3M Buckley Innovation Centre

Event postponed to Autumn 2017 - Technology You Can (Almost) Touch, Holograms & Mixed Reality (MR) in Huddersfield

3M Buckley Innovation Centre — 12/01/2017

Event postponed to Autumn 2017

There has been much emphasis on virtual reality (VR) headsets being the gift of choice this Christmas and sales of Oculus Rift, Vire and other VR headsets seem to bear this out. VR headsets allow the wearer to enter a virtual environment as part of a game or learning experience and be immersed in that environment. Augmented Reality (AR) goes further and creates a virtual object, usually on a tablet or smart phone screen from transmitted or stored data and a key which triggers the visualisation. This has been mainly used in marketing and advertising and permits consumers to see and customise a purchase before buying.

Released in the UK on 30th November, Microsoft have entered the market with their HoloLens headset using mixed reality (MR). MR allows the wearer of a headset to still see the real world but have holograms superimposed in their line of sight. Holograms that they can interact with, speak to and manipulate. Almost touch! Imagine a game where the monsters appear in your room and which if you dont get them can cause virtual damage to your walls, doors etc. Imagine a Skype call where the caller appears in front of you and that you can walk around in 3D. Imagine seeing the working of a complex machine superimposed on the real thing or the anatomy of a patient overlaid on the real person. Imagine designing a product, vehicle, building or anything where the design software can interact in real time with a 3D hologram next to you or around the globe making changes which you or your client can inspect and comment on. All of this is possible and in full colour!

Come along to the 3M Buckley Innovation Centre to experience the future, first hand and with one of the first headsets in the region. The event will offer an opportunity for visitors to hear about the potential uses of the HoloLens in Product Design, Engineering, Architecture and Heritage, Hazardous Environments, Healthcare, Training and Computer Gaming and see and try the system. Visitors will also have an opportunity to discuss ideas for possible uses of MR, AR and VR for their businesses with our design and visualisation team.

Masterclass In Additive Manufacturing & 3D Visualisation

3M Buckley Innovation Centre — 12/01/2017

If you are considering 3D technologies for your business, it is crucial that you fully understand the benefits and pitfalls and how best to exploit them therefore our technical staff and designers here at the 3M Buckley Innovation Centre will be holding a masterclass to explain further.

Before approaching the manufacture of a prototype, replica or custom item a design needs to be created and if the end result is either a photorealistic animation, still shot or a representation in virtual reality, the designer needs to work with you to ensure that the details and vision for the product are correct. Here at the 3M Buckley Innovation Centre our specialist team will provide an introduction to 3D modelling and where a 3D printed prototype is the desired end result, we will cover the special aspects of design for additive manufacturing.

There will also be a brief introduction to the additive manufacturing (AM)or 3D printing, outlining the many techniques available and how best to access them. From the inexpensive filament deposition (FDM) machines aimed at the consumer market to direct metal laser melting (SLM) machines capable of producing items in stainless steel, titanium and a variety of other metals. Using examples, we will discuss prototyping and limit-run, customer manufacture and which technologies best suit certain markets.

AM is a spectacular technology permitting shapes and internal complexity to be made which would be impossible by any other technique. However, it should be looked upon as an addition to the manufacturers repertoire not a replacement for other techniques which may still be better suited for particular tasks.

3M BIC celebrate success of first breakfast event of the year

3M Buckley Innovation Centre — 02/02/2017

On Thursday 2nd February, 3M Buckley Innovation Centre (3M BIC) hosted the first Made in Yorkshire breakfast event of the year in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire.

3M BIC facilitates business growth through a range of dedicated technical, professional and commercial support services, as well as encourages business to business and business to academia collaboration with the University of Huddersfield.

Made in Yorkshires historic merger with Manufactured Yorkshire has created reinvigorated interest amongst the local manufacturing community. Robert Woollin, Business Development Manager of the National Physical Laboratory at 3M BIC said: From our perspective it's been very successful, part of our remit from government is to reach out to local SMEs within the North of England to talk to them about their challenges and develop solutions to their measurement and analysis questions.

From a business owner's perspective I think it has given them a fantastic opportunity to meet other businesses with similar challenges to talk about and share their problems and develop solutions together.

