Almost every monthly plus video (which shows only two of the plus games that are available but that’s beside the point) reaches up to 90% and as low as 25% on dislikes, because of the community’s dislike of the games that are coming out.

Sony tried voting for your favorite games, but it was all just indie games. Before the PS4 came out though, there were Triple-A games on plus for the PS3, PSP, and PS Vita. So what happened? Well, from the looks of this- money happened, or lack thereof.

Insufficient funds?

The PS4 is still a young console, and it’s pushing strong, but there’s just not enough being charged for plus to get big titles on the PS4. PS3 has been out for about 10 years and PlayStation Plus came out in 2010 at $50. It already had so many games to work with. Bigger ‘existing library’ games were getting cheaper, so it was easy for them to give us the games we wanted and the value was there. PS4? Not so much, especially for the average consumer.

With that, Sony basically said ‘fine we don’t want to do this but we had no choice’ – so they’re raising the price of PlayStation Plus. It’s now raised by $10 to match the price of and Xbox Gold membership. This will go into effect this September and will hopefully bring in more of the games gamers want.

Greatness awaits those who pay.

PlayStation Store just got a massive update! One of the most exciting new additions is Galak-Z, a 2-D shooter in space…with mechs. Now shut up and take my money! But that’s not all, also releasing on PS4 are Aeternoblade, Boggle, J-Stars Victory VS (also on PS3 and Vita), Submerged, The Castle Game, and Trans-Galactic Tournament.

PlayStation is also into the second week of their summer sale! Every week PlayStation is discounting a variety of games for PS4, PS3, PS Vita, and PSP. This week features awesome games like Nidhogg, Assassin’s Creed Unity, and Danganronpa. Head on over to the PlayStation Blog for a full list of games on sale! PlayStation Plus members also get special discounts too!

PlayStation has also added a few new games to PlayStation Now. God of War, Bomberman Ultra, The Last Guy, Dynasty Warriors 8, and MX-ATV join the subscription library. If you just rent games on PlayStation Now, God of War, Bomberman Ultra, The Last Guy, Sidescroller, and Trash Panic are now available.

Those were just the games! PlayStation has also updated their videos, music, and added content on Apps like HBO Go and Netflix. Seriously, August is starting to look like an awesome month for the PlayStation Nation.

Tron Bonne is a prequel to the Mega Man Legends series and focuses not on the man in blue, but on anti-hero Tron of the criminal Bonne family. Tron has become in debt to Mr. Loath for ONE MILLION zenny! Now she has to rob banks and explore ruins for loot to repay the debt and rescue her family.

A nostalgic goldmine, Tron Bonne coming to the PlayStation Store is a great move. It is also a very enjoyable game set in the awesome world of Mega Man. Unfortunately, Tron Bonne is a PS One Classic, which means it’s only available to play on PS3, PS Vita, and PSP. I hope it becomes available for PS4 in the future!

For starters, I can’t believe it’s been ten years since the PSP debuted in the US. Also, I can’t believe that we had such a ‘meh’ response to the whole anniversary thing here on BG. Sure, I know that the console wasn’t exactly a system that lit the world on fire, but it wasn’t terrible by any stretch and I really thought the team would have some great memories of the little guy.

The PSP actually had a nice lineup of solid to great titles too. It had little in the way of consistency though (I thought anyway), which was probably one of its downfalls in the Western market. It kind of seemed like months would go by without something good to play, or a ‘big’ game release to get excited about. That’s something that Sony doesn’t seem to have learned from either as the PS Vita, the PSP’s successor, has pretty much the same issue. For every good, big game release, there’s a looong wait with little to cheer about.

Even so though, to mark the occasion we remembered the little console in a group chat not too long ago. As I said, the reaction within our team was less than enthusiastic, which might say quite a bit about the PSP in and of itself.

Here’s our chat, with minimal edits, presented for your reading enjoyment:

Jason – Editor-in-Chief – Anybody have any good memories about the PSP? I just got reminded that it was the tenth anniversary of Sony’s first portable console and I thought it might be fun to chat a bit about it!

