PRESS RELEASE
Alliance For Change (AFC) – On Guyana’s 60th Independence Anniversary Celebrations

As the nation winds-down the celebrations on the occasion of our 60th Independence Anniversary, the Alliance For Change (AFC) joins all Guyanese at home and abroad in celebrating the 60th Anniversary of our nation’s Independence, and saying thank you. Sixty years of nationhood is a remarkable milestone – worthy of pride, reflection, gratitude, and renewed commitment to building a stronger and more united Guyana.

We commend the Government and all those who worked tirelessly to organise the commemorative activities and national events marking this important occasion. National celebrations of this magnitude require significant effort, coordination, and resources, and many citizens appreciated the spirit of patriotism and pride displayed throughout the country.

At the same time, the AFC believes that love of country also requires honesty and reflection.

Several aspects of the official celebrations revealed shortcomings that should not be ignored if future national events are to truly embody the spirit of “One Guyana.”

The decision to host the principal Independence celebration at Fort Island raised legitimate concerns among many Guyanese. While Fort Island is undeniably part of our colonial history, many citizens viewed the choice of venue as insensitive to the painful legacy of slavery, oppression, and colonial domination associated with that location. Independence celebrations should inspire national unity and symbolise the progress of a free people moving confidently into the future. After sixty years of independence, many expected a venue and atmosphere that reflected our aspirations as a modern nation rather than reminders of our subjugation. Confronting the threat to our sovereignty, by the symbolic flag-raising, should not have been the primary consideration that inspired the chosen location.

Equally troubling were the logistical difficulties and transportation problems experienced by many attendees. National celebrations should be accessible, inclusive, and welcoming to ordinary citizens from every walk of life. Independence observances have historically been public events where parents brought their children to witness the raising of the Golden Arrowhead, to share stories of struggle and sacrifice, and to pass on a sense of national pride to the next generation. Sadly, many Guyanese were left with the impression that this year’s principal observance separated the privileged from the ordinary citizen.

The unfortunate flag-raising incident also became symbolic of broader frustrations felt across the country. While many Guyanese responded with humour and satire, beneath the jokes lies a serious national sentiment: citizens want celebrations that are authentic, inclusive, dignified, and reflective of the realities facing ordinary people.

The AFC therefore proposes that future national anniversary celebrations be organized through a resuscitated, and broad-based, National Events Planning Committee comprising representatives from the Government, Parliamentary Opposition, civil society, faith-based organizations, youth groups, cultural organizations, Indigenous representatives, and the private sector. Our national celebrations belong to all Guyanese, not to any one administration or political party.

Such a committee would help ensure that future commemorations are more inclusive, culturally sensitive, historically balanced, and accessible to the wider public. More importantly, it would reinforce the principle that our Independence is a shared national inheritance.
As we celebrate sixty years of freedom, the AFC calls on all Guyanese to recommit themselves to the ideals upon which our nation was founded: unity, justice, equality, democracy, and opportunity for all.

The Golden Arrowhead belongs to every Guyanese, and is ours to defend. Our Independence celebrations should always reflect that truth. May God continue to bless Guyana.

PRESS RELEASE
ALLIANCE FOR CHANGE SUPPORTS CALL FOR THE RECONVENING OF PARLIAMENT AND COMMITTEES

The Alliance For Change (AFC) fully supports the call made by the Forward Guyana Movement (FGM) for the urgent reconvening of the National Assembly and the reactivation of the Parliamentary Standing and Sectoral Committees, all of which are essential to the proper functioning of Guyana’s parliamentary democracy.

Parliament is the supreme deliberative forum of the people of Guyana. Its prolonged dormancy, and the failure to convene the Standing Committees charged with oversight and accountability, represent a dangerous and deliberate weakening of democratic governance.
The AFC strongly condemns the continued manipulation and abuse of the Constitution and the Standing Orders of the National Assembly by the PPP/C Administration in its apparent quest to extinguish the light of parliamentary democracy and weaken institutional checks and balances. Such conduct undermines transparency, accountability, and public confidence in the democratic process.

