The K9 unit recently received a boost of fresh talent as K9 Nassau teamed up with a new K9 handler, Pumlani Bambiso, who has returned to his home at Amakhala after many years.

Pumlani is the grandson of Listen, a legend on Amakhala, who sadly passed away a few months ago. Pumlani was raised on Woodbury Farm, now part of Amakhala Game Reserve. Their house still stands today and was recently restored.

In the early days of Amakhala, Pumlani played an important role as part of the team that removed the old farm fences, implements and paraphernalia left after the adjoining local farms joined together to create Amakhala Game Reserve.

Pumlani left the reserve to work for various security companies outside the district, before returning after many years. Back on the reserve, he did odd jobs before joining the gate guard division after a gate guard did not arrive for work during Christmas of 2022. He served as a gate guard for about seven months, during which his potential for further growth was noticed by management.

When the opportunity rose, Pumlani was promoted to the Anti-Poaching Unit, where he showed a keen interest in Nassau, Amakhala’s K9 tracker dog, who was without a handler at the time.

Pumlani was tasked with the upkeep and care of Nassau, and soon it was decided to encourage his enthusiasm and interest by sending him on a dog handler course. He successfully achieved his Dog Handler level 4 in September 2023. 

Pumlani has also recently officially graduated from the 2024 GCF Community Anti-Poaching Ranger Training Programme that took place on Kariega and is back on AGR working with the APU team. We are extremely proud of Pumlani!

This is the second year in which CRF was chosen as the beneficiary by the organisers, Tim and Gwen Young.

“We are passionate about saving rhinos and do everything we can to contribute towards rhino conservation,” says Gwen, who is the operations manager at DM Cabling. “The best and most effective way for us to do this is through our Rhino Night Relay motorcycle race. Our events are 100% non-profit and we donate all entries and funds received.”

Their first-ever event was in 2018 when 80 riders raised over R10,000 for Saving The Survivors. The next year, more than 120 riders raised R12,000 for Kragga Kamma Game Park. COVID did not deter their fundraising efforts, and during 2020 R6,000 was raised during a virtual event for The Rhino Orphanage and Kragga Kamma Game Park and in 2021 and 2022, amazing lucky draws raised R6,200 for CRF and R13,210 for Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary.

In November 2022, Gwen joined CRF for an exclusive rhino collaring event for Remembrance Day. After this amazing experience, Gwen and Tim raised the bar even further and the recent 2023 event at the Rover Motorcycle Club included two additional races – a fun calf race for the little ones, as well as a day motorcycle race. An amazing R20,676 was raised for CRF, thanks to the generous participants and sponsors.

Celebrating K9 Cyrus

One of these deployments is K9 Cyrus, who has served as a member of the Anti-Poaching Unit at Kariega Game Reserve since March 2019. The specially trained Sable Shepherd teamed up with Kariega’s APU K9 handler, Daniel Haesslich, in a three-year project partnership between CRF, K9DPS (Bronyx K9 Training College), RAGES (The Rotarian Action Group for Endangered Species), Global Conservation Force (GCF) and Kariega Game Reserve.

K9 Cyrus has made a significant contribution to the conservation and protection of rhino and to the surrounding community. In January, he will turn 9 and has officially retired from active duty.

Both the Kariega Game Reserve and CRF team salutes K9 Cyrus, with gratitude for his loyal service and fondest wishes for his happy retirement with his family.

Welcome K9 Murdock!

We are also excited to announce that Murdock, a Dutch Shepherd who turns two in December, has been officially deployed to join Kariega’s K9 handler, Daniel. Murdock was bred and trained by Kilo9 Kennels for this K9 project partnership between CRF, Rhino Tears and Kariega Game Reserve.

Since late 2020, CRF has collared more than 500 rhinos. Dr William Fowlds was the vet on site when a rhino cow was collared most recently.

Collaring enables the physical health and location of rhino to be monitored and tracked continuously, so anti-poaching teams are positioned more strategically – one of the most successful anti-poaching interventions.

This type of conservation work is only possible thanks to the amazing support of generous donors, who enable CRF to protect our rhinos from professional, well-equipped and dangerous poaching syndicates.

