During the NFL’s investigation they talked to Ray Rice and his wife, felt like they had the whole story, and then proceeded to trot them out to the media as a united front. It was supposed to be an example of how to quietly handle domestic violence between two adults…. and it almost worked. That was until the emergence of the hotel video which left the American public horrified.

It’s amazing how the perception changed after watching the abuse play out digitally. No longer was it left to the imagination. However, I’m not sure you need much imagination to understand what the result would be of a highly trained, explosive athlete unloading on a woman that is giving up around 100 lbs. Every Sunday America watches grown men knock other grown men to the ground, the video outcome shouldn’t have come as a surprise.

The problem is that the NFL knew about the video (allegedly had it in their office) and chose not to pursue it to the fullest extent. Granted the NFL isn’t a law enforcement agency, so they don’t have subpoena power, but they are a group of 32 billionaires who know how to vet any situation….not to mention have bottomless pockets.

There is no reason why the NFL doesn’t chase down every alleged accusation as if their existence depended on it… because essentially it should. Sports are entertainment, and like it or not are governed by public perception.

Its utterly embarrassing that the the Kansas City Chiefs and NFL took the word of Kareem Hunt and didn’t follow up with an extensive investigation. Sure they made some obligatory phone calls, but never truly pursued the truth of what transpired in that Cleveland hotel.

They simply believed a young man attempting to save his career… In what world would he not paint the rosiest picture for himself?

I don’t blame Kareem Hunt for downplaying his actions (even though they are reprehensible) it was his act of self preservation. It is the NFL’s fault (and job) to find the actual truth.

But instead they allow TMZ to do their dirty work and then act surprised when a video was released. A part of me thinks they are just hoping some of the videos never surface and they won’t have to deal with them. However when pressed about paying for videos the NFL’s Chief Disciplinary Officer B. Todd Jones answered:

“I think that is not likely at all, for a number of reasons,” Jones said regarding the possibility of paying for videos. “Not the least of which is you all have a journalistic privilege, you all have First Amendment protections. You all can get information from sources and wrap it up in sort of like sources . . . we don’t have that luxury. To become mercenary and pay for videos opens up a Pandora’s box of all kinds of opportunities and things that may come to us from not just surveillance video in public places or surveillance video in residences, but you’re talking about the world of social media and everybody on a smart phone as TMZ’s in the business of doing, is buying people’s smart phone snippets for a fee, and the NFL’s not going there.”

This is almost as embarrassing as the NFL saying they can’t afford to pay for videos. Either they are admitting they would cost too much to follow up on or they aren’t smart enough discern real versus erroneous evidence.

Next are the Commissioner’s comments:

“We don’t pay for video evidence,” Goodell said. “That’s not appropriate for a league or organization to do that.”

“We’re not going to do it by corrupting people or trying to bribe them to give us video. That’s not what we do,

Corruption? Bribes? It’s simply paying for an exchange of information… and who cares if it’s “appropriate.” If you care about finding the truth and really cleaning up your league Roger, you need to do what it takes. Quit acting like you’re above paying for a video because it would ruin the moral fabric of the NFL or society. That’s the easy excuse for a league that would rather turn a blind eye.

The bottom line is the NFL has an endless supply of financial and human resources. They employ a bevy of local, state, and federal former law enforcement officials who have connections and contacts that seem to exist only in movies. There is no reason the NFL doesn’t have all the information they need to make a decision prior to the legal process playing out. They found enough evidence to sack Cowboys running back Zeke Elliot last season, but he was a high profile figure who could serve as an example about how the NFL has toughened its stance on domestic violence.

The reality of the Kareem Hunt situation proves the NFL really just doesn’t care.

After reading a text from another teammate asking if, “I had heard about Kudes”, it was highly unlikely the news was good, but never did I expect that he had passed away. It seemed almost surreal that on a day filled with tasks, when there was so much to do with so little time and energy, that I would learn of the passing of a teammate. One who left this world in the prime of his life.

He had all of the trappings of success, yet it obviously wasn’t enough.

Roughly every week or so I try to write something for my site. Recently I was struggling as to what it would be. Outside of the lack of competitive balance in the NBA, there wasn’t anything that was particularly inspiring.

It’s amazing the stuff the Lord can smack you with.

Mike was a teammate of mine for the Buckeyes from 2002-2005. We were both members of the storied 2002 recruiting class that finished up 2nd nationally. It was Jim Tressel’s first full class and we were supposed to return Ohio State to its rightful spot atop the national scene.

