“I’m going to clean the bathrooms more regularly.”

“I’m going to force myself to run three miles every day.”

“I’m going to eat more celery and less chocolate.”

Do your New Year’s resolutions feel more like punishment than positivity? If so, resolve to make 2024 the year you set some goals you’ll look forward to keeping! If you need a little inspiration to get started, consider the following:

Tips for Finding Positivity in Caregiving

Care for yourself. You spend so much time taking care of others. Set time aside each day to do something kind, just for you. This might be as simple as a bubble bath before bed, a quick run to your favorite coffee shop, or designated time each day to curl up under a cozy quilt and read.

Strive to find the bright side. There are challenges and difficulties with caring for an older family member. Yet there are also a lot of positives to focus on instead. Rather than fret about the bad weather that changed your plans, settle in to watch some home movies and reminisce over a cup of comforting cocoa.

Let go of what you cannot control. So much of the time we spend worrying is the result of things that are beyond our control. Give yourself permission to step back and remind yourself that you are human, and there will be situations you can’t resolve and problems you can’t fix.

Pay attention to your inner dialogue. Nip any self-directed words of negativity in the bud. If you find you’re silently berating yourself for losing your patience, stop and remind yourself that you’re a loving, selfless, and dedicated caregiver for the person you love. Because of you, they are able to continue living at home and enjoy the best possible quality of life. Think about how you would encourage a friend in your shoes, and turn that encouragement inward.

Accept help. Let this be the year that you realize caring for someone you love is a job that’s much more effective when shared. Let friends and family know that you’d like some support, and allow them to step in to help with laundry, meals, housework, running errands—whatever would alleviate stress and allow you to attain a healthier life balance.

At At-Home Care Company, we are here to help make these and any other New Year’s resolutions a reality! Our caregivers are experienced and trained in a wide variety of care needs, and can partner with you to:

Offer friendly companionship for an older family member, including engaging conversations, puzzles, games, hobbies, exercise, and more

Pick up groceries and run any other errands as needed

Help with light housekeeping and laundry

And much more

Coughing. Difficulty breathing. Wheezing. If you’re taking care of a family member with COPD, you know these symptoms all too well. The aim of COPD caregivers is to help the person live their highest possible quality of life, but it’s not easy. Despite the fact that there is presently no cure available for COPD, it is treatable, and there are actions you can take as a family caregiver to help.

How Can COPD Caregivers Help Loved Ones Manage COPD?

There are several key aspects to living a better life with COPD:

Improve the diet.

A balanced and healthy diet provides someone with COPD with the extra calories and energy they need to prevent and recover from chest infections and to ease breathing. Specifically, encourage a diet high in fresh vegetables and fruits, seeds, and nuts with limited processed foods and red meats. It is particularly important to reduce salt intake, as salt causes water retention that makes it harder to breathe. It is also helpful to make certain the day starts with a breakfast that is full of nutrients. This is because fatigue may prevent someone with COPD from getting enough calories, and frequently the person will have the most energy first thing in the morning. The individual should, however, stay clear of that morning cup of coffee, as caffeine can react negatively to COPD medications and lead to feelings of restlessness or nervousness.

Modify the house.

Take a walk through the person’s home, paying special attention first to ventilation and air quality. Windows should be open if possible to improve ventilation, but closed when the quality of air outside is poor, or when conditions are dusty. Air filtration systems and exhaust fans can also help. Make sure the humidity level is balanced. The air shouldn’t be too dry or too humid, each of which can attract irritants. Next, be sure there are no indoor pollutants, for example, fireplace or cigarette smoke, hair spray, and perfume. Dispose of clutter, which collects dust. The home should always be kept as clean as possible, using gentle cleaning products without harsh chemicals or strong scents, and changing bed linens regularly to eliminate dust mites.

Encourage exercise.

Following a regular exercise routine will help an individual with COPD build muscle strength and endurance, which can help them breathe easier. Upper body exercises are important for better breathing and to make it easier to remain independent and perform daily activities. Lower body exercises, such as walking on a treadmill or climbing stairs, have also been shown to help those with COPD. Physical activity can be split up into small chunks. As little as a few minutes of activity several times per day is helpful. Don’t forget to include breathing exercises, such as pursed lip breathing and diaphragmatic breathing, to enhance respiratory strength. Always check with the physician prior to starting or changing any fitness program, but a good rule of thumb for breathing exercises includes five to ten minutes, three to four times each day.

Bring in help.

