“Vocations are born in Prayer and of Prayer” – Pope Francis

February 2026 will see the beginning of the Vocations Icon being brought to all parishes in the Archdiocese of Cashel & Emly over the next two years.

The Vocations Icon will visit the following parishes for one week each as follows:

Tipperary Town Parish – Wednesday 25th February 2026

Solohead/Oola Parish –   Wednesday 4th March 2026

Bansha/Kilmoyler Parish – Wednesday 11th March 2026

Anacarty/Donohill Parish – Wednesday 18th March 2026

A Vocations Pamphlet  will be available in parishes with the Icon. Parishioners are encouraged to take one and pray for vocations.

Introduction
Catholic Schools Week 2026 celebrates the extraordinary call to holiness in the midst of ordinary life. Inspired by Pope Francis’s reflection on Blessed Carlo Acutis—soon to be canonised as the first millennial saint—this year’s theme invites pupils, teachers, families, and parishes to explore the call to holiness as something both universal and accessible. Key Theme: Everyday Holiness
This theme offers a meaningful opportunity to speak to children and young people about how God calls each of us to holiness in the concrete circumstances of daily life. It allows us to:

Introduce students to modern saints like Blessed Carlo Acutis, who lived an ordinary teenage life with extraordinary faith.
Highlight saints who lived in families, went to school, worked in trades, or suffered illness.
Explore the meaning of holiness as a loving relationship with Jesus Christ, lived through prayer, service, courage, love, and joy.
Emphasize the role of the Eucharist, the Scriptures, and Christian friendship in forming a holy life.

“The saints show us that holiness is not about escape from the world, but deep engagement with it in the Spirit of Christ.”

In the very early Church, the first believers were known as followers of ‘the Way’ (e.g. Acts 9:2). In answer to the question ‘how can we know the way?’ (John 14:5) Jesus declared that ‘I am the Way, the Truth and Life.’

This platform is intended to help people to know the Way – to discover the faith, live the faith and pass on the faith. It is for both seekers and followers. Together, we are led by Christ to be pilgrims of hope.

In Our Hands is a campaign and a call to come together to help to preserve the iconic Cathedral of the Assumption, Thurles

A Legacy Worth Preserving

The Cathedral of the Assumption, Thurles, is more than a building. It is a sacred space woven into the fabric of our lives – a place where many of us have celebrated life’s most meaningful moments. Years of weather, wear, and time have left the Cathedral in urgent need of care. The roof must be fully replaced. Structural cracks have formed. Leaks and dampness are threatening the fabric of the building.

What Can We Do

The In Our Hands campaign is a community call to action to the people of Thurles, its hinterlands, the Archdiocese of Cashel and Emly, and the wider diaspora to come together in a shared act of community pride and to make a donation to help us to preserve the Cathedral. Together, we can preserve this sacred space, protect its rich history, and ensure it continues to inspire for generations to come.

RIGHTING A WRONG – AN APPEAL TO WOMEN AND THEIR LOVED ONES

I am trying to contact those women and their loved ones who have suffered great historical injustices in institutions in Northern Ireland. My appeal is to them right across the world.

This year we, the politicians in Northern Ireland, have the opportunity to right a great wrong of the twentieth century, imposed upon young women in mother and baby institutions, Magdalene laundries and workhouses between 1922 – 1995.

We have launched an international appeal to victims and survivors of these institutions, asking for their views on legislation to establish a public inquiry and financial redress scheme. Both are aimed at addressing the terrible wrongs done to them during one of the most distressing and hurtful episodes in our history.

The Inquiry (Mother and Baby Institutions, Magdalene Laundries and Workhouses) and Redress Scheme Bill was introduced to the Northern Ireland Assembly in June 2025. Our scrutiny of it has begun and as part of our work, we are asking those who will be directly affected by the legislation to respond to an online consultation. We want as many as possible to have their say before it closes at the end of September.

A message from Archbishop Kieran O’Reilly on the death of Pope Francis.

It was with great sadness that the people of the Archdiocese of Cashel and Emly and I, learned of the death of Pope Francis, RIP.

His recent medical struggles and Easter Triduum appearances in St Peter’s in Rome had brought hope to all that he was on a journey of recovery from his recent illness. However, having fought the good fight to the end he returned to the home of the Father – the loving God in whom he trusted – early on Easter Monday morning, the meeting day at Galilee.

His ministry as Pope was characterised by his commitment to the poor and marginalised, to leading global awareness about the common home that we all share on this planet. One of Pope Francis’ abiding legacies will be his call to all to share our beautiful world for the benefit of all. Especially, his calls for special attention of care for those whose lives are endangered because of climate change. A call that becomes ever more valid with every serious weather event.

From the earliest days of his ministry he challenged all believers to become Missionary Disciples of the Risen Lord – all our pastoral and church life he called to be lived out of missionary conviction. This challenge is never more relevant as we journey together on our synodal journey, as a Universal church and a National church.

A book of condolences will be available to sign in the Cathedral of the Assumption, Thurles, over the coming days.

May Pope Francis rest in peace and may he be welcomed into the Father’ eternal home. Solas na bhlaitheas da anam usual.
