As the holiday season approaches, a magical transformation is happening outside our windows. The crisp winter air, the serene blanket of snow, and the peaceful quiet of nature beckon us to step out and explore. Remember to play outside this holiday break!

With the drop in temperatures, it’s important to dress in layers when you venture out. Wear warm and comfortable footwear, and be aware of the terrain, as winter affects the conditions of trails. Be sure to have the right gear, including hand warmers, reflective clothing, or headlamps.

Year-round Guidebooks

Guidebooks from AdventureKEEN provide weather information, along with some notes concerning gear and clothing, so that readers can enjoy the outdoors all year long.

Top Trails: Yellowstone & Grand Teton National Parks provides winter activity information. Snowmobiling in the park is possible with permits; a lottery starts September 1st. Starting in November, permits can be used to rent snowmobiles or bring your own. Guided tours with snow vehicles are also an option. Skiers and snowshoers don’t need guides for the groomed and ungroomed trail options.

Afoot & Afield: Denver, Boulder, Fort Collins, and Rocky Mountain National Park provides detailed descriptions of hikes and labels trails that are suitable for snowshoeing and skiing in the winter.

Backpacking Idaho provides information on when trails are open in the remote Idaho wilderness. While most trails are open from July to October, the book features one trail that is open all year (except during snowstorms) and another that is open from May to November.

60 Hikes within 60 Miles: Minneapolis and St. Paul includes some skiing trails. 60 Hikes within 60 Miles: Cleveland labels maps for ski resorts near trails, sledding hills, and ice-skating areas.

The Minnesota Adventure Weekends guidebook provides detailed winter recreation options. It supplies information on over 20 miles of groomed trails for cross-country skiing, snowboarding, and skiing at a park near a campground, as well as more than 40 miles of groomed trails for fat biking (that share the path with snowshoers and cross-country skiers). It also mentions a trail for snowmobiling in the winter and describes resources for winter camping.

Books in the Finders series, such as Winter Weed Finder and Winter Tree Finder, provide detailed information to identify species in winter months. Also, Rocky Mountain and Pacific Coast Mammal Finders, Bird Finder, and Track Finder can make winter hiking or walking more of an exploration of what you see in the snowy landscape.

Embrace the Adventure

This holiday season, give yourself the gift of outdoor exploration. Whether snowshoeing through silent forests, capturing the perfect winter sunrise, or observing wildlife in their snowy habitats, the great outdoors offers endless opportunities for adventure and rejuvenation. Discover new ways to appreciate the beauty of the season and create lasting memories in nature’s winter playground this holiday break.

Small Business Saturday, which celebrates shopping small and local, happens every year following Thanksgiving Day. The day reminds us of the vital role played by small businesses in the community, and it especially highlights independent bookstores. Indie bookstores don’t just sell books—they are also hubs that foster connections.

Established in 2010, Small Business Saturday was a response by American Express to the recession. It was created to offset the large-scale commercial events of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Its primary goal is to encourage consumers to “shop small” and support local businesses. For independent bookstores, this initiative is essential to showcase their unique offerings and compete with larger retail chains and online giants.

In 2023, US consumers reported spending an estimated $17 billion at independent retailers and restaurants on this day alone. This figure demonstrates a growing support for local businesses and the event’s increasing influence since it began.

Independent Bookstore Communities

Independent bookstores play a crucial role in their communities, offering more than just books. They serve as gathering spaces for literary events, book clubs, and author signings. These stores often curate their selections carefully, providing personalized recommendations that algorithms can’t match. Local shops also contribute to the local economy by creating jobs and keeping money within the community.

Despite facing challenges from online retailers and large chains, independent bookstores have shown resilience. The Indies First campaign, promoted by the American Booksellers Association since 2013, has been instrumental in rallying support for these stores during Small Business Saturday. This initiative has led to festive events, sales, and author appearances nationwide, effectively bringing communities together and kickstarting the holiday shopping season.

AdventureKEEN’s Shop Local, Live Local Campaign

AdventureKEEN has demonstrates its commitment to independent bookstores through initiatives like Shop Local, Live Local. This program encourages people to shop local all year long and provides a donation to the Book Industry Charitable Foundation (Binc). This 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, established in 1996, coordinates charitable programs to strengthen retailers of books and comic books.

