WE ARE NOW CREATING A WAITLIST FOR THE COOKIE DECORATING WORKSHOPS.

Waitlist registration will be taken in the order of date and time received. Those on the waitlist will be notified if there are any cancellations.

Cancellations could occur for any of the workshops -- please think about being flexible in regards to the dates and times you would like to attend.

Make something sweet this February with a cookie decorating workshop.

Selena Hunt (with Flour Girls Baking Company) will lead this workshop and show you how to decorate your own set of cookies.

Each participant will be provided with six (6) cookies and four (4) containers of colored icing -- everything needed to create cookie masterpieces. Participants might want to bring their own apron -- in case things get messy!!

Three (3) workshops will be offered, two on Saturday, February 3 from 2:00 PM -- 4:00 PM and from 4:30 PM -- 6:30 PM, and one on Sunday, February 4 from 2:00 -- 4:00 PM. Each class will be limited to 20 participants and is open to those 16 and over.

PLEASE NOTE: The Library is paying per person for the workshop and will be charged accordingly. So, please, if you have registered and find out that you will not be able to attend, let us know as soon as possible so that we can move someone from the waitlist into your slot.

Surviving the Fall: An Evening with Golden Gate Bridge Jump Survivor Kevin Hines site_admin Tue, 09/19/2023 - 1:37pm

Bossard Library and the Gallia-Jackson-Meigs ADAMH Board will host a special evening with international speaker, mental health advocate, filmmaker, author, and suicide attempt survivor, Kevin Hines.

Kevin will be sharing his inspirational story of survival and growth on Thursday, November 2, 2023 at 7:00 PM in the Gallia Academy High School Performing Arts Center (2855 Centenary Road, Gallipolis, Ohio).

At the age of 19, two years after being diagnosed with bipolar disorder, Kevin attempted to take his own life by jumping off of the Golden Gate Bridge. He is only one of 36 (less than 1% of those who jump) to have survived the fall from the bridge. Many factors contributed to his miraculous survival including a sea lion which kept him afloat until the Coast Guard arrived.

Kevin now travels the world sharing his story of hope, healing, and recovery while teaching people of all ages the art of wellness and the ability to survive pain with true resilience. Kevin's will to live and stay mentally well has inspired people worldwide. His compelling story has touched diverse, global audiences within colleges and universities, high schools, corporations, clergy, military, clinicians, health and medical communities, law enforcement organizations, and various industries. Thousands have communicated to Hines that his story helped save their lives.

Kevin believes in the power of the human spirit and in the fact that you can find the ability to live mentally well. His mantra: "Life is a gift, that is why they call it the present. Cherish it always." His motto: #BeHereTomorrow and every day after that.

In 2006, Kevin's story was featured in the acclaimed film The Bridge. In the summer of 2013, Kevin released his bestselling memoir titled Cracked Not Broken, Surviving and Thriving After a Suicide Attempt. Premiering in 2018, Suicide: The Ripple Effect, Kevin's feature-length documentary film, chronicles his personal journey and the impact his suicide attempt had on those around him and his life's work since.

This event, co-sponsored by Bossard Memorial Library and the Gallia-Jackson-Meigs ADAMH (Alcohol, Drug Addiction, and Mental Health) Board, is free and open to all.

It is time for Mayhem, Mystery, and Murder!

Join suspected murderess Lizzie Borden on Saturday, August 12, 2023 at 7:00 PM in the library's Riverside Room as she recounts her life story. Learn about her life with her sister, father and step-mother; the ghastly murder that occurred; her subsequent arrest, trial, and acquittal; and her life in Fall River in the years afterward.

Musical entertainment will be provided from 6:15 - 6:45 PM. Leslie Goddard's living history portrayal of Borden will begin at 7:00 PM. A Q & A session will follow the performance. Questions can first be asked to Goddard as Borden, and then Goddard as herself.

Refreshments will be available for a donation from 6:00 - 6:45 PM and after the Q & A session.

If at all possible, attendees are asked to park in the gravel lot directly across from the library on Spruce Street.

What is "Living History Nights"? Performances that bring history to life. Each night a scholar/living historian will assume the role of a notable historical figure and perform a monologue based on the life of that individual. This will be followed by an audience Q & A session with questions addressed to both the character and the scholar/living historian.

This event, presented by the Gallipolis Chautauqua Committee, is suitable for all ages and is free and open to the public.

Lizzie Borden (1860-1927): Born in Fall River, Massachusetts. Lizzie Borden was the daughter of well-to-do businessman Andrew Borden and his first wife, Sarah. A parsimonious man, Andrew Borden elected to not live in the affluent area of the town, The Hill, but close to his businesses in the industrial part of town. He also did not believe in luxuries for his family such as indoor plumbing and electricity.