Some of CRF’s donors – ranging in age from 6 to 85! – joined Dr Fowld’s team for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness this rhino collaring, including Ryler, Nicole and Lily Masterton and Bernadene Friend of Mastertons Coffee & Tea Specialists; Bruce Steele-Gray of Kenton Rotary Club & RAGES (Rotarian Action Group for Endangered Species); Gwen Young of Rhino Night Relay; Carey Webster from the Kenton Rhino Run; Sandy Birch of Sunshine Coast Tourism; Joani de Coning from De Coning Brewing CO; and Noula and Donald Maclean of Noula Maclean Photography.

With as many as eight rhino poached already in 2023, strong anti-poaching measures such as collaring is becoming more critical.

It is chilling to think how many more rhino would be lost if it was not for the efforts, continuous funding and support of the community, individuals and caring companies that – no matter how small – make a massive difference on the ground. As a follow up to the mentoring training sessions held at the end of 2021, man-tracking was identified as a skill that required development amongst the K9 handlers. Developing this would be crucial and part of their development as handlers involved in follow ups.

The course was funded by Game Rangers Association of Africa and Chipembere Rhino Foundation and hosted by Addo National Elephant Park. Twelve individuals were chosen from National Parks and Indalo Reserves due to their commitment to trying to improve their own capabilities.

A successful course conducted with a group of eager learners. Basic tracking skills were taught to the group and all fundamentals of reporting, communication and formations used in tracking were dealt with. This included: early spoor detection and patrol discipline, tactical tracking formations including lost track procedure, gathering of field Intel and track interpretation, practical SOP (standard operating procedures) with regards to track reports / gunshot reports, contact report, anti tracking methods and counter follow up procedure, track aging, operational follow up procedures, night tracking methods and procedures and the use of K9 within the tracking team.

GRAA and CRF have supported Eastern Cape rhino reserves over the years with area integrity assessments and funding for counter-insurgency tracker training, tactical night shooting, K9 handling capability, first responder first aid training and now, man-tracking.

The Kenton Rhino Run is a community-driven trail running event to raise awareness and funds against rhino poaching and was held just days after World Rhino Day was celebrated worldwide on 22 September.

World Rhino Day is a global conservation initiative and the theme this year was ‘Five Rhino Species Forever’ to raise public awareness of the five rhino species in the world: Black Rhino, White Rhino, Javan, Sumatran and Greater One-Horned.

According to the IUCN Red List, black rhinos are classified as critically endangered, while white rhinos are classified as near threatened. Just in South Africa, more than 9,353 rhinos has been lost to poaching since 2008 and there are just 15,023 White and 2,056 Black rhinos left in our country.

More than 850 entries were received for this year’s Kenton Rhino Run, including discounted groups of ten and more, as well as some donations. The event was also wholeheartedly supported by the local community and businesses, who came on board to donate their time and expertise, and to sponsor the water points, finishing drinks, spot prizes and local development running teams. Service organisations and non-profits, including Round Table Alex Kenton 210, the Rotary Clubs of Kenton-on-Sea and Port Alfred, and Coastal Kindness, assisted with insurance, marshalling and first aid. Locals assisted the ground team with course planning and marking, sweeping and marshalling, while resident photographers captured great images which can be accessed by following the links at the end.

Chipembere Rhino Foundation is delighted to thank the organisers and participants, as well as the generous sponsors and volunteers for their incredible help and support that raised almost R63,000 in support of rhino protection efforts.

South Africa is home to a large portion of Africa’s remaining rhino population. They are one of our country’s most valuable resources, attracting tourists who want to experience the Big 5.

A precious natural heritage and a valuable national resource, rhinos belong to all of us, and all of us – collectively – are the custodians of our rhino.

Sadly, our rhinos are being massacred to the point of extinction. In the face of such a crisis, each one of us now faces a personal choice: turning a blind eye, or becoming part of the solution.

Day 1:

Accompanied by Jo Wilmot from CRF and Andrew Fullerton, the HillsNek Safari Camp Manager. Andrew drove the duo over to the APU base to meet Azola, an APU K-9 handler. Together they all headed out onto the reserve where Azola and K9 Nassau completed a track with Michelle in tow trying to keep up and getting some video footage of the “chase” through bushy terrain.

The day ended back at HillsNek after an incredible lion sighting. A very welcome glass of red wine and an excellently prepared ostrich steak, complimented with the best Malva Pudding Michelle claims to have ever had!

