.

  7. Valentin Noble (フランス)
  8. Lim Lyhong (カンボジア)

The participants are as follows:
1. Director Tetsuro Yamamura
2. Advisor Takao Nishi
3. Chia-jung Wu (Taiwan)
4. Gito Santos (East Timor)
5. Soush Mony Odham (Cambodia)
6. Samuth Nenchan (Cambodia)
7. Valentin Noble (France)
8. Lim Lyhong (Cambodia)

This week, Chia-jung Wu talked about how to stay productive in the pandemic of the new coronavirus.
As a countermeasure against the new coronavirus pandemic, many countries have closed schools and universities, and companies are also working from home. Therefore, I spend a lot of time at home. Under such circumstances, maintaining the effectiveness of learning and productivity of work has become an issue. According to Mr. Wu, there are five main ways to clear this task.

The first is to change into work clothes. Even at home, it’s better to separate private and work clothes. When it’s time to work, put on your work clothes and you’ll feel like you’re in the office, motivating and staying productive.

The second is to listen to relaxing music. Humans work long hours, get tired, and lose concentration, so listening to relaxing music can make you feel better.
The third is to utilize the app. Specifically, time management and website blocker apps. This app can block SNS such as Facebook that interferes with work during your desired time. This allows you to focus your work and research and use your time efficiently.

Fourth, create a feasible list or subdivide your work. If you do not set big goals every day, make a detailed list of work that can be achieved at this time, and clear each one, you will feel a sense of accomplishment and excitement and It can be maintained.

Finally, take a break and exercise. Health is paramount, so you should also have time to rest and have coffee or tea. Also, working from home does not move much, so it is better to do exercises such as stretching and yoga that you can do at home.

In addition, in the discussion, we all had a little discussion about stress and depression. Some people may feel anxious or suffer from mental illness due to corona sickness. To deal with such mental problems, it is important to interact with people and think about three things to thank before going to bed.

As the new coronavirus continues, this meeting was a great opportunity for the participants to stay productive during the pandemic.

  • Rith Chanmalika (カンボジア)
  • Lim Lyhong (カンボジア)

This week, Ms. Ean Chhorida talked about what International students should learn while studying in Japan.
Studying in Japan gives you more important knowledge and valuable experience than just writing reports and treatises. The first is to acquire new skills. Specifically, it is the acquisition of a language. Of course, when you come to Japan, you can easily improve your Japanese ability, but in fact, you also have the opportunity to learn other languages. For example, at Nagoya University, language courses such as French, Chinese, Russian, Spanish, and Portuguese are offered free of charge. In addition, you can learn skills such as drawing, manga, and handmade. Besides, you can also strengthen your soft skills. For example, time management, savings practices, exercise, dieting, online communication methods, etc.

Secondly is international exchange. Universities in Japan have many international students from various countries. For example, at Nagoya University, there are many international students from Europe and Africa as well as Asia, so there are many opportunities to interact with them. Through international exchange, you can introduce your country and broaden your horizons. The more acquaintances you have, the more chances you have.

Third, you can learn about Japanese culture, Japanese ways of thinking and techniques. Japan has a special culture and there is much to learn. For example, Japanese hospitality is unique and wonderful, unlike any other country. Also, since Japan has many natural disasters, you can observe how to deal with them. You can also learn about Japanese business by interacting with Japanese entrepreneurs.

Finally, you are ready to connect to your future course. For example, you can now consider what you want to be in the future and collect materials and literature that are not in your home country for your profession. For example, Cambodia is a developing country, so literature in various fields, including law, is limited. Therefore, I would like to utilize my time in Japan to collect literature related to the profession I want to be in the future and make it useful after returning home from Japan.

This week, Ms. Phuong Anh Ngoc Pham presented about Vietnam and the new coronavirus (COVID-19).

Vietnam is said to have succeeded in combatting COVID-19. As the infection of COVID-19 spreads around the world, as of July 12, 2020, the number of infected people in Vietnam was only 373, and the number of deaths were zero. Despite its population of nearly 100 million, these figures make Vietnam one of the most effective countermeasures against COVID-19 in the world.

Why was Vietnam able to control the domestic infection of the new coronavirus at the world’s top level? According to Ms. Anh, there are various reasons, but one of them is that Vietnam has taken strict measures from an early stage. For example, when information on people infected with COVID-19 was released in December 2019, the government identified areas of infection, closed schools, and restricted entry from abroad. Social isolation had also been implemented. Currently, Vietnamese are gradually allowed to enter the country, but 14 days of forced quarantine is applied. In addition, the government was thoroughly disseminating information on television and the Internet. In particular, the personal information of the infected person and the place where the infected person went are disclosed.

Disclosure of personal information of infected people has helped prevent the spread of infection, but it has been argued that it may be an infringement of privacy rights. For example, in Japan, disclosure of infected person information is not permitted because it violates the right to privacy. However, Vietnam prioritizes the life and health of its people over the right to privacy.

The impact of COVID-19 on Vietnam’s economy is significant. Vietnam has implemented a thorough segregation policy and border blockade policy, so the economy is naturally damaged. Tourism, agriculture and transportation have been hit hard.

