Thick dense and rich sound. Cello like a laser cutting through. Repetitive hypnotic patterns. Restless and nervous gesture. Archaic melodies. peculiar and slightly dystopian landscape. TATTOO is an intense exploration of obsession, with cello and electronics locked in a dense, relentless sonic struggle. TATTOO was envisaged as a reminder of the destiny of Mascha Kalesnikava, who was being held in Belarussian prison till December 2025 as a political prisoner. The title is taken from a book by Maxim Znak, Masha’s fellow dissident.

TATTOO ist eine intensive Auseinandersetzung mit Obsession, bei der Cello und Elektronik in einem dichten, unerbittlichen Klangkampf miteinander verflochten sind. TATTOO entstand im Jahr 2025 und ist Mascha Kalesnikava gewidmet, die bis Dezember 2025 als politische Gefangene in einem belarussischen Gefängnis festgehalten wurde. Der Titel stammt aus einem Buch von Maxim Znak, einem Mitstreiter von Mascha.

This is one of the productions from 2025 that moved me the most. The polar opposite of my projects on silence and listening, The Sad Album by Laura Bowler and the collective lovemusic is an explosive piece: here we shout, stamp our feet, laugh, immerse ourselves in dark thoughts and colourful memories, cry, drink lots of tea and meet up with friends on the sofa to binge-watch Netflix in silence. Ah… finally, look at that silence returning! Come and join us on this emotional journey with collective lovemusic and Laura Bowler.

The Sad Album is an excavation of the darker, stranger, and more tender aspects of grief. Composer and singer Laura Bowler and the musicians of lovemusic have shared stories, laughed, cried, and raged in an effort to understand – and dismantle – the masks people wear when confronting the loss of someone they love. This new show, premiered at Musica Festival in Strasbourg, offers a journey through the voids left behind, magnified frustrations, and celebrated mundanities, gathered over a year and a day of filling and amplifying grief’s silences and absurdities.

Slipping between the universal and the personal, the raw and the precise, the comic and the tragic, The Sad Album explores a permanently altered reality. Drawing from psychological and neurological research, but also deeply personal testimony from the artists, in this visceral and explosive new work lovemusic are happy to talk about being sad.

The Sad Album sees Laura Bowler join lovemusic on stage as part of a series of new long-form pieces commissioned by the collective, in which composer-artists not only collaborate closely with the ensemble to develop new works, but also perform alongside them.

As in much of Bowler’s work, The Sad Album pushes the performers to the limits of physical expression. A torrent of text pours from Bowler, while the musicians perform vertiginous loops. True to lovemusic’s performance style, the artists are physically involved in the performance, creating an hour of choreographed chaos that grapples with the impossibility of defining grief.

Music and dance meet … silence.

The new production tacet_ by choreographer Eva Baumann draws its driving force from the collective numbness that has enveloped us in the wake of current global crises. ‘Tacet’ in musical notation indicates ‘silence’ for the instrument or the singing voice, challenging the breathless pace of our accelerated society, a pace we have grown accustomed to. Four dancers and a cellist embark on a journey to search for inner calmness and interpersonal connection in a noisy, increasingly dystopian world.

But can communication succeed in silence?
Does silence have a physical resonance?

This performative utopia is given artistic expression through the dance, musical movements and gestures, and the voices of the five protagonists. With its acoustically diverse possibilities and expressive range, the cello becomes the sixth performer within the international ensemble. The immersive music-dance performance counterpoints the noise of our present with fragility and explores the nuances of silence. The performance venue acts as an acoustic amplifier, creating an atmospheric resonance space for sound and silence – movement and stillness.

The audience plays an integral part of the performance. Seated right in the middle of the action, they are surrounded, permeated, and juxtaposed by what is happening on stage. At the beginning of each performance, a gathering, a “tune-in,” invites the audience to sensitize their perception to their individual and common silence. Their role is central, as it is their silence that ultimately gives space to listening.

In Protest of the Physical, lovemusic proposes an experience in four tableaux, in which the performers’ bodies are not merely vehicles for instrumental execution, but fully embodied physical presences on stage – both intrinsically intertwined with the music and its physical demands, and serving as a foil to highlight how gesture shapes our listening experience. By incorporating artists from different disciplines into the creative process, questioning the role of the audience itself, and using the body as an expressive tool of communication, the collective also seeks to reclaim their position as unique performers on stage, rather than replaceable “instrumentalists”.

In Protest of the Physical, lovemusic continues its exploration of the body as both a source and essential vector in making new music. This new programme includes three new works written for the collective, in which gesture, sound, and perception intertwine to offer an embodied experience.

Zwei Tage lang feiert open music sein 20-jähriges Bestehen. 20 Jahre frei improvisierte Musik, unzählige Vermittlungsprogramme, interdisziplinäre und pädagogische Projekte, Konzerte im Dialog zwischen Improvisation und Komposition, offene Sessions und Aufnahmen. 20 Jahre, die vor allem von dem Musiker und Pädagogen Scott Roller geprägt wurden, der im Januar 2024 verstorben ist und den wir auch im Sommer 2025 feiern wollen.

Für das open music festival lädt das open music ensemble lokale und internationale Gäste, langjährige und neue Mitstreiter*innen zu einem vielfältigen Festival- Programm ein: Konzerte mit komponierter und frei improvisierter Musik, die Aufführung eines Improvisationsstückes mit Publikumsbeteiligung,  Installationen, einen Improvisations-Workshop für Jugendliche, das LAB-Session für professionelle Musiker*innen, Begegnungen und Austausch mit dem Publikum.

