Some of these changes are direct connections like hotter summers contributing to droughts and wildfires or to an increase in hurricanes, flooding, and sea level rise. Other connections to climate change are less readily apparent but not less significant, such as increases in toxic algae outbreaks or parasites like ticks and mosquitoes that each can put local communities, pets, and wildlife at a greater risk. Even summer pastimes like baseball are being affected by climate change both on and off the field.
This report chronicles the latest scientific findings on these issues and recent developments in the fight against climate change and how we can engage on these issues to save our summers now and for future generations.
Ticks are arachnids, like spiders, and are pests that outdoor enthusiasts rightfully try to avoid. Climate change is influencing ticks, the survival of their hosts (such as deer and moose), and the bacterium that cause the diseases they carry, such as Lyme disease. Although scientists are currently studying the complex ways in which temperature, humidity, and precipitation influence the spread of tick-borne illnesses, some trends have been discovered:
Only a few species of tick actually bite and transmit disease to people. Of these, different species transmit different diseases. According to the Center for Disease Control, tick borne diseases have more than doubled in 13 years (between 2004 and 2016). Ticks were also responsible for 77 percent of all vector borne disease reports (fleas, mosquitos, ticks, etc.). The most prevalent disease carried by ticks was Lyme disease, which accounts for 82 percent of all tick borne cases. However, spotted fever and other diseases are also on the rise.
Many people assume that city living protects them from outdoor pests like ticks, but in a changing world this is no longer the case. In New England and the Northeast, white-footed mice serve as the primary host of blacklegged ticks. The rodents occupy more urban and suburban landscapes as their habitat shrinks from development and their populations grow as a result of climate change. City parks offer a safe home for these rodents, as the parks are often absent of predators like foxes.
As cities infringe more on their habitat, and their range expands, the mice carry ticks into urban and suburban habitats. And Lyme disease. Lyme disease, caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, can be a serious illness if not identified quickly and treated with anti-biotics. Infected individuals will see a rash around the bite area that looks like a bullseye. If treated quickly, Lyme disease can be often be avoided. But for a small subset of the population antibiotics do not work, and if the bite is not detected, Lyme disease can turn into a debilitating illness that can cause joint stiffness, brain inflammation, and nerve pain. Usually, ticks must be attached for 36-48 hours before they can transmit the disease, so early detection and removal is critical for preventing infection.
Some wildlife are actually unsung heroes when it comes to preventing the spread of tick-borne diseases. The opossum, the only marsupial in the United States, is one example of this.

Because possums are so good at grooming and killing ticks, they help keep tick populations under control and reduce the risk of people being bit.
Further, some species, such as the Western fence lizard, have the ability to neutralize Lyme disease when infected ticks bite them. Lyme disease is now the most common vector borne disease in the United States, making it a big problem for outdoor lovers. The Center for Disease Control estimates that about 300,000 Americans get Lyme disease each year, but only about 35,000 diagnoses are reported.
Americans have a responsibility to defend their outdoor heritage from the threat of climate change. There are ways to protect ourselves from the pests that climate change is helping to proliferate. Ticks should not stop you from enjoying activities like camping, hiking, and playing outdoors – but make sure to take steps to prevent tick bites. Also, we must take action as a nation to combat the root of the problem – carbon pollution. It is critical for Congress to take action and enact federal climate policy.
One of the most cost-effective, far reaching, and quickest avenues for reducing climate pollution is a federal price on carbon. A federal price on carbon could take the form of either a cap-and-trade program or a carbon tax program, or some combination of the two. By making polluters pay for what they emit, they receive a strong market signal to cut pollution. Such policies could dramatically reduce carbon emissions while generating funding for national priorities, such as protecting vulnerable people and wildlife from unavoidable climate impacts or developing wildlife-friendly renewable energy.
The report looks at the increasing population size and distribution of nuisance bugs and plants like the tiger mosquito, fire ant, poison ivy, algae, and jelly fish. As the title suggests, ticks and the diseases they carry are featured prominently.
For hunters and other people who spend lots of time in the woods, the threat of Lyme disease and other tick-borne illness can be all-too real. While 95 percent of all Lyme disease cases have come from only 13 states in the Northeast and Upper Midwest, ticks are carriers of many different diseases in many different states that include Rocky Mountain spotted fever in the Mountain West, Heartland virus in the south Midwest, and Ehrlichiosis in the South, among others. Even if they are not disease-carrying, tick bites can itch and irritate for weeks.