In 2024, AdventureKEEN donated $10,000 to Binc to help indie bookstores in need.

Shop Small This Holiday Season

Readers can support independent bookstores and AdventureKEEN this Small Business Saturday by participating in events such as author signings and outdoors-themed workshops, as well as by purchasing books.

Small Business Saturday offers a unique opportunity to celebrate and support independent bookstores in our communities. By choosing to shop at local businesses and selecting books from publishers like AdventureKEEN, consumers not only enrich their own lives but also contribute to the vibrancy of their local economies and literary landscapes.

As we approach this year’s Small Business Saturday, let’s remember the power of our purchasing decisions. Every book bought from an independent bookstore is an investment in your community’s culture, knowledge, and future. AdventureKEEN’s commitment to outdoor exploration and nature appreciation adds another layer of value, encouraging readers to connect with the world around them.

Spending time outdoors is vital in this digital world. Nature offers many benefits that contribute to our well-being, from physical health improvements to mental clarity and emotional balance. These outdoor experiences can enrich our lives in many ways, and it is important to preserve our natural spaces. Be sure to vote for nature when looking at a ballot. From local park funding to national conservation efforts, every vote counts in shaping the future of our environment.

Physical, Mental, and Emotional Health Benefits

Spending time out in nature has been linked to numerous physical health benefits. Studies have shown that spending time outdoors can lower blood pressure, reduce the risk of heart disease, and improve overall physical fitness. Activities like hiking and biking in natural settings contribute to better physical health.

Nature has a profound impact on our mental health as well. Research indicates that spending time in natural environments, such as while birding, paddling, or simply walking, can reduce stress, anxiety, and symptoms of depression. Nature’s calming effect can also improve mood, increase attention span, and enhance overall cognitive function.

Economic Advantages and Outdoor Space Challenges

Preserving natural areas can have significant economic benefits. Well-maintained outdoor spaces can increase property values, attract tourism, and create jobs in outdoor recreation and conservation sectors. Additionally, the ecosystem services provided by natural areas, such as air and water purification, can result in substantial cost savings for communities.

Our outdoor spaces face numerous challenges, including climate change, habitat destruction, and pollution. These issues threaten biodiversity, ecosystem stability, and the overall health of our planet. Neglecting environmental problems can lead to irreversible damage to natural areas. This may result in the loss of recreational spaces, decreased air and water quality, and negative impacts on wildlife populations. Understanding these challenges is crucial for making informed voting decisions.

Historical examples demonstrate the power of voting in favor of environmental protections. The establishment of national parks, the Clean Air Act, and the Endangered Species Act are all results of public support and legislative action. These successes highlight the tangible impact that informed voting can have on our natural world.

What You Can Do

Preserving our natural spaces and recognizing nature’s benefits are crucial for the well-being of individuals, communities, and the planet as a whole. By understanding the importance of voting for outdoor initiatives and actively engaging in nature advocacy, we can play a vital role in protecting and enhancing our environment. Let us remember that every vote, every action, and every moment spent in nature contributes to a healthier, more sustainable world.

Consider taking these steps to support our natural world:

  • Register to vote, and stay informed about environmental issues on your ballot.
  • Spend time in nature regularly and observe its benefits firsthand.
  • Get involved with local conservation efforts or environmental organizations.
  • Share your experiences and knowledge about the outdoors with others.
  • Adopt sustainable practices in your daily life.

Together, we can make a difference in preserving and enjoying the natural world around us. Let’s vote for the outdoors and embrace nature’s countless benefits.

San Francisco’s stairways vary in length, width, location, and material. Some stairs are crooked, straight, narrow, or grand. Some are popular and well-known, while others are a secret, hard to find, and contain no signage. What these whimsical connectors have in common, however, is the artistic interest they bring to this hilly city.

Stairway Walks in San Francisco can help determine which steps you want to enjoy. The 10th edition of the beloved guidebook by Mary Burk and Adah Bakalinsky will be released in October of this year. Below are three stairway walks chosen to showcase this special occasion, including a staircase dedicated to Adah.

