From time to time I write about protecting your self and family in cold weather assuming you are in a modern house and have all the conveniences. However, here in the mountains, it is colder and many people with children are living in old houses, or trailers that are poor protection from the expected bitter cold moving our way.

If your primary heat source, such as a wood stove is at one end of the house, the other end is cold. This is usually the bedroom. Wrong thinking to just snuggle up. Cold affects children and the elderly more so than the mid range adults ensconced in front of the wood stove.

Then again you might not have a wood stove with a clean stovepipe. A clogged stovepipe pushes carbon monoxide back through the stove and you die. The children and old Aunt Mary just freeze to death. This is a serious issue.

There is no reason that the children and elderly cannot be in the heated room. There are some cautions: first do not line up the beds feet to the wall, as heat goes to cold. Ankles have thin veins and cold impedes blood flow. Mattresses above the cold flooring actually do not insulate well, more cold is pulling the heat from the body. You do better placing the mattress on the floor. Old worn out sleeping bags, old blankets, horse blankets, and potato sacks, can insulate the prone body. Probably an excellent item is the “ HOT HANDS” And other similar chemical rub warmth works fine in a sleeping bag at the feet. I note that there are bigger package heaters in the hunters section of Wal*Mart. Peel the outer orange cover off and any inside layer exposing the bag full of crystals, rub vigorously and in a few minutes you have gentle heat.

Does anyone remember the country singer: Little Jimmy Dickens singing “ At the foot of the bed”? This was a lament, but he sung about bed-wetting and it is better at the foot of the bed than with a passel of kids in the middle.

For the outdoor person in the woods where you have to spend the night you can cut a lot of pine tips, build a fire of the ends that are thick on the ground and when the fire is out you will have a semblance of heat, or at least warmth. Place the tips up and make a thick mattress. You can also cover yourself in tips and leaves for protection.

Clean dry wool socks and long johns need be worn before bed, perhaps warmed by the stove or campfire. Socks are best worn double, wool on the outside and cotton underneath. Speaking of campfires I have spent many a night in bitter –20F cold and snow with a simple lean-to where the campfire is reflected into the shelter. If you are rich and have an electric clothes dryer-pre heat the night’s wear. Blankets too, as your perspiration, wet clothing, and bedding keep you cold.

Since I lean to the outdoors bear with me a bit. Sleeping bags have changed with time but bodies have not. Eider duck down was in my father’s day, or a four stripe wood trappers blanket. These are gone. What evolved was duck down sleeping bags. The problem with duck down is it is fading from the market because many souls cannot get warm in a feather bag. Enter now the Polyester fill bags, a bit bulky but do hold the heat better. When buying winter blankets you want wool in a heavy weight. For the same price you can be sold a non-warm blanket made with (“fibers”?) Most good blankets come from Romania and Switzerland, and are at least 4 lbs. To fold a blanket properly is to lay one blanket out flat, the other blanket half way into the open blanket, then layer the other pieces across and get double heat retention. Fold the end up under the feet. Safety pin the blankets together if you have big enough pins. Big pins can be found at store laundries and maybe on line. They are about 5 inches in length.

When sleeping 30% of body heat is lost through your head. Wear a knit pull over cap. If you have a hoodie, pull that up too..

More on house heat: The electric radiator heater is the best on the market and in this area a kilowatt is 11.6 cents. They are cheap to run and will heat a room nicely. Small fan heaters usually do not last. Radiator heaters will last years. Kerosene heaters such as the radiant type that are directional heat are great. Up right heaters work well and you can place a teakettle on the top. Clear kerosene can be bought at Wall*Mart. On average with bitter cold you will use 2 gallons a day through the night.

In the old days people would, with non-insulated walls, use tapestries nailed to the wall to reduce the cold from pulling heat. Blankets do the same if you have spares. You can cover your windows to keep warmer by hanging a blanket over the glass behind the drapes. Also you can get lots of Styrofoam for windows.

