2:00p - Pre event workshop and practice climb for new/novice/first time competitors
Head Judge, Doug Tochtrop, will take anyone who is unfamiliar with the competition format, new to competing, or just generally feeling shaky and wanting to get a bit more comfortable, around for a walk-through of the events. This will be similar to the morning walk-through on Saturday, except you will be with a group of your peers at the same, or similar, skill level, and the competition isn't waiting for the walk through to finish to start. No Pressure! Ask as many questions as you can think of! There will also be a practice tree set up as a Speed Climb for anyone who would like to run it to do so with no scoring or time kept, unless you would like us to time you :).
*** Please watch for updates! We may start much earlier depending on how many sign up!
And we may ask competitors who are willing and able, to run the first event in their group line up on Friday to allow for a timely finish on Saturday.

Masters Challenge!!! Masters will be made up of the 2 highest placing Hawaiian Residents, the 2 highest placing nonresidents, and the highest placing female competitor. Volunteers arrive by 8:00am Climbers arrive between 8:00 and 8:30am Boots off the ground at 9:00am

- The venue will be instating and enforcing Covid 19 protocols. You should expect to have to wear masks during the entire event and distance when possible.
- Competitors and any volunteers who are hoping to judge or enter event rings must bring full PPE and wear it at all times behind the tape.
- Event will be photographed and video will be captured. You will be asked to sign an image release form.
- Camping will be permitted at a near by property. There is a lot of room, but there is a limit to how many tents and people can be accommodated. If you are interested in camping, or if you are looking for possible people to share lodging in a hotel with, please email president@alohaarborist.com, so we can get you hooked up.
- Vacation Rentals are illegal on Oahu. Closest lodging options will be in Waikiki.

The workshop features Tiana Bolson, Wildlife Biologist, Seabird/Offshore Islets Section, from Division of Forestry and Wildlife DLNR. She will be discussing:
- State and Federal regulations protecting these birds
- How to spot breeding sites in a tree
- Best Management Practices for pruning trees with breeding sites
- Participants will practice spotting breeding sites in trees.
The class size is limited to 10 people each session. Everyone will be required to wear masks and social distance during the training. There will be a videographer filming the sessions, so all participants will be required to sign a photo release at registration.
Why should our workers attend this training?
- Violations of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (Federal) can result in fines of up to $15,000 per incident
- Violations of State of Hawaii law regarding threatened species can result in fines of $250 or more and/or up to 1-year of imprisonment for the violator(s)
- Your company could end up with negative publicity from media coverage if your workers violate regulations (ending up in the newspaper and/or on the evening news)
- Because it’s the right thing to do!

LESSONS ABOUT • Tree Care Near Manu-o-Kū Breeding Sites
AAA is wrapping up the Kaulunani project to develop Guidelines for Tree Care Near Manu-o-Kū Breeding Sites, but it feels like a beginning. The Guidelines are completed and available for downloading. Also thanks to this project, AAA and its project partners have learned some lessons and have plans for the future. We look forward to getting the guidelines out to the arboriculture and urban forestry community, and also to help the public and tree care customers see that the tree professionals who have been trained can get their work done and protect manu-o-Kū at the same time. Professionals should first get training before working near manu-o-Kū – Now that there is a consensus as to what best practices are, the project partners are offering training for the broader arboriculture community and other interested parties. You can also see who has already taken the class.
Getting and giving help to find manu-o-Kū breeding sites in trees – This is an important step for tree care professionals, and requires practice and patience. Fortunately, we have help from the Hui Manu-o-Kū – and hopefully we can help them in return. There’s online data – oh and did we mention we’d like you to upload your own data on previously unknown breeding sites?
It’s possible to work on a tree while there is breeding, but only if you have the training and can implement the best practices – See the Guidelines, and sign up to learn about surveying for manu-o-Kū, behavior-defined buffer zones, emergency procedures, and other components of working in the vicinity of chicks and incubating adults.
Manu-o-Kū decided to make some of Oʻahu’s busiest areas their home. We’re grateful, and now we have resources that empower the tree care community to get the job while taking care of these special creatures. For questions and to sign up for training, please contact AAA at info@alohaarborist.com.

Experts from the US Fish and Wildlife Service, Hui Manu-o-Kū, and DLNR’s Division of Forestry and Wildlife met yesterday with a group of tree companies and others on the UH Manoa campus, where Manu-o-Kū chicks were could be seen perching in the kukui trees, to learn new professional protocols for work near breeding sites of manu-o-Kū, or White Terns.
Manu-o-Kū (Gygis alba), is one of the few protected native bird species to inhabit urban areas on Oahu. Manu-o-Kū was named Honolulu’s official bird in 2007, and there are now nearly 1,400 nesting sites in nearly 1,000 trees in the densest parts of Oahu. Harming adults, chicks or eggs can result in tree owners or tree workers running afoul of wildlife agencies. However, at yesterday’s meeting the atmosphere was one of cooperation as everyone discussed how to get tree work done and protect the manu-o-Kū.
Keith Swindle and Rich Downs, from the US FWS and the Hui respectively, led the group in a review of manu-o-Kū biology, how to survey for breeding activity, how to determine when a situation is a real emergency and how to respond, and routine tree work around breeding sites. In the past, in part due to gaps in knowledge about the bird’s biology, experts promoted a “do not prune” approach whenever there was breeding activity. With better data and expert observation, experts are now backing improved tree pruning approaches. Yesterday, Swindle instructed attendees on details of how to prune and carry out tree care cautiously and responsibly. Attendees came away understanding that, with training and use of professional best practices, it is possible to carry out tree care around manu-o-Kū breeding sites.
During the event, Downs highlighted an incident that occurred that very morning when a tree had been knocked down and a chick fell to the pavement. The City & County crew who were present to clean up had been told that no White Terns could be touched, and they were very hesitant to pick up the chick and put it in a safe place. This training aimed to dispel this and other old practices, and to emphasize that wildlife protectors, tree owners and tree workers have mutual interests and can help each other reach their goals.
Aloha Arborist Association is grateful to the Kaulunani Urban & Community Forestry Program for funding this project, and to the City & County of Honolulu Division of Urban Forestry and other project partners for helping make strides in promoting improved tree care practices around manu-o-Kū.
