]]>Six of the world’s top wheelchair rugby nations will be competing for the Canada Cup – June 4-7 at the Richmond Olympic Oval.
Hosts Team Canada will be preparing for this August’s World Championships by taking on reigning Paralympic champions Japan, World champions Australia, European powers Great Britain and France, as well as emerging force and regional Brazil, which will be competing at the tournament for the first time.
All of the action starts on Thursday, June 4, at 11:00 when Canada faces Australia, and Japan faces Brazil in the tournament’s opening matches. The six teams will all play each other once in a robin round from Thursday to Saturday to determine the rankings and pairings for Sunday’s finals.

About The Canada Cup
The Canada Cup International Wheelchair Rugby Tournament has been held biennially since 2004. One of the most prestigious tournaments on the World Wheelchair Rugby competition calendar, the Canada Cup is one of the final major international tournaments before the WWR World Wheelchair Rugby Championship and offers elite teams the chance to prepare and test themselves against the top teams in the world.

High-intensity international wheelchair rugby returns to Richmond this June as the Canada Cup International Wheelchair Rugby Tournaments runs June 4-7 at the Richmond Olympic Oval.
Team Canada will face off with elite competition from across the globe as they gear up for the 2026 World Wheelchair Rugby Championship set for this August in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Hosted every two years, the Canada Cup showcases incredible speed, strategy and athleticism as teams rack up tries, raise the pressure on defense and vie for the title.

Meet the Women of Wheelchair Rugby

Wheelchair Rugby is a unique sport for many reasons. One of the things that makes wheelchair rugby unique among Olympic and Paralympic sports is how male and female athletes play together on the same teams and in the same competitions, from the grassroots to the Paralympic Games.
Four women are taking the stage at the Canada Cup this weekend. From trail-blazing veterans to promising rookies, the best female athletes in wheelchair rugby are guaranteed to shine in Richmond.
Ella Sabljak (2.5) – Australia
Ella Sabljak has seen great success in the sport despite having only started playing in 2022. Having had her start in wheelchair basketball–where she represented Australia at the 2020 Paralympic Games and 2022 Commonwealth Games–she made the switch to Wheelchair Rugby late in the 2022 season, first joining the Steelers at the 2022 Musholm Cup in Denmark. She would then go on to be a part of Australia’s 2022 World Championship winning side.
She’s had a fairly easy transition to wheelchair rugby, as her chair skills and agility have transferred well from one sport to the other, and is developing into one of Australia’s key reserves.
Shae Graham (2.5) – Australia
Shae Graham was the first female athlete to represent Australia in wheelchair rugby. Shae’s been a part of the Australian team since 2019 and plays a key role in attack and defense when the Steelers go to their balanced line-up.
A trail-blazer within the Australian wheelchair rugby community, her rise and talent has helped inspire more females in Australia to get involved in the sport.
Kae Kurahashi (0.5) – Japan
Kae Kurahashi joined Japan’s national wheelchair rugby team in 2017 as the only woman on the roster, assisting them in winning gold at the 2018 World Wheelchair Rugby Championships. She became one of three women to win Paralympic wheelchair rugby medals (along with Kylie Grimes of Great Britain and Erika Schmutz of Canada) when Japan clinched a bronze medal in Tokyo.
Kae was also an important contributor to the Japanese low-point team that won the silver medal at the 2022 World Games in Birmingham, Alabama.
Emilie Miller (0.5) – Australia
Emilie Miller had her start in para-cycling at the age of 17, eventually leading her to multiple UCI Para-cycling Road World Championship medals over the years. After making the switch to wheelchair rugby, she won her first world championship gold medal at the 2022 IWRF World Championship. At this tournament, Miller, along with Shae Graham and Ella Sabljak, made history by becoming the first trio of female athletes to be part of a World Championship winning team.

World-class wheelchair rugby is back at the Richmond Olympic Oval this summer as the Canada Cup International Wheelchair Rugby Tour brings the excitement from June 6-9.
Team Canada will continue their preparations for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games by taking on fierce international rivals in front of home fans. The fifth-ranked Canadians will face off with top-ranked USA, defending Canada Cup champions Japan, world championship holders Australia, reigning Paralympic gold medalists Great Britain, and current European champions France in four days of fast, exciting, and physical wheelchair rugby.
The tournament tips off on Thursday, June 6, as Canada opens the tournament against Australia at 11:00 am. The six teams will all play each other once in a robin round from Thursday to Saturday to determine the rankings and pairings for Sunday’s finals.

The Canada Cup Organizing Committee is excited to announce a brand-new award – The Fan’s Favorite Award chosen by YOU!
We’re looking forward to having a new way for fans from around the world to engage with the tournament and have their voices heard and we hope the players will appreciate this new award.
After each match we’ll post a poll for fans to vote and pick a Player of The Game from each team. Polls will be up for two hours after each match across our social channels (Facebook and Instagram) and the winner of each poll will enter the shortlist that will be used to select the Fan Favorite Award following the tournament final.
The Fan Favorite Award Winner will be honored alongside the Tournament MVP and other All-Stars presented by our tournament sponsors Vesco Wheelchairs!