It is deeply unfortunate that the diplomatic community has once again found it necessary to intervene in a matter that ought to be routine and standard operating procedure in any properly functioning parliamentary democracy. Guyana’s 60th Anniversary as an independent nation is meaningless if we neuter the National Assembly and have to rely on foreigners to tell us how to govern. The convening of Parliament and its committees should never depend on external prompting or pressure. The Government of Guyana has a constitutional and moral obligation to ensure that democratic institutions function effectively and continuously.

The Alliance For Change therefore calls upon the other opposition parties, and particularly, WIN and APNU, to publicly support the petition and join the collective call for Parliament to be made fully functional without further delay. At this critical juncture, political differences must be set aside in defence of democratic governance, constitutional rule, and parliamentary oversight.

Further, the AFC wishes to announce that it will be formally writing to the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) to lodge a complaint concerning Guyana’s ongoing breach of accepted parliamentary norms, democratic conventions, and the principles of accountable governance expected of Commonwealth member states.
The people of Guyana deserve a Parliament that works in their interest — one that debates, scrutinizes, legislates, and holds the Executive accountable. Democracy cannot survive in darkness, silence, and institutional paralysis.

PRESS RELEASE

Arrival Day message from the Alliance For Change

On this Arrival Day, we pause to honour the courage, endurance, and hope of those who arrived on these shores from Africa, India, Portugal, China, and elsewhere, shaping the foundation of modern Guyana. In doing so, we recognise the original presence of our indigenous brothers and sisters, who were the first to make this land habitable.

The journey of our ancestors to these shores was not easy. It was marked by struggle, resilience, and determination. Yet from that hardship emerged a rich, diverse nation—one people forged from many origins, bound together by shared history and common destiny.

The Alliance For Change (AFC) reflects this very spirit of unity in diversity. Arrival Day reminds us that Guyana’s greatest strength has always been its people—working together across differences to build a better future.

As we commemorate this important day, let us recommit ourselves to a Guyana where opportunity is shared, dignity is protected, and every citizen—regardless of heritage—can thrive in peace and prosperity.

Happy Arrival Day, Guyana.

April 30, 2026
PRESS RELEASE
Labour Day Message from the Alliance For Change

On this Labour Day, the Alliance For Change (AFC) extends sincere greetings and appreciation to all workers across Guyana whose daily efforts sustain our families, communities, and national development.

From the sugar and rice fields, to our many construction sites, public services, private enterprises, schools, hospitals, and emerging industries, the working men and women of Guyana remain the true backbone of our nation. Your labour, resilience, and commitment continue to drive the country forward, often in the face of rising living costs, evolving economic pressures, and changing global realities.
We especially salute the women and the mothers, and those who struggle daily, to "make ends meet" in an increasingly difficult economy.

Labour Day is more than a public holiday—it is a reminder of the enduring struggle for fair wages, safe working conditions, social protection, and respect for workers’ rights.
The AFC reaffirms its commitment to policies that place working people at the centre of national development, including:

  • Fair and livable wages that reflect the cost of living
  • Stronger protections for workers in both public and private sectors
  • Expanded access to skills training and meaningful employment opportunities for youth
  • Greater support for small businesses and entrepreneurship as engines of job creation
  • Respect for trade unions as essential partners in national dialogue

We also recognise the sacrifices of essential workers—teachers, nurses, security personnel, sanitation workers, and public servants—whose dedication often goes unnoticed but is vital to national stability and wellbeing.

As Guyana continues to experience economic transformation, it is critical that growth is inclusive, equitable, and rooted in opportunity for all—not just a few. This complaint grows louder and more painful by the day. Unfortunately, it seems not to be heard by the government, as it’s friends, family and favorites enjoy the best of the land.
The AFC remains committed to advocating for a fairer economy where every worker can share in the nation’s progress. On this Labour Day, we salute every worker in Guyana. Your labour is the foundation upon which our present and future are built. Happy Labour Day.