Ticks are just one of the many reasons hunters should be ticked off. There are numerous efforts underway to sell public land which would limit hunting access, place other values of forests before that of recreation, curtail protections to vital watery habitat, and the Senate couldn’t even pass the Bipartisan Sportsmen’s Act earlier this summer because of partisan politics that had nothing to do with our sporting traditions.
Hunters have many reasons to be ticked off, but perhaps the biggest reason to get mad and get involved is climate change’s negative consequences to fish and game habitat.
“Many sportsmen and women are already seeing the effects of climate change on their hunting and fishing opportunities, and are very concerned about what that means to the future of our sports,” said John Gale, National Wildlife Federation’s sportsmen campaigns manager. “Climate change poses an immediate and specific threat to hunting and fishing in America, challenging the traditions and values of sportsmen and women, our respect for the land, and the legacy we leave to future generations.”
Ticks and climate change have recently become a major problem for one of America’s most iconic big game animals, moose, which are revered by hunters and wildlife viewers alike. Moose are in serious decline from New Hampshire and Maine, to Minnesota and Michigan, and even into Montana and Wyoming as tick infestation, overheating and disease tied to warming temperatures leaves them weak and ill. Hunters, while not directly the cause of the decline, are the most affected because many moose seasons are being shortened and harvest tags reduced.
As the Ticked Off report points out, modeling indicates that Lyme-disease ticks will continue to move to higher latitudes and elevations over coming decades, a result of milder winters creating longer tick growing seasons.
Ken Barrett, former host of the sportsmen’s TV show “Life in the Open,” has hunted and fished all around the world and is very concerned about ticks, Lyme disease, and what that means for the future.
“As a boy growing up in the Hudson River Valley, there were few kids who were in the woods more than I was, and I don’t remember ever once finding a tick as a child. Then we had this explosion of deer ticks,” Barrett says in the Ticked Off report. “I know many families are now not letting their children go in the woods because of the concern of Lyme disease. If we don’t let children play in the woods and connect with nature, I think we are really going to be in trouble.”
The Lyme disease threat is so worrisome in the Northeast, that some New England towns and counties are trying several innovative and controversial methods to control tick populations, including increased deer hunting seasons, deer contraceptives and pesticides.
While the colloquial name is deer tick, rodents play an equally important role in the parasite’s lifecycle, and rodents are the sole cause of the ticks being a Lyme disease carrier.
There is an ongoing scientific and social debate whether or not culling deer populations actually decreases the risk of Lyme disease. Two recent studies come to completely different conclusions. One study concludes increases in Lyme disease are frequently not correlated with deer abundance and instead coincide with range-wide declines of red fox, the main predator of Lyme-carrying rodents. While another study concludes culling deer populations to levels that reduce the potential for ticks to successfully breed should be an important component of any long-term strategy to reduce the rise of Lyme disease. The report goes on to note, “Additionally, good hunter access to deer habitat and a wide variety of (hunting) management tools (bait, unlimited tags, and incentive programs) are important components of a successful deer reduction strategy.”
For folks in the West who are seeing deer populations dramatically decline — as outlined in another new NWF report, “Legacy in the Crosshairs: ‘Colorado’s Mule-Deer Factory’ on the Decline” — the thought of culling deer herds may seem abhorred. However, some Eastern states have overpopulations of deer that are creating problems for forest ecology, among other concerns.
More importantly, what’s really disconcerting and troublesome is that many hunters are ticked off about the wrong things. Recent polls show that access and conservation are just as important to sportsmen as gun rights, but several organizations would rather overly focus on gun rights, predator control, or high fence trophy hunts, effectively diverting attention away from important habitat issues.
“If you hunt and you are not ticked off, you should be,” concluded Gale. “We need to direct our collective outrage to the problems actually hurting our sporting traditions like habitat loss and fragmentation and misguided proposals to dispose of our public lands, the birthright of all Americans. We can’t play into the hands of those who would limit opportunity by reducing access and hurting efforts to conserve fish and game habitat. We are obligated to future generations to take a stand by advocating for clean water, access and opportunity on public lands, and addressing threats like climate change that are already impacting fish and wildlife habitat.”
No, this tale is not one about the make-believe vampires so prevalent in our popular culture—this tale is far more insidious and oh, so very real. These creatures are not of myth or legend, but they are creepy crawly critters that haunt your worst nightmares. They live off the blood of other animals and grow more massive with each drop. They can attack en masse and leave an unsuspecting host anemic, drained and even dead. These terrible creatures of the netherworld are found across the country in growing numbers and can be as close as your own back door. Many species carry an often fatal disease in their bite, while others simply by virtue of their own demands can leave animals ailing.