Cook Soups and stews for the family. Crock-pots are the best convenience and fill hungry tummies. Kids eat first. I remember Mom had a cast iron pot on the wood stove always filled with fag ends of meats, vegetables, and such. Any one coming in had a portion to warm up.

Bring the dog inside for heat. Children love to snuggle up to dogs. My Great Pyrenees dog at 100 lbs heats my 20’ x 20’ bedroom up quickly, and no, he does not sleep in my bed.

These are a few thoughts for the coming blizzards as shown on the weather programs. Bundle up. Frostbite can take fingers and toes. Wear gloves.

Let us assume that the idiots in Washington D.C. do start a nuclear exchange with Russia-most likely to start in the Syria region and spreading across the world. Presently there are 40 new missile defense systems employed in Alaska. Without further ado the aftermath will reach Russia and USA. All the 16 or so countries, having nuclear weapons with their finger on the button, will launch what they have.

The result is a nuclear winter. That means there is reduced sunlight and a major reduction in vegetable and grain production. Farm animals will not thrive and food shelves will go bare. This bodes worldwide starvation on top of the already one billion souls barely making it. Estimations of the death toll exceed 4 to 5 BILLION people. The Neo-cons and other extreme right wing voices in Washington DC will rejoice. I am sure Russia has the same problem.

Since you and I in this phase of world turmoil had best PREPARE, now, not next month, but now! Gathering food production resources are imperative. Those hardy souls that have built greenhouses, hoop houses, water well systems, caning equipment, wood stoves, laid in a stock of canned goods, rice, dried stores, and a generator or two with your own stored fuels for 3 years, an outside garden, garden tools and maybe power equipment like a Troy Built Tiller, have a start.

This article is directed to the reduced sunlight wherein nothing grows, or grows well, except for some wild plants tolerant of reduced sunlight. An actual nuclear winter really implies real darkness and wild plants are not to be relied on for forageing as in a volcanic explosion of diminishing dust clouds. A nuclear winter also implies bitter cold increasing and plants, such as tomatoes do not grow below 50F. Collards, rutabagas, turnips, carrots and mushrooms do better. Your diet may be limited to these plants before it becomes too dark.

Growing plants in a basement that is well insulated from the cold drafts, heated and light sourced with high intensity grow lights (assuming electricity is available) may be your best option. High intensity lights also produce heat that I discussed in my article about employing them in my solar insulated green house.

I spent several years designing and hammering nails on my solar greenhouse spanning about 600 sq. feet. This particular structure has thick Styrofoam wall and roof insulation measuring up to 12” at the roof and 6” in the walls. Although this solar greenhouse is by my design able to retain heat with the 55 gallon plastic water barrels all strung along the back wall, will hold heat in the bitterest winter months at 45F at night and warmer in the day time. My best test is the outside thermometer at minus 15F but I expect it will remain at about 40F when it is at my goal setting of minus 30F outside. Any colder and I will have to employ a wood stove, gasoline forced air, or maybe propane. However all these sources run out, the wood being the longest heat source if well stocked. So far the collards are the most resilient with no added heat sources. Turnips are second. Carrots prefer a warmer soil at about 60F. This suggests a heat tape however that is electrical draining. I try and think/practice passive heating.

For the basement you will need electricity for the lamps, heat tape, and running the furnace. The best furnace I believe available is a TARM that is a combination wood/coal and oil. You have your choice of fuels plus baseboard hot water heat, or vented hot air. This is a popular heater in Europe where fuels are expensive.

Box beds filled with store bought soils are best and you will probably need a bit of fertilizer by the second year.

Rabbits are a good source of meat that may be an option in the basement, and you will adjust to the odor, which is not unpleasant. They consume vast quantities of store bought pellet foods so you might think about pygmy size rabbits. There are many caged small animals you may wish to consider in the rodent family. Quail also do well in greenhouses and produce a measurable amount of heat.

