Dear Friends,

I am writing to share some very major and exciting news regarding the Believe In Tomorrow Children’s House at Johns Hopkins.

Over the past year, we have been in discussions with the Johns Hopkins University regarding their interest in acquiring the land that the Children’s House sits on. While we own the building, the land is owned by Johns Hopkins, and we have occupied the property through a long-term lease. The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health is expanding and has plans to build a major academic complex on the property that we occupy and the surrounding parking lots. Several weeks ago, we signed an agreement that will allow JHU to acquire the property, and in return, JHU will help to fund the construction of a major new Believe In Tomorrow Children’s House at Johns Hopkins that will be located close to the hospital. The agreement will allow us to reimagine the concept of pediatric hospital housing and build a truly unique world-class facility that will meet the needs of critically ill children and their families for many years to come. And most importantly, Believe In Tomorrow will own both the building and the land.

So what does this mean for our pediatric hospital housing mission in the near future? After this year’s holiday season, the Children’s House will no longer accept families into the McElderry Street location. Under the terms of our agreement, we will maintain a moderate number of rooms for families to stay at the Residence Inn by Marriott Johns Hopkins Medical Campus location, where we will continue to serve families being treated at the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center until our new building is constructed. We will spend the months of January and February unwinding our operations at the Children’s House McElderry Street location, and at the end of February, we will vacate the building. Sometime in March or April of next year, the building will be demolished. Most of our Children’s House staff will be moving to our Catonsville office where they will participate in the planning and opening of our new facility that is expected to be completed in the next three years.

Our goal is to make the new Believe In Tomorrow Children’s House at Johns Hopkins the best pediatric residential facility of its kind in the world. Current plans call for a building that will house between 18 to 20 families at a time, and utilize the latest technologies to meet the parental and medical needs of today. A preview of some planned amenities include: onsite evening and overnight security provided by Johns Hopkins; onsite parking; soundproof rooms with coffee and tea maker; high speed internet; cable television; a rooftop terrace; fitness and meditation spaces; communal dining, play and recreation areas and a business center. The planned location for the new facility is approximately two blocks from the front of the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center. For the past nine months, we have been working with JHU to secure the acquisition of the property, and we hope to be able to announce the exact location in the very near future.

The Children’s House at Johns Hopkins has provided extraordinary service to thousands of families over the past 30 years. During that time, thanks to you and our many donors and volunteers like you, the Children’s House has provided over 600,000 overnight accommodations to some of the most fragile pediatric patients being treated at the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center. Although that is an incredible accomplishment that we can all be very proud of, I think that some of our most important work lies ahead of us. In the days and months ahead, we will be embarking on a new journey of hope, kindness, and healing that will continue on for the next 30 years and beyond. It is a mission of love that I hope you will continue to be a part of.

As further information becomes available, we will keep you informed of the progress, and of ways that you can be a part of this new chapter in the life of the Believe In Tomorrow Children’s House at Johns Hopkins. Together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of many families and the world we live in. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions, concerns, or thoughts that you may have in relation to this news. I know this may be very unexpected news to you. It certainly was unexpected when we learned of the JHU plans a little over a year ago. Although this has created some significant challenges, it has also created a very unique opportunity to ensure the success of our Believe In Tomorrow mission at Johns Hopkins and to reimagine and redefine the concept of pediatric hospital housing. It certainly reflects the phrase, “When one door closes, another opens.”

OCEAN CITY, MD. – Kiwanis Club of Greater Ocean Pines President Bob Wolfing presents a $1,000 check to The Children’s House By The Sea Programs Director Mary Decker Brown after she was the guest speaker at the weekly meeting on August 9, 2023. Mary began her position in 2022 and has been with Believe In Tomorrow Children’s Foundation for six years, after working at the Baltimore Sun newspaper. The Foundation was created in 1986 to provide help for critically ill children. The Children’s House By The Sea not only helps the children, but provides all-expenses paid respite vacations for the immediate family for a week in Ocean City, MD. The current 3 locations can house 6 families every week providing the opportunity to relax, renew and make lasting memories. The Kiwanis Club supports their efforts with a contribution every year and some members volunteer to help do some maintenance or help on other needs.

BALTIMORE, MD. – An iconic Baltimore baker’s creations to be on offer at the new Great Wolf Lodge water park in Cecil County will support a good cause.

Children of all ages are eagerly awaiting the park’s June 29 opening in Perryville.

Duff Goldman, owner of Charm City Cakes and star of the hit show “Ace of Cakes,” is making his latest cupcake creations as part of a collaboration with the soon-to-be-open park.

“We met with Duff and his team to really create these great, limited edition Great Wolf Lodge cupcakes that are going to feature our Great Wolf Lodge characters,” Nadine Miracle, general manager of Great Wolf Lodge Maryland, told 11 News.

“We have four different flavors: There’s vanilla, there’s a confetti, a chocolate and there’s a chocolate with brown-butter buttercream. Really good,” Goldman told 11 News.

The cupcakes will be available at the lodge for a limited time from the grand opening through the remainder of the summer.

“We’re really looking forward to it. My daughter is 2, and my wife loves water parks. I cannot wait,” Goldman told 11 News.

The Duff-designed desserts are special in another way, as 100% of the sales proceeds will go to the Believe In Tomorrow Children’s House at Johns Hopkins.

“We provide accommodations to 15 families each and every night, in a communal setting to provide the comfort and support they need in the most stressful time in their lives. The Children’s House is open seven days a week, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Critical illness does not take a vacation,” Maryanne Davis, CEO of Believe In Tomorrow Children’s Foundation, told 11 News.