My best memories of the PSP were actually in the early days of its release. I remember being knocked over by the quality of the graphics and sound, and the games were fantastic. I remember playing the hell out of Lumines, Need for Speed, and Wipeout, like crazy, way more than my consoles at the time. When the PSOne games started to hit, I was in heaven too, and I’m pretty sure Dark Forces, FF7, and Street Fighter Alpha are still on the memory stick!

Nadia – Canadian Staff Writer – I do! I still have a PSP with loads of games in a box where I store them!  I Loved the RPGs that were available at the time and I just loved the portability that it provided!

Lisa – US PlayStation Editor – Never owned one.

Kiri – UK PlayStation Editor – I have only ever played one game on PSP, and that was Persona 3 Portable, and I loved it, it did start my love for Persona, It was one of those games I could not put down.

Jason – Just remembering now, I actually sold my PSP two or three times. I have the last one now- it’s so light it feels like I’m going to break it when I play.

Hanna – Community Manager – I remember Troy getting one just before we were married – and he took it on the flight to Hawaii. I remember some cheering character from some golf game – i think she’d shout “Cheer goes!”

Jason – I took my PSP every time I travelled and I don’t think I actually ever used it more than once or twice.

Nadia – I had a black PSP and it just stopped working, and so I got another one, and while the frame around the screen is cracked a little, it still works like a charm! it’s hardly noticeable.

One of my favourite games is Lunar Silver star harmony, and I even have monkey ball!

Troy – US Staff Writer – Yup! I second Hanna on her comment. I think it was Hots Shots Golf 2. Loved playing Disgaea 2 on it. Recall trying to use it to listen to podcasts, too.

Benj – US Staff Writer – PSP got me started with Persona 3 and that’s when I got weird with the Shin Megami Tensei universe. Good times.

Mike – Indie Editor – I wanted to get a PSP but never went through with it. I picked up the Vita very quickly. It’s been a good purchase, especially with PS Plus.

Jason – I loved Lunar on Sega CD. Easily one of my favorite RPGs of all time. Oddly enough, I bought the PSP version, but I couldn’t get into it again for some reason.

What changed your mind Mike? Was it just the PS+? Was that even around when the Vita came out?

Nadia – Lunar 2 eternal blue was also good : ) I liked the fact the title rhymes lol.

Jason – Lol yep. Great game. That was never released for the PSP was it?

Nadia – Unfortunately no.

Benj – Ohhh yeah! Lunar was awesome!

Starring Sharlto Copley (Elysium, The A-team) and Eddie Izzard (Oceans 13, My super Ex-girlfriend). Following main character Christian Walker (Copley), an ex-superhero who no longer has his powers,  helping a LA based detective work on cases involving other superheroes, known as ‘Powers’.

Powers debuts on March 10 through the PlayStation Network. On that date, the first three episodes will be available for free, while the ensuing seven will arrive one episode per week through April. The entire first season is free for PlayStation Plus subscribers, though pricing for non-members has not been announced.

Subscribers to PSN have steadily increased over the years and reached 64.0 million active users as of December 2014 and Sony wants to build a premium entertainment service for all these users. This move appears to mirror Microsoft’s move with the Xbox One to create a single, integrated entertainment system. This new nexus will include the PlayStation Store, PlayStation Plus, PlayStation Now, PlayStation Vue, PlayStation Music, and PlayStation Video.

The  integrated entertainment destination comes with some changes to various services, looking to improve and streamline your PlayStation experience. The PlayStation Store will continue to provide PlayStation players access to top quality games and video. PlayStation Plus comes with the usually benefits, but will also include “Instant Game Collection,” that allows PS Plus members full access to popular titles with no time limits or extra costs.

PlayStation Video, previously known as Video Unlimited, will still offer over 200,000 movies and TV shows over all the PlayStation platforms, Sony devices and your PC in 11 regions and countries. PlayStation Video gives users access not only access to PlayStation’s extensive catalog, but also new releases of TV shows and movies. Most have heard of the transition of Music Unlimited to PlayStation Music. For those who didn’t see our article about it, PlayStation is partnering with Spotify to bring premium music and playlists to their audience.