The important thing to remember is you don’t have to go it alone! An in-home caregiver from At-Home Care Company can help in a variety of ways to improve life for someone with COPD. Our caregivers are thoroughly trained and experienced in a wide array of personalized care services, such as:

Grocery shopping and running errands

Providing motivation to exercise, take walks together, etc.

Cheerful companionship to brighten each day

Transportation and accompaniment to medical appointments and outings

Personal care assistance

And more

Email or call us at 515-292-2650 for more information regarding our home care services in Story City, Boone, Ames, and the surrounding areas.

Aging is accompanied by a host of common changes. Shifts in eating and sleeping habits, memory, and interests in certain activities are oftentimes linked to the natural process of growing older. Yet, these very changes can sometimes be indicative of a frequently overlooked and untreated condition in older adults: anxiety disorders.

What Other Signs Could Point to Anxiety in Older Adults?

Along with the red flags noted above, an older adult with anxiety may experience:

Nightmares

Excessive sweating

Trembling

A racing heart

The need for repetition in certain activities, such as handwashing

Nausea

Obsessive thinking

Extreme overreactions

And more

What Causes Anxiety in Older Adults?

There are a number of contributing factors for anxiety in older adults, including:

A chronic health condition

Loss of a loved one

Side effects from medications

Challenges with mobility

Feeling as if they have lost their freedom

Trauma from their past

And more

What Are the Most Common Types of Anxiety Disorders?

In many instances, the doctor will diagnose an individual with generalized anxiety disorder, which covers a broad array of types of anxiety. In addition, there are three specific anxiety disorders that could be diagnosed:

Social anxiety disorder: Social anxiety disorder occurs when the person experiences extreme nervousness or self-consciousness in social situations. This can be debilitating, leading the individual to avoid socializing altogether, something that is harmful for both their physical and emotional wellbeing.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder: Also known as OCD, this condition causes the individual to go through specific rituals, often repeatedly, to manage unwanted thoughts or compulsions. These behaviors, such as washing hands over and over again or checking to make sure the door is locked multiple times, provide a feeling of control in an otherwise uncontrollable situation.

Phobias: Phobias are fears of a very specific object or situation. The individual may, for instance, feel particularly fearful of dental or doctor visits, insects, thunderstorms, the dark, being alone, etc.

How Can You Help an Older Adult With Anxiety?

The good news is there are successful treatment options available for individuals with anxiety, ranging from medications to counseling to changes in lifestyle. To begin with, schedule an appointment with the physician for a diagnosis and recommendations. Additionally, you can:

Speak with the person frequently, allowing them to share their thoughts and feelings. Simply listening without judgment will help instill a feeling of calm and self-worth in your loved one.

Encourage better sleeping habits if needed. A recent research study conducted by the University of California, Berkeley, revealed that insufficient sleep can elevate anxiety up to 30%.

Recommend steering clear of nicotine, alcohol, caffeine, and other stimulants, all of which can heighten anxiety.

Ready or not, the holiday season has arrived! As you get ready for family get-togethers, there’s something more to consider besides which gifts to buy, what dishes to prepare, and how far off your diet you are willing to stray. When visiting elderly loved ones during the holiday season, it’s common to notice changes if you haven’t seen them in person for some time. Our experts share the warning signs that may indicate a need to consider home care.

What Changes Should I Look for When Visiting Elderly Loved Ones During the Holiday Season?

Changes such as these could be an indication that safety may be compromised:

Missed medications. If the person uses a pill box, check to be sure medications have been taken up to the current time. You might also want to have a look at prescription pill bottles for dosage details, and watch to see if the individual is taking the correct amounts at the right times during your visit.

Decline in personal hygiene. Take note if the person has always been meticulously dressed with not a hair out of place, but now appears disheveled or unclean. A decline in daily hygiene such as showering, combing hair, brushing teeth, and wearing clean clothes may indicate health issues such as depression, dementia, or physical impairment.

Lost weight. The individual may seem to have a hearty appetite during holiday meals, and may otherwise appear to be healthy, but obvious weight loss without trying can signal that something is wrong. A person who is losing weight may have trouble preparing meals, have a diminished sense of taste or smell, or may even have a serious underlying condition, such as cancer.

The condition of the house. Any major changes in the ways the house is maintained can offer a clue into the individual’s wellness. For example, burn marks on pots could mean the individual is forgetting about food cooking on the stove. A decline in housekeeping may indicate early dementia or other problems. Check to make sure the lights are working, the thermostat is set to a comfortable temperature, the bathrooms are clean, and there is no clutter blocking pathways, either indoors or out.