Water is necessary and the city source of water will be frozen pipes. The outside “Black Rain” following the pressure waves and firestorms will be radioactive. That means your own well water pressure tank and supporting above ground water pipes will freeze. Drain them in advance so that when sunlight returns you might be able to renew conventional well water. You might consider the newer designed hand pumps sold that can go down 200’. Lots of up and down hand work, but it produces water. The “Handy Pump” sold on line appears the best. I will be buying this pump as I can locate it off the well casing inside my solar greenhouse, or as far as 100’ away to the house and it will suck the water right out of the well at 150’ depth. Amazing hand pump!

At this point we are considering outdated atomic bomb radius dispersion of blast, heat/fire damage, and of course radiation perhaps 7 miles from the epi-center of the blast. Let us briefly look at modern thermonuclear weapons.

A single modern USA Trident D5 series submarine launched ballistic missile can incinerate a city with its 475-kiloton warhead and there are probably about 5 warheads on each single (2 ½ MEGATONS) missile. Considering there are 22 launch tubes on a modern USA missile submarine that suggests a major city destruction of over 4,700 major populated cities.

Think about this being only one of many submarines. The US Navy wants new submarines carrying intercontinental missiles at 4.2BILLION dollars each.

All that deterrence is toward purported Russian aggression, not counting the bomber aircraft and missile silos. Let me make a caveat: Different submarines, aircraft, silos and different treaties may limit or reduce the thermonuclear missile potential, but rest assured it becomes far more frightening to consider modern intercontinental warfare than the historical Hiroshima bomb in WWII that contained only 20 Kilo tons of destructive power still turning you into carbon, or a shadow of incineration. The BBC documentary now available on NetFlix: “Hiroshima” gives real footage about the aftermath. This viewing is not for the faint of heart.

Currently Russia is modernizing the USSR former Satan missile that at a stated destructive force can incinerate a land stretch as big as Texas. Russia because of its terrible 20 MILLION plus human losses in WWII from the 3 million Nazi soldiers attacking its cities has declared “never again”. Most of the Russian forces, Army and Navy, employ some sort of nuclear weapons. So does the USA.

The SALT and START treaties (if you think that during a engagement would be followed like a chess board honor system), limit the USA and Russia to use only 5000 thermonuclear missiles when incinerating each other within a 30 minute mushroom cloud.

European news and Russian news threaten nuclear war soon.  I do not want to be an alarmist but I realize that USA Media is wrapped up in Hurricanes and elections; some critics say it is deliberate non-disclosure of vital information.

Some time back I had mentioned that President Putin of Russia had warned his people to “prepare for nuclear war”.  Presently Russia has taken great steps in protecting its people by constructing underground massive bunkers in Moscow that can contain 12,000,000 citizens. Other people are being sent to remote “safe” cities in the hinterlands.

Regrettably the USA has only bunkers stocked with food and water around the Washington DC area. These are alleged to be for the political elite who will have, perhaps the 30 minutes warning time, maybe less, with the new Russian super fast missiles.

Recent veiled threats (Russian interpretation) by the USA concerning Syria have aroused great fears. The interpretation goes like this: First the collaboration of USA and Russia air strikes has failed. The USA still supports Arab countries involved with terrorists such as ISIS. Russia on the other hand wants to destroy ISIS and allied terrorist organizations plus keep supporting President Assad of Syria.  This is a surface broad international known stance, however the oil and gas lines across Syria are in the stage shadow. All this is complicated by Iran building up its military strength with the probability of nuclear weapons. President Obama at the conclusion of the treaty with Iran and paying out 150 Billion dollars stated” we are safe from (nuclear) war for five more years”.  Enter the Chinese who also want a slice of the oil and natural gas.

The collapsed US-Russia talks on a “No Fly Zone” around targeted cities in Syria results in the Russian air force continuing bombing and the USA not wanting bombing. This is a thrust of rattling nuclear sabers on the US side of the coin. This will be the main issue after the next US President is elected.

Two neuron weapons of small caliber recently bombed Yemen. This was recorded on YOU-TUBE and reported by me in May.  Although greatly part of the big spin by the news it was quite evident what transpired.