So during the recruiting process you meet other guys and eventually become friends. You play in All Star games together, travel the banquet circuit and slowly let down your competitive guard because this group will eventually become your teammates. It was no different with Kudes. He was one of the guys from Ohio who was tough, rugged, and hard nosed. It made him easy to like from the start.

After four years at Ohio State it is safe to say that Kudes was the strongest guy I played with in college. The guy was a monster in the weight room and always seemed to have a knack for making the big play in the big games. He had a deep bellowing voice that rivaled James Earl Jones and laugh that could fill any room.

I roomed with Kudes for a year at Ohio State and got a chance to see him where his patented black Oakley shades complimented his all black attire daily. The best part is we would give him a hard time about chewing a toothpick all the time that made him look like the Terminator. Kudes would always take it in stride… and then go bench 500lbs at our next work out.

Mike and I had lost touch somewhat (as college friends often do) after school. Life and careers got in the way, but a random encounter in 2013 changed all of that. I had just finished up a meeting about applying to the MBA program at Ohio State and while walking out of Fisher Hall I heard the voice that could only belong to Kudes. I followed it down a hallway and back into a random office where he was sitting.

It was a great meeting. We filled each other in our our last 5 years and what we had been doing. As it turned Kudes was managing development for the Fisher College of Business and we would see each other occasionally over the next 3 years. Eventually he left Ohio State and then the next time I heard of him was watching a video montage of the next chapter of his success.

Last year Mike named to the 40 under 40 list for Columbus Bizjournals and I couldn’t believe the stuff he was doing.

He was building Medical Centers across the state. After seeing this I knew it was time to contact him and congratulate him on the recent success. As fate would have it the day got away from me and then so did the next one. Before I knew it a year had passed and I never seized the moment. The next news I heard about Mike was about his passing.

Don’t wait.

 

Never wait to until tomorrow to reach out, because tomorrow may never come!

Everyone is fighting a tough battle and you might not know it. Give your friends a call and catch up because time and space have a way of distancing our friendships.

It was a chance for players to change schools without the player’s current institution having the ability to effectively block certain schools from the transfer list.

Up until this point for a player to transfer in Division 1 FBS Football, the player must notify his current institution that he would like to transfer and then wait for the list of “approved” schools that could contact him. This ruling seemed to abolish the nonsense.

But did it actually do anything?

After reading the NCAA ruling from their own website, the ability for schools to block player movement was eliminated.

The only problem is there is one glaring omission from the NCAA’s edict; it doesn’t eliminate conferences from continuing to block intra-conference transfers. So the long and short of it is players can transfer outside of their respective conference without penalty (outside of the mandatory 1 year absence from play for undergraduates), but inside the conference the schools still rule.

The amazing part of the entire process is that it has been over a week since the news broke and not a single Power 5 conference has commented on the rule change. Are they for it? Are they against it? No one really knows, because no conference wants to be the first to break rank and allow graduated transfers to leave and play immediately inside their conference without any regard for their former school… but no one wants to look like the bad guy either.

It’s the crux of the entire argument. NCAA Commissioner Mark Emmert didn’t want to push through real change, so he threw this nonsense out to placate everyone. Bundle it up with redshirt players getting limited game time and it’s a public relations win.

But it’s not.

Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany where are you? SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey why haven’t you taken the lead?

That’s right, all the commissioners are cowards and would much rather be reactive and hide in their expensive offices than try and promote real change that helps give players a chance to live their dream. They would rather sit around and collect their nice paychecks and pensions while guarding the golden goose and holding on to an antiquated system that penalizes players and enriches coaches, athletic directors and most of all… the commissioners.

Until one of the Power 5 conferences actually tries to level the playing field for coaches and players, we are going to hear more of this Nick Saban nonsense where he cries that his hands are tied by conference rules and speaks of transfers as if it will lead to an NFL free agency model.

Get a grip Nick and the commissioners should too.

My family is no different. With 4 sons and no daughters there wasn’t much “feeling sharing” in our house with my dad, and it was perfectly okay with me. Our house was supposed to be filled with tough, rugged men who didn’t have feelings and would rather wrestle with each other or go play football.

My dad was a product of his father, Robert Joseph Carpenter. The man whose name my son and both carry. He’s gone now…  passed away a few years ago at 85, but he wasn’t one to share his feelings with anyone either. As a product of the Korean War I often wondered it would have been like to watch him parent my dad. He was tough and burly, a man who filled the room with his bellowing voice.

