Every generation seems to have “that” story. The one everyone has read (and then re-read), quoted, debated, and shared with their kids. For so many of us, Harry Potter was that story. We grew up waiting for letters that never came, passionately arguing about which house we belonged in (Ravenclaw here), and imagining just how satisfying it would be to cast spells on the people who treated us poorly. So for all of us Potterheads, getting the chance to step back into the wizarding world feels a little bit like coming home. And last night, my own Harry (and fellow Potterhead) and I got to do exactly that as we watched Harry Potter and the Cursed Child bring that beloved world to life on stage. (And let me tell you – it did NOT disappoint!)

You expect a show with the words “Harry Potter” in the title to be full of special effects and plenty of stage magic – but this show? The effects blew us away. (Seriously, who knew you could literally be in awe of a Dementor?!) From the moment the show begins, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is FILLED with Hogwarts-level magic, bringing the wizarding world to life in a way that feels almost impossible. But the real magic of this show goes far beyond the spells and special effects. The real magic is in the story. Because this isn’t the story of the boy who lived. That story has already been told. This is the story of what happens when the next generation inherits the stories of those who came before them and have to figure out how to write their own. And this story asks a question that is far bigger than the wizarding world: do we find healing by changing the past, or by learning to make peace with it?

And maybe that is the real magic of this show. This play is more than a love letter to the Harry Potter universe. With everything going on in the world right now, so many of us are looking for joy. For nostalgia. For comfort. And for so many of us, these characters have become exactly that. I’ve read Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, so I knew exactly what was coming, but my heart still leapt the moment Snape (my all-time favorite Harry Potter character!) walked onto the stage. It was just as much fun revisiting Moaning Myrtle (just don’t let her hear you call her that!) But can we talk about Mackenzie Lesser-Roy?! (The delightful and talented actress who brought Moaning Myrtle to life on stage.) What an absolute JOY she was to watch! Total scene-stealer. And then there was the simple joy of seeing Harry, Ron, and Hermione again. Not as the trio we grew up with, but as adults. As parents. As people still trying to figure it all out, just like the rest of us.

The entire ensemble cast absolutely SHINED on stage bringing beloved and cherished characters to life with heart, warmth, and authenticity. The talented actors in this company were able to honor the spirit of characters we know so well while still making them feel completely their own.

Of course, no review of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child would be complete without mentioning the two incredible actors at the center of this story. David Fine brought so much heart, humor, and vulnerability to Scorpius, making him one of the most compelling characters on stage. And alongside him, Adam Grant Morrison as Albus captured the complicated emotions of a young person trying to figure out who he is when everyone else already thinks they know his story.

Lead actors often receive the most media attention (and seriously – this group of actors deserves every bit of press they receive!), but the ensemble actors as well as the stage crew responsible for scene transitions and effects deserve recognition. 5 points to the ensemble and effects crew! When an actor makes moving a prop off the stage a theatrical spectacle – you know you’re watching true theater magic.

Great Scott! Back to the Future: The Musical is in Portland, and last night I was lucky enough to attend opening night. But before the show even started (before I even set foot in the theater!), I knew this was something special. Everywhere I looked there were people decked out in that classic Marty McFly vest or sporting Doc Brown wigs. Others donned their 50’s gear. And I knew right then that Back to the Future The Musical was going to be more than a show. After all, Back to the Future is more than just a movie – it’s part of our collective cultural DNA. Everyone loves this story. (I mean, we named one of our dogs Marty after Marty McFly.) This is a story that generations have grown up with, quoted, and then shared with their own kids. And in a time when it often feels like we have fewer and fewer things in common, there was something downright magical about seeing Portland come together to celebrate a piece of our collective nostalgia. Don’t we need a little more of that right now?

