World Suicide Prevention Day 2026

Today, Thursday 10th September 2026, is World Suicide Prevention Day.

Each year, we come together across the world to raise awareness about suicide, encouraging difficult conversations in the hopes of breaking stigmas and promoting suicide prevention.

It is completely understandable that for many people, this is an incredibly difficult topic to talk or read about, but at the same time, it is so important that we do so. Through this, we can support people experiencing suicidal thoughts and remind them they are not alone.

Understanding Suicide

This is the act of intentionally taking your own life and usually involves having thoughts about ending your life or feeling that people would be better off without you. Or it can even involve thinking about methods of suicide or making clear plans to take your own life. Experiencing this can be a very scary, challenging time for someone.

Suicidal thoughts can be experienced by anyone, and there are many reasons as to why someone may be feeling this way. Such as isolation, discrimination, financial and employment issues, trauma, struggling to adjust to new life changes, and relationships ending. These are just a few of the many possibilities that could be causing someone to feel this way, and its important to remember everyone’s experience is different.

Here are some statistics from Mind…

  • 1 in 5 people have suicidal thoughts.
  • 1 in 15 people attempt suicide.
  • Suicide remains the biggest cause of death in men aged 25-45.

Experiencing these suicidal thoughts can feel frightening and isolating.

So what can we do?

A big part of working towards suicide prevention is recognising the signs that someone may be experiencing thoughts of suicide. Whilst not everyone will show the same behaviours, you may notice them:

  • Giving away personal possessions
  • Neglecting personal care
  • Changes in eating habits
  • Self-harm
  • Difficulty making plans for the future
  • Expressions of negativity towards themselves or a general sense of hopelessness

If you notice someone showing signs of this behaviour, it might be worth checking in with them in a safe, judgement-free environment. This can be quite a scary prospect and you may be worried about how to respond in the correct way, so we’ve put together a short list of things you can say and do that may help.

  • Making sure to acknowledge their feelings, this shows that you are listening to what they are saying and not dismissing it.
  • Try to encourage them to talk more through open questions, avoiding yes/no questions.
  • Encourage professional support
  • Reassure them that they are not alone.
  • Stay with them until help or next steps are arranged.

It is so important to remember to approach with empathy and not judgement.

At Burton & District Mind, we are Here for you & Here for Everyone

If you or someone you know is experiencing suicidal thoughts, please remember there is help available…

School & Mental Health!

The start of September can usually be associated with one thing…the end of the summer holidays. Whether you are going back to School or University, this can bring with it a variety of difficult emotions. Let’s talk about that…

Whilst School and education as a whole are so important, it is completely normal to have complex and difficult feelings towards it, especially when going back after a six-week break. This could be down to several different reasons…

  • Stress.

School can be incredibly stressful, with work that needs to be completed, deadlines to meet, trying to juggle a healthy school and social life, and the pressure of meeting expectations.

  • Being around people

Whilst some might enjoy that aspect of education, for others, being constantly put into situations where they are around others and perhaps having to work with people they might not know can be quite challenging.

  • Coping with homesickness

If you are at University, you may be living away from home for the first time.

  • Dealing with bullying

For some, education may not feel like a safe space and may instead be associated with bullying.

This is why it so important to have steps in place to help look after your mental health so here a few ways you can support your mental health…

  1. Reaching out when you need help. Whether it’s a family member, friend or person in a professional setting, there is nothing wrong with asking for help when you need it. Most school settings, including universities, will have pastoral care in place.
  2. Having things you enjoy outside of education. Sometimes we can often fall into a thing of education/studies taking over every aspect of life, meaning there’s very little time to do other things, which can negatively impact your mental health. So it’s important to split up your time to make sure you are still making time to do things you enjoy/look forward to outside of school. (Even if it’s just something like playing an hour or two of a game).
  3. Don’t compare yourself to fellow students. We can all feel a bit low if perhaps others do better than you in an exam/piece of coursework, but comparing yourself to others will not be helpful and instead cause further challenges. Everyone is different, and will have different strengths and weaknesses.
  4. Try to connect with fellow students. You could try and find people/clubs to do things with that you enjoy,
  5. Trying to remain organised can be very useful. Whether that’s making sure to keep a log of deadlines so there are no surprises, banking assistance apps, or just something like a planner can be really useful.

It can also be really good to look up the mental health support available for young people/students in your area too. That way, if there comes a time when you need it, you’ll be prepared.

Additionally, at Burton & District Mind, we are looking into how we can better support the mental health of Young People in our Community, and we are looking to hear from Young People on how we can best do that.

Our Help us to Help You Survey

You could fill in our Help Us to Help You Survey and let us know your thoughts on the current state of mental health support available to you as a young person. Our previous survey was a great indicator that we needed to do more for the LGBTQIA+ community, and as such, we have greatly improved the support available and obtained our Queerify Certification.