At the age of three, Lizzie's mother died and her father subsequently married Abby Gray. Lizzie and her older sister, Emma, were not fond of their step-mother and both felt that she had married their father for his wealth and status. They both worried that they would not be given their share of the inheritance from their father's property. In 1892, at the ages of 32 and 41, Lizzie and her sister still lived at home and Lizzie, in particular, resented the fact that, due to her father's frugality, they could not live on The Hill with those whom she considered of her own social class. Tension over these issues steadily grew worse and there were many arguments between the women and their father.

On the morning of August 4, 1892, Abby went upstairs to straighten up the guest room, used by the girls' maternal uncle the night before, while Mr. Borden left the house to conduct his business. He returned a short while later and decided to take a short nap in the living room. According to Lizzie, sometime around 11:15 AM, she discovered her father dead on the couch from multiple hatchet wounds. Abby was subsequently discovered upstairs, killed from 14 blows to her head.

Suspected fairly soon after the murders due to her contradictory and strange testimony, Lizzie was arrested and jailed. Due to the horrific nature of the crime, her arrest and subsequent trial made national headlines and Lizzie became a media sensation. At her trial in June 1893, Lizzie was acquitted of the murders, as the prosecution only had circumstantial evidence to submit to the court. The all-male jury also acquitted as it was thought that a well-bred Christian female could not possible have committed such a crime.

After the trial, Lizzie and her sister inherited a substantial sum from their father's estate (around 9 million dollars today) and Lizzie was finally able to buy the mansion on The Hill that she always wanted. She was able to hire servants, purchase expensive furnishings, and travel in style. Despite her acquittal, Lizzie was ostracized by Fall River society, most of whom considered her to be guilty.

Lizzie lived on The Hill in Fall River until her death in June of 1927. Her sister Emma (who had moved from Fall River) died a few days after Lizzie. At her death, Lizzie was worth what would be over 5 million dollars today. Her money was left to the Fall River Animal Rescue League, a trust for perpetual care for her father's grave, as well as select friends and family members. Even today the question remains -- Did she? Or didn't she?

Leslie Goddard is an award-winning historian, author, actress and lecturer who has been presenting on topics in American history and women's history for twenty years. She holds an interdisciplinary Ph.D. from Northwestern University as well as a master's degree in both museum studies and in theater. A former museum director, she currently works full-time as a public speaker and author.

Ms. Goddard is known nationally for her work in bringing women's history alive. Her portrayals include television personality and cook Julia Child; aviator Amelia Earhart; entrepreneur and fashion designer Lilly Pulitzer; first ladies Eleanor Roosevelt, Lady Bird Johnson, and Jackie Kennedy; film star Bette Davis; novelist Louisa May Alcott; Titanic survivor Violet Jessop; environmental writer Rachel Carson, and modern artist Georgia O'Keeffe.

Ms. Goddard performed as a Road Scholar with the Illinois Humanities Council and has served on the board of directors of the Illinois State Historical Society, the Illinois Association of Museums, and the Civil War Round Table of Chicago. Ms. Goddard lives in Illinois with her husband and their two black pugs.

Join the "Queen of Crime," mystery writer Agatha Christie on Friday, August 11, 2023 at 7:00 PM in the library's Riverside Room as she recounts her life story. Learn about her early writing career, her creation of her famous characters Hercule Poirot and Miss Jane Marple, and the success that lead to being named the best-selling novelist of all time.

Musical entertainment will be provided from 6:15 - 6:45 PM. Debra Miller's living history portrayal of Christie will begin at 7:00 PM. A Q & A session will follow the performance. Questions can first be asked to Miller as Christie, and then Miller as herself.

Agatha Christie (1890-1976): Born in Torquay, United Kingdom. Born into a wealthy upper middle class family, Agatha Christie spent her early years being homeschooled by her mother on the family's estate. Being the third and last child in her family and much younger than her two siblings, Agatha spent much of her childhood with her pets and imaginary friends. Books played an important part in her childhood as Christie was a voracious reader who was reading by the age of four.

In 1914, at the age of 24, Agatha married Archibald Christie, an officer in the Royal Flying Corps. While Archibald was serving in France during the war, Agatha served as a nurse, and later an apothecary's assistant, for the British Red Cross. During this time, Agatha wrote her first detective novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles, the first of many books to feature Hercule Poirot. Rejected by numerous publishers, it was finally published in 1920 by The Bodley Head. Continuing to write once Archibald was home from the war and after their only child, a daughter, was born, Agatha now had no trouble selling her novels and short stories.