As it turned out, the magic was only just beginning. Back to the Future: The Musical may be one of (if not THE) most visually interesting and innovative shows I’ve ever attended (and I’ve been to a lot of shows.) The way this production blended traditional stage acting with digital effects was unlike anything I’ve seen before. The DeLorean (yep – this show had an actual DeLorean on the stage!!) didn’t just drive across the stage, it genuinely looked like it was racing through time and get this – FLYING. (No clue how they did that – and I don’t need to know. It was awesome!) And I don’t even know how to adequately describe the way this production utilized screen technology. At times the show felt like a simulation ride, a movie, and a live theater production all rolled into one. It was pure theater magic.

However, beyond the special effects, the nostalgia, and the humor – the show features a beautiful message about dreamers, risk-takers, and people willing to stop sitting on the sidelines of their own life. One of Doc Brown’s biggest musical moments celebrates those who dare to imagine what could be instead of simply accepting what is. And while not very many of us are going to get the chance to put a time-traveling flux capacitOR (IYKYK) in a DeLorean, all of us can choose to take the chance, chase the dream, or make the change. To talk to our Calvin. To stand up to our Biff. To run for mayor. (And special shout-out to the amazing Cartreze Tucker who played Goldie Wilson! Favorite song of the night!!) The future is shaped by people willing to act.

David Josefsberg as Doc Brown and Lucas Hallauer as Marty McFly could not have been more perfectly cast. When you’re performing characters from a beloved cult-classic film, comparisons are inevitable. (Unfair – but inevitable.) But these two more than met the challenge and stepped into this beloved story with charm, energy, and what felt like a genuine affection for the characters they were playing. Together, they were a dynamic duo whose chemistry anchored the entire production.

Sometimes the theater is a classroom. A worldview changer. And some shows invite you to wrestle with life’s big questions. And sometimes…well, sometimes theater invites you to throw on your platform boots, forget the world’s troubles for a few hours and let yourself have some FUN. Last night the smash hit musical Mamma Mia! opened in Portland – and the audience was most definitely having the time of their life.

The older I get, the more I am beginning to understand and appreciate that there are two kinds of art: Art that helps us understand life. And art that helps us ENJOY life. (And both are equally important.) While yes, beneath the catchy ABBA soundtrack and the setting that has all of us looking up Greek tavernas on Airbnb, Mamma Mia! explores the themes of identity, friendship, and family, I believe the show’s highest purpose is something much simpler: to remind us that it’s ok to laugh, dance, and be happy. And ultimately allowing yourself to sing “Dancing Queen” with 1000 strangers may be just as important as coming away from the theater with a profound new insight. As a society that is more stressed out than ever before, we’ve forgotten the importance of delight, celebration for celebration’s sake, and the beauty of shared experiences.

We’ve underestimated the value of fun. Joy isn’t frivolous. It’s fuel. And an evening spent at the theater bopping your head to familiar songs while you escape into a beloved story for a few hours is likely the very reset many people need right now.

Juliette M. Ojeda as Sophie was the very picture of both innocence and unbridled optimism. And Jessica Crouch as Donna perfectly captured all of the complexity of navigating motherhood while simultaneously figuring out her next steps. Amidst the sequins and Swedish pop, these two actors (along with the entire cast!) delivered emotionally powerful and believable performances, bringing natural heart, warmth, and sincerity to the stage.

And this cast? Incredibly talented. A show built around fun and joy only works when the cast fully commits – and this cast brought the JOY. They leaned into the show’s playful and over-the-top energy, delighting the crowd with their natural humor and innate likability. EVERY SINGLE principal actor was perfectly cast and an absolute delight to watch. (Thank you for the joy!!)

I have a very special place in my heart for ensemble players – and the ensemble of Mamma Mia! did NOT disappoint. Delivering some of my absolute favorite musical numbers of the night, the ensemble players are infinitely more than “background” actors. These actors radiated joy – adding humor and charm to each scene. Their love of acting was abundantly clear in each and every moment they were on the stage. (Thank you for your performances. I know you love what you do!)

Do you hear the people sing? (And more importantly, are we listening?)