Our Young Persons Equity Group

We are hosting a group available to Young people aged 16-18 to come and give us their thoughts, and eventually help steer us towards putting together a project.

Participants in this group will each receive a £20 gift voucher.

Here for you & here for everyone!

Celebrating 35 Years!

Burton & District Mind are celebrating our 35th Anniversary this year- that is 35 years of supporting mental health.

From forming in 1991, with the aim of supporting people struggling with mental health problems, the charity has grown and grown over the years. Now in 2026, Burton & District Mind are made up of multiple teams, all dedicated to providing the highest quality mental health support using qualifications and lived experience.

We truly couldn’t be prouder to offer such vital services and projects to our community.

Now in 2026, the charity as a whole supports around 4000 people a year with their mental health and is always looking to support more. Whether that be through…

  • Fantastic engaging Activity Projects
  • The Safe Haven Crisis Café that opens 7 days a week throughout the year
  • Various different Counselling and Coaching services
  • Future Focus helping people take charge of the changes they wish to see in their lives.
  • Signposting vital mental health information.

So how are Burton & District Mind celebrating their 35th Anniversary?

With a 35-hour Gymathon!

This means members of the team will be taking part in 35 hours of gym related activities with at least one person active during each hour.

Funds raised during this will be used to match-fund Mind Makeover Workshops, our own pastoral support and other projects in the localities.

Anyone is invited to get involved (fancy-dress welcomed) and raise funds, as well as people to volunteer as Marshals, making sure everyone is safe, motivated and hydrated!

And this isn’t limited to the Burton & District Mind team – if you know people, a group, a business, a gym, anyone who would like to get involved, please let reach out.

If you’d like to get involved, please contact fundraising@burtonmind.co.uk

Local Mind Week 2026!

This week (3rd to 9th August) is Local Mind Week, a celebration of all the local Minds across the country that provide vital mental health support.

No two lives are the same.

Neither is the support you need.

That’s why your local Mind shapes support around you.

Did you know?

  • There are around 97 local Minds across England, Wales and the Channel Islands.
  • The latest data shows that 672,768 people were supported by a local Mind.

  • Local Minds provided 1222 unique services last year.
  • 5354 people volunteered at their local Mind contributing over 270 thousand hours of support.
  • Local Minds employed 5937 people last year, and 39% of those employees have lived experience of a mental health problem.

Here is a video that highlights what a Local Mind is!

As #YourLocalMind Burton & District Mind raise funds independently to support the mental health of people across East Staffordshire, Lichfield District & Tamworth Borough.

Whilst local Minds are all a part of the Mind family, we are still an independent charity and our support is all based on the needs of local people.

Through being local we can identify and understand the needs of our community, and change our services/projects based around that. We can listen to what people are saying. For example, our Help us to Help you Community survey gives local people a voice. (Click here for our 2026 version)

We offer support such as:

  • Counselling and Coaching
  • Future Focus
  • Activity groups
  • Safe Haven Crisis Cafe
  • Mind Makeover Psychoeduction
  • Virtual Peer Support Group

Our impact across 2025-2026

Throughout 2025-2026 our Development & Sustainability Team delivered 28 projects for local audiences, for 294 people!

These projects included…

  • Burton Arts Peer Support Group
  • Eco Therapy and Re-Leaf
  • Bat & Chat Cricket
  • Mind Makeover
  • Sideways Gaming
  • Gentle Walks at Gentleshaw
  • Mindful Walking Tamworth
  • Face the world: Performance for Neurodiverse
  • Summer Events Roadshow
  • Virtual Peer Support Group

This week, we plan to have a variety of different posts talking about Burton & District Mind, and the work we do across our community with some messages from our teams.

At Burton & District Mind we are

This week, at Burton & District Mind, we are having a bit of a focus on the variety of different counselling services that we offer.

Counselling has been something we have offered at Burton & District Mind for a good while, and it gives us great pride in the fact that our counselling team is made up of many highly qualified people who are dedicated to supporting mental health and giving you the best possible care.

And this is highlighted through the feedback received…

“Thank you so much for giving me a safe space and for believing me. I didn’t think I’d ever be in the position of achieving true peace-but I have.”

“I just wanted to say a quick thank you for all of your help over the last few months. Thank you for listening to me and helping me talk through things I’ve never been able to say before. You have helped me rediscover my identity, and I’m starting to feel a sense of self-love and confidence that I haven’t had for years. I feel a sense of calm and peace and acceptance that I don’t think I’ve ever had before, and I’ll forever be grateful that you helped me to reach this point. Thank you so much for everything!”

At Burton & District Mind, it is so important to us that we provide the best possible support that we can.

