Proud of creating GyanQuest apps for kids. Safety and Fun were the number 1 features.

Our apps are designed for our kids. Safety was the first goal. Ads, Popups to external sites, InApp purchases that Popup, Social Media integration were non starters. We were tired of our kids seeing inappropriate stuff.
Fun is an important goal. Our Apps and Games are designed to be fun. We want our kids to be learning through playing. Boring apps and Electronic Worksheet apps defeat the purpose. If the experience is fun, kids will stay curious and keep coming back for more.
Learning in Fun ways increases motivation levels and determines how much we retain. Apps and Games that pull in kids are essential to practice, repetition and dedication learning cycle. Learning with memorization decreases the amount we retain.

Let me say that the Tech Interview process that most major companies use is screwed up.

When your company recruiter has to send your candidate a book on how to interview, it is messed up. Would a company in this day and age, design software that required a big user manual to use?

Go back to the old style interview where you ask questions on their resume and experience. Don’t ask questions on red black trees, if your the job does not involve them.

And check for a culture fit and if the candidate meets the requirements then hire. Don’t hire superstars and make them fix web forms. It always ends in disaster.

Women in Computer Science

In my CS college in India, the ratio of women to men was 40:60. In the US, the ratio is lower which is more puzzling.

It is a difficult problem to solve and here is why. My daughter is in Elementary school and she loves Minecraft. Recently, I was surprised to find out that she did not choose a short Robotics elective. Her reason was – there were no girls in the class. Because her friends thought it was a ‘boy’ activity.

Unless we focus on encouraging our daughters in STEM, this problem is going to get worse. I am glad that there are women and minority focused coding clubs now. We really need to increase diversity in Tech!