Last night, the Keller Auditorium was transformed by the Tony Award®-winning musical phenomenon, Les Misérables. Often heralded as “the world’s most popular musical,” this production proves exactly why live theater still holds a kind of magic you simply can’t replicate anywhere else. Set against the backdrop of 19th-century France, Les Misérables tells an enthralling story of broken dreams, unrequited love, and the relentless survival of the human spirit. With an unforgettable score and a narrative that challenges your very worldview, it remains a timeless testament to the power of mercy, sacrifice, and redemption.

Les Misérables pulls you into the story, inviting you not just to watch, but to wrestle with your own ideas about justice, mercy, and redemption. While this is a story set against the backdrop of a revolution, it becomes clear that the most meaningful one isn’t happening on the streets of France, but within us. Because Les Misérables is, at its core, about the revolution that takes place in our hearts… in our worldview… and in our quiet beliefs about who people are, and who they’re allowed to become.

You can devote your entire life to being “right”… and still miss what matters most. Because while law and order demand to be upheld, they are not what endure. What endures is love. Mercy. Compassion. In Les Misérables, Javert (played brilliantly by Hayden Tee) spends his life in relentless pursuit of “justice” – of law and order, of rigid accountability – and yet what his story reveals is not just the strength of that conviction, but the cost of it.

Jean Valjean’s (played flawlessly and beautifully by Nick Cartell!) entire trajectory was changed with a single act of grace. His world was expanded. Deepened. Redeemed. In a worldview absent of grace, Javert’s life became its own kind of prison. Javert’s rigid devotion to being “right” left no room for grace. And while Jean Valjean ended up knowing a life full of love and connection, Javert ended up alone, unable to make sense of a world that valued love and mercy over law and order.

When we stop allowing room for grace (for humanity to be humanity), it doesn’t just shape how we see others or how we view the world. It changes us. Fundamentally. It shrinks us. Holds us back. Causes us to forget what truly matters.

Javert’s pursuit of Jean Valjean forces us to wrestle with something deeper: do we believe people can actually change, and if they do, are we willing to see them differently? His rigidity becomes its own kind of prison; when there’s no room for grace, there’s no room for people to grow, no space to acknowledge that someone can be more than the worst thing they’ve done, and that kind of thinking doesn’t just affect others—it shapes us too, narrowing us, hardening us, leaving us holding tightly to being right even when it costs us connection, compassion, and the ability to see clearly.

This story highlights two very different men and the way grace shapes a life. One life was changed by a single act of grace: expanded, redeemed, set on an entirely new path full of love and purpose. The other was shaped by an unyielding pursuit of justice: hardened, diminished, and ultimately undone by an inability to bend. And it leaves us with a question that’s hard to ignore: When given the opportunity to choose “justice” or compassion, will we act like the bishop or like Javert? Will we be a person who gives grace or a person who withholds it in the name of being “right?” Because the answer won’t just shape how we see others. It will shape who we become and how we spend our lives.

That is the beauty and power of theater. Theater has the power to challenge our thinking, move our spirits, and bring communities together. I urge you to go see this incredibly powerful and moving production (with an absolutely DYNAMITE cast!)

I could not write a review of this production of Les Misérables without mentioning the stand-out talent of Jaedynn Latter as Eponine and the heart (and VOICE!!) she brought to this character. Eponine reminds us that while love may not always be reciprocated, it is what carries us, what makes us brave, and what ultimately proves that the most powerful form of love is the kind that gives without ever demanding a return.

One of my favorite things to do as an audience member is to watch the ensemble cast. The principal and minor roles often receive more attention – but a strong ensemble adds depth, richness, and heart. And let me tell you – this ensemble was crazy talented. EVERY SINGLE PERSON that opened their mouth could SING! Their background acting was absolutely on-point and I was so impressed with this stellar cast.

And maybe it’s because my husband is a high school drama director and choir teacher, but performing arts kids tend to be my favorite kids – and this show featured some absolutely INCREDIBLE young talent. The future of theater is BRIGHT. This performance featured four absolutely amazing child actors and kids – we are so very proud of you. We were blown away by young actor Rocco Van Auken and we know this will not be the last time he takes the stage.

