For international students who come from Asian countries and are enrolled in the U.S. universities, learning could be both enjoyable and challenging since there are big differences between Eastern and Western academic cultures. As a postgraduate student from China, I felt a little bit frustrating when struggling with schoolwork and language problems during the first semester. Fortunately, things became much better in the spring semester, and I also found some ways for international students to make an effective learning and get prepared for graduate study.
Adjust learning style
During studying in China, I used to listen to lectures, take notes, and accept what teacher said but didn’t do practice of critical thinking very frequently. However, critical thinking is a crucial part of learning in American academic culture. When preparing for the Multidisciplinary Colloquium Project for EAP class, we learned how to search for literature references and make connections among various sources. And when having in-class discussions and debate, there should be enough data or evidence for a hypothesis to make it credible. Besides, the pathway program helped me to think through multi-disciplines as well. I aim in finding a job in the overlap area between architecture and management field. After 10month study at INTO Mason University, I am getting used to think about management issues from an architecture student’s perspective, and find there are still lot work to do in order to be successful in my early career.
Study with friends
In undergraduate school in China, our grades mainly depend on attendance and the final exam, seldom do we take quiz every week. But here in the U.S., every single test and assignment work for the overall grades. Thus, to get a higher grade, we should be careful with every piece of schoolwork. However, it is possible for us to get stressful keep working hard through a whole semester. Then studying with friends seems to be a good idea, at least it works for me. Although I didn’t study with group partners in undergraduate school, but during the first semester on INTO Accounting program, I often met friends at the Gateway library and spent a whole afternoon working for assignments. Before exams, we quizzed each other as well to check whether we were familiar with a certain chapter on the textbook. I also see a group of students sit around and study together in the lobby of INTO Mason University Hall.
Say “I don’t’ know”
In traditional Asian culture, being uncertain about something shows a lack of self-confidence and could be regarded as being “unfriendly”. For example, when someone is being asked a question that he or she does not know for sure, it’s usually better to give an answer than directly saying “I’m not sure” or “I don’t know”, even the answer itself is not one-hundred percent correct. However, I find it is normal to show my uncertainty about questions in American campus. When taking EAP 507 classes, we were encouraged to answer questions actively and coming up with new questions in class. Professors were glad to ask our questions about class content especially questions for academic writing, and they also said “Sorry, I don’t know” when there should be more discussion on some questions. Thus, as students, we were inspired to open our mind and do our own research instead of waiting for an answer.

Brief Comment on Intellectual Property in Academic Culture of the U.S.
When I was a student majored architecture in undergraduate school, I was thrilled when seeing China Pavilion (He Jingtang, 2009) at Shanghai Expo 2010. Its structure reminded me with Chinese traditional buildings: the height and width made it look massive, and the red color was as bright as flame. It was hard to describe how excited I was to see a well-combined structure with traditional and modern buildings. However, with a huge disappointment, I heard that it was suspected of having a same inner structure with a Japanese temple designed by Tadao Ando in 2000, and it also looked like Hanoi Museum (gmp-von Gerkan, Marg and Partners Architects, 2009) in Vietnam. Consequently, I felt totally disappointed and treated the China Pavilion as a fake.
International Students and Academic Integrity in American Academic Culture
Singleton (2011) stated that it is the unique design that made a building precious, and monetary payment is a measurable and direct way to recognize its value. Thus, intellectual property law plays an irreplaceable role for designers. Not only in art sphere, “academic integrity” is deemed of great significance among all academic field. There is no doubt that due to the diversity of political, economic, and cultural system, Eastern and Western scholars sometimes may have different opinions in understanding the concepts of “academic integrity” and “plagiarism”. We see these academic moral concepts, for example, “intellectual property” as a more western concept in multiple ways, especially for the reason that it can be traced back to 1624 in England (Merges, 2011).
Since many international students do not know well about American academic culture before their first arriving to the States, they may be astonished by school honor code. Compared to other academic culture, originality always goes first in America, and the integrity test turn to be extremely rigorous. According to Zhao and Wang (2008), scholars in China are inclined to write “critical” papers and thesis, while in western countries more attention are payed to doing research, thus, more scholars dedicate themselves to scientific tests and experiments. Previous ideas are crucial for individuals who are studying in higher education.
Undoubtedly, it is our duty to cite former researchers’ names and specific dates for showing appreciate. However, Neville (2010) claimed that, there are unavoidable anxiety even among American domestic students due to those over-strict citation rules. For international students, they may be facing a circumstance which is more challenging. If we turn back the clock, Chinese international students were praised for their carefulness and diligence. However, part of Chinese students are not as honest as prior ones in some professors’ eyes. To name only a few, they are suspected of cheating on exams, doing false citation, and self-plagiarism on different courses (Zhao, Wang. 2008).
Advice for Mason Incoming International Students
Had I given a chance to provide advice to Mason incoming international students, I would concentrate on the problems of cheating and plagiarizing. First, be familiar with school honor code and never duplicate others’ work, no matter what kind of work it is. According to The Mason Honor Code (2016), academic cheating may be both crucial and easily overlooked. Cheating work can be unauthorized assistance in exams, prior work of other students, or even one’s own prior work. Especially, when doing group work, it is necessary to communicate with other students and share ideas with them. But the grade could be a F without critical thinking. Second, use quote mark correctly in direct quotation. For international students who are unfamiliar with the English language, directly paraphrasing is indeed a convenient approach of presenting opinions from multiple perspectives. Regrettably, international students sometimes are put into trouble when doing false citation because of limitation on English language. Third, be careful when doing indirect citation. We are supposed to read materials carefully, then try to “translate” authors’ ideas into our own words. Taking notes of main points during reading should be helpful as well, for we are able to go through the key information before set about writing our paper. Fortunately, we have EAP class and PROV class at Mason for incoming international students to help with academic writing. As a result, we are unlikely to violate school honor code.

