Celebrating Eid al-Fitr and Supporting Our Partners

As Muslims around the world celebrated the joyous festival of Eid al-Fitr, marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan, Biscayne Hospitality took the opportunity to extend its support and appreciation to its valued factory partners in Indonesia, which is 87% Muslim.

Eid al-Fitr is an important holiday and a time of gratitude, togetherness, and sharing blessings with loved ones. In keeping with this spirit, Biscayne Hospitality distributed care packages containing essential supplies and rice to employees of its partner factories in Indonesia.

This year, the company provided over 1,700 care packages to workers and their families, ensuring they had the necessary provisions to celebrate the festival comfortably. The packages included staple food items, personal care products, and other essential goods, alleviating some of the financial burden during this festive period.

Our factory partners in Indonesia are an integral part of our success. We believe in fostering strong relationships built on mutual respect and support. By providing these care packages on their national holiday, we aim to express our gratitude for their hard work and dedication throughout the year.

The care package initiative is part of Biscayne Hospitality’s commitment to corporate social responsibility and ensuring the well-being of its extended workforce. The company recognizes the importance of cultural celebrations and strives to create an inclusive and supportive environment for all its partners.

Despite the state of the world right now, we would like to continue our blog series highlighting the amazing culture in Indonesia and the work that our team accomplishes there. Our overseas team truly is the foundation of our business.

This month, we had the pleasure to talk with Ardian Putra. Ardian is our Lead Production Engineer, and has been with Biscayne since 2016. In this position, Ardian works with the Project Management team to discuss client spec drawings with the factory to make shop drawings, work with designers regarding CADs, review pre-production samples and work with the QC team to develop assembly instructions for the furniture.

Through our conversation, Ardian talks about how the experience of working directly with Biscayne cannot be found anywhere else around Indonesia.

Ardian wanted to highlight the gratitude and appreciation shown to all members of the factory by Biscayne Hospitality. “Here in the factories of Indonesia, it is very rare to talk with an USA office rather than an order confirmation. When working with Biscayne, we hear from them very constant and are always thanked and always told how good our work was. That is something factories are not used to around here and makes the working with Biscayne so enjoyable,” said Putra.

Additionally, Ardian explained how the community is super close, spending most of their waking hours together, sharing meals, and the children of the community grow up together both in school and outside playing games like badminton and volleyball. Because of this Ardian said, “When a project comes through the community it becomes a big deal and everyone wants to work on the project.”

Ardian later went on to talk about how Biscayne’s gratitude allows for the factory to be much more family-oriented. The appreciation that Biscayne Hospitality has shown the factory team has created a sense of unification. Ardian describes how the factory enjoys breakfast together every Tuesday after the morning meeting, and how many of the team members plan breaks together just to ensure they can have conversation. To sum it up Ardian says, “My favorite part about working with Biscayne Hospitality is they always think the positive way to work and how the team is appreciating and servicing one and each other, not only servicing the client.”

Javed Bhaghani, Biscayne Hospitality’s President, understands that showing gratitude to our Indonesia factories is essential, because “They are the foundation to our success. That’s why every year Biscayne utilizes a three-pronged approach to give back to our team-members by providing 250 school scholarships to the children of our Indonesia team, supporting the G.I.R.L. Project, which helps over 150 young entrepreneurs start their business, and donating 10,000 pounds of rice to the workers and their families of our factories during Ramadan. Making sure that our employees are taken care of both mentally and physically goes so much further than to ensure the quality of our products but rather to ensure the quality of their well-being,” says Bhaghani.

Thank you Ardian for your time and insight into the culture of working in Indonesia. Biscayne cannot wait to continue our blog series and share more testimonials into understanding our business and team-members in greater detail.

Creating custom furniture involves a cascading series of actions, each tied to the action that came before it, like a climbing rope with helpful knots placed at even intervals.biscayne hospitality process

After the sales team has made its calculations, the design, production, and logistics departments rise into place, one by one, as focus moves along the process. And even though installation on site is the last step in that process, planning for it early is vital to a smooth experience.