Neutron weapons first developed in the early 1950’s are composed of (then) an atomic (Fission weapon) trigger and proton saturation.  The neutron weapon has limited destructive effect (except at the blast point) and is designed to kill people (living things) not destroy infrastructure.

Israel is painted as the sycophant of Saudi Arabia in attacking Yemen, a key state in the proposed gas and oil pipeline to Asia proper. Most of this uproar is also based on the Muslim Sunni vs Shiite divide in their religion.

Apparently this immediate threat of a nuclear exchange of missiles and other devices is questionable at this time as the national presidential elections are in full swing. This brings to mind that the election saturation of the news allows the military to focus on what they are designed to do. Another view it is all hyperbole to keep confusion running amuck.  Another view is to paint one of the presidential contenders as a war hawk and as soon as elected will cause WWIII to happen.  The only stainable facts are the nuclear drills that Russia is undertaking as well as the placement of S300 missiles and now the S400 radar directional system in Syria that would make any one tremble. (Read previous articles on this system.)

The dove side of the possibilities of a nuclear exchange will most likely be in the mid-east, the Ukraine and Pakistan-India regions with a tit for tat exchange.  The Russians have superior ICBM’s and other sophisticated war weapons targeting military installations.  The end result could be a nuclear winter.

Experts on the possibility of a nuclear US-Russia exchange would spread to other countries and result in 4 to 5 billion worldwide deaths. Keep in mind the 16 or so known other countries with nuclear weapons-North Korea maybe will be in the forefront of action.

Monster 200 MPH wind will pick you up and overboard you go. The same scenario applies to you land lubbers as to being swept into traffic which are also having problems staying on the road.

A Category 5 hurricane is a serious danger not only for walking the dog, but also for the trees, poles, roof tops, trash cans, bicycles and anything that is not tied down blowing you down. You have no option other than preparing for the storm onslaught and staying inside a safe and secure building.

This is Hurricane season on into November for which we had a bad storm a couple of years back. The current threat, Hurricane Mathew, is dithering on coming up the coast or maybe going out to sea. In any event coasties can expect flooding as the least concern. If Hurricane Mathew strikes the mainland and moves up the coast the damages will be in the billions and the insurance companies will go broke. Yes, go broke. From the last blow there was so much loss the insurance business has banded together to bear the costs evenly which means higher premiums for you.

Global climate change is having an effect on worldwide weather. England is expected to have a major freeze this winter and that means most of Europe too. Whether or not you accept this premise, the weather is changing.

So you have prepped at the close of the last major storm, BUT have eaten up the supply of canned beans and took the gasoline stored for your generator and used it for the lawnmower. The fact is more bad weather is upon us. Time to prepare.

I have been lecturing for over 30 years in this community about “stocking up”. If Hurricane Mathew hits Norfolk we will feel the effects here in Floyd. Three hundred miles of distance is not that big of a protection barrier. Roads will be washed out, groceries closed, and shelves empty. Electricity will be off for weeks, maybe months. There will be no leisurely trips to Wally World.

A 1950’s atomic bomb shelter is ideal, but they are far and few between. You had best head to the basement, or lacking a basement make friends with somebody who has a basement where all the survival foods are usually stored. The goal is to get out of the wind path.

Flooding is a risk for low land areas and you need to move to another house on higher grounds. Being in the path of a bobbling creek is nice in good weather but it will become a river of doom with the water run off from higher ground.

Root cellars make good shelters-ask any Kansas farmer who faces tornado risks.

The safest place in a city is a car parking multi level parking garage. These have heavy reinforced concrete walls and if you were to cluster with the family in the west top corner you might have good protection. This is what I advised my daughter who lives in Norfolk. If you are braving out the storm in your house or apartment pull down the blinds and shades to reduce flying glass. Stay in a closet when the walls tremble.

State and Federal buildings from the 50’s have basements. Perhaps the community emergency shelters may have wind protection. Check this in advance.