Discipline
Generally, management is a discipline with broad scope of subjects. To be successful in this field, it is necessary to combine personal academic background with work experiences. Thus, students with multi-discipline mindset are more likely to stand out. This discipline emphasize leadership, teamwork, analytical decision making, global understanding, and ethics and social responsibility. After graduation, students might find jobs such as human resources assistants, consultants, property managers, and business analysts.
Academic Goals
As a previous architecture student who are currently major in management, I am trying to investigate deeply the overlap area between those two disciplines, and would like to take part in programs that could help managers and decision-makers of architecture projects get more knowledge about the projects as well as management skills. Besides, my academic interests set in real estate management as well. Thus, I would like to join a professional team with fresh ideas to help promote the innovation of urban planning in modern Chinese cities, too.
A plan of study
For graduate students on Management program in George Mason University, 10 major courses in 4 modules are required which take 36 credits in total, and two of which could be finished during study at INTO Management program.
Except for English language classes, INTO Management requires two major courses which are BMGT-613 (financial reporting and firm analysis) and BMGT-633 (Statistical Analysis for Management).
Since I transferred from INTO Accounting program to Management program after the first semester, I plan take courses BMGT-613 in 2017 summer in order to finish INTO Management program and get prepared for graduate study before fall 2017.

To me, urban planning is a challenge of resource distribution, while management is a game of arrangement. I never regret choosing urban planning as part of my main education at school. I learned about how to make overall arrangement to achieve certain development goals as well as to solve social problems to a city. Similarly, for a company, it is necessary to make proper plans for its orderly, continuous and efficient operation.
During the third and fourth years at undergraduate school, I took at least four major courses each semester, to name a few, Architectural construction, Architecture design theory, Principle of city planning and Real estate development & management. The courses required me to organize time efficiently so that other schoolwork such as optional courses, GRE and GMAT did not suffer as a result of time-management problems. Similarly, during the first semester on INTO Mason Accounting program, I took four courses which were Introduction to Graduate study for International students I, Graduate communication in the disciplines I, Foundations of financial reporting I, and Foundations of taxation of business entities. For me, the taxation and financial reporting were two brand-new courses. Although challenging, they helped me realize where my academic interests lies in indeed. I believed INTO Mason Management program would give me opportunity to combine my academic experience of urban planning major and interest in management. Currently, I have got full marks in quiz and midterm exam for Statistical analysis for management by so far. And it is encouraging to know that George Mason University provides courses on business analyze which will assist me in future career.
While in China, at Beijing Architectural Design Institute of Science &Technology Co., LTD. (BADIST), Xi’an Branch, the reputed architectural design company that I have served for approximately 1 year, I examined what I learned at undergraduate school and gained valuable chances to extend them to the professional level. I enjoyed the job greatly when I was still a green hand and shouldered basic responsibilities such as sorting and archiving previous planning project reports and client information for I usually managed to acquire fresh insights and develop interesting ideas through reading those materials. More appreciatively, I could always turn to the recourse of professional and experienced members when encountering difficulties in my investigations. I also had the opportunity to join in a villa area development project at Yulin city, assisting the project planners in strategizing resources and translating their key ideas for the designers. In such environment, I grew intensely to adapt in the team and was given opportunities to receive high standard training as well as to accomplish challenging tasks. At undergraduate school, I had worked as the Assistant Secretary General in student senate where I obtained confidence, communication skills and problem solving abilities, and became interested in management related work since then. For two years, I earned the Outstanding Student Leader Award. Responsibility also helped me to take my position seriously. Indeed, tolerance is crucial in group work. However, if I am an ordinary member in a team instead of a person responsible, I will speak out my opinion but eventually do what I am told to do, while I will be more confident about my idea and would like to take responsibility for it if I am a team leader.
From the age of nine, I attended a teenager tennis club and competed at county level. After enrolled in undergraduate school, I joined the school track & field team as a middle-distance runner. The feeling that I got when I played a role within the team was amazing, more impressive than achieved an individual medal. At Mason, I keep on the exercise habit and go to gym regularly—usually three or four times per week. The cognition of properly managing schoolwork with a hobby which was not physically challenging, but emotionally required has given me an understanding of how to be practical, a skill which is valuable when planning certain business strategies.
For leisure, I do reading outside of classroom as well. I have passion for gaining knowledge and keep updating myself with new information, as well as being fascinating by foreign languages and cultural differences. Also, I am curious in and find it interesting how scholars manage their researches and how theories on books be flexibly applied to the real world. So, I have been reading some economics and business suggested books in leisure time.
Graduate school is a path to realize my interest and future career. To achieve my long-term aims, obtaining a MS degree is one of the most crucial short-term aims in coming three years. Given the chance to study at Mason graduate school, I would be thrilled to take courses such as Performance evaluation through cost management and Managing business operations in a global environmentThe learning experience at the George Mason University will be valuable asset for starting my early career. I would also love to share my ideas from an architecture student’ s perspective on management classes. With the overseas academic experience, I target real estate manager role in architectural or real estate companies in tier 1 cities in China. In such an intense and challenging working environment, I will have the best chance to grow fast. In long run, I envision myself leading a professional team with fresh ideas to facilitate the innovation of city planning in modern Chinese cities.