Mobility changes. Does the individual seem unsteady on their feet? Do you see any bruises or other injuries that may indicate a fall? Pay attention as well to how they get up out of a chair and sit back down. Falls occur in as many as one out of four older adults, and may lead to serious injury.

I’m Observing Some Red Flags in Someone I Love. Now What?

In the event that you detect these or other concerning signs, the initial step is to schedule a consultation with the person’s physician. You might be inclined to wait until after the holidays so as not to disturb the family festivities, but the sooner your concerns are addressed, the better.

One great way to help a loved one maintain independent living at home while remaining safe is by partnering with At-Home Care Company for customized in-home care services. We help adults continue to live safely in the homes they love for a lifetime.

The people we serve stay in control of their lives and daily decisions, while our trained, experienced caregivers provide just the right level of support through services such as:

Providing transportation and accompaniment to medical appointments and outings

Assisting with walking and transfers

Grocery shopping

Assisting with laundry and light housekeeping

Offering companionship to alleviate loneliness, boredom, and isolation

And much more

Our award-winning in-home care services are available in Huxley, Story City, Boone, and surrounding areas. Contact us online or call us at 515-292-2650 for more information on how we can help.

November is Diabetes Awareness Month, and with more than 130 million Americans diagnosed with the disease, it is likely you know someone or perhaps even are part of this group. Whether you’re new to caring for someone with diabetes or a seasoned veteran, there’s always something new to learn to improve life with diabetes.

These guidelines are easy to implement and will make a world of difference in keeping diabetes in check.

What Steps Can You Take to Improve Life With Diabetes?

Manage meds. A pill organizer or medication reminder services from an At-Home Care Company caregiver can help ensure meds are taken just as prescribed. Remember to stay on top of ordering prescription refills before running too low. Keep a list of all medications being taken, including the dosages and when each is taken. It is important to share this information with all of the person’s specialists and doctors, to avoid any contraindications from new or changed prescriptions.

Stay active. Exercise is another key element of keeping blood sugar levels regulated. Talk with the doctor for a recommended exercise program, and be sure the person exercises within one hour or so after eating, so blood sugar levels are not too low. If attending a fitness class outside of the home, be sure to bring along water, glucose tablets, and snacks that are rich in carbs in the event of an emergency.

Relieve stress. Elevated stress can result in elevated blood sugar levels. When caring for a loved one with diabetes, incorporate plenty of calming activities throughout each day: reading, taking a warm bath, participating in enjoyable hobbies and pastimes, listening to favorite music, etc.

Get a medical ID bracelet. Wearing a bracelet or necklace that indicates the person has diabetes will ensure the right level of attention immediately in the event of an emergency.

Partner with a professional. Caring for someone with diabetes is a complex undertaking. A caregiver from At-Home Care Company will help ensure all of a person’s care needs are met at all times, ensuring you are able to take the breaks from care that you need for your own health and wellness.

Our care professionals are fully trained and experienced in caring for people who have diabetes, through services such as:

If you have ever felt unrecognized and underappreciated in your role as family caregiver, this month is for you! November is National Family Caregivers Month, an occasion to applaud the tireless work and dedication you invest in making sure a loved one’s life is the best it can be.

While It’s Not Always Easy, You Are Making a Difference

Take the opportunity to think about what a day in the life of family caregiving involves. Even though self-care for family caregivers is important, your first thoughts are never for yourself, but for the overall health of someone you love. Because of you, an older family member:

Has a companion to brighten each day through conversations, outings, and fun activities

Can enjoy healthy meals

Obtains the help and support needed to accomplish the daily tasks of living that may have become challenging to take care of on their own

Never has to be worried about facing the challenges of aging alone

And so much more

Caregiving is a rewarding but challenging endeavor, and we salute you for your selfless work.

You’re in Good Company

As reported in an AARP study, unpaid family caregiving amounts to more than $600 billion in care. This mind-blowing statistic equates to 38 million family caregivers who care for a loved one an average of 18 hours per week. To put that into perspective, this far surpasses the $433 billion spent annually in out-of-pocket healthcare costs by everyone in the United States.

But You Cannot Do It All Alone

Family caregivers often feel as though there isn’t anyone who knows the older loved one better than they do, and therefore no one can provide the same level of care. Although the first part of this may very well be true, the reality is that trying to meet all of a loved one’s care needs independently isn’t healthy for either the care receiver or the caregiver.