As for the future prospects, there are possibilities and challenges for economic revival. Potentially, increased consumption of local products, increased foreign investment, increased exports due to trade agreements between Europe and Vietnam, and transformation into an Internet society (online learning, cashless payment). Challenges include people wanting to save more than personal spending, product quality challenges, and infrastructure development.

This time, participants learned a lot about Vietnam’s measures against COVID-19. Participants also compared the situation in their respective countries and had lively discussions.

This week, Gito Santos presented his topic about "Basic Information and Investment Potential of Timor-Leste".

Timor-Leste is located in the eastern part of Timor Island, which is located in the eastern part of Indonesia. The area is approximately 14,900 square kilometers. The population is about 1.31 million. East Timor declared its independence from Indonesia in 2002. The unemployment rate is 12%. The poverty rate was 41.1% in 2014.

The main industry in Timor-Leste is agriculture. According to the Long-Term National Development Plan (2011-2030), the government is focusing on food crop agriculture, horticulture, plantations, forestry, livestock and fishing. In addition, oil is being developed as a valuable national financial resource. Imported goods are including petroleum products, food and beverages, capital goods, construction materials, vehicles and spare parts. Exports are including organic coffee, fish, pepper and nuts. Furthermore, the tourism industry is also attracting attention as an important industry. In 2019, the number of foreign tourists were about 260,000.

It has been about 20 years since independence. Timor-Leste, which is said to be a young country, faces various challenges. For example, lack of human resources, handling or management of agriculture, traditional cultivation techniques, lack of knowledge about pest and disease control, and lack of equipment. In addition, lack of information on traditional local events and visas, high transportation costs, poor security and customer service management are issues for the tourism industry.

However, there are many areas to invest in. These include oil and gas – upstream and downstream, agribusiness, forestry, fishing, tourism, light industry and economic infrastructure.
In terms of regional cooperation, Timor-Leste is currently applying for membership in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Attention is focused on when the membership will be granted.
This time, participants were able to learn a lot about Timor-Leste.

This week, Mr. Tetsuro Yamamura, a director of the ASEAN Nagoya Club, made a presentation on “Japanese Business Manners”. Business etiquette is a set of rules that govern the way people interact with one another in business, with customers, suppliers, with inside or outside bodies. It is all about conveying the right image and behaving in an appropriate way. Business etiquette can sound like it focuses on small things that are unimportant, but all together they make a big difference to the workplace and the kind of responses received in all areas.

If you don’t understand about business etiquette, it can make people involved in your work feel uncomfortable and give you a bad impression. In that case, you may not be able to reach the goal of your business negotiations or won’t get cooperation within the company.

He mainly talked about “4 manners to avoid shame”. It’s about language, grooming, punctuality, and separating work and private life.

The first is language. Mainly, there are “greetings”, “honorifics” and “honorific titles”. It may be difficult for foreigners, but it is important while doing business in Japan. Being polite is important everywhere. In Japan, politeness is very closely connected to respect. Treat the youngest attendant of the meeting with respect and they won’t forget it, when once leading the company you are doing business with.

The second is grooming. In business, you need to interact not only with people you are close to, but also with people who have different positions, ages, and ways of thinking. In such a case, the other person judges the person based on their appearance, so it is important to have a good appearance that does not cause discomfort. The most important thing is “cleanliness” and “elegance”. Being filthy makes you uncomfortable and lowers your reputation.

The third is punctuality. In Japan, people who cannot be punctual are not trusted in the business (1 minute, 1 second). If you are late, you must contact the other person, apologize for the reason, and tell them your estimated time of arrival.

The last one, separate work and private life. Be aware that you are waged during working hours and avoid behavior that is not related to your work. In addition, since there is a duty of confidentiality in contracts with business partners, it is essential not to easily leak information to others. For example, it is prohibited to view non-business sites from the company’s PC or send private emails from the company’s email address.

The meeting gave an important knowledge to international students, especially to those who wish to work in Japan after graduation.

  • Lim Lyhong (カンボジア)

• Director Teruo Oguro
• Advisor Takao Nishi
• Samuth Nenchan (Cambodia)
• Quynh Tran (Vietnam)
• Megan Finlay (USA)
• Lim Lyhong (Cambodia)
This week, Ms. Meghan from the United States, Mr. Samuth from Cambodia, and Ms. Quynh from Vietnam presented information and fake news in their respective countries.

First, Ms. Megan, from USA, has reviewed the definitions of fake news and misinformation. Fake news is “articles borrowed from the form of news that is widespread on the Internet or other media, generally created for political influence or as a joke.” Misinformation, on the other hand, is “wrong information or information intended to be deceived.” A characteristic of fake news is that there is some flaw in the context. In addition, the articles are emotional and appear to be legitimate news sources. Ms. Meghan also played and explained a video of an example of politically used fake news in the United States.

In Cambodia, SNS is very popular among young people. Cambodia has a total population of about 16 million, of which about 10 million have Facebook accounts. The information shared on Facebook also includes political fake news. Therefore, the people who share it are subject to crackdowns, but how to distinguish it from the freedom of expression of the people is also being discussed.

Fake news is also a social problem in Vietnam. For example, a fake news about the poisonous drink that produced by a local company. The rumor said that anyone drinks it is going to die. All the people began to refrain from buying those drinks. As a result, the company suffered from great loss.

In this discussion, we were able to confirm that fake news has become a social issue today. In the future, further discussions will be needed on countermeasures against it.