New Additions

There are four new walks in this latest edition. One of these is found in the Financial District & Downtown: Garden Biodiversity at Salesforce Park (Walk 38) chapter. To begin this walk, you take a gondola ride, elevators, or moving stairways to reach an elevated urban oasis that opened in 2019.

While this walk doesn’t include a stairway as a main focal point, it does include a bamboo garden, lush plantings, a fountain, restaurants, a children’s playground, and an amphitheater. There are two walks that connect to this area, The Blue Greenway (Walk 29) and Yerba Buena Cove, Telegraph Hill & Chinatown (Walk 1).

Connected Favorites Walk

The two authors have shared some of their favorite stairs, and they just so happen to be close enough together that you can connect the paths through Further Ramblings.

Adah’s favorite is the Moraga Stairway, the lead steps featured in the Golden Gate Heights chapter (Walk 11). At the end of this walk, you can continue to Mary’s favorite, the Hidden Garden Steps, just a block away from where this adventure starts and ends.

The Moraga Stairway and the Hidden Garden Steps were both tiled by well-known artists Colette Crutcher and Aileen Barr—Moraga in 2004 and Hidden Garden in 2013. The two artists will finish another installation, the Burnside Stairway, in 2024.

Adah’s Stairway

In 2011, a stairway was dedicated to Adah by the City of San Francisco. Adah’s Stairway is located on the south side of Waller Street between Broderick Street to Buena Vista Avenue East. This stairway is featured in three walks in the book. The Upper Haight (Walk 30), where the stairs are located, connects to Twin Peaks Foothill (Walk 17), Upper Market (Walk 18), Corona Heights (Walk 19), and the harder Four Hills (Walk 27). Adah was also honored by the former mayor in the forward of the eighth edition (2014): “As a former mayor of San Francisco and now as lieutenant governor of California, my work includes civic management, promoting civic pride, and honoring civic-minded individuals. Ten years ago, as mayor, I honored Adah Bakalinsky for her work in bringing neighborhoods together through her book, Stairway Walks in San Francisco. Now, San Francisco City Guides organizes stairway walks every year in May to get people out to enjoy all that this wonderful city has to offer.”

The 10th edition of Stairway Walks in San Francisco not only celebrates these beloved classics but also introduces new routes for both locals and visitors to explore. Whether you’re a walking enthusiast or just curious, these stairway walks offer a fresh way to experience San Francisco step by step. Don’t miss out on discovering these hidden gems and diving into the unique history and beauty each walk provides.

Excitement is in the air with the approach of Pacific Crest Trail Days—a premier summer festival celebrating hiking, camping, backpacking, and outdoors stewardship. Renowned author Becky Ohlsen, known for Backpacking Oregon and several other Oregon titles, will be joining the event with AdventureKEEN.

The Backpacking series highlights the best trips for backpackers to experience the stunning beauty of various states. These curated adventures range from three-day excursions to two-week journeys, ensuring something for every outdoors enthusiast looking to explore and appreciate an area’s natural splendor.

How to Use the Guides

Backpacking Oregon, along with six other books in the series, provides information on scenery, solitude, difficulty, mileage, elevation gain, trip lengths, shuttle mileages, map(s), best seasons, permits and rules, contacts, special attractions, challenges, tips and warnings, possible itineraries, and best shorter alternatives—all tailored to the featured landscape.

General Backpacking Guidelines

The general guidelines provided in each book contain state-specific information, as well as a review of the general principles of backpacking; however, according to Becky, “Anyone contemplating an extended backpacking vacation will (or at least should) already know about equipment, Leave No Trace principles, conditioning, selecting a campsite, first aid, and all the other aspects of this sport.”

Additional Information

Regional dangers are addressed. The subject of bears is reviewed in a few of the books, as well as precautions that should be taken in relation to hunting seasons, the wilderness, mosquitoes/ticks, and poisonous plants.

Leave No Trace is made up of seven principles. These are to plan ahead and prepare, travel and camp on durable surfaces, dispose of waste properly, leave what you find, minimize campfire impacts, respect wildlife, and be considerate of others.

REVIEWS

Here are a few five-star reviews of books in the series:

Backpacking California

“I LOVE this book! As an avid backpacker, I’m always researching new spots. This book has high-quality color photos, is very thorough, and has a lot of useful info. This book covers the whole of California and is a great resource to have. I highly recommend it for all Californians or visitors to California who are backpackers, hikers, and explorers!”