Often little bigger than the tip of your pen, these small arachnids can be carriers of Lyme disease, Q fever, Colorado tick fever, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, African tick bite fever, tularemia, tick-borne relapsing fever, babesiosis, ehrlichiosis, Tick paralysis, tick-borne meningoencephalitis, and bovine anaplasmosis. If you hadn’t guessed it by now, this dreaded creature is none other than: the tick.
This particular tick does not carry the dreaded Lyme disease and feeds mainly on large animals in the deer family like moose and elk during its short active season generally attaching to their hosts in October and feasting until March or April. Their numbers have been on the rise due to milder winters in many areas of the country, which has been bad news for moose.
This is where the tale grows ghostly. Ticks have been identified in record numbers on infested moose. We’re not talking about a few hundred or even a few thousand—moose have been found to be infested with ticks numbering more than 100,000! An infestation of 40,000 ticks on a single moose can drain the equivalent of its total blood supply—32 liters of blood—in just a few short months. This feat of blood-sucking prowess causes many moose to lose their lives just trying to keep up with the subsequent anemia. In addition, moose that manage to survive the actual blood loss can more easily succumb to hypothermia or exposure as the ticks leave their bodies weak, their circulatory systems in overdrive and their bodies devoid of the precious layering of fur they need to keep themselves warm. This truly is the ghostliest of all side effects of the winter tick.
If you can and would like to imagine being covered head-to-foot in tick upon tick, you might imagine that it would make your skin crawl (even more than it already is) with little relief. Indeed, moose are so irritated by these unwelcome guests that they find themselves constantly scratchy and rubbing their bodies up against anything with the promise of momentary relief. All this friction causes their hair to snap off, leaving behind only the white roots and giving them a ghostly appearance.
Winter ticks are largely to blame in the disappearance of thousands of moose in New Hampshire, but other climate change beneficiaries have taken out moose populations elsewhere, like brain worms and liver flukes in Minnesota, bark beetles in British Columbia that have devastated moose habitat.
Climate change itself has brought on warmer weather which can stress moose and even cause heat exhaustion and sometimes death for these animals that thrive in colder temperatures. The true effects of a changing climate on moose and other large game animals are still largely uncertain. However, despite the lack of clarity on the specific mechanisms at play, there is little doubt about the results we are already beginning to see in populations such as moose. And though the winter tick is about as dastardly and disgusting as they come, they are not the only ones taking advantage of a changing climate for their own gain.

Today National Wildlife Federation had our first appearance on the Dr. Oz Show.
The show theme was “surviving summer” and as NWF Naturalist I joined Dr. Oz’s “Dream Team” to give viewers some tips on enjoying the great outdoors this summer while avoiding getting bitten or stung by some of the insects and other critters that sometimes “bug” us.
Specifically, we talked about bees, wasps, mosquitoes and ticks. If you missed it, here’s a run-down of what I talked about in the segment.
Keep Perspective
The first thing is to put things in perspective. You have far more to worry about healthwise from constantly cooping your family up indoors and being sedentary, or from spraying toxic chemicals everywhere, than you ever would from the potential of being stung or bitten by insects or ticks.
Remember, these are important animals. Bees, some wasps and to a degree mosquitoes are important pollinators–two thirds of all the food we eat is the result of animal pollinators (mostly bees); so no insects means no food.
One more bit of perspective: there are over 4,000 bee species in North America (the honey bee is an import from Europe), the majority of which are solitary and don’t sting, and all of which pollinate wild plants that other wildlife rely on for food.
Remember this next time you are tempted to squash or spray a bee when you’re outside.
Avoiding Stings
Now, for the tips on avoiding getting stung by bees and wasps. It’s literally about just staying out of their way. The best way to ensure getting stung by a bee or wasp is to swat at it. These animals don’t want to sting you. Bees die when they sting. If you threaten them, however, they are sure to sting you. If you leave them along, they won’t. It’s pretty simple.
Many wasp species are omnivorous and will try to snatch a bite of your food if you’re eating outside, so simply cover your food until it’s time to eat to minimize this.
Avoiding Mosquito Bites
In terms of avoiding mosquito bites, first and foremost you want to eliminate standing stagnant water, where the insects lay their eggs and which they use as a nursery for their aquatic larvae. Some mosquito species can breed in as little as an inch of water, so check your yard thoroughly. Drainage dishes under flower pots, toys and play equipment, debris piles, and the biggie, clogged gutters that hold standing water, should all be thoroughly drained.