Rob Carpenter Jr. came from humble beginnings… and my grandfather from even humbler ones. He was the 5th of 13 children and after his father was injured and could no longer work, most of the children were farmed out to relatives.

Grandpa Bob never graduated high school, but he gave my father a much better life than he had. It was always his “American Dream” to ensure that his children had more opportunities than he did.

The best way to honor someone is to live their advice and as a freshman in high school my father told me something that has been the driving force for my entire life.

On a cold winter morning on the way to school my freshman year we stopped at a light in front a construction site. Watching the tradesman pour out of their trucks and walk across the street he said something that has stuck with me ever since,

“The great thing about America is you are able to go as far as your talent and effort will take you. If you work hard enough you can change the trajectory not only of your lift, but also your family.”

My grandfather had instilled glass windows in high rise buildings in downtown Columbus for decades. It was long hours and grueling labor, but it was the best way he could provide for his family. He allowed my father to earn his way to college and now, through my parents sacrifice they have been able to provide me the life and opportunities that I have today.

There is no possible way to repay them for the life I have been able to live.

So while I love getting gifts for my father… the best gift is living his advice.

While I personally don’t agree with the way many in the NFL have went about expressing their objections to the problems they see in America. Malcolm Jenkins refused to let him message get lost in the bantering between the NFL and the White House…. and I respect it.

After meeting Malcolm in 2005 when he joined Ohio State, I quickly discovered what many people now know. Malcolm Jenkins is smart, driven and passionate. He is a leader of men and someone who I’ve grown to admire.

So when he decided to remain silent during his media availability on Wednesday, it was a brilliant move. Malcolm chose to express his message through giant note cards. Focusing on the lack opportunities in under served communities and providing 2nd chances to non violent offenders in the state of Pennsylvania.

Malcolm grabbed his chance after the Eagles were “dis-invited” from their White House celebration.

He took the message off of the anthem and back to his mission. In the era of divisiveness that we currently live in, where its easier to argue than solve problems. Malcolm Jenkins is trying to solve the problems that he deems serious. While some of the stats he posted could be interpreted differently, he owned the interview.

The Malcolm Jenkins I know is someone who is incredibly smart and articulate. Hopefully he will be able to get a private meeting with the President to discuss the issues that are dear to his heart, because Malcolm is a problems solver and the perspective he provides can only be a positive. I applaud his persistence and the manner in which he has handled this difficult situation because he never elected to take a “knee” during the anthem … and he won’t take a knee on his mission either.

This tweet came 10 days after the tough decision that Burrow was forced to make following a solid spring performance for the Scarlet and Gray.

After weeks of struggling with this decision, I have decided to leave Ohio State and explore other options. My teammates and coaches all know the love I feel for them. I will decide where I will play next year in the coming weeks.

It wasn’t an easy decision for Burrow. Growing up in Athens, Ohio and becoming a Buckeye while his father coached at Ohio University only made it tougher. After leading Athens to the Division III State Runner Up behind a six touchdown performance in the ‘Shoe, Burrow was hoping similar success would happen for the Buckeyes in the coming years.

He was J.T. Barrett’s pick to become the next starter for the Buckeyes and it was easy to see why. Burrow shared J.T.’s relentless work ethic and the type of leadership that often goes underrated. Burrow is more athletic than he looks and has developed his body into the type of player that can not only take a beating in the pocket, but also be a rough and rugged runner.

Ohio State fans will miss Joe Burrow. Not because Haskins isn’t going to be a great player, but because he embodies much of what college football is supposed to be about.

Developing yourself into a player… and that’s exactly what Burrow has done.

Many don’t like the graduate transfer rule in college football, but this is it working at it’s finest. A young man enters school, works his tail off and it 3 years is ready to play and graduates. In some cases when you’re ready to play, your school isn’t ready for you.

It’s what happened to Joe.

Haskins will be a fine player, but Burrow deserves a chance to see what he can become. LSU will give him that chance… and they will not be disappointed.

Without knowing much about the LSU roster, it’s safe to say they will have ample talent surrounding Burrow. Judging by the number of skill position players in the NFL, it will be more than ample.

The University of Cincinnati would have been the safe choice for Burrow. Following for Ohio State Defensive Coordinator Luke Fickell and staying in the state of Ohio would have made for familiar surroundings, but Burrow wanted to challenge himself and see if he can master the SEC. It’s a bold move, but one that makes sense after knowing the work ethic that he possesses.