Backpacking Washington

”Doug Lorain has done a wonderful job with this book. I’ve hiked extensively throughout Washington, and I still found this book inspirational. All of the trips described in the book are lengthy backpacking trips. A wonderful job was done linking trails together, providing great, detailed, honest assessments of the route/terrain/difficulty of each trip. Best of all, the book is a joy to read (high praise for a guidebook). Even when not planning a trip, you’ll enjoy thumbing through it, dreaming of future trips. A must-have for anyone who wants to plan a great backpacking trip in Washington—period.”

Backpacking Oregon

“This is an excellent collection of backpacking ideas. It is easy to find your next great adventure because the book is organized by best month to hike, trail difficulty, length of days, and location. I can hardly wait!”

Adah Bakalinsky first wrote Stairway Walks in San Francisco in 1984 as a guidebook to the network of colorful paths in the Golden Gate City. After Adah met Mary Burk, the two eventually began walking together as coauthors of subsequent editions. The latest edition of the book will not only be published this fall, but a new tiled stairway, designed by famed artists, will also be unveiled.

Adah Bakalinsky at Lincoln Park Stairway

Stairway Origins

The city of San Francisco was laid out in a grid pattern, and the stairways were created as shortcuts. The many hills made grading the streets difficult; often, when a street would end, stairs would be built. There are at least 682 stairways in the city limits.

The Fillmore Street Steps, some of the steepest in the city, were built in 1915. The Oakhurst Lane stairway is one of the longest, climbing some 290 feet. The Esmeralda Stairs contain slides that are 40 feet long, located in the middle of the three-block-long staircase.

Not Stairways Forever

According to sfstairways.com, at least 16 stairways are currently closed, are inaccessible, or have been demolished. Some of these stairways are fenced off, have had gates installed, are completely overgrown or covered in dirt and plants, or have been torn down. Some stairways have temporarily closed after cars have driven down them by mistake. At the Sanchez Stairs, a car flipped upside down and landed on a tree in July 2023. The car had been stolen, and the hijackers fled the scene.

Burnside Mural and Tiled Stairway

In 2020, Renee Berger, who leads guided stairway walks for the public library, noticed the Burnside location and wanted to install a mural and tiled stairway there. She suggested that the project represent the history of the area and honor the Gum Tree Girls—three women who, in the 1960s, stopped the construction of a freeway that would have destroyed their neighborhood. At the time the artwork was completed in 2022, one of the three women still lived in the neighborhood, and she enjoyed gazing at the mural from her living room before she passed away the next year.

Aileen Barr and Colette Crutcher, well-known mosaic artists, are designing the tiled stairway. The two have collaborated on many different stairway projects in San Francisco in the past 15 years, beginning with the 16th Avenue Steps project. The artists are creating a stream with fish, birds, and wildflowers along the bank while capturing an orange-and-yellow sun. The stream will reflect the Islais Creek in the mural. Aileen and Colette have tiled some of Adah and Mary’s favorite stairways.

Updated Edition

Hundreds of public stairways traverse San Francisco’s boundless hills, revealing scenic vistas and linking colorful, diverse neighborhoods. Since 1984, Stairway Walks in San Francisco has helped urban explorers discover the best of the City by the Bay via riser and handrail. The 10th edition of Stairway Walks in San Francisco: The Joy of Urban Exploring will be released this fall.

Mary, who has now taken over Adah’s work, once asked Adah what she wanted people to get out of the book. Adah replied, “[I] want people to remember that walking and appreciating the world around you is free, and it is a beautiful expression of freedom to just get out and roam.”

Or, the art of racing the rain

By Becky Ohlsen

Nobody expects to stay perfectly warm and dry when camping in a rainforest. The clue is right there in the name. But I didn’t anticipate that my first week of researching a shiny new edition of Top Trails: Olympic National Park & Vicinity would coincide with an atmospheric river. If you’ve never heard the term, an atmospheric river is basically an airborne channel of water that carries, on average, twice the flow of the Amazon. When this giant river in the sky hits an obstacle, such as a mountain range — boom, torrential downpour.