Before hand, store water and caned food. Wear heavy-duty nail resistant shoes and have on hand plenty of blankets. Do not expect immediate rescue, make do with creating your own shelter from the rains and lesser winds.

Following major storms the rats come out- human rats that prey on the elderly and injured. Have a weapon handy.

Most everyone has a generator and you think of using it in the basement. The carbon monoxide exhaust will KILL YOU in minutes. If you use a generator place it outside after the winds have abated.

Different cultures about the world have developed rituals that dispose of the human body after death. To this end I will elaborate and discuss these ways and how they differ from our customary services for the dead.

Perhaps you do not want to read this article; I understand, however it is what we all must face someday as being elderly and living out our life span as a person to which I am focusing on. There are other causes of death, some as children and some as young adults.

First off let us look at 98-year-old Grand Ma. She is long past her expected population/demographic age of 78, plus or minus a couple of years. She just goes to sleep and passes on. You the survivor, a 75-year-old son, or 35-year-old grandson assumes responsibility. Everybody has a different view to respect Grand Ma and of course a different view on the financial expenditures. Perhaps there are only women left to dispose of the remains. It becomes more complicated than it seems with just calling the undertaker.

Generally the law states the remains must be interred within 3 weeks. Unfortunately the family is distraught and everybody is scrambling for the “lost” will and last testament. Most relatives believe that “they alone” are entitled to the estate remaining, or the diamond on her hand, perhaps a favorite something or another, but for the most part the entire estate.

First is the remains must be buried, cremated, or (which is popular these days) frozen at absolute zero – believing in a revival at a later date. All of these three methods are perplexing as who will be tending the body, the ashes, or the frozen remains in a few years, a century or maybe a millennium. Overgrown cemeteries, falling headstones are not uncommon. The home burials a few years back (still legal), are overgrown with trees and brush. Property divisions are unaware of the site and to some plots, still, may contain dangerous diseases.

City deaths are generally handled by a Funeral Home, i.e.: The Undertaker; the remains transported to the preparation room. This may be for cosmetics, dressing and/or embalming (which became necessary after the US Civil War). The funeral director will offer – at added expense – these services plus a casket and burial site. These sites may be in a home cemetery, a city cemetery or a National cemetery for passed military members. There are a number of services available but at cost to you who signs the authorization. A reasonable funeral these days runs about $28,000.00. Your relatives are NOT RESPONSIBLE for this incurred debt unless they do sign on as co-signers. Unfortunately you are probably in great pain and sorrow and wanting the best wishes for Grand Ma, agreeing to the best possible arrangement.

If you are bordering on being with restricted funds you can collectively try to get other relatives to sign on the dotted line. Otherwise consider DIRECT CREMATION which in this county runs about $1,500.00; of course you can always sign on for a more elaborate service, urns and such. This may run about $4,500.00.

Although city services tend to cost more the same services are offered in the rural counties. An interesting recent new burial procedure is a GREEN BURIAL. The formalities of a casket, embalming and such are dispensed with. The deceased is simply buried like they have been doing for thousands of years letting the natural forces of nature reclaim the body. There are a few rules to this procedure in that the gravesite must be fenced. I would suggest discussing this with your physician for a death certificate vs: transporting Grand Ma to the local Medical Examiner for certification of death. In any event you really need to review the applicable statutes in your county as to a Green Burial. Funeral Homes may assist you vs: transporting Grand Ma in a pick up truck bed. Personally I opt for a green burial on my acreage; after all, there has been 300 years of residents who have been buried near by.

The history of death and the remains are fascinating history in many different cultures and societies. I demure about discussing these, perhaps for sensitivity on behalf of the reader.

Advance planning is always a good idea, and in concert with the dying wishes perhaps can be concluded peacefully..

Throughout my long span of years I have witnessed death and to this title I am writing about “what to do when death comes.” The entirety of this focuses on pets, livestock, and humans who will be in body, cared for and honored in spirit.

