Cats are crepuscular, meaning they are most active at dusk and dawn.

All curled up in a little ball in a sunny spot, or completely stretched out in a cool place, cats have perfected the ‘catnap’ to a T. They don’t have a care in the world and couldn’t care less whether you still want to make your bed or wash the blanket they’re lying on. As long as your cat is comfortable and feels safe, she will sleep wherever she wants to, and it might not be on the expensive bed that you bought her last summer.  

Most cats spend the bulk of their days sleeping, and for good reason. It is important that you don’t interrupt her while she is snoozing, for more reasons than just having a grumpy cat around. This is what you need to know about your cat’s sleeping habits.  

MUST SLEEP  

Yes, cats are naturally programmed to sleep for many hours during the day. And they also have to sleep during the day to preserve their energy for their evening escapades. Their ancestors had to hunt at dusk and dawn, sometimes even during the night, when their prey was roaming around. Although cats have been domesticated for many years, they still have a natural instinct to hunt, especially at dusk and dawn. 

MUST SLEEP HERE  

Don’t expect your cat to sleep where you want her to. She will find a comfortable spot where she feels safe, whether it is on your lap or on your bed.

Cats sleep anywhere between 12 and 20 hours a day, with kittens and senior cats sleeping more than adult cats. You might find that, if your cat wants to sleep now, then that is what will happen – even if it is in the weirdest spot. 

DO NOT DISTURB!  

Your cat might go back to sleep immediately after you’ve disturbed her, but generally it is not a good idea to wake her up, especially if she’s still a kitten. Like humans, when your cat sleeps, she builds up her immune system. Sleep also helps to keep her bones healthy and relaxes and restores tired muscles (from all that hunting!). But, if you feel that your cat is sleeping more than normal, take her to the vet for a check-up. 

FAST ASLEEP  

Although she sleeps for so many hours in a day, not all of it is in a deep sleep. Her levels of sleep will change – from a deep sleep to lighter sleep. And yes, cats also dream.

PARTY TIME  

Just as quickly as she can fall asleep, she can also wake up. She will most probably yawn, stretch, look around and then be ready for whatever adventure awaits her. As a cat owner, you will have to accept that, and love her for her ability to sleep anywhere, anytime, for however long she wants. 

SAFE AND SECURE

If your cat sleeps on top of or next to you, it probably means that she:

• Trusts you
• Loves you
• Thinks you’re comfortable 
• Feels safe with you
• Wants to stay warm

SLEEPING POSITIONS  

• Sleeping all curled up is one of the most common positions cats sleep in. She will sleep this way when she feels cold or insecure. 

• When your cat sleeps with her belly up, it means that she’s feeling safe and secure and trusts you and her surroundings fully. 

• There’s no real reason why your cat sleeps like a contortionist, other than she’s feeling relaxed and is comfortable in that position. 

• Covering her eyes with her paws while she is sleeping most probably means that she doesn’t want to be disturbed. 

• Another common sleeping position for a content cat is to simply sleep on her side. She is obviously relaxed and could be in a deep sleep or having a quick catnap.

When summer gets unbearably hot, daily walks aren’t always safe or comfortable for you and your dog. Luckily, keeping them busy and mentally enriched indoors is just as rewarding. Enrichment games encourage natural instincts like exploring, sniffing and problem-solving.

1. Muffin tin and ball game
An easy DIY game that takes five minutes to set up. By placing treats in a muffin tin with balls covering the treats, your dog will have to use critical thinking to uncover each treat. This encourages their problem-solving and foraging skills.

2. Treat towel challenge
Simply spread some treats on a towel and roll or loosely tie it. Your pup will then use their sense of smell and focus to find and uncover the treats. Scent-based activities are mentally stimulating and help relieve boredom.

3. Snuffle mat
A snuffle mat can be bought or made at home. By searching for the food hidden within the fabric strips, the snuffle mat encourages natural foraging behaviour. Sniffing games like these promote relaxation and mental wellbeing.

4. Puzzle feeder toys
A puzzle toy will require your dog to slide or lift compartments to access food. This feeding enrichment enhances learning and can slow down fast eaters.

5. DIY dig box
Fill a shallow box with dog-safe items like paper or strips of material and hide some treats inside. This allows your dog to safely explore and dig, satisfying their natural instincts while staying indoors.