Preparing the installation should start towards the beginning of a project and not be left as an afterthought as production winds down. The new furniture will have already journeyed a long distance; thought must be given to where the new (still-packaged) furniture must navigate to get to its final destination. Starting with street access to the hotel and continuing with twists in the hallways, narrow doorways, tight corners, and elevator access, the furniture has yet to complete its voyage.

Measuring hallway widths and gathering elevator specs, and sharing those with Biscayne’s project team, will result in less damage to caseloads. Take it a step further by using a shipping matrix and adding a sidemark with specified room numbers on the sales order; this way our factories can apply tags as soon as each item is completed; those labels will be a tremendous help when the install team is trying to locate and match the furniture correctly to its room.

When installation is not part of the plan from the beginning, hotels can incur expensive mistakes. Biscayne Hospitality was tasked with producing and installing a very large wardrobe. We received the elevator dimensions early and even went so far as to make a mock elevator at the factory to be certain the wardrobe would fit. Unfortunately, by the time the piece was ready to install, the elevator specs had changed… but no one had informed the production team. The solution involved a crane lift, an open window, and a very large, very unnecessary financial cost.

Biscayne Hospitality has high-level expertise when it comes to securing products for delivery. We ask our clients to help us by preparing for installation early in the process, so we can discuss creating knock-down construction when necessary or even meet with the contracted installation team. Biscayne will always provide assembly instructions and, depending on the scope of the project, is prepared to send an experienced team member to ensure our deliverables are being installed as expected. Because we all have the same goals: an efficient, hiccup-free installation.

In 1919, William Wrigley Jr. (yep, of Wrigley Gum and Chicago Cubs fame) fell in love with Catalina Island off Los Angeles. He was so taken with the beautiful island that he bought it Vintage hotel atwaterand immediately made improvements to the public utilities, added steamships, expanded the greenery, and built Hotel Atwater, which opened its doors in 1920. This year, the property is not only celebrating its recent renovation, it also is celebrating its 100th birthday.

Biscayne Hospitality was fortunate to be involved in the 2019 renovation of the hotel’s interior. Led by Erin Wallin, Interior Designer, the project also featured collaboration among Geoff and Alison Wrigley Rusack, the visionary owners of the Catalina Island Company, design director Hector Gonzalez, and interior designer Mari Peralez. The team wanted Hotel Atwater to evoke the spirit of its namesake Helen Atwater Wrigley, who was Alison’s grandmother and the daughter-in-law of William Wrigley, Jr.

hotel atwater lobby

The entire hotel is inspired by the Art Deco age from the ‘20s infused with a beachy, Catalina vibe. The design team incorporated this theme into all of the spaces. In the lobby is a large communal table with seating for eight. It has faux bamboo legs under rose and green marble sourced from France and is complemented by brushed cane-back chairs.

The property’s 95 rooms were built in the 1920s so they are similar in size to European or New York hotel rooms. The design team sought out those locations for ideas and were inspired by European hotels for the smallest room type, the standard queen. Previously, the most common complaint hotel staff received was about the inefficient bathrooms.

As part of the renovation, the team streamlined the construction to make more efficient use of the entire space of each bathroom. This meant moving part the vanity into the room, thus reducing the size of bathroom to a water closet. Biscayne Hospitality and the Catalina Island Company design team collaborated to construct a vanity with glass panels and floating mirrors that serve as decorative elements while visually opening up the entire room to make it feel more spacious. “We found a lot of creative ways to make better use of the space we had to work with,” said Gonzalez. “I think the results speak for themselves.”

hotel atwater bedroom

To brighten the room, the design team focused on adding natural and artificial light. The vanity has built-in pendants plus an overhead spotlight. The back side of vanity has a mirror that reflects natural light. Guests will also notice that the rooms are loaded with other mirrors and electrical outlets. “Our design took into account how different guests will use the rooms, including bachelorette parties and wedding parties,” said Wallin, the project’s design manager.

Another new addition is the custom wardrobe, which doubles as a closet and kitchenette. Throughout the year, Hotel Atwater hosts everyone from island adventurers to guests of the Conservancy Ball, so the wardrobe had to accommodate everything from wet suits to ballgowns.