“Daddy! Our canary has died”. This may be the first experience of death-your small bird, or maybe a goldfish had died. Most mothers and fathers will take the small body out to the backyard and with respect (to teach respect) bury the small body under a tree. The child has learned a valued lesson. Yet, there are other pets that die, usually a dog-they average about ten to twelve years or a cat, which averages about fifteen to twenty years of life. These family friends have contributed love and affection for you and the growing children; it is now time to pay respect.

I want to address “what to do”, from a country-rural view and also from a city-suburban view. First of all if you are living in the rural areas you will select a portion of your property that is quiet, secluded, free from flooding and not constantly trod upon. A pet cemetery is created as there will be more pets in time and they occupy space that in the beginning is close to the back door or flower bed, but in time the cemetery grounds are overcrowded-caving in and probably dug up by raccoons, feral dogs and denizens of the night.

The larger the animal, the deeper the gravesite. The first one to two feet of earth is hard to dig out but once down a bit it becomes softer and the grave is quickly dug. When one of my goats passed away I dug a four-foot deep X two-foot wide grave in about 45 minutes of labor. To dig a deep grave you are advised to dig in “steps”, standing on the top step, digging out the next step then reversing yourself and dig out the past step. This ladder effect will speed your task.

I have several dog burials, all big dogs. I had learned that a 4’ deep plot was ideal based on 30 years of observance. Shallow graves will collapse as the animal becomes one with natures ways and disintegrates. Then you must haul in wheelbarrows of soil and fill in the collapsed earth.

Larger animals such as horses will often die in the field pasture and they are impossible to move without a tractor. You will bury them where they fall. Horses and cows are best buried at about six feet. That is a lot of digging and already you can see the advantage of a tractor and backhoe. The law in this state requires that a large animal such as a cow be covered with earth at least 6 inches. Cows and horses” flatten out”, and insect activity of blow flies, carrion birds and of course raccoons quickly render to natures way. However your neighbors may challenge the last way, indeed being incomprehensible to their fastidious nose or political correctness. You might consider that the effluent run off into the creeks and hollows will cause an attraction for serious disease-therefore bury them deep.

Once the plot is dug out the animal will already be in rigor and stiff as a board. Bloating is quite noticeable. If you are forewarned about the impending demise of the animal, or you are forced to kill the animal in a merciful way, you can focus the animal to fall on a large piece of canvas, or plastic, allowing you do slide the body to face first the plot and then slide the animal forward, otherwise to roll the animal the feet will be straight up and an avenue for gasses to escape and attract digging wildlife.

Again you can understand that with big animals a tractor is necessary, or perhaps a team of horses. There are “estates” for sale that includes a 5-acre plot and these plots are adjacent to or inside the city limits. Within these “Horse Farm” estates the possibility of arranging for an animal control to come out and haul the carcass away may be an option.

Five acres is barely enough for a full-grown horse to graze out in the summer green Timothy fields period of growth. As the seasons change you will need winter barns and buy hay and feed. Horses eat more in the winter.

Contrary to modern views of child raising I have often explained the transition of life into death to numerous children-now all grown and not psychopaths. Living history alone demonstrates the usage of the carcass for mans use i.e.: hide, bones, fat and meat. We must remain grateful for 10,000 years of experience. During World War II I recall eating horsemeat.

When you take your deceased or dying smaller animal to the veterinarian he will, at your request, dispose of the body. This is not burial unless there is a pet cemetery near by and you pay for the service. Your pet cat, dog, baby goat or other animal including horses and cows are gathered up along with “road kill” and sent to a rendering facility that chops and grinds them up and cooks them down into mush. Then it is poured into cans. The mush in dog and cat food suggests on the bag, or can, a picture of a wolf, a happy cat, or other wild animal you fantasize your Chihuahua is. Bon Appetite.

What is reality is that 7.6 million dogs and cats wind up in animal shelters and 2.7 million are killed…and sent to rendering plants. Where do you think all these carcasses go, to the happy burial ground? No they are processed along with the hair, hide, feet, dog flea collars and lost memories.