PlayStation Now is the new subscription game service recently launched by PlayStation. An exciting venture to bring PlayStation video games instantly to subscribers across PS4, PS3, PS Vita, Sony TVs and Blu-ray players, and select Samsung Smart TVs. The plan for PS Now is a catalog
including games from the original PlayStation to current day. For those interested, the subscription will be $19.99/month.

PlayStation Vue is that last, and certainly not least, addition to the PlayStation Network service family. A cloud-based TV streaming service combining live, on-demand, and catch-up TV content for viewing pleasure. Customization of the PS Vue is easy and users can create a watching experience that is personalized and simple. The beta took place for select PS3 and PS4 users in New York, Philadelphia, and Chicago; it will launch commercially this quarter.

All in all, PlayStation and Sony are making good changes to streamline their entertainment into the PlayStation Network. Andrew House, President and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. and Group Executive in charge of the Network Entertainment Business, is committed to bringing the best of Sony to consumers.

“We are very excited to offer our wide array of network services including games, TV, videos and music, under the PlayStation brand,” states House. “We look forward to bringing even more compelling experiences, and an unparalleled breadth and quality of digital entertainment services and content to our customers.”

 After experiencing more issues over the weekend, Sony has announced that there will be routine PSN maintenance happening on Thursday, February 12 for approximately 3.5 hours. As usual, they will use this time to “deploy a series of back-end improvements to the network.”

Here’s when you can expect the maintenance to take place:

Begins

• 9am PT/12pm ET/17:00 GMT

Ends

• 12:30pm PT/3:30pm ET/20:30 GMT

You’ll need to sign in to the PlayStation Network prior to the maintenance if you wish to play online, with PlayStation 4 owners needing to have their PS4 activated as the Primary System. Sony explained:

• PS4 Users – The PS4 must be activated as your Primary System in order to play online titles and services.
• PS3/PS Vita Users – Make sure to sign in to the network on the device(s) you plan to use during maintenance.

Here’s a reminder of what you’ll be able to use if you’ve stayed signed in:

If you’ve signed in to the network before, you will be able to play games online and access partner apps such as Netflix during this maintenance period. The PlayStation Store, PlayStation Home and Account Management will not be available during this time, and users may receive a maintenance notification when attempting to access these services.

PlayStation4 owners can look forward to the critically acclaimed strategy/action RPG Transistor developed by Supergiant Games. But wait PS4 owners, you will also get Apotheon, an action platformer set in Greek Mythology, on the same day that it is released to the PlayStation Store! These two games look incredibly fun to play and I’m personally excited to try out Transistor. PS3 owners will struggle to decide if they want to play the fun and fast Yakuza 4 or the planned and stealthy Thief. PS Vita owners will receive Rogue Legacy, an exciting rogue-lite game with a procedurally generated castle so each run is new and interesting. Vita players can also look forward to Kick and Fennick, a cute sidekick action-adventure, where your gun is more to move than to damage.

Believe it or not, we’re coming up on a year of the current generation of consoles (two if you count the Wii U). What a generation it was too as we saw countless great games hit all three major consoles and the even the handhelds, which held their own with some top notch titles even in the face of a dwindling sector of the industry.

It was such a ‘big’ generation of consoles, that it’s not exactly fading into the good night even with the PS4, Xbox One, and Wii U readily available at big box stores and GameStops everywhere. Still though, most (if not all) of the big name titles that won’t be seen on current-gen systems have made their debuts and what you see is, more or less, what you get with them at this point.

1.) Batman: Arkham City (Xbox 360) – Easily my favorite game on the 360. Everything about this game made it easy to log in the 80+ hours I have spent playing.

10.) Battle Front: Rogue Squadron (PSP) – This game was my portable go to. It was pretty lucky for me to pick up a PSP when they launched only to find out that the Battle Front series would be exclusive to the PSP for some time.

9.) Ghost Recon Advance Warfighter 2 (Xbox 360) – Hands down some of the funnest shooting action I’ve ever experienced in a game.

8.) Diablo 3 (PC) – Despite the terrible launch, terrible first year, and well…just terrible things, the recent expansion Reaper of Souls has mended this game into a gem.

7.) Civilization V (PC) – An incredibly accessible yet fiendishly addictive entry into the series. Still a staple of my playtime.