Here is some information on the counselling services that we offer…

Counselling through the NHS (click here for more details)

Our NHS Counselling services are through Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent Talking Therapies, this means:• The referral is completed through them

Burton & District Mind is celebrating the success of its LGBTQIA+ Creative Spaces project in Tamworth, which has helped improve confidence, wellbeing and social connections for local LGBTQIA+ people experiencing mental health challenges.

Over eight weeks, nine participants took part in creative wellbeing sessions designed to provide a safe, welcoming space where they could express themselves, build friendships and support one another. The project exceeded most of its targets, with 88% of participants reporting improved wellbeing, 100% reporting improved self-esteem, and 100% continuing to engage in creative or community activities after the programme.

Participants described the sessions as inclusive, supportive and empowering. One participant, Dawn, shared how the project helped them overcome isolation and anxiety while living with ADHD. They said, highlighting the importance of having an environment where both their identity and neurodiversity were understood and respected.

Alongside delivering positive outcomes for participants, the project has strengthened Burton & District Mind’s commitment to LGBTQIA+ inclusion through staff development and more inclusive ways of working.

Burton & District Mind would like to thank everyone who participated, volunteered and supported the project, helping to create a more connected and inclusive community.

There are two other upcoming Creative Space Projects that will be starting soon.

At Burton & District Mind, it’s always been an important ethos to us that we support everyone. No matter their background, sexuality, age, religion, gender or circumstance. Mental health is something that impacts and affects every single person, so the last thing we would ever want to do is leave someone without support.

Over two years ago, when we last did our Help us to Help you survey, it was highlighted to us that we needed to improve our support to LGBTQIA+ people. Now two years on, we are proud to say we have taken great steps forward.

Our Expressions Focus Group

Expressions was an opportunity for LGBTQIA+ people to come and talk to us, offering their insights and experience, and instead of guessing what we could do better, we could act based on direct feedback.

We then hosted our first-ever Creative Spaces Expressions Project, which gave LGBTQIA+ people the chance to come and share different creative skills and interests. It’s a safe environment that encourages important conversations to happen, too.

So far this year, we’ve introduced 3 new Creative Spaces Projects…

Tamworth

Burton

Lichfield/Burntwood

There are still spaces, so if you’d like to get involved, please sign up today! Click here:

As a charity, we have also taken steps to provide our staff and teams with important LGBTQIA+ training, alongside other steps towards receiving our Queerify Accreditation which identifies us as LGBTQIA+ Safe Space!

We are incredibly proud of the progress made so far, but of course, our work doesn’t stop there. We are here for the LGBTQIA+ Community every day of the year, not just one month. We will continue learning and working towards making sure everyone has access to the mental health services that they deserve.

Epic Walk to Pride!

This month, Susy is taking on a massive challenge of walking a total of 100 miles whilst raising money to support the work that we do at Burton & District Mind in memory of her friend Jay.

We spoke to Susy about what this is all about!

What is the Epic Walk to Pride?

Jay’s Walk to Pride is a fundraising challenge in memory of my friend Jay. Throughout June, I am walking 100 miles to raise money for Mind Burton & District’s LGBTQIA+ projects and to help raise awareness of the mental health support available within our local community.

The challenge will culminate on 27th June with a walk from Barton Marina to Shobnall Leisure Complex for Burton Pride. I’m hoping people will join me for that final walk, creating an opportunity to celebrate Jay’s life, share memories, and come together in support of an important cause.

Can you tell us about the story behind why you are doing it?

Jay was one of those people who left a lasting impression on everyone he met. He was full of life, kindness, humour and energy. He was there for many important moments in my life, and his friendship meant a great deal to me. Following his passing, I wanted to do something meaningful that would honour his memory in a way that felt personal.

Walking felt like the right challenge for me. We would walk our dogs together regularly. It’s something that helps me process my thoughts and emotions, and spending time walking throughout June has given me space to reflect on my memories of Jay and the impact he had on so many people.

I also believe Jay would have been proud of this challenge. The charity is one that he liked and supported, which makes raising money for their work feel like a fitting tribute to his memory.

Can people get involved, and if so, how?

Absolutely. People can support the challenge by donating through the JustGiving page, sharing the fundraiser with friends and family, or helping to raise awareness of the services available through Mind Burton & District.

I would also love for people to join me on the final walk to Burton Pride on 27th June. Whether someone knew Jay personally or simply wants to support the cause, everyone is welcome. My hope is that it will be an opportunity to come together, share stories, celebrate Jay’s life and support mental health within our community.

Why Burton & District Mind?

Mental health challenges can affect anyone, but some of the experiences faced by LGBTQIA+ people can be unique and complex. While many mental health issues are universal, there can be additional pressures around identity, acceptance, discrimination, isolation and belonging.

