The number of women who died after an ectopic pregnancy has spiked in recent years, a ProPublica analysis found. The mounting deaths in Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data have drawn little scrutiny or response.

Such deaths typically occur in the first trimester, after a pregnancy fails to properly implant in the uterus and begins to develop elsewhere, most commonly inside a fallopian tube. The embryo grows until it causes the organ to rupture, triggering catastrophic bleeding.

Thousands of patients across the Southeastern United States are now being forced to travel more than 250 miles to access abortion care in North Carolina, according to a study recently published by The Journal of the American Medical Association. The study, completed by Dr. Kelsey Loeliger and her colleagues, quantified the South’s increasingly desperate abortion landscape, documenting the out-of-state abortion cases in North Carolina in the first year since the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision.

Anti-choice lawmakers throughout the Southeast have made abortion care inaccessible for tens of thousands of women, and now North Carolina—despite having its own anti-abortion policies—has become something of an “abortion refugee” state, with over 10,000 more people traveling from out of state to seek abortion care in the first year since Roe was overturned. Moreover, the study found that abortion bans disproportionately impact Black patients, adding to a growing body of research that underlines the racial underpinning of anti-abortion policymaking.

In Okiri, Badia East, Iganmu Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of Lagos State, Mrs Abiola has shared the painful story of losing her daughter to complications from an unsafe abortion.

Though the incident occurred several years ago, Abiola says the grief remains fresh. What continues to puzzle her is that her daughter was already a mother of two children, and she never explained why she chose to terminate the pregnancy.

Recounting the tragic day, Abiola said: “When she finally told us she had an abortion, we tried to rush her to a hospital. She was already very weak. I held her in the vehicle and prayed desperately for God to save her. Suddenly, we got caught in a traffic jam. We were still stuck in traffic, with the hospital building already in sight, when she died in my arms.”

A national anti-abortion organization is warning Saskatoon city council that any attempt to restrict its use of graphic imagery of aborted fetuses could face legal challenges.

Coun. Bev Dubois is asking council to consider action to restrict the distribution of flyers after a foldable pamphlet with bloody images of aborted fetuses was delivered to homes in Saskatoon in August, prompting complaints from residents.

Dubois said she’s aware of bylaws in other cities, including Calgary, that require graphic abortion imagery to be contained in an opaque envelope with a warning about the contents.