Alliance For Change (AFC) Expresses Grave Disappointment Over Government’s Mishandling of Domestic Fuel Supply

The Alliance For Change (AFC) today expresses its grave disappointment and deep concern over the Government of Guyana’s apparent mismanagement of the domestic fuel supply, which has resulted in widespread shortages and inconvenience to citizens and businesses across the country.

The AFC notes with alarm that, despite clear and growing signs of a looming global energy crisis, the Government was both deliberately and negligently slow in responding to the situation and in putting measures in place to safeguard the domestic supply chain. This lack of foresight and preparedness has now manifested in empty gas stations, long lines, and uncertainty for ordinary Guyanese who depend on fuel for their daily livelihoods.

Particularly troubling is the President’s belated announcement that the situation is being “monitored,” coming only after fuel shortages had already become widespread and disruptive. Such a reactive posture is unacceptable and reflects a failure of leadership at the highest level. Monitoring a crisis after it has already impacted the population is not governance—it is abdication of responsibility.

The AFC believes that the Government had both the time and the resources to anticipate and mitigate these challenges. Proactive engagement with suppliers, strategic stockpiling, and clear communication with the public could have significantly reduced the impact of this situation. Instead, the Guyanese people have been left unprepared and unsupported.

We call on the Government to:
1. Provide an immediate and transparent explanation for the current fuel shortages;
2. Outline concrete steps being taken to restore stable supply in the shortest possible time;
3. Implement a comprehensive and forward-looking energy contingency plan to prevent recurrence; and
4. Communicate clearly and consistently with the public on developments and timelines.

The AFC stands ready to support all efforts that place the interests of the Guyanese people first. However, we will not remain silent in the face of evident mismanagement and disregard for the welfare of our citizens. End

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Georgetown, Guyana — April 13, 2026

The Alliance For Change (AFC) extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues affected by the tragic crash of an Air Services Limited aircraft in the hinterland (Region 8) of Guyana.

We are profoundly saddened by reports that the aircraft, which was operating in Region 8, has been located with the loss of the life of the pilot confirmed. Even a single loss of life under such circumstances is a tragedy that touches the entire nation.

The AFC acknowledges and commends the swift response of the Guyana Defense Force Special Forces and all emergency personnel involved in the search and recovery operations, which were undertaken under very challenging conditions. Their dedication and professionalism in the face of adversity are deserving of national recognition.

At this time of grief, we stand in solidarity with the aviation community, the staff of Air Services Limited, and all those impacted by this heartbreaking incident. We urge that every effort be made to provide support to the bereaved and to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the cause of the crash to help prevent future tragedies.

The AFC calls on all Guyanese to keep the affected families in their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

May the departed rest in peace.

As the holy month of Ramadan comes to a close, the Alliance For Change (AFC) extends warmest greetings to our Muslim brothers and sisters across Guyana and the diaspora on the joyous occasion of Eid al-Fitr.

Eid is a time of gratitude, reflection, compassion, and renewal. It reminds us of the strength found in faith, the importance of family and community, and the enduring values of generosity and unity. These are values that resonate deeply within our national spirit.

In a country as richly diverse as ours, moments like these invite us all—regardless of background—to recommit ourselves to harmony, mutual respect, and shared purpose. Guyana’s strength lies in its people, and in our ability to stand together, especially in times that call for understanding and cohesion. May the values of Ramadan permeate the days and months ahead.

The AFC celebrates with you and wishes that this Eid brings peace to your homes, prosperity to your endeavours, and hope for the future of our beloved and beleaguered nation.

PRESS RELEASE

The AFC supports the continuation of Cuban medical services in Guyana.