After watching Joe develop for three seasons, there are many similarities to Alex Smith. Not to say he will be the first pick in the NFL draft, but their traits are similar. Both have a very good arm and are solid decision makers (somehow that became a negative a decade ago), both are better runners than most believe and they are respected by how they prepare.

The Bayou Bengals are getting a good one in Joey Burrow.

In other words, Nevada had just lost their monopoly on the gaming world.

No longer will someone have to fly to the desert to place a legal wager on a game or person, it was the only legal way to do it. Many others have been participating on offshore website for years or through less than legal means where ever they live.

Even though I am about as conservative as they come, I believe it is still the right of every person to make their own choices. Good or bad, liberty grants us all the right or succeed or fail. I’m not a big sports gambler, but I do enjoy the office pools and now dabble in fantasy. Many Americans participate in the same way, but were terrified at the thought of legalizing Sports’ books nationwide.

The usual thoughts are how gambling can ruin lives (which it can), create a seedy underbelly to the community (which isn’t really true) and possibly worst of all; corrupt the integrity of the sports we know and love (which could’ve been happening all along).

I am encouraged by the Supreme Court ruling and believe that there will be a very small set of negative consequences, offset by the security and assurance that comes with highly regulated industries. There are many games that I would’ve like to bet on but didn’t, because there was no legal pathway or I didn’t feel comfortable sticking my banking information into a unregulated offshore website. It seems like there are many sports fans who fall into this category.

The largest negative of the whole process seems to be the professional leagues who now are trying to grab their perceived piece of the pie with “integrity fees.” As if the NFL, MLB, NBA, and NHL are going to create task forces to make sure no one is on the take…. If they were that worried, they should have already had these systems in place.

Betting on sports is no new phenomenon. Now that each state will be free to regulate their own interest, it will be easier to follow the law. No one will be forcing fans to bet, but at least now there is an above board option. Europe has permitted betting on games for years and no one is complaining the EPL is corrupt. While there will always be a downside, this one, I believe is small.

Now where can I place my 1st bet!

The Players:

Denzel Ward, Cleveland Browns (no.4)

This might not have been the most popular pick among the Cleveland faithful, but Denzel was the best cover corner in draft. He has great balls skills and and is great in press coverage. Defensive Coordinator Gregg Williams plays a ton of press man and no one was better than Ward in this draft.

“Ward. The reason is our need for a press cover cornerback. Denzel probably plays that position as well as anyone I’ve seen in college football in some time. We probably play the most press of any team in the league. -Gregg Williams

He has rare athleticism combined with great character. Week 1 starter.

Billy Price, Cincinnati Bengals (no.21)

Offensive line was huge position of need for Cincy. They spent a 1st and 2nd rounder a few years back on tackles Ogbuehi and Fisher that has produced limited success. Price is already penciled in as the starter heading into training camp for a team that has been searching for a replaced for Kevin Zeitler who left via free agency. The Bengals were at their best running the ball to set up the pass a couple of seasons ago.

Price’s strength will give them great push inside. His pec injury should be fully healed by August. Week 1 starter.

Tyquan Lewis, Indianapolis Colts (no.64)

The Colts defense was in need of a massive overall. One of the more porous units over the past few seasons, newly minted Defensive Coordinator Matt Eberflus will be converting the from a 3-4 to a 4-3 defensive front. To make the change, a different type of player was needed. Lewis fits this need. His strength and fundamental play make him the ideal run stuffer to play left defensive end.  Henry Anderson is penciled in as the incumbent starter, but Lewis will be given his shot and was drafted due to his scheme fit.

Lewis is a tough and physical player. Not the most athletic pass rusher, but he was a 5 year college player and very polished. Will play 65% of snaps.

Jerome Baker, Miami Dolphins (no.73)

Miami loves Buckeye Linebackers. After drafting Raekwon McMillian in the 2nd round a year ago to fill their need at MLB, the Dolphins returned to the Buckeye state for help at the strong side. Miami is in the midst of a youth movement and Baker will add the type of speed that Coordinator Matt Burke covets. Last season Miami made the midseason acquisition of Stephone Anthony. The 3rd year player was traded from New Orleans after a couple of injury riddled season.

Prior to the start of the 2017 season many “experts” thought Baker would be a 1st rounder, however is smaller size and deficiences caused him to fall. He has a great opportunity to become a full time starter but he conservatively will play 35% of snaps.