That’s why I believe dedicated LGBTQIA+ support is so important. Having access to someone who understands those experiences, whether through professional expertise, lived experience, or both, can make a huge difference to someone who is struggling.

Burton & District Mind provides valuable support within our local community, and their LGBTQIA+ projects help ensure that people can access services that are inclusive, understanding and tailored to their needs. Supporting that work feels like a positive way to honour Jay’s memory while helping others.

What are your aims for the challenge?

My first aim is to raise as much money as possible for Burton & District Mind’s LGBTQIA+ projects so they can continue providing support within our community.

Alongside fundraising, I want to raise awareness of the services that are available and encourage conversations around mental health. Sometimes simply knowing that support exists can be the first step towards someone reaching out for help.

On a personal level, this challenge is also about celebrating Jay’s life and recognising the impact he had on so many people. If we can honour his memory, bring people together, raise awareness and support a worthwhile cause at the same time, then I will consider the challenge a success.

Thank you!

We at Burton & District Mind want to take this opportunity to also say a massive thank you to Susy and everyone involved. Your kindness and dedication are truly inspiring, and we are incredibly grateful for your support towards our LGBTQIA+ projects and for supporting local mental health.

We are also incredibly grateful to be a part of a celebration of Jay, who was such an important part of many people’s lives.

At Burton & District Mind, we need your help to shape the future of mental health projects across East Staffordshire, Lichfield District and Tamworth Borough.

Back in 2024, we did our very first ‘Help us to Help you’ survey, and this truly helped us find ways to support our community better. It gave us insights into what our community truly needs, and what services/projects could help.

One such way was to reveal our need to better understand the needs of the LGBTQIA+ community. Since then, we’ve taken steps to engage with LGBTQIA+ people, tailoring services to them, and even acquiring our Queerify accreditation with our staff undergoing LGBTQIA+ training.

The world is changing, and needs are different now than they were two years ago.

So we are bringing our ‘Help us to Help You’ Survey back for 2026, and we want to invite YOU to have your say in the future of mental health support in our community.

Whether you have a lot to say or not much at all, we want to hear it all. Your voice, experience and insights are so important to us.

It should take no more than 20 minutes, and if you come across any questions you aren’t comfortable answering, you can move on to the next one!

Thank you

Burton & District Mind

Here for you & here for everyone!

The weather had been unusually hot for May, making this week’s walk a mission of seeking shady shelter as the hot sun shone from behind a patchwork of fluffy clouds, scattered across the sky.

As the group departed from the library, out towards the shade of the Centenary Woodlands, squirrels hopped across the grass, chasing one another as a lone coot ploughed through the cool water under the Andresey bridge.

With the hot weather, the discussion quickly leapt from city breaks to ice cream with one member sharing their recent enjoyment of a Mr Whippy 99 ice cream complete with tangy raspberry sauce & sprinkles! The conversation then moved on to volunteering, with a member sharing their sense of fulfilment from recently helping others in the community. They said that helping others had enabled them to see how far they had come in their own journey.

Across the fields, the group headed into the comfortable shade offered by the Centenary Woodlands, where they engaged in a new experience, Japanese Forest Bathing. Not swimming in the River Trent, but immersing themselves in the sights, sounds & feel of nature. This involved finding a tree & introducing yourself to it, placing a hand on its sturdy trunk, feeling the texture of the bark, looking at the colour of the leaves, noticing the height, the neighbouring trees & listening to the birds sing & leaves rustle.

From there came structured breathing, breathing in for 3 seconds & gathering strength from the tree, holding it in your body for 4 seconds, feeling the energy flow through you before breathing out for 5 seconds whilst giving love to the tree in exchange. This breathing & thought pattern was repeated several times & brought with it a sense of deep relaxation, peacefulness & calm. This was just what the group needed to feel refreshed before making their way further through the woodland, spotting mushrooms at the base of a tree, sharing nutrients from the earth & listening to the gentle birdsong from birds hidden high up in the tree canopy. Being careful not to trip over the network of tree roots & hurdling over fallen branches & encroaching nettles, the group approached the edge of the woodland & were back out into the sunshine where cows grazed peacefully in the field.

Whilst walking from the woodland, back along the riverbank towards the Ferry Bridge, one member commented how the walking group had allowed them to open their mind, forget external worries & enjoy the lovely nature around them. This, they felt, was in addition to a change in mindset, to give new things a go & led to chatting about the Bowls & Banter project & the difference between crown green bowls & flat green bowls!