My son just auditioned for his first high-school musical. What does that have to do with the upcoming Broadway in Portland season you ask? A lot. My son had always been musical and did well in his then perfunctory piano lessons. And suddenly after his first show at the Keller Auditorium, I started to hear A LOT of Broadway songs being played on the piano and noticed he was spending a lot more time practicing. Then he joined choir. Auditioned for jazz choir. And soon he’ll be performing on stage as an actor for the first time. Theater did that. It’s more than entertainment. More than a “nice evening out.” It’s inspiration. It’s pure magic. Seeing the performers on stage combining their passions for acting and music sparked something in my son. On that stage he didn’t just see a show – he saw opportunity. Community. Joy.

So, when the season announcement was made, I was THRILLED. Broadway in Portland delivers phenomenal shows each and every season, but as a parent I was so excited to see so many kid-friendly shows in the upcoming lineup. How many other kids will find inspiration in the coming year as they watch Ponyboy (The Outsiders) have the courage to write or Maria (The Sound of Music) break free and find her own path? It’s exciting to think about!

I’ve been blessed to bring each of my four children to the Keller Auditorium and watch their eyes light up at the magic unfolding onstage. (Beauty and the Beast (returning this year!) was actually my eldest’s FIRST Broadway show – right at the Keller Auditorium 10 years ago!) She and I would also enjoy The Sound of Music three years later.

And don’t get me wrong, theater has changed ME as well – because I firmly believe theater is for EVERYONE. There is something profoundly beautiful about shared experiences – of hundreds of people from different backgrounds holding different belief systems, who for just a few hours, come together in appreciation of the arts. Each and every show I get to see moves me. Stirs me. Makes me think. It’s more than a show.

I hope you’ll join me at the theater this coming year for yet another absolutely phenomenal season from Broadway in Portland.

Long live the queens!

They’re remembered because of their husband – labeled one of “Henry’s wives” in a paragraph of a history book. And we think we know their story. Who they were. How they felt. But let’s get real. History often sidelines women, relegating them to be nothing more than footnotes, or names attached to their spouse. And each of these women? They deserved the opportunity to share their story – not just the chapter someone else decided to tell. As an advocate for women, an educator, and maybe most importantly as a mother of two girls, watching six strong women unapologetically reclaim the narrative and boldly speak their truth was empowering. Because SIX doesn’t just rehash a paragraph or two from some dusty history book. SIX hands the mic back to those who were silenced by history. It’s their turn.

The first time I saw SIX, I brought my teenage daughter – and watching her walk out of that theater with her head held even a little bit higher told me everything I need to know about this show. This show is about SO much more than six women who married the same infamous bad guy. It’s a reminder that women don’t have to (and should never) shrink or be silenced. That every voice matters. That your dreams, opinions, and emotions are valid. And that you are more than a label…a last name…a title…a job…a role. For every woman who’s ever felt overlooked, unseen, or unheard – SIX reminds you that you are seen, you are known, and your story matters. (So tell it!)

In SIX, the six wives of Henry VIII step into the spotlight and make “herstory” as they form a pop group and battle it out for a chance to lead the band – with the woman who had it the worst taking the ultimate crown. As each queen takes center stage, she doesn’t just retell history – she rewrites it in her words on her terms. This show is HIGH ENERGY, unapologetic, and won’t just leave you cheering – but thinking, because SIX helps challenge our assumptions and dares us to look beyond what we think we know. SIX isn’t just a refresher in history (although the teacher in me seriously loves that aspect) ; it’s a reclamation. Enough about Henry. It’s their turn. (And yeah, we probably need a histo-remix on a whole lot of the past!)