Day 2:

An early wake-up call (just before 5am) came in the form of an aromatic plunger of Mastertons Chipembere coffee blend at the tent. A welcome arrival on a very chilly morning! Michelle, Andrew, and Jo headed out with one of the reserve’s ecology team who focus on rhino monitoring. Detoured by a pride of lions, the group arrived to watch an incredible sunrise from the mountain ridge overlooking the reserve plains accompanied by another steaming cup of the Mastertons Chipembere Blend and homemade peanut butter crunchies.

From there, with the sun slowly starting to thaw frozen hands, the team set off to locate some of the rhino population using a telemetry set (what appeared to be an old-school TV antenna to the untrained eye); skilfully operated to track the rhino. They had some incredible rhino sightings, and all were accounted for. Also spotted on the drive was a plethora of antelope, zebra, elephant, a gang of buffalo, lions, and plenty of “Pumba” (of which one did not make it in an earlier lion encounter).

Thank you to the HillsNek Lodge team that were welcoming, attentive, the food was truly tops, and the accommodation, a luxurious tented experience (not to mention the gorgeous outside shower).

It brought the annual Kenton “Rhino Run / Walk” event back to the outdoors and raised R6,563.00! Even though it did rain, everyone thoroughly enjoyed Running Wild at Assegaai amongst giraffe, zebra, impala and more. Assegaai Trails is a must for outdoor enthusiasts, with over 35km of hiking trails, diverse flora and fauna, interesting rock formations, wonderful birding opportunities, the Assegaai River, and plenty of game.

Saddened by the brutal poaching of rhino in South Africa, Storm – a South African born singer, songwriter and actress living in Nashville – was inspired to be part of the solution. Performing since she was a child, Storm has recorded music in Nashville with incredibly talented and accredited musicians. She decided to use her talents to create awareness of rhino poaching and co-wrote the song “Ghost” with her mother Bibi.

A haunting cry from the soul, “Ghost” does not sugar coat the brutality of poaching. It was recorded in Nashville and launched in November 2020. In 2021, “Ghost” was nominated for The Josie Music Awards for Social Impact. Highly respected, the awards are largest privately owned multi-genre award show recognising Independent/Up & Coming artists and songwriters.

Nathan Sanan, a well-known artist from the Eastern Cape in South Africa, designed the cover of the album, portraying a beautiful rhino with blood on its horn. Following an impactful interview about rhino poaching with renowned wildlife expert, Dr William Fowlds, a trustee of Chipembere Rhino Foundation (CRF), Storm decided to auction the original painting to raise funds for CRF’s rhino conservation work in southern Africa.

After listening to an interview with Storm on Radio Algoa in July 2021, Tanja West from Dancing For Rhinos stepped in and offered the platform to auction the painting. The online auction took place in October 2021 as part of Dancing for Rhinos 2021 Live Stream Musical Event, and raised R20,000.00, of which R14,000.00 was donated to CRF.

Says Storm: “It was an epic journey of song writing, recording an award-winning music video and interviews, but NOTHING beats having a small hand in rhino conservation. Thank you to Rooting4Rhino for helping give this initiative legs! A special thanks to family and friends who helped with the music video and moral support! Hopefully the single ‘Ghost’ will continue to give back to rhino conservation…”

Storm and Bibi came to South Africa recently to visit family in the Eastern Cape and took the opportunity to meet up with the CRF team at Amakhala Game Reserve to learn more about the CRF projects first hand. They enjoyed a Safari Drive with Dr Fowlds at the wheel to see some of Amakhala’s precious rhinos in the wild. They also met Azola, one of Amakhala’s specially trained K9 handlers, and K9 Nassau, who provided an insightful demonstration of Nassau’s specialised tracking and bite work skills.

“It was an absolute privilege to go on a private game drive and view not only the rhino, but also Africa’s other iconic wildlife in their natural habitat. The best part about this trip was getting a first hand look at how the anti-poaching unit lives and trains. What an eye-opening experience. The work that they put into rhino and wildlife conservation is immeasurable and I am forever thankful for all that they do. I have had the privilege of growing up and seeing this iconic species in the wild and I hope future generations can have this privilege too. The rhino cannot be just a memory – a ghost!”