Dogs naturally love the outdoors, but mental enrichment games will go a long way in keeping your dog happy, occupied and cool indoors during heat waves. Have fun!

1. They’re animals – not plants.

Even though they don’t move around, sea sponges are animals. They don’t photosynthesise and must get food from their environment. 

2. They’ve been around forever. 

Sponges are among the oldest animal groups on Earth, with fossils dating back over 500 million years – long before dinosaurs existed. 

3. No brain, no problem.

Sponges have no brain, nerves or muscles. Instead, they rely on specialised cells that work together to keep them alive. 

4. They eat by filtering water.

A single sponge can filter thousands of litres of seawater a day, trapping tiny food particles like bacteria and algae. No Krabby Patties for them! 

5. Water flows through them constantly.

Sponges have lots of tiny holes that pull water in, and a larger opening where the filtered water flows out – like a living pump. 

6. Some sponges are carnivorous.

Believe it or not, a few deep-sea sponges trap and digest small crustaceans instead of filtering food from water. 

7. They can regenerate amazingly well.

If a sponge is broken into pieces, each piece can grow into a whole new sponge under the right conditions. 

8. They come in wild shapes and colours.

From bright yellows and purples to tubes, fans and barrels, sponges are some of the most colourful animals on coral reefs. 

9. They’re chemical geniuses. 

Sponges produce powerful chemicals to defend themselves. Some of these compounds are being studied for antibiotics and cancer treatments.

10. They help keep oceans healthy.

By filtering water and recycling nutrients, sponges play a key role in maintaining clean, balanced marine ecosystems. 

Next time you spot a sponge underwater, remember: you’re looking at one of the ocean’s oldest and cleverest survivors.

1. They have built-in sunglasses

Those bold black ‘tear marks’ aren’t just for dramatic effect. They’re made of dark pigment that absorbs sunlight, reducing glare and helping cheetahs see clearly during midday hunts, something few predators attempt.

2. Faster than a Ferrari, but only for 20–30 seconds

A cheetah can accelerate from 0 to 120 km/h faster than a sports car, but it can only maintain that pace for half a minute. Afterward, its temperature skyrockets and it collapses to recover. This is a reminder of how physically extreme each chase is.

3. Permanent running spikes

Unlike lions or leopards, cheetahs can’t fully retract their claws. They function like sprinting spikes, giving traction during high-speed pursuits. Even the paw pads have a tough ridge designed for grip.

4. They chirp, not roar

Cheetahs cannot roar due to the structure of their larynx. Instead, they ‘chirp’, a high-pitched, birdlike call used between siblings, mothers and cubs, or when greeting familiar humans.

5. Heart-breaking cub survival odds

A mother cheetah can give birth to as many as nine cubs, but only one typically survives to adulthood. Predation, starvation and habitat loss make their early years incredibly dangerous.

6. Cubs are born with a punk-rock cape

Nature has provided the cubs with a unique defence. Newborn cheetahs have a long, silvery mantle of hair running down their backs, mimicking the colouring of a fierce honey badger, a natural defence that helps discourage predators.

7. No tree climbing for these cats

Those blunt, semi-retractable claws mean cheetahs are poor climbers. Instead, they use termite mounds, rocks and raised structures to scan the landscape for prey.

8. Strategy over strength

Weighing far less than lions and leopards, cheetahs rely on stealth and timing rather than brute force. They trip prey by hooking a claw behind the back leg, a precise move executed at incredible speeds.

9. One third of all cheetahs now live on farmland

Around a third of the remaining cheetah population lives outside protected areas, often near livestock. Conservation programmes, including metapopulation initiatives supported by private reserves like Lion & Safari Park, are helping reduce conflict and protect genetics.

10. A purr you feel in your chest

When relaxed and content, cheetahs produce an astonishingly loud, deep purr that can be heard across an enclosure. It’s one of the most surprisingly soothing sounds in the animal kingdom.

You have three dogs, please tell us their names and the stories of how they came to be your pets?

Daisy came into my life when I started high school. My grandfather and I walked into a pet store filled with puppies, but Daisy pressed her tiny paw against the glass when I walked by. In that moment, I knew she was meant for me. 