I had expected some rain, of course, so I’d brought along a huge brown tarp, which I fastened with extra shoelaces to the back of the car, like a hero’s cape. (Some people have car-specific awnings that are designed just for this purpose, but my budget is more “duct tape” than “Dyneema.”)

Even with a tarp, when it’s raining that hard, you have to hustle if you don’t want to get soaked while you’re setting up camp. I partially succeeded. And the cape gave me space to brew some tea and sit reading a book without getting too drenched.

The next day, though, I had trails to hike! It’s possible to hike in a torrential downpour, but it’s not super fun, and it’s hard to take notes and photos. So I took advantage of another neat feature of the Olympic Peninsula’s geography: the rain shadow. This happy term refers to the fact that on other side of the mountains, after the clouds have deposited all their moisture, it’s usually warmer and drier. It was!

I spent a few days investigating trails I had been saving for later – the Dungeness Spit, for example, and a place called “The Cove” in the Salt Creek recreation area, then Staircase Rapids along the Skokomish River. (If you peek at a map, you’ll see that these are not really “on the way” to anywhere or to each other. Flexibility or chaos? You decide!)

Then the weather calmed down and I went back into the rainforest, where it was raining, of course, and beautiful, and every color of green you could imagine. Right on schedule!

Many people are planning their summer getaways, and the Top Trails guidebooks can help! In this series, our expert authors describe the trails that are worth your time. Whether you’re looking for hikes with high elevations, child-friendly terrain, lake views, or cool-and-shady paths, these guidebooks narrow down the options for you.

Organization

The guidebook is broken down by the Region, Areas, and Trails. The Region shows the entire section that the book covers. It gives an overall map that displays which territory is covered in each chapter. After the map, there is a quick reference table, the Trail Features Table, that provides a quick list and visual of what each hike has. The list is in alphabetical order and contains the page number, difficulty, length, type of trail (loop, out0-and-back, point-to-point), uses and access, terrain, flora and fauna, exposure, and others.

A trail legend from the Top Trails guidebook series.

The Areas section is the Region broken down and is what each chapter is about. It gives an area overview that includes permit information, trail summaries, area map, and a Trail Features Table with just the trails in that area.

The Trails section is the “basic building block for the Top Trails guide.” This includes a trail map, trail descriptors such as difficulty, length, and other data, narrative trail text, and trail milestones, providing turn-by-turn trail directions. Additional information provided is an elevation profile, trail options, highlights, and teasers.

Choosing a Trail

When choosing a trail, you are presented with location, features, season and condition, difficulty, vertical feet, and surface type. Each chapter begins with a map, and a features table. The top trails are chosen because of one or more features that are displayed in the table. The season and condition section describes the current condition of the trails in particular seasons. For example, an exposed, low-elevation may be your taste in the spring, but too hot in summer.

A mountain view picture from Top Trails series.

The difficulty is described on each trail on a scale of 1-5. The scale is based on the length, elevation change, trail quality, and exposure. The ratings are based on somewhat active, able-bodied adults of someone who is using the trail for hiking. Use this basis to the best of your knowledge and adjust accordingly. It is important to use both, trail length and elevation change when picking a trail. The average rule is to plan on it taking one hour for every 2 miles, and then add an hour for every 1,000 feet elevated. An additional elevation profile image is included for the hikes with more than 1,000 feet gained.

Award-Winning

The National Outdoor Book Award was given to the Top Trails Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks for the Guidebook Category.

“If this year’s winner of the Guidebook Category is any indication, Top Trails are top notched guidebooks.  Top Trails Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks is a guidebook with a lot of moxie.  It’s exceedingly well organized.  The maps are uncluttered and easy to use.  And introductory charts help you identify suitable trails.  In addition to the book’s smart design, Andrew Dean Nystrom has done a splendid job of researching and writing about the trails.” 2005 NOBA

Mike White won the Benjamin Franklin Award for Travel Guides for his Top Trails Lake Tahoe guidebook. The Independent Book Publishers Association Benjamin Franklin Award program has over 170 book publishing professionals who help, such as librarians, bookstore owners, reviewers, designers, publicity managers, and editors. Over fifty categories recognize excellence in book editorial and design and are one of the highest national honors for independent publishers.