Under & over the Ferry Bridge & into Stapenhill Gardens, the group took a refreshment break whilst learning about more breathing techniques. They learnt about 7-11 breathing, which can provide relaxation & reduce anxiety & stress as well as the 5-4-3-2-1 Grounding Techniques & also tried finger tracing. This involved using the index finger of one hand to slowly trace the edges of your thumb & fingers on the other hand, breathing in as you trace up the finger & breathing out as you trace back down the other side. This would be repeated for each finger, synchronising the breathing with each digit. The group agreed on how relaxing it felt.  Breaktime over, the group put away their breathing techniques booklet & were permitted to give the other methods a try, noting down how it made them feel & reporting back next week.

From Stapenhill Gardens, the group took a steady walk along the river, appreciating the beautiful weather & noticing the spiky green husks of conkers, developing on the pink & white blossom-filled horse chestnut trees, signalling springtime. Conversation turned to the different leaf variations of trees & plants & how they communicate with each other (through the wood wide web), supporting each other with nutrients, warning of diseases & selecting the best years to fruit etc. We wondered, ‘how do they know’ & concluded that there are still many mysteries in the world!

At the end of the river path, it was a stroll across the Trent Bridge as the group reminisced about the childhood game of Pooh Sticks, where friends would drop a stick into the river, watching it float under the bridge to see who’s made it to the other side first. We proposed we might have a game on the Ferry Bridge next week! With that the group made the short walk back to the library, clocking up another 3.3 miles & completing the penultimate walk of the weekend walking program. Fingers crossed for more beautiful weather for the final walk next week.

Week 6 – 16/05/26

This week took the group back up to the Winshill Water Tower, following the Brizlincote Nature Walk. The group started out across the wetlands & passed over the Trent Bridge. There was lots of activity at the boathouse with rowers diligently preparing to set off down the river. What looked to be a cormorant flew swiftly overhead whilst a pigeon soared on the breeze, gliding carelessly, this way & that.

As the group made their way up Stapenhill Road, purple flowers popped out between the trees & a shrill was heard from the geese on the river, shouting loudly, as if to be heard above the noise of the passing traffic.

Up the incline of Elms Road, the neat, terraced houses stood together, supporting each other. A robin fluttered by as if to guide the way, up further through Tower Woods. It was surprising to see how much the foliage had grown since last week & members chatted about a shared love of gardening & how therapeutic it can be. As the path narrowed further, a lady walking two westies kindly stepped aside to let them pass.

Having reached the water tower & feeling proud to have achieved an elevation gain of 369 feet, the group headed down the jitty between the houses in Brizlincote Valley. The smell of onions wafted by, the sign of a fry-up for someone, maybe?

Down the valley further, the group made their way across a small wooden bridge, keeping their feet dry from the little stream below. The path led to a hidden gate where, above the fields of crops, the splendid 1712 red brick, Brizlincote Hall, came into view, standing at the top of the hill, looking down on the green valley below.

As the path along the fields ended, the group headed down some steps into a secluded section of pretty woodland. Unfortunately, the area had been flooded by water & as they had neither a boat nor swimwear, they had to about turn & use a different route. The revised route took them through to Grafton Road & Tutbury Drive to reach the bench for the rest stop. Having been very lucky with the weather in previous weeks, this week, the clouds that had started to blanket the sky began to offer a light rain shower, just as the group stopped for their break! Undeterred by the wet weather & with more unfamiliar territory this week, members chatted about the location & tried to get their bearings.

Suitably refreshed (by drinks & rain) & rejuvenated, the group headed through gentle winding paths, hidden from the roadside, so out of sight that that nobody would know they were there. Some members chatted about an enjoyment of history & old buildings, fascinated by what their initial use was & who & what they had seen over the years.

Out of the hidden paths & reaching Woods Lane, the group were back out into more familiar surroundings. The smell of chips was in the air, floating through the open windows of the chip shop, getting ready to open for the day & making us all hungry!

With thoughts of lunch on their mind, it was a steady walk through Stapenhill Gardens where the big trees had been pollarded. It was a drastic change to the usual majestic trees seen there in previous weeks & the group expressed concern for any potential birds that may have been nesting there. Walking on, down the paths towards the Ferry Bridge, photographs were taken of the pretty flowers, the colours of different species intermingling to make an impressive display & getting closer to our destination, tall fluffy bulrushes swayed in the gentle breeze alongside a field covered with wild buttercups, creating a sea of yellow.

Back at the wetlands behind the library, having completed an impressive 4.4 mile walk, a map of the River Trent was spotted, embossed along the top of a bench. It was interesting to see various locations listed along it, including some that the group had walked by. Save

With the bells of St Modwen’s church ringing, signalling the end of another lovely walk, goodbyes were said & the group dispersed, onward to visiting family in Derby & Birmingham, to relax after a busy week with takeaway food & watching Eurovision!

Another weekend & another beautiful day for the fifth week of our weekend walks.