The Alliance For Change (AFC) has joined the growing call for greater appreciation of the long-standing cooperation and friendship that exists between Guyana and the Republic of Cuba. For decades, the relationship between our two nations has been built on solidarity, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to improving the well-being of our people. Through educational exchanges, technical cooperation, and particularly in the field of healthcare, Cuba has consistently demonstrated a willingness to stand with Guyana during periods of need and development. The AFC believes that this partnership represents a model of regional collaboration that should be recognized and valued.

The Cuban Medical Brigades have, for many years, formed a critical pillar of Guyana’s healthcare system. Their presence has helped address shortages of specialized medical personnel, strengthened services in rural and hinterland communities, and ensured that thousands of Guyanese receive care that might otherwise be unavailable. Cuban doctors, nurses, and healthcare professionals have worked side by side with local medical staff, often serving in challenging environments while providing high-quality medical treatment and training that benefits our national health sector.

As a country and as a political party, the Alliance For Change acknowledges and deeply appreciates the contributions made by the Cuban people through these medical missions. Their dedication has saved lives, strengthened our health institutions, and fostered goodwill between our nations. For these reasons, the AFC supports the continued presence and cooperation of Cuban medical professionals in Guyana and across the Caribbean region, and advocates for policies that ensure this important partnership is maintained and respected for the benefit of all our people.

PRESS RELEASE
AFC Pays Tribute to Stabroek News: A Pillar of Guyana’s Free Press

As March unfolds, we are confronted with the stark realization that Stabroek News—a bastion of the free press in Guyana—appears to be moving irreversibly toward a painful closure. How do we say farewell, and thank you, to an institution that helped define who we are as Guyanese. For decades it made a difference in the lives of tens of thousands, every day of every year.
The Alliance For Change celebrates the immense contribution of Stabroek News to our
democracy. It educated us in culture and the arts; it provided a forum where friends and foes alike could air their opinions, disagreements, and frustrations; and it consistently sought to maintain balance in a society often pulled toward dangerous extremes.

The AFC itself was never spared the “slings and arrows” of its sharp editorials or the pointed criticisms found in its letters columns. Yet when credit was due, it was given. That was the mark of a newspaper committed to fairness and intellectual honesty.

Today we gladly celebrate the founders, the editors, the daily and weekly contributors, and above all the many silent workers whose efforts sustained the newspaper: the editors and proofreaders who shaped the words, the staff who formatted the pages, the printers who brought them to life, and the drivers who carried the news through the darkness so that Guyanese could begin each day informed. To all of you, we say: thank you.

It is deeply unfortunate that Stabroek News has become a casualty not only of the changing tides affecting newspapers worldwide, but also of a political climate that too often treats criticism as hostility. A democracy thrives on scrutiny; it weakens when dissent is met with vindictiveness or intolerance.

We therefore encourage all right-thinking Guyanese to stand up for fairness, decency, and respect—for a Guyana where differences of thought, political affiliation, culture, and belief are embraced as sources of strength rather than occasions for exclusion and hostility.

In reflecting on this moment, we are reminded of the words of our celebrated poet, Martin Carter, written in 1974. His words shout across the decades and speak powerfully to our time:

I have at last started
to understand the origin
of our vileness, and being unable to deny it, I suggest its nativity.
In the shame of knowledge of our vileness,
we shall fight.”

And so we must continue to fight—for truth, for justice, and for the preservation of the freedoms that make our democracy meaningful.

AFC Welcomes Opposition Leader Election While Highlighting Need for
Transparency and Media Freedom

The Alliance for Change openly welcomes the holding of the long-delayed election for the leader of the constitutionally elected Opposition. We wish Mr. Mohamed and the opposition well as they represent first and foremost the interest of the Guyanese people.

Respecting our constitution is directly showing respect to the Guyanese people, and the rule of law.

We also take note of the practice in barring or attacking the members of the media especially from witnessing and televising to all the Guyanese people, the election of the Leader of Opposition. This goes against the practice of good governance, transparency, and balance towards the Guyanese people.