5 Canada Cup Debutants to Watch This Week!

It’s been a long four years since the last Canada Cup and in that time many exciting new players have emerged on the international stage. From international rookies to established here are five athletes making their Canada Cup debuts to watch out for.
Stuart Robinson (Great Britain #3)
Classification: 3.5
The powerful 3.5 played a huge role in Great Britain’s gold medal campaign at the Tokyo Paralympics and now he’s in position to take on an even greater role with the team as they build towards the World Championship this fall.
Robinson has great pace and has improved immensely since making his Team GB debut a few years ago. He’ll be one of Great Britain’s main offensive options as they look to add another new title to their trophy case in Richmond.
Cédric Nankin (France #3)
Classification: 1.5
Similar to Stuart Robinson, Cédric Nankin is no newcomer to international competition. He’s been a core piece for an improving French side for the better part of the decade. However, the dominant 1.5 is competing in his first Canada Cup this year.
One of the world’s best defensive players, Nankin was named best 1.5 at the 2014 and 2018 World Championships and has shown a consistent ability to guard higher classification players and use his strong pick to frustrate even the quickest of opposing high-pointers.
Jack Smith (Great Britain #5)
Classification: 0.5
One of GB’s newer low-point players, Smith made his Paralympic debut in Tokyo and started this quadrennial in a big way with a great performance at the European Championships for GB.
A strong inbounder for his class, Smith could have a big role on his hands this week clearing pathways, providing support and being a safe out for Britain’s ball-handlers. As a 0.5, he won’t be near the top of the scoresheet but will play an invaluable role doing the dirty work for his teammates.
Shae Graham (Australia #12)
Classification: 2.5
The first woman classified above a 1.5 to compete in a Paralympics. Shae Graham is definitely an athlete to look out for.
She’s a talented mid-point player who often plays the number 3 role in Australia’s balanced line-ups. She spaces the court well on offense and plays smart and tenacious defense on the other end of the floor.
Fuya Shirakawa (Japan #44)
Classification: 2.5
The Japanese mid-pointer is the only “true rookie” on this list. At 23 years-old Shirakawa is one of the younger athletes at the Canada Cup and looks to have a bright future.
A club teammate of the Japanese captain Yukinobu Ike on FREEDOM. The youngster has great speed and could have an intriguing international debut this week!

Team USA Withdraws from the 2022 Canada Cup

Team USA has unfortunately had to withdraw from the 2022 Canada Cup International Wheelchair Rugby Tournament due to positive COVID-19 tests prior to leaving the US. As a result of their withdrawal, the Canada Cup organizing committee has made several changes to our tournament schedule.
The tournament will continue in it’s round-robin format with each of the remaining six teams playing each other in the preliminary stage of the competition from Thursday, June 2 to Saturday, June 4. Following the conclusion of the preliminary round, the top four teams will move onto Sunday’s finals with the 3rd and 4th ranked teams playing for bronze and the top two ranked teams competing for the 8th Canada Cup in the title match!
In the current sporting and COVID-19 climates, it’s always disappointing for athletes and teams to have to miss out on an important competition and we’d like to send our best wishes to Team USA.
We’re still looking forward to welcoming the remaining teams and fans to the Richmond Olympic Oval for four exciting days of hard-hitting, fast-paced and world-class wheelchair rugby. Fans can purchase tickets online here or at the door and all matches will be webcast live so that viewers can watch all around the world.
Please note that while the Canada Cup is open to spectators, in order to mitigate the possible spread of COVID-19 within the tournament all officials, coaches, athletes, spectators and volunteers or anyone not on the field of play will be required to wear a well-fitting 3-layer mask at all times. Cloth masks without a filter layer or other face coverings such as bandanas or neck warmers pulled over the face are not acceptable.
Health and safety for all attendees is always a priority at the Canada Cup and we appreciate the public’s understanding in these times.

After four long years, the world’s top seven wheelchair rugby teams are coming back to the Richmond Olympic Oval – June 2nd – 5th for the 2022 Canada Cup.
Hosts Team Canada will take on international rivals from Australia, Denmark, France, Great Britain, Japan and the United States of America in an exciting and crucial tournament on the road to the 2022 World Wheelchair Rugby Championships in Vejle, Denmark.
The action tips-off on Thursday, June 2nd at 11:00am with a fierce match-up between Canada and new European Champions France. Round-robin play continues through Saturday followed by the tournament finals on Sunday, June 5

We’re excited to announce that the Canada Cup International Wheelchair Rugby Tournament is back this year! Mark your calendars and save the dates because the world’s best wheelchair rugby teams are coming to Richmond to battle it out for the 9th Canada Cup!
The Canada Cup International Wheelchair Rugby tournament welcomes the world’s best wheelchair rugby teams and brightest stars to compete for the title in a crucial stop on the road to the 2022 World Wheelchair Rugby Championships.
Team registration is now open and the Team Registration package this available at the bottom of this page. Registration priority will be given to teams ranked in the Top 8 of the World Wheelchair Rugby World Rankings, but the organizing commitee may accept registration from lower-ranked teams if spots remain available.