This week’s walk started by following the meandering paths, winding alongside the River Trent, across the Ferry Bridge & over to Stapenhill Gardens. Then on to Stapenhill Hollows for light refreshments before walking along a path where the trees above appeared to form a tunnel to walk through. The group then ventured into new territory, up the slightly challenging incline of Elms Road & through Tower Woods to reach the Winshill Water Tower, a route forming part of the Brizlincote Nature Walk.

The topic for the week was ‘from above’ with the group sighting things including birds & butterflies & a squirrel running up a tree. It climbed with agility over the branches above, where the dappled sunlight gleamed through the canopy of the trees. There was the majestic water tower & many other things too! The water tower was built over a hundred years ago in 1907, but still looks in amazing condition, standing like a giant on Burton’s highest point at the end of Tower Road, the Staffordshire brown brindle brickwork concealing it’s 80 foot cast iron water tank, a focal point across the town.

After admiring the construction of the water tower, the group stopped on the walk back towards the town at the gate to a field where cows grazed gently. Looking back across the town, they were shocked to see how far away local landmarks appeared & correspondingly, how far that meant they had walked!

Down the shaded track offering some reprieve from the hot sun, being careful to navigate the exposed roots of the trees & the loose pebbles underfoot, the group commented on how they had managed to walk down the hill much quicker than they had walked up!

Whilst trundling back down Elms Road & noticing the different species of trees, one member commented that the walking group had taught them to ‘look around, at buildings & nature, not just what’s in front of you’ & that they had never before really noticed or appreciated all the different colours of the leaves on the trees until they had joined the group.

Having safely made it back to more level ground, it was back along the River Trent & over the 36 arches of the Trent bridge, which had seemed tiny from our earlier viewpoint above the town. As three geese flew overhead, one member chatted about their enjoyment of getting out to explore different places. Matlock was on their list to visit soon & we chatted about all the things to do there.

After returning to the library, marking the end of another pleasant walk with perfect weather & good company, it was a busy weekend for some, with several members of the group leaving Burton for the afternoon, off to explore Chesterfield, to Nottingham to watch a family member in a musical & to Bluebell Farm Park in Derby to see animals & enjoy ice cream. Another member was pleased to experience that the walk had felt easier to complete, even though the distance we had walked had been similar to previous weeks, with the repetition of the weekly walks having possibly helped. Next week, the group hopes to visit the Winshill Water Tower again before completing another section of the Brizlincote Nature Walk.

‘Great mental health care is ‘Human.’

At Burton & District Mind, we’ve decided to explore this in a number of different ways that we’ll highlight throughout this blog post.

When it comes to mental health support, it can often be easy to only associate it with mental health terms such as depression, anxiety or even the support available, such as therapy.

We are all just human, whether you are the person needing help or the person helping others.

It is human to need help.

For example,

1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem of some kind each year in England.

About 1 in 5 children and young people aged 8 to 25 in England have a probable mental health problem.

Through highlighting this, we hope it may help those who are struggling but worry about reaching out due to some of the negative stigmas surrounding mental health feel more comfortable in reaching out.

At Burton & District Mind, we are proud of the humans behind each of our different teams who every week are there to provide vital support, facilitate groups, and provide a listening ear when its needed most.

It’s also the humans who are there supporting us to be able to continue offering our vital support, through donating, fundraising or volunteering with us.

If you need support for your mental health, please remember

We are here for you & here for everyone.

We can help you; we just need you to reach out.

The weather was once again very kind to the group for the fourth weekend walk, with sunshine, bright blue skies & a light, refreshing breeze.

This week, the group ventured into more unfamiliar areas, along the riverbank towards the Leicester Line railway bridge. They set off at a relaxed pace, concentrating on their senses, what they could see, hear & smell etc. The first thing they noticed was the colourful flowers around a bench outside the library, all pinks, purples & whites, delicately swaying in the gentle breeze. Behind the flowers was a pretty bench with two white doves built into the pattern of the backrest. It looked like a peaceful place to sit & relax, but as the walk had only just begun, the group left it vacant, free for other people to enjoy. Walking on & noticing the freshly cut grass around the paths, lots of tiny, shiny metallic green dock beetles were spotted. They shimmered radiantly in the sunlight as they gorged upon the dock leaves.

The next sense to be noted was that of sound, with a wash of music floating on the breeze, booming from the rider of a takeaway food bicycle. Someone was about to receive some delicious food, but the bicycle passed by so quickly that the group couldn’t smell the tasty treats.

As the group walked under St. Peter’s bridge & towards the countryside, the noise of the hustle & bustle from the traffic began to fade away into the background & a salty seaside smell wafted in the warm air. A gaggle of four Greylag geese were spotted foraging on the grass. The group stopped briefly to watch them, observing how animals appeared to live solely in the present, concentrating on the task in hand.

