Dear Brothers,

I am delighted to inform you that the Fraternity has accepted an invitation from the University of Arizona to rejoin the university’s Fraternity and Sorority community by recolonizing our historic Epsilon Alpha Chapter, beginning in the fall of 2019. In only a few months, we will return to Tucson and reignite a proud Sigma Nu tradition over 100 years in the making.

This wonderful news is the culmination of months of discussion between the University, Sigma Nu Fraternity Headquarters, Epsilon Alpha Chapter alumni leaders, and dedicated alumni like you.

Moving forward, Project Manager Tre Nelson (Northwestern State), Alumni Advisory Board Chairman Jason Turetzky, and myself will work closely with the Epsilon Alpha alumni leaders, University of Arizona staff, and student leaders to finalize and execute our recolonization plan. Thanks to the combined efforts of the Headquarters staff and the Office of Sorority & Fraternity Life leadership team, we have already begun much of this work. That said, the success of this project depends heavily on the continued support of alumni like you.

Sigma Nu has a deep and rich history in the State of Arizona, specifically the Epsilon Alpha chapter. Sigma Nu at the University of Arizona has created leaders since its inception, with many volunteering countless years to the Legion of Honor.

Sigma Nu Headquarters and Epsilon Alpha alumni are considering a potential recolonization of Epsilon Alpha in the upcoming academic year. Over the past 24 months, board members of the McKale-Salmon Trust and Headquarters professionals have been evaluating key metrics regarding recolonization. A key component to the recolonization process and longevity is alumni involvement in each phase of the process. Alumni are needed to advise collegiate members and develop the Epsilon Alpha Alumni Chapter/Association. As the process begins, more information and opportunities about involvement will be announced.

Sigma Nu is hosting a small reception and informational meeting in conjunction with Homecoming activities. You will have an opportunity to reconnect with other Sigma Nus and learn about Sigma Nu’s expansion process. Fellow Epsilon Alpha brothers will be present, and other Sigma Nu alumni who live in Tucson. Please join us as we work together to restore the Epsilon Alpha chapter. Your time and talents will be needed should recolonization efforts begin soon!

Two hot ticket items needed to bring the chapter back are consistent alumni involvement and a plan for housing.

While there has been a great deal of support offered by Epsilon Alpha alumni from all over the country, there is a need to develop a stronghold in the Tucson/Phoenix area with multiple alumni taking on leadership roles. Homecoming has, once again, become a staple that continues to be built upon; however, there needs to be additional opportunities (like a spring gathering) for alumni to come together. The purpose for this is to develop a pool of alumni who form an Alumni Advisory Board of eight to twelve men. This board will directly advise colony officers once a recolonization has taken place. The key to start is leadership by a few alumni willing to take some responsibility to ensure future success.

The need for a plan regarding future housing is both a short and long-term goal. This does not mean the immediate need for a capital campaign to raise funding, but it means having alumni maintain communication with the university while looking into options. A year following a recolonization there should be a  common living arrangement. This could be as simple as renting a house around campus for the colony leadership and executive board meetings. Or, it could be working with the university to secure a floor of a residence hall that would include meeting space. The university understands the need for additional Greek housing and is working to implement a plan in the near future.

What this boils down to is the need for several alumni to work a few immediate positions of the Alumni Advisory Board to establish what will become a larger group in the future.

Our hope is that this website will be able to provide all the necessary information to all alumni (and current members) of Sigma Nu Fraternity’s Epsilon Alpha Chapter.

As you may have heard, the chapter voluntarily relinquished it’s charter in 2009 for the inability to attract and retain new members. It is sad to think about all the friendships forged and the history lived while the chapter was active, dating back to 1918.

Josh Green Epsilon Alpha Alumnus (EA1344) and Director of Expansion and Recruitment for Sigma Nu National has gotten some footwork done with Nationals and they have laid out a path for us to recolonize Epsilon Alpha.

The first step that needs to be accomplished is a sturdy foundation of Alumni support and involvement. This includes the creation of an Almuni Advisory Board and their participation in the recolonization and recruitment of new members. We truly need as much alumni support and involvement as possible – if you are willing, and interested, please follow this blog for further updates from Josh Green, Sigma Nu, and other alumni as well as contact us so we can update your information to keep you better informed.