While the premise of the show (initially) pits the queens against one another, there’s no way you’ll be able to choose a favorite. But the six women who brought SIX to life made the OG queens proud. Chani Maisonet (as Catherine of Aragon), Gaby Albo (as Anne Boleyn), Kelly Denice Taylor (as Jane Seymour), Danielle Mendoza (as Anna of Cleves), Alizé Cruz (as Katherine Howard), and Tasia Jungbauer (as Catherine Parr) absolutely LIGHT UP the stage – bringing electricity, energy, and empowerment – delivering a performance that doesn’t just entertain you, but changes you. Thank you for breathing life into history, for challenging an outdated narrative, and for setting an example for young girls and women everywhere.

By now, you (like me) know the story and the songs by heart. But as incredible as the soundtrack is on its own or as fun as it is to get to watch the original cast perform on Disney+, there is absolutely NOTHING like seeing this absolutely REVOLUTIONARY show live. Nothing.

Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I’d be able to see this show once. And yet, somehow I’ve managed to snag a seat in the room where it happens three times. Better yet? Last night, I got to not only share this experience with my son – but use it as his introduction to theater. (HAMILTON as your first Broadway show?! He’s pretty lucky to be alive right now. 😉)

And he was hooked. Drawn in. Blown away. And the world needs that. Oh how the world needs more theater kids! And as a parent, I am always so grateful to the incredible casts that proudly put their courage, vulnerability, and passion on display as they perform. You are more than actors. You are role models. And as I type this through teary eyes, I thank you. You are doing so much more than “doing your job” (phenomenally well by the way.) You are literally changing the world.

And this ensemble? WOW. Every single member of this company was incredible – performing with authenticity, passion, and joy. Every song – every scene of HAMILTON is good (I mean, It’s HAMILTON, what do you expect?!) but those moments when the ENTIRE ensemble joined together? Magic. Pure theater magic. Chills. Tears. Questioning how you ever got so lucky to be witnessing something so special.

I could list every actor in a principal role by name (and honestly, they each deserve that), but a few stand out. Kendyl Sayuri Yokoyama portrayed Eliza with not only an effortless grace, but with such strength. Kendyl’s connection to not only Eliza, but with the audience was powerful. Kendyl reminded us that Eliza’s story wasn’t just one of loss – but of resilience.

Scene stealers? Yep. This cast has those. As with every time I’ve seen Hamilton, King George always claims the audience’s heart, and it was no different this time. Paul Louis Lessard wore the crown so very well. You are joy. Another actor that never failed to make me smile every time they were on stage was Simon Longnight (Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson). When you are having fun and delighting in your work, it shows – and people know. And Simon? He loves what he does. How do I know that? It shows.

And here’s a sentence I never thought I’d say – “DANG, George Washington can sing!” (But seriously, I would listen to Kameron Richardson sing the phone book.)

It’s impossible to talk about HAMILTON without mentioning the men who play that infamous duo – Burr and Hamilton. Deon’te Goodman as Aaron Burr and Blaine Alden Krauss as Alexander Hamilton were not only perfectly cast and immensely talented, but were able to humanize these historical figures. And that matters. You watch these men perform – their hearts on full display, and you realize, Hamilton and Burr were yes, incredibly important figures in the founding of our nation – but they were human too. Thank you for so masterfully bringing both their flaws and passions to life. We knew their names, but you invited us into their story in a new way, and caused us to see them as people -not just names in an outdated (and likely slanted) book.

The absolutely incomparable (and likely largest creative genius of our time) Lin-Manuel Miranda’s book, lyrics, and music has literally changed not only theater – but culture.  HAMILTON has had a profound impact not only on culture, but on politics, and education as well. This is not just a play. Not just a moment – but a movement. I dare you to leave the theater unchanged. When you walk out of the theater, it’s with more than a better understanding of American history or the lyrics to “You’ll Be Back” running through your head. You leave with a mindset-shift. With inspiration to lean into your passion. With the call to be present and “look around – look around.” HAMILTON leaves you curious, invites you to ask questions (even the tough ones) and inspires you to take a stand for the causes you believe in.