One member kindly shared how they had been surprised earlier in the week to have been offered a role which would enable them to help others & give back to the local community. They mentioned that at first they had been uncertain but that having taken more time to think about it, they had decided, ‘what had they got to lose’. Everyone feels unsure sometimes, but what a fantastic way to look at the situation. They were prepared to give something new a try & if it didn’t work out, at least they had tried.

Moving further along the river bank, the magnificent Leicester Line railway bridge came into view, where ducks were seen flying overhead & then landing on the river, some more elegantly than others! The water swished from the oars of the rowing boats & the chatter of the coach relaying instructions over the megaphone from the small powerboat alongside was heard over the gentle hum of the motor.

Whilst walking alongside the railway bridge the group commented on the many different shades of green they could see & how peaceful it was. With a bench in view, it seemed to be the ideal spot to take a refreshment break & discuss what everyone had noticed so far & to enjoy the soft breeze grazing lightly against everyone’s skin. Reorienting themselves to where they were in relation to local landmarks, the group appreciated how lucky they were to have nature on their doorstep, at just a stone’s throw from the busyness of the town.

After the rest stop, the group set off again & soon spotted a yellow dragonfly, darting around & then hovering above the leaves of a bush & settling for a few seconds as if to take a short break of its own, before darting off again. Behind the bushes, cows were seen in the field, some grazing & some snoozing in the warm sun.

Coming to the end of the path, a tractor & scarecrows were seen at the edge of a field & the group learnt about the Watchman’s cottage, which was originally built to watch over the Bass Brewery pump house, where gypsum-rich brewing water from deep wells was highly guarded in years gone by.

On the final section of the walk, some members noticed the waxy touch of the reeds growing beside the path; they were popping up everywhere there was an opportunity to thrive! Next came unusual lemon coloured butterflies as the group approached the large metal statue of St. Modwen, the Patron Saint of Burton, which then prompted a chat about Art & everyone’s likes.

Before returning to the library a majestic tree, full of pinecones, was noticed, stretching up high into the sky, followed by what appeared to be a gate to nowhere at the side of the Andresey Bridge, protecting a plaque on the wall, possibly a special coat of arms. With this, the final discovery of the week, the group were once again surprised by how far they had walked & how many thousands of steps that encompassed. Everyone wished each other well for the long bank holiday weekend & the group dispersed to activities including coffee, a Blues festival & shopping.

Before heading off, the group recapped on the topic from week 2, ‘the benefits of walking for mental health’ with a reminder of some useful benefits including, boosting self-esteem by achieving small goals, reducing loneliness through social connection, reducing stress, anxiety & depression by movement, lowering cortisol, calming the nervous system & boosting mood through the release of endorphins & serotonin. Members also shared additional benefits personal to them, which included clearing the mind & allowing you to appreciate your surroundings & have time to think about the nature & the countryside around you.

The walk this week covered nearly 4 miles, starting out from behind the library, initially with a stroll over to the East side of the River Trent & then across to the West side, towards the Leicester Line Railway Bridge & through the Centenary Woodland. It ventured into areas that some members never knew existed & down paths that some members knew existed but had never previously known where they went to.

The topic for this week’s walk was ‘from the ground’, with the group recording what they noticed to share & discuss at the end. Regular short stops were taken along the way due to the lovely warm weather, to ensure everyone was hydrated with a slightly longer refreshment stop at the benches of the Woodland Hub where fruits & biscuits were consumed to fuel up, to ensure everyone was equipped for the rest of the walk.

Throughout the walk, the group encountered many information boards along the way, learning lots about wildlife local to the area & that footprints of dinosaurs had been found in Ashby Road & near Brizlincote Hall! Boards near to Stapenhill Gardens informed about Stapenhill House, originally the residence of the Spender family, which stood at the site of Stapenhill Gardens until 1933, with views down over the Trent Valley. The white swan of Stapenhill Gardens marking the sight where the tennis courts would once have been. Further along the river was information that the River Trent could freeze over in winter in Victorian times & people would skate & play ice hockey on it! There was even information on Burton’s links to Egypt, with the discovery of Tutankhamen’s tomb apparently partially funded by the sale of the Brizlincote Hall estate!

The weather was so nice, it was lovely to see bees & butterflies dancing between the flowers. We spotted a Holly Blue butterfly & an Orange-tip butterfly. Due to the fantastic weather, the discussion at one point turned to the thought of ice cream, with the group chatting about their favourite flavours & whilst on the walk back to the library everyone talked about their plans for the afternoon, which included bicycle riding, going out for lunch, a BBQ, meeting with family, shopping & meeting with friends for iced coffee.