The event welcomed over 35 representatives of the local manufacturing sector, which also impressed the hosts, as Woollin added: We are very happy with the number and quality of attendees, you would always like to see more, but today we had a room full and it was easy to talk to people after the formal presentations, you could easily get around the people here. If it had been a large event with 200 people it would have been very difficult to speak to those people."

Attendees were taken on a tour of Innovation Avenue, which is at the heart of the 3M BIC. Businesses explored the technologies and expertise available at the Centre and the University of Huddersfield to develop innovative products and services. The Avenue is both a shop window on the future and an inspirational place to bring your ideas.

The event welcomed a range of large manufacturers from the region, which Woollin described as being crucial to the Yorkshire region, as he said: Large manufacturers have a massive role to play in the local economy, not just in the employment they generate themselves but in the associated supply chains. If the large manufacturers within an area such as West Yorkshire can collaborate and grow a supply chain around them, that will add strength to the local manufacturing base. That base can then supply into different partners, and are available to supply a range of products or collaborate as a larger business to provide a wider range of solutions.

3M BICs flexible working space can accommodate businesses from start-ups to large corporates from a variety of sectors. The varying size of businesses, led Woollin to explain the importance of the Made in Yorkshire events, as he concluded: One of the biggest challenges for small manufacturing business owners, is that they can feel isolated, alone at the top of the business, with no one to discuss challenges, but this event was an ideal vehicle to share those challenges and for them to realise they are not alone in facing these challenges and can develop solutions together.

Our next event takes place at Portakabin in York on 3rd March. If you are interested in hosting a breakfast event of your own, please contact our Group Events Manager Iwona at: iwona@firstorchard.com. If you would like to visit Portakabin, click here.

3MBIC showcase Innovation Avenue at Breakfast event

3M Buckley Innovation Centre — 23/05/2016

Made in Yorkshires latest Breakfast Networking event took place on 28th April at 3M Buckley Innovation Centre, Huddersfield to mark our third event of the year within the Yorkshire region.

Silver members, 3MBIC house start-ups, SMEs, and large corporates and lends itself to dynamic interactions which promote supply chain and demand led innovation. New ideas and collaborations between academia and industry are supported through Innovation Avenue with its specialist equipment and resources.

Suzanne Bagworth, Business Development, Marketing and Events Officer of 3MBIC was delighted with the success of the event, as she stated: It's the first time weve done anything like this so we werent really sure what to expect. It was great to see everybody getting involved in the tours of Innovation Avenue as well. The fact that we were able to showcase what we do here, its just been brilliant for us, so it was a great success.

Innovation Avenue provides access to leading edge high technology facilities and services with dedicated technical support. The facilities are designed to benefit businesses in many different sectors, which includes engineering, product design and chemicals. 3MBIC also house an advanced manufacturing laboratory, which offer the precise measurement and characterisation of manufactured objects and the investigation of the manufacturing process.

Made in Yorkshire Breakfast Networking events are designed to provide our members with a great opportunity to meet manufacturing companies within the Yorkshire region with a vested interest in exploring new business ventures. Suzanne added: If you can get them to this platform, where they know they are going to meet potential new clients, suppliers, manufacturers and people they can collaborate with, it's so worth their while. Youve got manufacturer's coming that are going to meet people that they need to be working with on a day to day basis.

Additionally, Suzanne provided Made in Yorkshire members with brilliant advice on how to best utilize these events to benefit your business, as she said: Id say (host one) to show off what you have got, you might not think it's what people want to see, but you dont know that until you actually show it off. Just encourage everybody to talk to each other and talk to as many people as you can because you dont know how they may need your help or who you can potentially introduce them too.

Please visit our Events page to ensure that you dont miss any of our upcoming Breakfast Networking Events. If you are interested in hosting a breakfast event of your own, please contact our Group Events Manager Iwona at: iwona@firstorchard.com

Creating an environment for SMEs to innovate

3M Buckley Innovation Centre — 27/02/2017

Stephen Gregory, head of regional development at the University of Huddersfield and the 3M Buckley Innovation Centre (3M BIC) how tapping into the right resources can lead to innovation and growth.

Companies nowadays need to be continually innovating to survive. However, in a rapidly changing environment trying to keep up with the market and competitors can restrict SMEs, with limitations on time, resources and budgets.

Taking the plunge and investing in innovation relies on SMEs taking risks, so how can these risks guarantee success?