You may sit down in the theater expecting a show that helps deepen your understanding of history. (And it does. Hands-down.) But, what you may not expect is the way Hamilton deepens your understanding of humanity. Yes, this is a story about historical events, but at its heart? I think this is a story about empathy.

The world is wide enough for people with different ideas. Wide enough for people who disagree with you. And HAMILTON allows us the opportunity to feel for and empathize with these men with fundamentally different ideas. In one show, we ache for and understand men that would even today, be on opposite sides of the political landscape. (Do we do that with people in real life?) We walk away perhaps still in disagreement, but with understanding. Like I said, HAMILTON will stick around, because it truly isn’t a moment, but a movement. (And I think it is and will continue to change not only culture and education – but hopefully how we think about humanity.)

In addition to its 11 Tony Awards, it has won Grammy®, Olivier Awards, the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and an unprecedented special citation from the Kennedy Center Honors. (There is a reason this show continues to be wildly popular. Put it on your bucket-list and go – whenever you are able.)

When you think about Wicked – the witches likely come to mind. Maybe Oz. Green skin. Popularity. Bubble travel. Flying monkeys. And yes, it’s all of those things. And yes – it’s the quintessential Broadway experience. (And in my opinion, an absolute must-see for any theater fan.) But it’s so much more than munchkins and wizards. And it’s more than the story of two unlikely friends. And, it’s also not just a backstory. It’s our story.

Glinda, Elphaba, and the people and creatures of Oz aren’t so unlike you and me. Sure, we don’t live in a magical land or traverse through life on bubbles or brooms, but each of us faces the struggle between what is easy and what is right. And like Glinda and Elphaba, each of us must work to confront the reality that we are SO much more than what other people think of us. We are more than any image or facade we present (no matter how green, or bubbly, or same or different that facade is.)

And like the people and creatures of Oz – everyday we’re faced with choices . We can speak out and speak up – or we can allow discouragement to take our voice. (Thank you Kingsley Leggs as Doctor Dillamond for that beautiful reminder.) We can allow lies and misinformation to spread like wildfire or we can stand for truth. We can allow the lure of being thought of as “wonderful” cause us to give in to people-pleasing – until who we are is nothing more than smoke and mirrors. (Thank you Blake Hammond for your portrayal of The Wizard.)

Ultimately, we all have to choose. Will we stand with the crowd or stand in our conviction? Will we stand in our purpose or fold under the pressures of conformity? Will we dare to defy gravity?

The company of Wicked (the 4th longest running show in Broadway history and winner of over 100 international awards!) was perfectly cast – and each amazingly talented member of this group absolutely sparkled on stage. Austen Danielle Bohmer as Glinda and Lauren Samuels as Elphaba were the on-stage duo Broadway dreams are made of. Using a beautiful blend of humor and authenticity (not to mention flawless timing), these two not only brilliantly brought these complex women to life, but through their performance were able to connect with the audience in a deeply powerful way.

Thank you for the wonderfully poignant reminder that we are more than what we seem, capable of more than we’re often given credit for, and that unexpected magic can happen when we choose what we believe over what is easy.

I was brought to tears watching Lauren Samuels as she depicted Elphaba feeling seen for the first time. Watching Lauren as Elphaba ignite with hope and the realization of her inherent worth – was pure magic.

During a dance number featuring the ensemble players, I was mesmerized by their palpable JOY. It felt like a gift to watch them dance. It was so clear each person on stage was doing something they loved, and their passion for their craft was clear. Their talent? Unlimited. I am so thankful for each of their performances.

As a parent, there’s nothing quite so thrillifying (😉 ) as watching your child come alive. As the curtain closed for intermission, my daughter looked at me with tears in her eyes and goosebumps up and down her arms and said, “I am SO glad you took me to see this.” (I dare you to witness Elphaba sing Defying Gravity live and not feel something!) My girl hasn’t been able to talk about anything else since last night. The theater bug bit her – and I do believe she has been changed for good.