Mosquito larvae take five to seven days to complete metamorphosis into winged adults, so empty birdbaths every few days and fill with fresh water (something you should do anyway so the birds have clean water) and if you have a water garden, use a pump to keep the water surface moving and it will minimize any mosquito breeding.
If you choose to use repellants, formulas with up to 30% DEET have been shown to be effective, just don’t get it in your eyes or mouth and wash it off when you go indoors. If you don’t like the idea of chemicals, go for a natural repellant with lemon eucalyptus, which is also effective if you apply it frequently.
Mosquitoes are weak flyers, so use fans if you’re eating outdoors and blow the buggers away. And never use a bug zapper. Traditional zappers use light to attract insects, and mosquitoes are attracted primarily by the chemical and moisture trails exuded by their victims–not light. Bug zappers typically kill non-target insects.
Avoiding Ticks
Of all the animals featured on the Dr. Oz Show segment, ticks are probably the one you need to worry most about, simply because they can and do transmit diseases such as Lyme and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever to people.
The first thing is to avoid these tiny arachnids (ticks aren’t insects but are related to spiders). If you live a tick-heavy area, avoid walking through tall, grassy vegetation. Ticks wait at the tops of plant stems and latch on to hosts as they walk by (they don’t drop out of trees). Wear long sleeves and tuck your pants into your shoes. Again, DEET-based sprays can be effective repellents.
Most importantly, make it a habit to regular check for ticks after you or your kids have been outside. Teach your kids to check themselves. Some species are very tiny so be thorough.
If you find a tick, remove it immediately. NEVER douse it with vaseline or alcohol and don’t try to burn it off. These methods will kill the tick but also cause it to regurgitate into the open wound, making it more likely to spread disease.
Instead, simply pluck the tick out with tweezers or just your fingers, and then burn it. Don’t worry if the head breaks off, it won’t burrow further into your flesh or grow a new tick, contrary to urban legend. Just disinfect the bite and monitor it. If the bite gets irritated, and especially if a red bulls-eye rash appears, go immediately to a doctor.
Most tick born illnesses are easily treated if they are caught early.

Lyme disease is a bacterial infection that you can get from being bitten by an infected tick. Lyme disease is carried by the black-legged tick, also known as the dear tick. These ticks are very small, about the size of a sesame seed, and are usually found in wooded areas or areas with tall grasses, especially alongside trails. In the U.S., most infected ticks live in the Northeast, the upper Midwest, and the West Coast. The disease is named after Lyme, Connecticut, which is the town where it was discovered.
The best way to prevent Lyme disease is to prevent ticks from feasting on you. During tick season or in areas where ticks are likely to be found, follow these simple precautions:
Ticks are common, so it’s a good idea to check for ticks every day when working or playing outside, especially during the warmer months. Check your skin carefully for ticks and have someone else check you, too. Check your kids and pets, as well.
What looks like a speck of dirt or new freckle may be a sneaky little tick! Look especially closely:
Remove the tick by grabbing it with a pair of fine-tipped tweezers as close to your skin as possible and pulling it straight out. Don’t squeeze or crush it. The mouth-parts may stay attached, but these don’t transmit Lyme disease. Wash the bite area and your hands with rubbing alcohol, an iodine scrub, or soap and water. Keep an eye on the area and your skin for a few months. If you notice a rash, contact your doctor.
Don’t try folklore remedies such as “painting” the tick with nail polish or petroleum jelly, or using a hot match to make the tick detach from the skin. The goal is to remove the tick as quickly as possible rather than waiting for it to detach.
A classic sign of Lyme disease is a rash in the shape of a bull’s eye. This may show up 3 to 30 days after being bitten at the site of the bite. A rash, however, may not always appear. Other early symptoms of Lyme disease can include:
These symptoms are similar to the flu, as well as to lots of other ailments, so it can be difficult to know if you have Lyme disease, especially if you never noticed the tick bite.
If you think you might have been bitten by a tick and may have Lyme disease, talk to your doctor immediately. Since Lyme disease is a bacterial infection, it’s commonly treated with antibiotics. The earlier the treatment is started, the more effective it will be. The majority of people with this disease recover completely with appropriate treatment.
The number of cases of Lyme disease is increasing, and if not treated, in some cases it can lead to health problems such as joint swelling or nervous system disorders. Research is currently underway to find out more about the bacterium that causes Lyme disease, to develop better methods to detect and treat Lyme disease, and to develop a vaccine against it.