In order to provide the best care for a loved one, it’s critical to prioritize self-care for family caregivers. Feeling burned out and worn down leads to lower patience levels, less attention to detail, and increased frustration and stress—a recipe for a number of negative effects, including:

Relationship problems with other family members and friends who also need your time and attention

Self-medication through unhealthy means

An increased risk of injury to the senior from a medication mishap, fall, or other accident

Sleeping problems

Resentment, anger, and other complicated emotions

Caregiver depression and other serious health conditions

And much more

The Solution

The very best way you can celebrate National Family Caregivers Month is by acknowledging the need for support to allow yourself to take time to care for yourself. At-Home Care Company’s respite care services are the perfect way to obtain a healthy life balance while ensuring the high quality care a loved one deserves.

October may be the season for spookiness, but none of Halloween’s haunts holds a candle to the frightening reality of the latest scams targeting seniors. Older adults have long been the target of scammers, who prey on their perceived vulnerability and loneliness. Yet technology is taking their efforts to a completely new level, making it difficult for even the savviest individual to recognize their deception.

AI and The Grandparent Scam

The grandparent scam has been around for decades. An older adult would receive a call from someone claiming to be a relative demanding immediate financial help for an emergency they were facing. The voice, manner of speaking, and phone number could often give away the caller’s malintent.

Enter AI. Scammers are now able to use technology to clone a person’s voice, using just a snippet of audio pulled from social media such as TikTok or Instagram. The cloning software allows the individual to type whatever text they want the voice to say, and the result is a startlingly authentic replica of the person’s actual voice.

To further compound the difficulty with detecting the scam, calls can now seem to originate from any number the scammer selects.

So a grandparent answers the telephone, recognizes the phone number as that of his grandchild, and hears her frantic voice urgently requesting money to help her in an emergency. How should such a situation be handled?

Tips to Thwart Scams Targeting Seniors

Following these steps can help protect the older adults you love from AI scams:

Talk about it. Explain the details surrounding the newest AI scams to your older family members so they are aware of what to anticipate. Make sure everyone realizes that simply because caller ID shows a familiar telephone number, it does not mean the call is actually from that number. This applies to personal contacts as well as businesses.

Agree on a family password. Establish a word that everybody in your family can quickly remember, but which would be hard for someone outside of your circle to guess. If an individual calls claiming to be a family member in crisis, ask for the secret code word.

Call back. In a real emergency, a family member may not remember the code word. As another method to verify the caller’s identity, always hang up the phone and call the person right back.

Be cautious about clicking. Scammers may also send an email that appears to be from a genuine source, such as a retail business or bank the person uses regularly. These emails are exceedingly difficult to differentiate from authentic emails from an organization. A good practice is to never click on an emailed link, but to go directly to an organization’s website through a browser.

Report All Scams Immediately

In the event that you or someone you love happens to be targeted by any type of scam, contact the police along with the Federal Trade Commission.

Caring for your aging parents is a remarkably rewarding act of love. As you think about the care they provided for you when you were growing up, you now are able to reciprocate. It allows you to take your relationship with your parents to a whole new level.

Having said that, providing care for family members isn’t always a bed of roses. It is important to be aware of the pitfalls you may experience and to know how to manage them to protect your own health and wellbeing. Some of the typical challenges faced by family caregivers include:

Lack of Sleep

Interrupted sleep can arise from an older adult whose circadian clock has shifted, causing them to waken more often during the night. It can be the result of stress and worry. If dementia is a factor, sundowning and wandering can cause you to stay on alert. Ample sleep is vital to your ability to offer the best care for your parents, as well as for your own emotional and physical wellness.

Lack of Privacy

Your physical and emotional privacy can both be compromised if you are sharing living space along with your parents. This is particularly true if one or both of your parents have dementia, which could cause them to feel lost or fearful when you step out of the room. Similarly, your parents may struggle to maintain privacy while in your care.

Lack of Support

You might feel as though the lion’s share of caregiving falls on your shoulders. This can cause you to assume you are solely responsible for your parents’ care, which is not just overwhelming, but can cause hurt feelings and frustration in other relationships. No one person can effectively care for another on their own. Trying to achieve this places you at an increased risk for depression, burnout, and other serious health conditions, and also impacts the level of care your parents receive.

How Can You Overcome the Common Challenges Faced By Family Caregivers?

Fortunately, there is one simple solution to all of these concerns. At Home Care Company’s in-home caregivers are available to partner with you to ensure the best care for your parents and a healthier life balance for you. Taking time away from caregiving isn’t just a smart idea; it is essential.