The sun WILL come out. (Do you believe it?)

As a parent (and especially as a parent who loves musical theater), I am always beyond excited when family shows come through Portland. 8 years ago, my son Henry had his first introduction to theater when I took him to Annie. And last night, 8 years later, I was able to take him again.

Although, make no mistake about it – Annie is not just for kids. In fact, I think Annie’s unyielding optimism is exactly what we all need to see, hear, and believe in. Her story is familiar. We all grew up with Annie. We daydreamed about having the run of the Warbucks mansion, thought about our “hard knock life” anytime we were made to do chores, belted out “Tomorrow” for various family members (probably to their chagrin), and shared a collective dislike of Miss Hannigan. And that story – and those timeless lyrics stuck with us – but it’s time for them to sink in and change us. As a child, I had no way of knowing I was singing the anthem for optimism – and now I realize it’s exactly what I need to be singing.

Annie is about so much more than a little girl who finds an unlikely family. It’s a reminder for all of us that the sun WILL come out tomorrow and a challenge to believe it. The truth? Lots of days will in fact be gray and lonely. The problem is, most of us start to believe ALL days will be that way – and we start to look for the rainclouds. Annie though? Annie looked for (and saw!) the sunbreaks. Whereas we have become so adept at making mountains out of molehills, Annie took the mountains she was given and ground them into dust with her pervasive hope. I would trade all of the money in the Warbucks bank account for a fraction of Annie’s determination to see and believe in the good.

And that’s why I love the theater. It’s story and music and passion and artistry flowing off the stage and affecting change. It’s magic.

Speaking of magic, Rainier (Rainiey) Treviño perfectly embodied Annie’s can-do spirit and absolutely SPARKLED on stage. (This will NOT be the last time you see this girl perform!) And just as in real life, we are bolstered by our friends, the ensemble of orphans was phenomenal. I was blown-away by the dynamic talent of these young performers.

Most of us will never have a Warbucks-sized bank account. But, Christopher Swan as Oliver Warbucks made me believe that everyone can have and experience a shift in perspective. Christopher Swan brilliantly portrayed the transformative power of love through his moving performance.

Every good story needs a “villain.” But it takes a rare and special talent to be so-dang likable as one. Stefanie Londino hilariously (and I’ll say poignantly) portrayed Miss Hannigan’s weary loneliness, giving us the perfect picture of a woman constantly teetering on the brink. It’s unfair for actors to be held up against well-known and beloved actors who have brought the same role to life – but I have to say that Stefanie Londino certainly gives Carol Burnett a run for her money. She was an absolute scene-stealer and I wanted to see more of her. (Sidenote: Any creative theater people out there, we need a follow-up musical called Hannigan, and you know where to find your leading lady.)

While the ENTIRE CAST was incredible (I could mention all of them by name), Julia Nicole Hunter was also perfectly cast, capturing all of Grace Farrell’s warmth and patience. Innately likable, Julia Nicole Hunter was the perfect compliment to every scene partner and made a meal out of the smallest of moments – a smirk – a comment – a glance. She was brilliant in this role.

Annie, directed by Jenn Thompson, features the iconic book and score, written by Tony Award^® winners Thomas Meehan, Charles Strouse, and Martin Charnin. And it’s a must-see, whether you’ve seen the movie(s) 800 times or not. (Plus – there’s a dog – and an incredibly adorable dog at that. Way to go Kevin. You captured Portland’s heart last night!)

I wanted to share my list of the less and the more I am chasing this year. I hope you’ll join me in setting aside the crazy notions that we’ll all become perfect in the new year, and instead choose to seek out peace, joy, and love.

1. More Quiet Time

No offense to Folgers, but for me, the best part of waking up is quiet time in a peaceful house. When I sacrifice a bit of sleep for a cup of coffee and a some alone time, I find myself more rested, more at peace, and ready to take on the challenges of the day.