Trixy is my rescue girl. I found her at the SPCA, sitting all alone in a cage while every other dog had a partner. She was so skinny her head looked bigger than her body, but she had the most irresistible smile. I couldn’t leave her behind. 

Scooby’s story is the most emotional. One day, driving home, I saw people throwing stones at a tiny puppy. I stopped, asked them to hand him over, and he lay silently on my lap the whole way home. He was filthy, full of ticks, and didn’t even know how to eat from a bowl. I fed him from the floor, bathed him, treated his sores and wrapped him in love. He was so small that the collar from my Scooby-Doo teddy fit him – and that’s how he got his name. That first night, he slept on my chest with his paws on me, and he’s been by my side ever since.  

If you were to describe each of your dogs using one word, what would they be? 

• Daisy – Gentle 
• Trixy – Loving 
• Scooby – Playful 

How do you feel pets make your life better? 

They remind me to slow down, laugh at the little things and appreciate unconditional love in its purest form. No matter how tough my day has been, I know they’ve spent the whole day waiting just to see me – and that kind of love changes everything. 

You have a high-profile career, how do you handle separation from your pets when you have to travel? 

It’s the hardest part. Luckily, my parents spoil them with love and care when I’m away. And yes – I’m that person who video calls just to see their faces. But nothing compares to coming home to them. That moment is always the best feeling in the world.

If you could swap places with one of your dogs for the day, what would you want to do? And what do you think your dog would do if he/she was human for a day? 

I’d definitely swap places with Scooby. I’d love to know what goes through his mind when he does zoomies all over the house – he’s always so happy and full of energy. If he were human for a day, I think Scooby would eat absolutely everything he could find! 

Do any of your dogs have particular quirks? Any funny stories you can tell us about them? 

Daisy is terrified of balloons – birthdays are not her favourite! Ever since she was a puppy, she hides whenever she sees one. 

Trixy can’t sleep unless she’s completely buried under blankets, no matter how hot it is. When she greets you, she flops onto her back with the biggest smile and refuses to move. And she looks just like Buck the weasel from Ice Age! 

Scooby has the cutest smile – with or without teeth. He’s hilariously scared of his own shadow and absolutely loves watching TV. His favourite is The Lion King. Whenever the lions come on screen, he runs up and barks at them. 

Can you tell us in one sentence what you feel it means to be a good pet parent? 

To love with patience, protect like family, and always make sure they feel safe and loved.

1. The ‘forever young’ salamander

Axolotls never grow up in the usual way! Most amphibians (like frogs) change from babies into adults, but axolotls stay in their youthful, water-living stage for their entire lives. Scientists call this neoteny.

2. Super healing powers

Axolotls can regrow almost any body part – legs, tail, parts of their spinal cord, and even parts of their heart and brain. And they do it without leaving scars!

3. Always smiling

That little upward curve of their mouths makes axolotls look like they’re always happy. It’s one of the reasons people think they’re so adorable.

4. Pink, black, or even golden 

While the wild axolotl is usually dark brown or black with speckles, pet and lab axolotls can be albino (pale pink with red eyes), leucistic (white with black eyes), golden or even mottled.

5. Found only in one place in the wild

Wild axolotls are from Mexico, living in lakes like Lake Xochimilco. Sadly, pollution and habitat loss have made them critically endangered.

6. Big babies

They can grow pretty large compared to other salamanders – up to 30 cm long, though most are around 20–25 cm. That’s about the size of a ruler!

7. Weird breathing combo

Axolotls breathe through three different methods:

• Gills (those feathery things sticking out of their heads)
• Lungs (yes, they have lungs too)
• Skin (they can absorb oxygen through their skin)

8. Night owls

Axolotls don’t have eyelids, so they prefer to stay in darker, shady areas. They’re most active at night when they go hunting.

9. Hungry little predators

They suck in food like a vacuum! Instead of chewing, they gulp down worms, insects, small fish and anything that fits in their mouth.

10. A symbol of rebirth

In Aztec mythology, the axolotl was linked to the god Xolotl, who transformed into one to escape danger. Because of their regeneration powers, they’re seen as symbols of healing and resilience even today.

The axolotl is like nature’s mix of cute pet, science experiment and ancient legend – no wonder people around the world are fascinated by them!