Our respite care services allow you to take necessary regular breaks from caregiving for your own self-care, while enriching the lives of your parents. We provide additional opportunities for socialization and engagement in enjoyable activities combined with the necessary support to promote safety and comfort – so you can have peace of mind knowing your parents are in the best of hands while you’re away.

Being an only child has its perks. During childhood, you never had to experience sibling rivalry or fights, and you had the benefit of getting all the attention and love of your parents. As an adult with no siblings, however, you may now find that it’s your turn to provide all the care and attention your parents need.

There are certainly advantages to caregiving as an only child as well. You can make all the essential decisions without having to consult with siblings. You also don’t have to worry about disagreements and heightened emotions that often arise among siblings due to the stress of caring for older parents.

The disadvantage, obviously, is that it’s an enormous responsibility to provide care for your parents all on your own. These pointers can help.

Watch for signs. Keep an eye on your parents’ ability to handle everyday activities of living independently. Are they paying bills and balancing the checkbook? Is the home being cared for and kept clean? Are they maintaining personal hygiene? Are there any red flags of dangers such as cluttered rooms that could trigger a fall, scorch marks on pans that could indicate unattended cooking, etc.?

Bring in reinforcements. If you suspect your parents may require some help in the home, it’s a good idea to first schedule a consultation with the doctor to go over your concerns. A trusted professional can often have more of an influence on older adults and the need for intervention to ensure safety.

Prepare early. The need for help at home as your parents grow older is highly likely. So even if they are active and healthy now, it’s a smart idea to begin to formulate a plan for their future care needs. Sit down with your parents and have an open and honest talk about their wishes. This discussion should include an assessment of finances and confirmation that all important paperwork is in place: power of attorney, healthcare directive, will, etc.

Once the need for support at home has been established, you’ll want to build a good network of support. Caring for aging parents is not something that should be undertaken solo. This can quickly result in depression, caregiver burnout, and a host of other health complications.

How In-Home Care Can Help

Suffering a stroke is only the first step in a series of challenges. The resulting effects from a stroke can linger long-term. In fact, the National Institute on Aging lists stroke as the leading cause of disability in older adults in the U.S.

As with any other serious medical condition, prevention is essential.

Stroke Prevention Tips

The good news is that there are many proactive strategies that can help to prevent a stroke, including:

Managing diabetes. Diabetes, when not properly managed, can harm blood vessels and narrow arteries, which can result in a stroke.

Routinely exercising. The doctor can offer specific recommendations and guidelines on the best workout program for the older adult.

Following a healthy diet plan. Incorporate foods that are low in cholesterol and fat, including plenty of vegetables and fruit, into each meal.

Quitting—or never starting—smoking. Smoking dramatically increases the risk of a stroke.

Watching blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Hypertension and high cholesterol levels can lead to cardiovascular disease and/or stroke.

These changes in lifestyle can go a long way towards minimizing the possibility of a stroke, and can also help prevent a second stroke if the person has already experienced one.

What Are the Signs of a Stroke?

If, in spite of taking the steps outlined above, a person does have a stroke, it’s important to know the signs and to act right away. Time is of the essence, and getting immediate medical care can be lifesaving.

Signs of a stroke include:

Sudden dizziness, loss of balance and coordination, or trouble walking

Sudden vision problems

Drowsiness

Sudden weakness or numbness on one side of the body, especially in the arm, leg, or face

Difficulty talking

Confusion

Nausea/vomiting

A severe headache that develops for no known reason

What Will the Stroke Recovery Process Involve?

Stroke recovery starts with rehabilitation. This may include physical therapy, occupational therapy, and/or speech therapy, depending on how the person has been impacted.

A physical therapist can help the person recover basic skills such as walking, sitting, standing, and transitional activities.

An occupational therapist helps retrain individuals in activities of daily living that may have been compromised, such as preparing meals, getting dressed, eating, drinking, taking a shower, etc.

A speech therapist supports the recovery of speaking as well as understanding what others are saying.

The goal of these rehabilitative therapies is to help the person boost independence and self-sufficiency.

The Role of Home Care

A home care agency, like At-Home Care Company, is a fundamental element of both helping a person prevent a stroke and assisting with a stroke survivor’s recovery. Our services are highly customized to each individual’s needs, and can include:

Running errands, such as picking up groceries and prescriptions

Motivating the individual to stick to a doctor-approved exercise program

Transportation and accompaniment to medical appointments and any other desired outing

Providing medication reminders