I created a “Morning Quiet Time” bin for myself, stocked with everything I need to savor an hour of peace, while the rest of my household sleeps. I was blessed with a handful of super-cute and oh-so-functional organizing baskets from Organizer Logic.  Everything I need is within arm’s reach, neatly (and stylishly!) tucked away. (And these baskets have proven to be life-savers around the house for storing books, Disney Infinity pieces, and more! Get some!!) Here’s what’s inside my Morning Quiet Time bin:

•  Spiritual Renewal Bible
• 5 Subject Notebook (I divide mine into prayer requests, Scripture, ideas, thoughts, and questions.)
• Pen, pencil, colored pencils
• Adult Coloring Book
• my library books
• menu planning supplies (notebook, menu planning calendar, cookbooks, etc.)
• homeschool lesson planner

I literally can’t wait to wake up this year!

2. More Reading

I hear from SO many people, “I love to read, I just don’t have the time.” I’ve used the time excuse before. I’m a busy person, and have a lot on my plate. I rarely make the time for leisure – and when I do, it’s equivalent to generic peanut butter cups – not at all satisfying or worth it. This year there will be less crushing of candies, less ridiculous tv, and less of a focus on the molehills of life, and far more reading.

I am so excited to be bringing back the 50 Chapter Book Challenge this year. My two oldest children and I will be “racing” to read 50 chapter books in the coming year. At the end of the year we celebrate by going out to eat – the “winner” getting to select the restaurant. In past years, I cannot tell you how good for my soul and mental health it has been to read a book a week.

I will post a new “Bekki’s Bookshelf” post at the end of each month, letting you know what I’ve read. You can take the Goodreads Reading Challenge, and choose a reading goal for yourself. 

3. Less “In a Minute” 

I’m not sure I want to keep track of how many times I tell my children, “In a minute!” While a wait is sometimes inevitable and not all tasks can be dropped, so so many CAN. I don’t want my kids to grow up thinking that they come second to my blog, my emails, my facebook feed, how clean the toilet is, what the verdict on Judge Mathis is, or whatever book I’m reading. My kids need to know that they are a priority. 

This year I want to give more eye contact, LISTEN more, show an interest in what interests them (even when I struggle to care!), and be willing to put down my laptop, phone, book, etc when they ask for my attention.

4. More Family Nights

We used to be extremely diligent about our Friday Family Nights. Towards the middle of 2015, we became hyper-focused on our upcoming move and stopped doing them. Once we moved, we never really began the tradition again.

I want to restore “Family Night” as often as possible in the coming year. I want to bring back the kid-friendly dinners, the music, the games, the outdoor adventures, the movies, the treats….the bonding. As a homeschooling family we are together all the time, but there is still something so special about setting aside time to bond as a family – all six of us engaged in the same activity.

5. Less Clutter

We have too much stuff. The sheer volume of our “stuff” can be overwhelming at times, and a cluttered home tends to add to my stress. This year, I want to tame the clutter and live in such a way that allows me to be calmer and happier. Here are the rules I want to follow:

• If it doesn’t work/is broken, throw it away.
• Don’t buy something if you don’t have a place to put it.
• Put things away in a way that makes sense! (No more stuffing things places to just get them out of the way!)
• Use storage solutions to stay organized and promote calm (I feel SO much better about life if my chargers, unsorted mail, magazines, etc are in a cute container rather than just scattered about or in a dreaded “pile.”)

6. More FUN

I’m a workaholic, driven by acclaim and motivated to achieve. Those who know me well (or even just a little) know how hard it is for me to relax. I rarely choose fun. When given a few spare moments, I tend to gravitate towards a business or cleaning related task. I never cut loose, never unwind, and rarely allow myself a minute to just BE. 

This year, I want to ENJOY my life – not just work my way through it. I am realizing more and more that there is SO much more to life than getting ahead and climbing that corporate ladder. I want to crank up the music, run around outside with the kids, play games, laugh, read for pleasure, write what I WANT to write, PLAY, travel, and create. I want to eat, drink, and be merry.