6.) Guild Wars 2 (PC) – In my opinion one of the best designed games ever. Period. This game has mechanics that spoiled me for any MMO since, showing me just how flawed the MMO genre has been.

5.) Fable 2 (Xbox 360) – Great entry into the series. ‘Nuff said.

4.) Gears of War Trilogy (Xbox 360) – It would be a crime to exclude any of these brilliant games from the list, so I included them all.

3.) Elder Scrolls: Oblivion (Xbox 360) – The game that reignited my love for the RPG. Still played to this day.

2.) Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (Xbox 360) – The pinnacle of the franchise for me.

1.) Halo 3 (Xbox 360) – In case you couldn’t tell by now, I played on the Xbox. If you wonder why I never dipped my toes into the other side, this game is that reason. It cemented my love for all things Xbox, bombastic, and plain old fun.

10.) Assassins Creed Brotherhood (PS3) – I liked the whole concept of this installment of the AC franchise. The fact that Desmond can finally leave Animus at any time and explore the present day, and that whilst him and his pals search to save the world from the 2012 apocalypse, Ezio is battling against the corruption in the Vatican.

9.) Batman Arkham City (PS3) – With the Arkham trilogy almost coming to a close, I like to reminisce with City more than Asylum. I feel City better represented the whole Dark Knight Theme, it was so much grittier and of course the epic and tragic death of *Spoiler* Highlight to see –>the Joker…

8.) The Walking Dead season 2 (PS3) – I really like the character development of Clem, and to be frank Lee kind of irritated me, so this season was definitely my favorite. Also the decisions you had to make were a lot more challenging at times.

7.) Lord of The Rings: War in the North (PS3) – I loved the whole co-op mode here, that made this game for me, the fact I could play with a friend to journey around middle earth an feel like I was helping the actual character from the Peter Jackson trilogy.

6.) FF13 – Lightening Returns (PS3) – I waited for this last installment like a kid waits for the end of school, and even though there was a lot of hating on it, I really enjoyed the new story of Lightening as The Saviour. I did feel let down and rushed with the abundance of side quests, but as a typical girl I liked playing dress up with all the interchangeable Schemata.

5.) DMC – Devil May Cry (PS3) – As this was my first experience of DMC, I have to say I think I played the game better not having played the others first. I did then play the rest and I still prefer this one by far, the weapons were awesome and the plot added for real passion for the characters.

4.) Assassins Creed 4: Black Flag (PS3) – Playing as a Welshman was such a great feeling, and I really did feel like it was my ancestor I was playing as. Edward’s quick wit and epic battle skills weren’t all that made this game for me though, I fell in love with so many of the characters, and yes, I cry at the ending every time.

3.) Persona 3 Portable (PSP) – The choice of male and female protag made me buy this game. But I fell in love with the whole idea of Persona. The levelling up, and the story all rolled this game to be my favourite Persona game so far. It has a unicorn for goodness sake, need I say more…

2.) Final Fantasy 13-2 (PS3) – Serah and Noel’s journey to find Lightening and stop the horrible future that lay before Noel, to take over the role of Chaos from the legendary Caius Ballad, and save all future Yeuls. All the imagery through out the game, not just the emotional cut scenes, makes for such realistic visual that you could be mistaken into thinking you were watching a CGI movie. And of course the cutie that is Mog, and cameos from Snow, Hope, Fang, Vanille and Sazh, tie this sequel right into the first game, but overall in the case, the sequel is much better.

1.) The Last Of Us (PS3) – As I reviewed the Remastered version of this recently, I’m sure a few people already know how much love I have for this game. I played this game after already watching a full walk-through on-line, and still I cried every time. The story has so much emotion attached that it just draws you in to the game, the characters and the awful situations your put in. Not only is this game beautiful in that sense but graphically it is such a lovely game to look at. I have by now played through at least 10 times, as well as spent many nights raging on the epic multi player. For me, The Last Of Us is the game of the last generation, no game can compare in game play, or plot.

1.) Mass Effect 2 (PC) – BioWare’s second installment of the mass effect space drama. ME2 brought the franchise’s storytelling to another level and captured the hearts of many gamers. The second installment also included a more refined version of gameplay from its predecessor.