“I’m really excited that Great Wolf Lodge has partnered with The Children’s House. It’s an incredible organization that does really, really good work, and just the fact that Great Wolf Lodge is really putting their money where their mouth is and supporting something in the Baltimore community, as a Baltimorean, for me, I’m like, welcome, come on in,” Goldman told 11 News.

OCEAN CITY, Md.- Maryland First Lady Yumi Hogan visited the Children’s House By The Sea Monday afternoon. The organization provides resources to critically ill children and families while giving them a week’s stay at the beach to enjoy some activities.

First Lady Hogan has been visiting this pediatric facility for years and engages in projects with the children. Monday’s visit she got to witness a $20,000 check go to the organization to help build a new facility, which will ultimately expand their reach of helping more children.

“Believe In Tomorrow does really wonderful things, helping children, families who can’t afford to come to the beach, but also not only see the water, but they meet other children,” First Lady Yumi Hogan said.

“The First Lady of Maryland is such a wonderful supporter of children everywhere, really, but to the Believe In the Tomorrow children she’s been kind of been a symbol of hope I believe,” Brian Morrison, Founder and CEO of Believe In Tomorrow, said.

The group “Contractors for A Cause” donated the money to the Children’s House By The Sea. They hope to have the facility open in 2023, which can be found behind their OC facility.

Believe In Tomorrow Children’s House by the Sea provides services to critically ill children and families letting them stay a week at the beach while having some fun. They just bought another property on 65th street that neighbors their House by the Sea.

We’re told this will make the Believe in Tomorrow respite program in OC the largest pediatric respite program in the US. The CEO and Founder of the foundation said they wanted to enlarge their footprint because of the number of families who want this opportunity.

“It’s incredibly needed because we have a waiting list through most parts of the year, we have families that come in from about a 15 to a 20 state area, all of these families have critically ill children, they are being treated for cancer and other life threatening illnesses and they are coming here to the beach to renew their energies mentally and physically to be together with other families who are experiencing the same thing,” Brian Morrison, CEO and Founder, said.

The new space will have outdoor recreational areas.

They will be starting renovations soon with hopes to be open by next summer.

OCEAN CITY, Md.- Unity and encouragement; those were the main messages that were spread Monday afternoon when Maryland’s First Lady Yumi Hogan visited the Believe In Tomorrow Children’s House in Ocean City.

“I hope people help this program any children’s program, you know we need the community’s help,” Yumi Hogan said.

“Yumi is a wonderful advocate for believe in tomorrow and our mission to help children with cancer, and it’s really about celebrating life and hope and bring everyone together at the beach,” Brian Morrison, the founder of Believe In Tomorrow Children’s House By The Sea, said.

The foundation provides services to critically ill children and families,. letting them stay a week at the beach to help them get their minds off of what they are going through.

First Lady Hogan said places like this one lets families know they have support.

“It’s very, very important they have to go through this, their family, their family is suffering with them, not them themselves, alone so children also they come and see all their friends they do, they forget about the moment,” Yumi Hogan said.

She said coming together during these uncertain times is crucial and is heartwarming.

“Especially, they are very depressed, you know they couldn’t see friends, they couldn’t go out so today’s the first time they opened and they have happy faces,” Yumi Hogan said.

And for the families that met Maryland’s First Lady they said she also had an impact on them and their visit.

“When they saw her they were very impressed, just with her, she wanted to be personal with everybody and she really was,” Jesse Davidson, a parent said.

“It just shows shes a really caring person and just to hear that she would be praying for our us and individually praying for the kids really touched my heart quite a bit,” Joseph Arouni, a parent said.

OCEAN CITY – The Robert I. Schattner Foundation has provided the Believe In Tomorrow Children’s House By The Sea with a $10,000 matching grant to promote “growth through giving” throughout the month of December. All new donors who contribute to the Believe In Tomorrow Children’s House By The Sea’s pediatric respite program, will have their contributions doubled by this generous grant.

“This is a wonderful growth opportunity that will have a direct and very positive impact on the families that we serve here in Ocean City,” said Believe In Tomorrow’s Founder, Brian Morrison.

The matching grant will begin on Dec. 1 and continue through the month of December until the full amount of the grant is utilized. All funds raised will go directly to Believe In Tomorrow’s Ocean City respite program.

This grant was made possible through the direction of Sidney Bresler, the president and chairman of the Robert I. Schattner Foundation, who read an article about the Believe In Tomorrow Children’s House By The Sea last summer. Bresler, a Bethesda, Md. resident who owns a home in Ocean City, recently toured the Children’s House By The Sea with his wife Phyllis.

“We are honored to help the many families who stay at the Believe In Tomorrow Foundation’s Ocean City respite housing find relief, particularly during these very difficult times with the added stress of COVID-19,” said Mr. Bresler. “Our goal at the Robert I. Schattner Foundation is to make grants where they will do the most good, and where our gifts will make a difference in the quality of people’s lives.”

Schattner was a renowned dentist who used his knowledge of chemistry to launch a highly successful career as a national-level entrepreneur. He was the inventor of Chloraseptic and Sporicidin and used his success with these products to fund the foundation and its charitable endeavors. He served on many corporate boards and for 15 years served on the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine Board of Overseers. The foundation was founded in 1992. Although Schattner passed away in 2017, his legacy of giving lives on through.

The Believe In Tomorrow Children’s Foundation is a national leader in the area of pediatric respite and hospital housing. Believe In Tomorrow’s flagship beach respite location is on 66^th Street in Ocean City across from the beachfront Holiday Inn.