Once back at the library the group discussed what they had noticed ‘from the ground’ with mentions of the different surfaces that were walked on, grass, concrete, pebbles etc, beach tee nuts crunching under foot, dandelions with bright yellow petals changing to a delicate puff ball of seeds, ready to be spread by the wind & little beetles, shimmering iridescent in the sun’s rays. After appreciating once more how beautiful the weather had been, the group said their goodbyes & everyone went on their way to enjoy the rest of the afternoon.

On Tuesday the 21st of April 2026, I tagged along to the theatre group (now in its 12 week), to see how things were going as they get closer and closer to performing their final piece. Here is how it went…
Having arrived early, it was clear from the get-go, the excitement that the participants had for the project with one expressing their enjoyment of the theatre games used to warm up for the sessions.
The session began at 10am once the facilitators, volunteers, and participants had all arrived, and once everyone was sat down Lalita led the group in calming Mindfulness session. This involves the group closing their eyes, relaxing and listening to Lalita as she describes different calming situations.

After a few minutes of this, and Lalita reached the end of the Mindfulness reading, everyone opened their eyes and were led into song by Margaret from Shoebox Theatre. With many of the participants also joining in with the song enthusiastically.

Then it was time for the theatre warm up games to begin! Starting with a game of Zip Zap boing and then splitting into pairs and jumping into a Mirroring game. This involved one participant performing different actions, whilst their partner would then replicate their actions. This seemed to be a hit amongst the group, with much laughter around the room.

With the end performance getting closer, the group jumped into a discussion around the following…

  •  Blocking out the scenes
  • Different roles people would like to do such as writing or stagehands
  • The costumes required for the performan

Throughout the discussion, everyone was given the opportunity to get involved and have their say with how they thought it should go, and different ideas were bounced off different members of the group. Everyone’s passion for the work they’d put in over the previous 12 weeks was clear to see, and it was wonderful to see everyone giving the chance to express themselves.
Once the discussion was over, they began blocking out the different scenes (which I shall not go into much detail of as to not give away any spoilers). However, I will say there was some great performances, actions, and sound effects throughout.

It will be great to see how this develops further over the coming weeks and they do their final performance.

Thank you to the group for allowing me the chance to come along to see them at work!

Last weekend we had the first session of our new Weekend Walking Group. Here is how it went…

Week 1 – 11/04/26

After a morning of April showers, the group were fortunate for the weather to clear up long enough for them to have a dry walk, which although started out a bit cloudy ended with the sunshine starting to break through.

The group started out from Burton library, enjoying a steady walk around the new boardwalks & through the Garden of Remembrance to the Marketplace, then onwards past the college towards Peels Cut, where a swan was spotted, stranded in the Fleet Street carpark. After agreement between the group, Anthea, Lesley & a participant went to investigate with a plan of herding the swan back towards the washlands, whilst the rest of the group with Zainera & Gemma watched from the benches, taking a quick break for refreshments. Unfortunately, the swan could not stand & looked to be quite distressed. Anthea quickly telephoned Linjoy Wildlife Rescue, who, after reviewing a video of the swan, agreed to send out a volunteer to collect it.

Once the group had finished their break, it was time for the walk to continue, in the safe knowledge that Lesley had offered to stay on ‘Swan Watch’ until the wildlife volunteer arrived. The group said farewell to Lesley & the swan, whom we named ‘Hope’ & made their way along the pedestrian viaduct over the Ferry Bridge & enjoyed the flowers at Stapenhill Gardens before crossing over St Peter’s Bridge to head along the paths by the River Trent. This was until Lesley telephoned with the good news that the volunteer from Linjoy (name checked by Lesley for Hope’s security) had safely collected Hope & was taking her to the sanctuary to be looked after.

The group then about turned, following the same path back towards the pedestrian viaduct to meet back up with Lesley. In a slight alteration to the original planned route the group then walked back towards the library, stopping off for a short break at a picnic bench, shaded by the trees behind the market place where they discussed what else they might have been doing with their Saturday morning had they not come to the walk, with some participants stating they would have just stayed in bed. The group also discussed things they were appreciative of throughout the walk, including ‘giggling more than usual, having walked over 5000 steps, special trees, the new blossom on the trees & biscuits!’. After the short break, the group reconvened the walk back through to the library & chatted briefly about what they had enjoyed about the walk before everyone went about the rest of their day.

It appeared that everyone enjoyed the first weekend walk, even with the unplanned swan rescue mission, which the group agreed it felt the right thing to intervene & help.

Later in the evening, Anthea messaged Linjoy to check on the swan’s welfare, receiving the response that she was ok, she was an ex bird flu swan with neurological issues & that she would hopefully join the sanctuary flock once out of isolation.

I hope everyone enjoyed the walk as much as I did & wish Hope a speedy recovery.