10.) Metro: Last Light (Multi) – The survival aspects of Metro 2033 were just a little too constricting for me (something that Metro Redux ‘fixes’), but Last Light’s heavier emphasis on action hit the spot. Add a dark storyline and some very interesting locales and you’ve got one of the best shooters on consoles or the PC.

9.) Transformers: War for Cybertron/Fall of Cybertron – I’m a huge Transformers fan and have been since the ’80s, so a serious take on the characters and the fantastic gameplay that High Moon cooked up absolutely floored me. On par with the comics and not just better than the movies- lightyears ahead of them.

8.) New Super Mario Bros (Wii) – This gem updated the classic Super Mario formula for the modern age. No, you won’t find any 3D graphics here, but you will find platforming perfection and one of the best looking (and at times toughest!) Mario games ever.

7.) Grand Theft Auto IV (Multi) – Often looked down on, GTAIV was a revelation for me and the only GTA that I went nuts for other than Vice City and GTAV. I thought Nico was a terrific character and his story was compelling in every way. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that there’s so much of real-life NYC in it either. I had tons of “I know where that is!” moments while driving around Liberty City.

6.) Assassin’s Creed (Multi) – The original AC got me hooked on the franchise right up till Revelations with its mixture of action, intrigue, and historical settings. It may have fallen short in a few places, but when it was good, it was very good. Plus, the story (which is still sort of Ancient Aliens-ish) was just fantastic and created a world where you really couldn’t be overly sure what was going to happen next.

5.) Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (PS3) – I’ve enjoyed all the Uncharted games, but part 2 was a blockbuster in every way. With the characters already set and established the team at Naughty Dog crafted one of the best action/adventures you’re likely to find anywhere and on any console.

4.) Gears of War Series (Xbox 360) – Much like Martin, when it came time to pick one out of the three Gears titles to list here, I just couldn’t do it. All three Gears of War games are action masterpieces and together, weave one of the coolest and most fun tales of apocalypse in gaming. None of them are to be missed.

3.) Halo 3 (Xbox 360) – The end of the first Halo trilogy didn’t disappoint in any way. Following up on the cliffhanger ending of H2, Halo 3 hit the ground running and didn’t let up till the credits rolled. I enjoyed the heck out of Halo 4 as well, but Halo 3 was the swan song for the first big Halo universe story arc, and for that alone it’ll always have a place with me. Though the fact that it just about gets everything spot-on perfect (including the multiplayer) doesn’t hurt.

2.) Batman: Arkham Asylum (Multi) – If you’re a Batman fan, or just a comic book fan in general actually, this game is beyond golden. Arkham Asylum made licensed superhero games legitimate after being little more than shovelware for years and years. It also kicked off the Arkham series which continued with the excellent Arkham City and will soon conclude with Arkham Knight. It’s funny, because I actually think City is the better game overall, but there’s something about Asylum’s creepy setting and homages to the comics throughout that just does it for me.

1.) BioShock (Multi) – What’s to say here that hasn’t been said already? BioShock is one of the best FPS’ of all time and hands down my favorite game of the last generation. Irrational Games and creator Ken Levine got everything right here (except maybe the end boss) in a game that merged superpowers, gunplay, film noir, and horror into a melange of sights and sounds that still stands up today. In fact, there’s a brand new version of BioShock coming out for iOS devices, so it really is still quite relevant as a standalone title. Every game in this series is actually pretty phenomenal in it’s own way, but the original with Andrew Ryan, the original appearance of the failed utopia of Rapture, and that twisty, turn filled story hit the nail on the head as hard as was humanly possible.

And there you go, a peek into the minds of the staff here at BG and what we thought were the best of the best of last-gen. There’s still plenty of life in those ‘old’ consoles, with publishers releasing games on new and old hardware simultaneously, so if you skipped over one of these mean machines, it might not be the worst idea in the world to pick one up for cheap and grab a few games off our lists here.

Any one of them is sure to provide more than a few thrills, and maybe some of the genuinely best gaming experiences of all time. The Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii might be out of the spotlight now, but they’re sure not gone or forgotten.