School is almost out, and the season of camping with kids is near. We have the perfect guide for the before and during, whether you have camped as a child, an adult, or not at all. Camping with Kids: The Complete Guide to Car, Tent, and RV Camping covers step-by-step instructions that guide readers to a fun camping experience and lasting family memories.

Author Goldie Gendler Silverman did not grow up camping. While she loved to run on trails as a kid in nearby parks, it wasn’t until Goldie was in college that she and her future husband began cooking outside in parks and by lakes. This eventually led to camping, then backpacking. She has even written another book about backpacking with babies and small children. Today, she calls herself a camping grandmother. She wants people to know that, “You don’t have to camp as a child to be a camper as an adult…[,] reluctant children can grow up to be enthusiastic campers…[, and] some of the lessons you try to instill in your children don’t show up until many years later.”

camping with kids book and features

The book features Expert’s Advice, Imaginary Camping, Helping Hands, Quick Quiz, and Checklist notes throughout the chapters, plus sidebars highlighting essential information and ideas. Imaginary Camping is when the information provided is helpful for you to picture yourself in a specific camping situation. Quick Quiz provides alternatives to a decision needing to be made, and Helping Hands is an activity that children can help with. The Expert’s Advice comes from interviews with people with all different types of experience. Goldie talked with more than 100 people, including parents, strangers at an RV show, safety experts, salespeople at outdoors stores, and forest rangers.

Chapters are broken down into Starting Out, which covers Why Camp? What’s in this Book? What Kind of Camper Am I? and How Can I Prepare My Family? The guide then goes into Planning Your Trip; The Real Thing; Staying Safe, Sound, and Happy, which covers what happens when things don’t go as planned; and Beyond Camping: Leaving the Car Behind. There are even some specific resources for RVing, Equipment, Environmental Protection, Safety Information, and Websites for Kids.

The book includes resources for Disabled Campers, pointing readers toward places that can offer equipment and/or programs. Easter Seals Society helps kids with physical disabilities succeed by offering camps and equipment. The National Center on Physical Activity and Disability (currently National Center on Health, Physical Activity and Disability) aims to help people increase participation in all physical and social activities. The Disabled Sports USA (or currently Move United) helps youth and adults to develop independence and confidence through participation in recreation, competition, and education programs in sports.

So, if you are considering camping with your kids, this book is for you. This inspiring guide offers enthusiastic information to fully prepare you for the type of adventure you’re looking for.

Night sky at dusk, Earth Hour March 23rd

Together in darkness, we illuminate the path toward sustainability and environmental stewardship.

While many of us know Earth Day as a time when we’re encouraged to take care of our environment, not everyone is aware of Earth Hour—when we’re invited to participate together as a community to do something positive for our planet.

Turn Off the Lights, Turn On the Future

Earth Hour is an international movement organized by the World Wildlife Fund. Since its start in 2007, the observance happens every year in late March. The purpose is to encourage people to turn off their lights for one hour (starting at 8:30 p.m.) to create some action towards protecting and advocating for Earth. This year, Earth Hour falls on March 23rd, so start thinking about what you can do to honor our planet for 60 minutes that day.

The first Earth Hour was celebrated on March 31, 2007, in Sydney, Australia, with more than 2.2 million people turning off their lights to show the government they were concerned about climate change. The second one grew to 50 million people in 35 countries and included two significant landmarks shutting off their lights—the Golden Gate Bridge and the Colosseum.

Massive Impacts

Since then, Earth Hour has had massive accomplishments. The awareness has resulted in people-powered laws and legislative change, as well as land, water, and forest protections, making it one of the most significant environmental movements. The latest campaign surpassed its target goal, giving 60,000 hours back to Earth from 190 countries. Earth Hour is more than just turning the lights off for one hour; it is an environmental call to action.

There are many ways to become involved and take part in Earth Hour. The first thing you can do is turn off the lights. Some other ways to participate are preparing a meal with zero waste, choosing a planet-friendly restaurant, or starting a vegetable garden. Other ideas range from watching a nature documentary, visiting an exhibit about our planet, connecting with nature, or walking or riding a bike instead of driving a short distance.

Make Every Hour Earth Hour

Stargazing is also listed as something positive to do, and we have a few guidebooks to the stars that are perfect for your Earth Hour.