Durch diesen facettenreichen Ansatz macht open music improvisierte Musik auf unterschiedliche Weise zugänglich und erfahrbar.

Here is a concert we’ll perform this spring 2025 with the collective lovemusic, taking place as part of the Festival Musiques Démesurées in Clermont-Ferrand.

The ‘Talking Music’ project, which began with Philip Venables’ works at the Musica Festival in 2021, has taken various forms over time, with performances at the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, the Arsenal in Metz, Klangwerkstatt Berlin, and many others. Today, wlovemusic is delighted to revive this project for the Musiques Démesurées festival, remaining faithful to its original concept: an exploration of the voice, identity and performance. Concert by the lovemusic collective celebrating a new generation of artists
As part of Poland’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union

With Contre, lovemusic is highlighting the musical creation of young artists from north-east Europe, mainly from Poland – the country that will hold the presidency of the Council of the European Union from January to June 2025.

Borrowing the title of his piece Contre from Kuba Krzewiński, this programme presents five works for violin, viola, cello and electronics, based on this word which can mean opposition as well as proximity and contact. Whether through the de(con)struction of a Polish folk song in Anna Sowa, the friction of sonorities and textures in the pieces by Martyna Kosecka and Aleksandra Słyż, the bow hairs taped directly to the musicians’ arms in Asia Ahmetjanova’s trio or even the interplay of the body as instrument and the instrument as body by Kuba Krzewiński, all these approaches and aesthetics play on distance and rapprochement, opposites and similarities.

Contre offers an immersive experience in which the works unfold contrasting tableaux between minimalist, repetitive, electronic music and physical performance, transforming listening into a multi-sensory experience. Resolutely experimental, Contre invites us to break away from convention and enter a liberating interlude, far removed from the rhythm of everyday life.

Ensemble-Improvisation als kollektive Echtzeit-Komposition. Improvisation und Komposition sind musikalische Aspekte, die sich keineswegs widersprechen müssen. Freiheit und Regeln müssen weder gesellschaftlich noch musikalisch unvereinbare Gegensätze sein. Diese Erfahrung bildet die Grundlage für unsere Konzertreihe Spannungsfeld. 
Am 7. Dezember 2024 lädt das Open_Music Ensemble den Posaunisten und Komponisten Mike Svoboda zu Spannungsfeld 2024 ein. Das Schülerensemble JAM (Junge Aktuelle Musik) der Musikschule Stuttgart präsentiert ebenfalls Improvisation-Miniaturen, die in Workshops mit ihrem Leiter Alexander Adiarte und dem Open_Music Ensemble entwickelt wurden.

Piksel is an international network and annual event for electronic art and technological freedom. Part workshop, part festival, it is organised in Bergen, Norway, and involves participants from more than a dozen countries exchanging ideas, coding, presenting art and software projects, doing workshops, performances and discussions on the aesthetics and politics of free technologies.

The development, and therefore use, of digital technology today is mainly controlled by multinational corporations. Despite the prospects of technology expanding the means of artistic expression, the commercial demands of the software industries severely limit them instead. Piksel is focusing on the Free/Libre and Open Source movement as a strategy for regaining artistic control of the technology, but also a means to bring attention to the close connections between art, politics, technology and economy.

Reactive Ensemble is an electro-acoustic collective from Stuttgart dedicated to reshaping the nature of music creation and performance. Through unlimited experimentation, the ensemble creates innovative formats that challenge traditional music conventions and reimagine how sound, space, and collaboration can be experienced. In 2023, the European Festivals Fund for Emerging Artists awarded the ensemble with the EFFEA Discovery Residency and in 2024 with the Springboard Residency, which gave the ensemble the opportunity to establish partnerships with the Delian Academy for New Music (Greece), Piksel Festival (Norway), Festival Catalysi (Italy) with the support of the Internationales Digitalkunst Festival (Germany).

After leaving France for Germany 20 years ago (!!), it’s a pleasure to be back to work there, with all the experience I’ve gained along the way and the prism of perspectives I’ve grown to consider. And for this, what better place than Strasbourg, the European gateway? What better team to embark on a new musical and human adventure than lovemusic?

lovemusic is a collective of musicians specialised in new music based in Strasbourg. Working with composers on new and exciting works that will enrich the musical world is at the heart of what we do. This means collaborating with artists who wish to create new music together in which both the composer and musicians are actively involved in the creative process. We want to dismantle the patriarchal and hierarchical systems engrained in the new music world, creating a safe and inclusive environment in which musicians can decide for themselves how they contribute to each project, the music they want to perform and the composers they wish to work with.

The members of lovemusic have diverse backgrounds and tastes which nourish the choices of the music we perform. We welcome the multiplicity of aesthetics that new music today offers and our programmes are the result of extensive research which allows us to programme creatively, bringing new voices to new audiences. Diversity is important and we strive to programme music that takes into consideration ethnicity, gender and sexual identity. 

The way in which we present music on stage is always taken into consideration. We perform un-conducted, which creates not only intimate bonds between the musicians but also an active and exciting connection with the public. We like working with lighting, video and scenography which contribute to creating an immersive listening experience. lovemusic concerts are colourful, fun and innovative drawing the public into our diverse musical world.

Good news on top is that lovemusic has been awarded the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation Ensemble Prize ‘25 ! The coming season will be fun and colourful, stay tuned!!!