In 1926, Archibald asked for a divorce and, after a quarrel in December, Agatha disappeared from their home. Her car was discovered the next day near a chalk quarry and the fear was that she might have taken her own life. Her disappearance created international headlines and lead to an extensive manhunt. Found 10 days later, alive and well, not far from her home, Christie never gave a satisfactory reason for her disappearance. Although two doctors diagnosed her with "a loss of memory," opinions then and now remain divided over the reason for her disappearance.

In 1930, divorced from Archibald, Christie met and married archaeologist Max Mallowan. She used her subsequent travels with him on his archaeological digs as background for a number of her novels. Up until her death in 1976 at age 85, Christie continued to write both novels and short stories most of which achieved best-seller status.

Listed as the best-selling novelist of all time and called the "Queen of Crime" and the "Mistress of Mystery", Christie is considered a master of suspense, plotting, and characterization. Many mystery writers cite her as an influence on their own writing and state that her books are still wonderful reads nearly 100 years after her first novel was published. Debra Miller is a professional actress, vocalist, and voice-over talent with over 30 years of experience as a performer for live audiences, television, and film. A graduate of Michigan State University's Department of Theater, Ms. Miller has toured the country with such prestigious children's theater companies as Artreach (now the Children's Theater of Cincinnati) and Child's Play Touring Theatre. Since 1997, she has traveled the country with Michael Krebs of With Lincoln Production, portraying one of our nation's more controversial First Ladies, Mary Todd Lincoln in Visiting the Lincolns.

In 2010, she began creating her own company, Historical Women of Letters, in which she portrays important historical figures based off of their own letters and journals. Her portrayals include authors Jane Austen, Beatrix Potter, Mary Shelley, Louisa May Alcott, and Elizabeth Barrett Browning, as well as First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln and investigative journalist Nellie Bly. Ms. Miller lives in Illinois.

Join Depression-era gangster Charles "Pretty Boy" Floyd on Thursday, August 10, 2023 at 7:00 PM in the library's Riverside Room as he recounts his life story and criminal exploits. Learn about his descent into crime and the robberies and murders he committed in the state of Ohio.

Musical entertainment will be provided from 6:15 - 6:45 PM. Ken Hammontree's living history portrayal of Floyd will begin at 7:00 PM. A Q & A session will follow the performance. Questions can first be asked to Hammontree as Floyd, and then Hammontree as himself.

Charles Arthur "Pretty Boy" Floyd (1904-1934): Born in Bartow County, Georgia, Floyd spent his early years in Akins, Oklahoma. Pursuing a life of crime at an early age, Floyd was arrested at the age of 18 for theft. Three years later he was arrested for robbery and sentenced to five years in prison.

Once paroled, he join the Kansas City underworld and committed a number of bank robberies and various other crimes. It was during this time he was nicknamed "Pretty Boy," although there are disputes as to whether he was named for his good looks or for his fancy dress. Either way, Floyd despised his nickname.

In 1930, Floyd was arrested in both Akron and Toledo, Ohio for robbery and murder. In Sylvania, Ohio he was convicted of bank robbery and sentenced to the Ohio State Penitentiary. Escaping enroute to the penitentiary, Floyd became a fugitive on the run.

Due to the belief that during his robberies Floyd destroyed mortgage documents held by banks during these Depression years, he was considered by many to be a modern-day Robin Hood. Protected by local Oklahoma citizens, Floyd continued his criminal activities for the next few years.

In 1933, Floyd was accused of having participated in the Kansas City Union Station massacre where three police officers, an FBI agent, and a prisoner were killed. At that time, this event was considered one of the deadliest attacks on law the nation had ever seen. Both Floyd and his family denied his involvement and there are many historians who agree with them.

Named "Public Enemy No. 1" by the FBI in 1934, the FBI increased its efforts to apprehend Floyd. In October of 1934, after spending time in New York, Floyd and some friends were on their way back to Oklahoma when Floyd wrecked the car near Wellsville, Ohio. After officers became suspicious, the FBI and local authorities began an intensive search in eastern Ohio. On October 22, south of Clarkson, Ohio, Floyd was spotted by the FBI and the East Liverpool police. Stopped by the officers, Floyd emerged from his car with his gun drawn and was shot, dying 15 minutes afterwards. (Biographical information courtesy of biography.com and fbi.com).

Ken Hammontree, historian, lecturer, and author, is an established "presenter" through his company "Living History Productions." A former history teacher, Mr. Hammontree decided to make history more exciting and relatable to his students by dressing as historical characters after realizing how disinterested his students were in learning about the nation's history.