Sam Hubbard, Cincinnati Bengals (no.77)

The second Buckeye selected by Cincy. Hubbard will return home to the Queen City where he starred at Archbishop Moeller. Teryl Austin joins the Bengals at Defensive Coordinator after leading a Lions squad for the last four seasons. The Bengals have always been very multiple in their front packages under previous D Coordinators Mike Zimmer and Paul Guenther, the drafting of players like Hubbard looks to keep this trend alive. Carlos Dunlap has been a mainstay at the left defensive end for many years and Hubbard will be expected to be a solid rotation player.

Hubbard’s length and versatility could afford him the ability to play some outside linebacker in sub packaging situations. He’s a smart player that lacks long range speed, but will play at least 35% of snaps.

Jalyn Holmes, Minnesota Vikings (no.102)

The Minnesota Vikings love their D Lineman. Going pack to the Purple People Eaters, the Vikings have always boasted a fantastic front. With Sheldon Richardson and Linval Joseph anchoring the inside on run downs, Holmes (Defensive End) will provide a nice inside rotational pass rusher on 3rd downs. Joseph is aging and will need spelled later in games. On 1st and 2nd down Holmes will likely stay outside at defensive end and help provide relief for Brian Robinson.

Holmes added size every year at Ohio State and has the potential to continue the trend. Eventually he could become a full time defensive tackle but this season he should play 15% to 20%.

Jamarco Jones, Seattle Seahawks (no.168)

One of the more surprising developments in the 2018 draft. Jones was pretty highly ranked after his Junior season, but many scouts saw a decline in his play his senior year. Seattle is undergoing a massive redevelopment along the offensive line. After firing longtime coach Tom Cable this offseason the Seahawks look to change philosophies of how they draft and develop players. They traded for former Texan left tackle Duane Brown, but Jones could be seen as his eventual replacement.

Jones is talented and has good technique, but his size could be concern. With development he could become a starter, but he will have to prove he can over come his lack of size against longer defenders. He will be a backup swing tackle.

For the 256 players drafted it will be a chance to live out their dream. Getting drafted into the NFL and hearing your named called seems the pinnacle of every little fantasy.

The day for many will be incredibly stressful. Even though most of the players anticipate being drafted, there is still an uneasy certainty of when their name will be called.

At the top of the draft it seems like each pick is lasting a lifetime, but once the picks begin to move into their “Projected Zone” its a different story. My story reads:

April 29th was a big day, but it was a day I wanted to spend with my family and friends. I wasn’t offered attend the draft in New York, but I wouldn’t have attended anyway. Very few realize the limited number of ticket each player gets to the draft event and even fewer are able to sit in the green room. The NFL covers very little of the cost of travel and lodging, so how are you supposed to celebrate a dream coming true if the people who helped along the way can’t even be there with you?

Rob and Susie’s house was going to do just fine. There family, friends, teammates, coaches and neighbors all gathers the celebrate the day. Regardless of when or where I was drafted it was going to be a great day. It’s much easier said then done. As the teams who were interested in me began to creep to the podium, my nerves began to heighten.

I didn’t think I would be nervous at all (partially because I was confident in my draft stock and partially because of the number of beers consumed), but after the top 10 it was all over my face.

Over 100 people where at my parents to celebrate the day and trying to stay poised during the process was getting tough. As the Browns passed, then the Dolphins, the Dallas Cowboys were next in the line of teams who were very interested.

At pick #18 my phone rang, it was Jerry Jones and Bill Parcells. Elation was everywhere and as I walked to the patio to gain some quiet, I watched the room explode as my name was called by Paul Tagliabue.

The party was on.

The rest of evening was filled with the consumption of Coors Light and toasts by all. The party went late into the night, until the point my mother was starting to ask people to leave. It was good clean fun until about 9:30. At that point many of my friends, who had been drinking since 11:30 we getting riled up. The night crescendoed when a life long friend tried to fight our old Assistant Principle, who was also my neighbor. It was a great story and one that we tell often.

But every draft story isn’t this pleasant. After watching Aaron Rodgers sit in the green room and watch the draft pass him by, I can only imagine the terrible feeling he felt. Trying to stay calm and not show is disappointment and devastation. Aaron was able to have the last laugh by becoming the best QB in the game, but every story doesn’t always have a happy ending.

Dreams will be made this weekend, but all draft days are not created equal.
