Greenwood Drive in Butler Township was briefly shut down this morning after an accident.

The two vehicle crash happened just after 7 a.m. at the intersection of Greenwood Drive and Route 422.

Emergency crews initially said there were injuries, but according to 911 dispatchers—no one was taken to the hospital.

A Butler man is recovering after he was hit by a car over the weekend.

The accident happened near the Sheetz gas station on New Castle Road around 6:15 Saturday evening. Butler Township Police say 41-year-old Jason Robbins was crossing the street when he was hit by a vehicle driven by 70-year-old Patricia Krapf.

Police say Robbins was wearing dark clothing at the time.

He was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital to be treated for injuries to the right side of his body.

Butler County Human Services has named their annual award winners and Butler County Community College has received special recognition.

BC3 was honored with the 2019 Collaborator of the Year Award during last week’s county Human Services Christmas Holiday Breakfast at the Atrium in Prospect.

This award is given to a person or organization that “clearly demonstrates commitment to the collaborative nature of the county.”

An example of a recent BC3 partnership is the “Reset Your Brain: A Revolutionary Approach to Opioid Addiction and Recovery” program which includes the “Hope is Dope” and “New Eyes” classes. Many BC3 employees also volunteer during work hours at the Light of Life Community Outreach to serve homeless in our community.

A longtime fundraiser to benefit local children is about to get underway for yet another year.

It’s the 22^nd year for the Caring Angel Basket Auction put together by the Butler Health System Foundation.

“The Caring Angel program goes to support charitable medical care for children under the age of 18 that come through the emergency room  at the Butler Hospital who don’t have the resources to pay,” Butler Health System Foundation Director Kris Bowser said.

“It also goes to support family services at Butler Health System, and they offer many programs for families,” Bowser said.

The elaborate baskets will be on display this Tuesday through next Tuesday, Dec. 17 at the Nixon/Sarver Education Center inside the Butler Hospital Tower, including on weekends. Tickets are $5 for 10, and $10 for 25. A 50/50 raffle is also on sale. Winners will be notified Dec. 18.

According to Bowser, there is a basket for every interest, including a Yeti basket that has accessories for camping out. There’s also a smoker, kayaks, a Southwest gift card, and much more.

Butler Radio’s country music station- WBUT 1050AM- will broadcast live inside Butler Memorial Hospital on Friday morning talking about the basket auction and the programs it supports.

To date, over $2 million has been raised to support the program.

Police are investigating who stole over $3,000 worth of merchandise from a family-owned business in Evans City.

State police say it happened last Monday when the owner of Forever Kindred on Timberlee Drive placed multiple packages next to the mailbox for a scheduled pickup.

However, those packages were stolen before the postal service arrived.

Police believe the theft happened at some point between noon and 1 p.m.

The Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Arizona Cardinals 23-17 Sunday for their third victory in a row. Kicker Chris Boswell hit three field goals as the Steelers never trailed in the game, despite scoring just one offensive touchdown. Diontae Johnson returned a punt 85-yards for a touchdown and caught a two-yard touchdown pass from Devlin Hodges, who was 16-of-19 for 152 yards.

The Steelers defense picked off Arizona quarterback Kyler Murray three times and had four sacks.

The Steelers improved to 8-5 and will host the Buffalo Bills this Sunday night. Kick-off is 8:20pm.

The Steelers continue to hold onto the final AFC Wild Card spot. Buffalo has the other Wild Card. The Bills fell to 9-4 after losing 24-17 to Baltimore. With the victory, the Ravens clinched a playoff spot. It was the ninth win in a row for Baltimore, who host the Jets this Thursday.

–Cleveland defeated Cincinnati 27-19. The Browns are now 6-7. The Bengals fell to 1-12.
–Tennessee defeated Oakland 42-21. The Titans have tied Houston for the AFC South lead at 8-5. The Texans were defeated by Denver 38-24 yesterday. The Titans host the Texans this Sunday.
–Kansas City defeated New England 23-16. The victory, combined with the Raiders loss, clinches the AFC West for the Chiefs.
–the Los Angeles Chargers defeated Jacksonville 45-10.
–Green Bay defeated Washington 20-15.
–Minnesota over Detroit 20-7.
–Atlanta-40 Carolina-20.
–Tampa Bay held off Indianapolis 38-35. The Colts have fallen to 6-7.
–The New York Jets edged Miami 22-21.
–San Francisco defeated New Orleans 48-46. The 49ers took over first place in the NFC West at 11-2. Despite the loss, New Orleans has already clinched the NFC South.

Sunday Night Football:
–The Los Angeles Rams kept playoff hopes alive with a 28-12 victory over Seattle. The Seahawks fell to 10-3, while The Rams are now 8-5 and one game behind Minnesota for the final NFC Wild Card.

Tonight in Monday Night Football:
–The 5-7 Philadelphia Eagles host the 2-10 New York Giants at 8:15pm. With a victory, the Eagles can tie Dallas for the NFC East lead.

The final College Football Playoff rankings were released last night with LSU ranked #1 and Ohio State, Clemson and Oklahoma in the final four teams who will play for a national championship.

LSU will meet Oklahoma in the Peach Bowl in Atlanta Saturday, December 28th. Ohio State and Clemson play in the Fiesta Bowl that night. The two winners play in the national championship game Monday, January 13th.

Penn State finished the season ranked 10th. The Nittany Lions will play Memphis in the Cotton Bowl. The game will be played Saturday, December 28th at noon.

Pitt will meet Eastern Michigan in the Quick Lane Bowl in Detroit Thursday, December 26th.

The first post-season bowls begin Friday, December 20th.

A total of 154 disciplinary actions were filed across the state in November for unsafe digging practices- including two in Butler County.

The first local violation occurred nearly a year ago in January of this year when Walsh and Knox Excavating was digging without a proper One Call ticket in Jackson Township. A Penn Power underground facility was struck and damaged. The excavators were fined $1,250.

A second violation occurred in February of 2019 in Cranberry Township when an electrical line was hit and damaged by Eisler Landscapes during excavation along Cranberry Woods Drive. Penn Power/First Energy was fined $500 as a result of incorrect marking of lines.

State law requires contractors and residents to contact PA One Call by dialing 8-1-1 at least three business days before an excavation so utilities can mark where lines are located.

A local credit union will continue their commitment to promoting higher education by awarding scholarships to current high school seniors.

The Armco Credit Union recently announced that they will be awarding $15,000 in college scholarships to freshmen entering school in the Fall of 2020.  Students who plan to enroll in an accredited vocational trade school or college are encouraged to apply.

According to the organization, this is the third year that they have awarded scholarships, and the application process has been simplified this year.

The Pittsburgh Steelers will return to action on Sunday, as they travel to Arizona to take on the Cardinals.

Going into the contest, the Steelers (7-5 overall) hold the second and final wild card spot on the AFC side.  According to the Steelers injury report on Sunday morning, receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster and running back James Conner have both been ruled out.