Even the desk has unique features and proportions that you won’t find on a stock piece. The Biscayne Hospitality team adjusted the size of the drawers, added a luggage rack, and built a nesting table on casters that can be pulled out for more table space.

In addition to the opportunity to design and construct furniture for unique spaces, Biscayne Hospitality was presented with the challenge of delivering furniture to an island property. Our team, including our manufacturing manager, visited the property on multiple occasions to ensure that we understood the field site. Then, we engineered our products around those challenges.

The small room types required that we further consider how to fit the furniture through small spaces, including moving pieces down narrow hallways, into elevators, and upstairs. Finally, the glass mirrors were a complicated item that had to be designed for on-site assembly.

Planning a getaway this year? Consider Hotel Atwater on beautiful Catalina Island in California. While every room offers an exceptional guest experience, Wallin recommends Suite 344, with its amazing views and stunning bathroom.

At Biscayne Hospitality, we ask our customers and partners to “Trust Us To Deliver For You.” Focusing on core values of providing high-quality products, great service and on-time delivery, our production teams in Indonesia are the starting point for our ability to achieve those goals.

Over the next few months, we will be taking the opportunity to speak with our partners in Indonesia about what life is like on the front lines and take a look at the daily lives of those who take pride in making the hand-crafted furniture that we proudly deliver to our customers.

daniel gable headshotOur first interview is with Daniel Gable, our Director of Global Manufacturing. Daniel has spent 9 years in Indonesia and over 6 years in production with Biscayne Hospitality; he shares how the factories are immediately integrated into our relationship-based culture.

Daniel focuses our conversation on how the closeness of our partner factory workers is immediately noticeable upon visiting. With roughly 300 employees per factory, you can see the hands-on daily activities that require many teams to unite to ensure we manufacture top-quality furniture year-round. From the start of the day entering the factory gates by motorcycle, the break time coffee chit chat, lunch time prayer and resting together, to supporting each other in the homes nearby.

In 2012, our President, Javed Bhaghani, founded the Biscayne Hospitality Foundation whose mission is to help educate children in the countries where Biscayne does business. One aspect of this endeavor is providing scholarship funds to children of the factory employees. As Daniel reminisces on the culture in Indonesia, he speaks of this yearly tradition: “I have hundreds of stories, but none stick out more than giving back to our communities with school scholarships to hundreds of kids. Witnessing the appreciation among the faces of our team members and their families is amazing and having the kids thank their families for their hard work is something very special.” says Daniel.

Giving back to the team members who work day in and day is at the top of our priorities. “From Biscayne production to the factory partners we are committing more than just time to the creating high quality products and relationships. We are assuring our best attributes are going into our products.” says Daniel.

As said by Biscayne President Javed Bhaghani, “We believe that when our business has success, then everyone involved finds success. Success for a business is not just in numbers or for owners but rather for all team members, starting with our factory team members and their families.”

We thank Daniel for his time spent describing the culture and family that is found in Indonesia. As mentioned in the beginning of the article, we look forward to sharing more stories with you as you get to know our valued team members.

This Giving Tuesday, those of us at Biscayne Hospitality are proud to reflect on our commitment to supporting the communities around us.

Through our partnership with Plan USA, we have provided scholarships for 250 students in Indonesia to attend school. We have donated over 10,000 pounds of rice to the families who work in our factories. We support an entrepreneurship program for young adults looking to start their own businesses.

In the San Diego area, we are committed to continuing our support for local organizations, such as Junior Achievement, promoting workforce readiness and independence.

As we look to a new year, we are excited about the partnerships we are building in the San Diego community. As you may have seen via our social media, we are working with Habitat for Humanity not just in San Diego, but across the nation to help provide furniture for the families who are fortunate enough to move into a Habitat home. We are also working with local organizations to develop programs to tackle the homeless issue. We will be coordinating with hotels to take their old furniture and donate those pieces to homeless shelters in the area.

We believe that our business success is everyone’s success. We look forward to sharing the wealth with our team, our factories, our partners and our community.