Mr. Hammontree's first historical portrayal was Johnny Appleseed, but he has since portrayed a variety of historical figures, including, but not limited to: General George Washington, General Dwight Eisenhower, Daniel Boone, Harry Truman, Aaron Burr, and Oskar Schindler.

He prides himself on portraying each historical figure with authenticity and detail. For "Pretty Boy" Floyd, Mr. Hammontree spent a number of years in researching the 1930's and the role of the FBI in hunting down criminals on the 10 most wanted list. He has spent several days in East Liverpool where Floyd was killed and even spent the night in the local funeral home, now a B&B, where Floyd was taken after his death. Mr. Hammontree lives in Ashland, Ohio.

Bossard Library is pleased to welcome Jessica "Dixie" Mills to the Library for a presentation on Saturday, September 9, 2023.

On Sunday, September 10, 2023, at 1:30 PM, hiking enthusiasts are encouraged to join Dixie for a 3-mile hike on the Gatewood Trail System at the University of Rio Grande. Those participating will receive an "I Hiked with Dixie" commemorative pin (while supplies last).

REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED FOR THIS EVENT.

Please note that the hiking portion of the event will be moved to a different time of the day or may not take place in the case of severe weather (thunder, lightning, hail, etc.). This decision will be made late Saturday evening or early Sunday morning. We ask that those who register watch our website and Facebook page for any changes made to this event.

Weather permitting, photo opportunities with Dixie will be available at the head of the trail system 2 hours prior to the official start of the hike. Dixie will also have merchandise available for sale both at the presentation and at the hike.

All those wishing to hike with Dixie will need to sign a waiver in order to participate in this event. For those ages 17 and under, a parent/legal guardian must sign the waiver for each minor. Minors (ages 17 and under) must be accompanied on the hike by a responsible adult -- either the parent/legal guardian or an adult designated on the waiver by the parent/legal guardian.

Waivers can be dropped off at the library's Circulation Desk, mailed to the Library at 7 Spruce Street, Gallipolis, Ohio 45631, or e-mailed to this address: library@bossardlibrary.org.

All waivers must be on file at the library no later than Friday, September 8.

Dixie is an inspirational creator and accomplished adventurer who bailed from society's rat race in 2015 to chase a childhood dream of thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail. Since taking her first steps on the trail, she has built a successful backpacking platform sharing knowledge and adventures on YouTube along the way.

In 2018, Dixie completed the "Triple Crown of Hiking" which encompasses three 2,000+ mile trails including the Appalachian Trail, Pacific Crest Trail, and Continental Divide Trail. Dixie has since expanded her adventuring to other countries, and continues to grow by finding new ways to step outside her comfort zone while encouraging others to do the same.

Bossard Library is pleased to announce that Jessica "Dixie" Mills will be returning to the library in September for a presentation.

REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED FOR THIS EVENT.

On Saturday, September 9 at 12:00 PM, join Dixie as she relates some of her adventures on, and what she has learned along, the many hiking trails she has travelled.

This will be a one hour talk with a 30 minute Q & A session to follow. Photo opportunities with Dixie will be available after the presentation. Dixie will also have merchandise available for sale.

One lucky attendee will win a door prize, a Grandma Gatewood Christmas bulb, donated by the Gallia County Historical Society.

Bossard Library is pleased to announce that the Vision Van will be returning to visit the Library on Friday, July 19, 2024.

This mobile vision van will provide FREE vision screenings, eye exams, and, if needed, new prescription glasses to youth ages 4-18 (still attending school).

Appointments are REQUIRED to visit the Vision Van and can be made starting July 2, 2024. Residency in Gallia County is not required.

To make an eye appointment, a parent/legal guardian will need to register each child on-line and complete two forms (the Vision Van registration form and the Library's waiver) for each child.

In order for the registration to be complete, these two forms need to be returned to the Library by 8:00 PM on Monday, July 15, 2024.

If the forms are not returned by Monday, July 15, 2024 the child/children will be dropped from the registration list.

Please note that similar to when going to a regular doctor appointment, there may be a wait time before the child/children are seen by the doctor on the day of the Vision Van visit. We ask that you please be patient as the appointments are completed.

Provided through a unique collaboration between the Foundation for Appalachian Ohio, the Ohio Optometric Foundation, and the non-profit provider Vision to Learn, the goal is to provide students with a guarantee of clear vision in order to help them learn.

Students with untreated vision problems often struggle at school, and are less likely to achieve reading proficiency by third grade, putting them at greater risk of dropping out.

Bossard Library is happy to help in bringing this much needed service to students and families in Gallia County.