Its all about getting the right support at the right time.

Universities can play a big role in this, and recently more and more businesses are realising the benefits of tapping into academic capabilities to help them improve productivity and performance and progress with innovation.

Technology, student placements and specialist expertise are all aspects that SMEs can exploit. As well as the emergence of new digital technologies, such as high performance computing, the Internet of Things and Big Data. However, we are still lagging behind our European counterparts when it comes to University and SME engagement.

Approaching a large academic institution, however, can be daunting especially for smaller businesses. The University of Huddersfield, along with others, is determined to change this and is looking to pave the way for a new, more productive relationship with SMEs. Sir Andrew Witty recognised the University and its pioneering 3M Buckley Innovation Centre (3M BIC) as an exemplar of SME support and innovation in his report Encouraging a British Invention Revolution: Sir Andrew Wittys Review of Universities and Growth.

To bridge that gap, we launched a dedicated Business Engagement Centre at the 3M BIC, simplifying the route for SMEs to access academic, professional and technical support.

As a one-stop-shop it gives SMEs a foot in the door to the capabilities of its main partners the 3M BIC, the University of Huddersfield and NPL North of England, as well as associated businesses through the 3M BICs tenants and network members. In effect, all these elements address the bespoke needs of all businesses.

Dedicated business experts are on hand to provide comprehensive diagnostic health checks for businesses, listening to their needs, and helping build bespoke strategies to foster growth, from finding solutions to problems, to helping businesses run more efficiently. As well as the combined expertise of the centres partners and associates, the centre will also act as a broker signposting to external organisations with other specialist capabilities.

Technical support is provided by the 3M BIC, from additive manufacturing and high performance computing to X-ray fluorescence and surface metrology, as well as NPL which specialises in metrology, CMM programming, and bespoke measurement training and consultancy.

Academic support comes in the form of the Universitys seven schools, all boasting specialist expertise, student placement opportunities, as well as technologies, that in the majority of cases would be out of reach for small businesses, including the opportunity for Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs).

The 3M BICs associated businesses and network members act as the professional experts, that can be accessed through 1-2-1 sessions, as well as events provided through the Centres Business Growth Forum. Expertise includes: HR, legal, PR & marketing, cyber-security, business consultancy, import & export, funding and mentoring.

Taking that next step to innovation and business growth can be overwhelming, but knowing where to find the support and connections to suit your needs is certainly a step in the right direction to business success and longevity.

For more information about the Business Engagement Centre, contact Stephen Gregory on S.Gregory@hud.ac.uk or call 01484 505640.

MMN Digital Manufacturing Event

3M Buckley Innovation Centre — 11/09/2017

The next Manufacturing Measurement Network (MMN) event entitled Digital Manufacturing will take place at the usual venue in the 3M Buckley Innovation Centre, Firth Street, Huddersfield on 17th October 2017 .

The next MMN event will attempt to clarify what is actually meant by Digital Manufacturing and how it can be adopted and the benefits embraced by manufacturers.

We will focus on SMEs as it is smaller businesses who often find the challenges of introducing new technologies more challenging due to time and cost constraints, we will attempt to challenge pre-conceived ideas, to bring clarity and understanding to how you can take the first steps in becoming more digitally enabled.

There are many reasons why manufacturers should consider adopting new digital technologies as soon as possible including:

Reduce the cost of unplanned maintenance shut downs to boost productivity,
Potential pressure from higher tiers in the supply chain to share data, possibly even live views of suppliers manufacturing processes,
Opportunities for adoption of digital technologies to better understand, manage and control manufacturing processes, thereby reducing the cost of quality or energy use,
Helping to create more flexible manufacturing systems which are more agile and able to react quickly to customers emerging needs.

Adopting digital technologies does not necessarily mean designing new manufacturing processes from scratch, much can be done to instrument current systems in order to be able to capture useful data. It is the intelligent use of this data that can make a difference to how a business operates.

Register for our Digital Manufacturing event to find out more, to network with like-minded businesses and to stay in touch with new technologies and new ideas. Learn how to use data to create business benefits.

MMN Digital Manufacturing Event Draws Closer

3M Buckley Innovation Centre — 04/10/2017

The next MMN event will attempt to clarify what is actually meant by Digital Manufacturing and how it can be adopted and the benefits embraced by manufacturers.
