]]>Park Yon-jae is a Korean visual designer who has been a professor in the Department of Industrial Design at Joongbu University for 26 years.
Under the theme of “Return to Nature,” Park Yon-jae’s exhibition expresses human desire to return to the pure nature. By expressing the dizzy and frustrating material-all-round society with barcodes and the human self with fish, butterflies, and flowers, the desire to return to the purity of the beginning was expressed in illustration.

Art is a universal language that has many modes of expression. Color Songs: Musicians as Visual Artists, curated by Dr. Yaoundé Olu, focuses on a marriage between the disciplines of visual art and music. Visual artists who also create music, or musicians who compose visual artworks were invited to exhibit paintings, drawings, sculptures, mixed media, printmaking, fiber arts, photography, & digital works. While works of art addressing music as a subject were encouraged, the pieces of visual art featured in Color Songs are not limited to this theme.
Sura Dupart and Carol Sawall are featured in Color Songs: Bridgeport
Art Center exhibit due to their unique paths of creativity that includes embracing a unique path of both music and art. Their visual art, paintings & sculpture are highlighted here in honor of their history as innovative creatives who have
demonstrated mastery in both arenas, as well as in their humanitarian endeavors.
Sura Dupart is a visual artist and musician. He started his visual arts journey with sculpture (wood/stone) and later was one of the original Sun Drummers. He performs regularly at the Woodlawn Tap in Hyde Park, Chicago, and was recently featured on CBS Behind the Scene. His main focus is that of inspiring people to do their best.
Carol Sawall was a painter who works in oils, acrylics, and watercolors. Her works have been featured in numerous shows and galleries. As a musician, she composes and sings, and has several records available on the market. She passed away
several years ago, but her artwork is still appreciated and included in many private collections.
YAOUNDÉ OLU, PhD
Color Songs Curator
Dr. Yaoundé Olu is a visual artist, curator, indie comics publisher, musician,
author, journalist, and astrological scientist. She is a former principal of a high
school for the arts, and she owned and operated Osun Center for the Arts, an art
gallery in Chicago, from 1968 – 1982.
Dr. Olu is an award-winning editorial cartoonist with the Crusader
Newspaper Group, and was recently featured in a New York Times bestseller; “It’s
Life As I See It; Black Cartoonists in Chicago, 1940-1980,” published to
accompany an exhibit featuring some of her work at Chicago’s Museum of
Contemporary Art. Other exhibit venues include, but are not limited to, the
University of Chicago’s Smart Museum; the Noyes Cultural Arts Center; the
Evanston Art Center; the Chicago Cultural Center; the Tubman Museum; the
University of Illinois African American Cultural Center; South Shore Cultural
Center; Heaven Gallery; Pigment International, Sapphire & Crystals exhibits and
the Bridgeport Art Center to name a few. Dr. Olu represented the American
Midwest at Festac 77, the 2nd World Festival of Black and African Arts and
Culture in Lagos, Nigeria. Dr. Olu is the curator of Color Songs.
As a musician she received the John Phillip Susa Award for excellence on
the alto clarinet in 1963. Currently, she is founder and artistic director of the Drum
Divas, an all-female percussion ensemble founded in 2003 that features original
Drum songs. You can hear this work on the musical platform Bandcamp. She is
composer of numerous songs and has produced several self-published albums and
showcases her work on a couple of online sites. Moreover, she was a former co-
host of Jazz Port on the University of Chicago’s WHPK 88.5 FM radio station.
Aside from the foregoing, Dr. Olu has had musical collaborations with numerous
bands and individuals through the years. She resides in Chicago, IL.

]]>GuruShots is a digital platform that allows photographers from around the world to submit their work for a variety of thematic photo challenges that open every day.
Their July 2026 exhibition at Bridgeport Art Center features their premium exhibitions, a special series of photography exhibitions displaying photographic works from around the globe. Visitors will be able to view this remarkable collection of 150 unique printed works submitted by photographers spanning over 30 different countries.

This fall, Pigment International reprises its partnership with September Gray Fine Art to bring Decadence Deux—the second iteration of Decadence of Another Kind—to Bridgeport Art Center. On view September 18 through November 6, with an opening reception Friday, September 18 from 7–10 p.m., the exhibition gathers an intergenerational and international roster of artists whose practices explore memory, migration, family, and resilience through the language of materiality, abstraction and figuration.
Mounted by September Gray Fine Art and presented in partnership with Pigment International, Decadence Deux reframes the idea of decadence—not as excess, but as a richness of lived experience. The exhibition foregrounds artists including Kevin Cole, Kevin Okeith, Marrayam Moma, Lionel Lofton, Jamele Wright Sr., Preston Sampson, Antonio Carreno, Frank Schroder, Gabrielle Torres, and Eleanor Neal. Together, they offer nuanced meditations on heritage and identity, reflecting shared human experiences that transcend geography—from the American South to the Dominican Republic and France.
Curator September Gray describes abstraction as a liberating force: a mode of storytelling that unfolds over time, much like life itself. In this exhibition, abstraction becomes both method and metaphor—layered, expansive, and resistant to singular interpretation. Works by Eleanor Neal and Shirley Woodson further anchor the presentation with powerful reflections on community resilience, illuminating beauty that emerges even in isolation.
Decadence Deux invites Chicago audiences to consider how personal and collective histories shape the present and inform the future. Rich in materiality, symbolism, and emotional depth, the exhibition promises a compelling visual dialogue about endurance, transformation, and the many forms that decadence can take.

Inspired by the powerful materiality of abstract expressionism and contemporary masters such as Antoni Tàpies, Anselm Kiefer, and Bosco Sodi, Robert Lipton presents a series of richly textured mixed-media paintings that explore color, surface, and transformation.
Built through layers of pigment and organic processes, these works invite viewers to slow down, look closely, and discover shifting landscapes of texture, depth, and form.

This anniversary exhibition aims to celebrate four decades of visual sociological practice while fostering dialogue about the future of research, creativity, and social engagement. Through photography, film, mixed media, installation, performance documentation, digital works, and other experimental forms, the exhibition seeks contributions that question established canons and imagine new ways of seeing, knowing, and creating.
The exhibition will be presented at Bridgeport Art Center as part of IVSA’s 40th Anniversary celebration, bringing together an international community of artists, researchers, and scholars dedicated to expanding the role of visual practice in understanding social life.

]]>What happens when you bring an Abstract painter and a Surrealist together in one exhibition? The audience gets to take a journey through the artists’ story laid out on canvas, doused in color and covered in a vision.
Ron Jerak creates the images he envisions by using strong color and contrast, incorporating straight lines and sharp angles. Symmetry is often present in his works, though asymmetrical compositions are employed as well. Michael Preski creates intricate and often highly detailed imagery with multiple mediums, layering different segments until they form the final piece. Like Ron’s works, they can cover a full range of concepts with their subjects, but all of them tell a story. Both of their stories are contained within each individual piece as well as the whole of their works. These stories are often drawn from everyday events, emotions and general life experiences as how the viewers experience the world. And though every piece is open to the audience’s interpretation, the artists guide their perceptions using the visuals themselves as a map. So feel free to join these two artists as they share their stories depicted in vibrant colors and unwavering imagery.
