I think what struck me most writing it was just how remarkable it is that Terry’s story has not only endured, but continues to feel so present for new generations. I agree that belonging and well-being have to be at the heart of whatever we call innovation, without them, so much else becomes difficult. I also love your point about curiosity; it may be one of the most important qualities we can continue to nurture in our schools. Wishing you all the best in this next chapter.

Today is the first time in 33 years that I am not going to school, as I retired in July. I started my morning reading news and articles, including yours. In 2008, I defended my doctoral thesis at SFU, a study later published in a peer‑reviewed journal. My research focused on how investigating and understanding individual teachers’ concerns during the diffusion of an innovation can help identify their needs and support meaningful change. In my work, the innovation was the integration of technology.
After 33 years in public education, as a classroom teacher, faculty associate in a teacher education program, and school principal, I have come to believe that the most important innovation is creating safe school environments where everyone feels they belong. In our changing world, with a stronger emphasis on inclusion, if a child, staff member, or family does not feel a sense of belonging and well‑being, learning and growth simply do not happen. As educators, we need to cultivate genuine curiosity about each other and about what is happening around us — that is essential to our roles. This remains an ongoing innovation we must continually nurture, because the world will not stop turning.

Thanks Sue. I love that memory of the flip charts and my phone-as-office! I also fondly remember protecting your overhead projector, which I believe was the final one in the district 🙂 It feels like a pretty good snapshot of exactly what this post is about: different tools, different approaches, but always the same fundamental question of how we make learning better for kids and adults.

I hope those wee people in your life had a wonderful first day of K. And I have to say, I’m not entirely convinced you’ve ever really left the system, your thinking and influence are still very much part of it!

A brilliant post Chris! I am recalling when you began your time in West Van, the juxtaposition between my flip charts and ‘making thinking visible’ posted around a meeting room, versus your use of your phone as your office!
Your words in this blog link profoundly with a recent conversation with some of my learning colleagues on the Learning Forward BC Board. What to keep and what to let go of! How do we know that what each of us does each day impact the learning experience of each child – ALL – including the adults?
As I ponder several wee persons in my life beginning K today, I wish for them a wonderfully positive experience. Your pearls of wisdom almost make me with I was still working in the sytem!
