Native plants provide shelter and important food sources to insects, which in turn are important food sources for wildlife, such as the Baltimore oriole, the mascot of Baltimore’s major league baseball team.
The Oriole Garden, located at the notable Camden Yards stadium in Baltimore, was created in 2016 through a partnership between National Wildlife Federation, Maryland Stadium Authority, the Baltimore Orioles, and the National Aquarium. The design for this garden was created by Claudia West, and consists of plants native to the Mid-Atlantic region that provide valuable habitat and showcase alternative sustainable landscape practices.
Now, six years later, the garden has fully grown and is a visually dynamic space of diverse textures and colors that catch people’s eyes. There is a wide array of wildlife who benefit from this space, alongside people who use the space to connect with nature in an urban setting. From the light pink, uniquely shaped petals of the Eastern beebalm (Monarda bradburiana), to the white turtle head (Chelone glabra) which is the host plant of the Baltimore checkerspot, and even common milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) host plant of the monarch butterfly has popped up separate from the original design.

The use of native plants, such as the ones in the Oriole Garden, offer numerous environmental benefits and requires less long-term maintenance. Their extensive root systems can absorb great amounts of rainfall, help manage stormwater, and reduce flooding risks.
These plants are adapted to their local environment and therefore are resilient to environmental challenges and do not require synthetic fertilizers or pesticides. Eliminating the use of these chemicals results in healthier watersheds, which is important because the Oriole Garden is in close proximity to Baltimore’s Inner Harbor which leads directly to the Chesapeake Bay.

Baltimore Orioles fans passing by the garden on their way to a baseball game can also learn about the importance of native plants through signage and gain inspiration for their very own native plant garden.
According to the Maryland Stadium Authority, over one million fans have attended home games at Camden Yards so far this season, meaning the impact of the Oriole Garden is far greater than just the space itself.
It has been a long journey turning a stagnant area of grass into a dynamic native plant garden that supports valuable wildlife like pollinators.
From design, installation, and ongoing maintenance, the Oriole Garden is a fantastic demonstration of what gardening for wildlife looks like in an urban environment.

Ruby-throated hummingbirds begin migrating through in mid-March and will stay with us until mid-October. The best way to attract them to our yards is to provide native plants with tubular-shaped flowers. These include trumpet vine, coral honeysuckle, cardinal flower, and bee balm.

Any nectar-producing flowers can attract insects which will attract hummingbirds. Nectar feeders can provide good nutrition for the hummingbirds and can get them up where we can see them better. We also recommend water misters to provide water and a bath for the hummingbirds.

Baltimore orioles tend to migrate through our area and not hang around. Some people put out nectar feeders, orange halves, and grape jelly to try and attract Baltimore orioles to their yards. To get a glance as they pass through our area, a look at the tops of tulip poplar trees can reward people here with a view of Baltimore orioles and orchard orioles and warblers and tanagers. I think they are attracted to the nectar and to the insects in the yellow and white flowers.

Hummingbirds need a source of nectar from their arrival in May through their departure in August. Native plants are the best offering as they produce more nectar than other plants and they also attract the insects that hummingbirds will eat, with insects being the other major part of their diet.
Suggested native flowers for continual nectar in our area:
Planting in masses with each of these flowers is most likely to get the attention of a hummingbird flying over your yard. All of these plants have been field-tested by me in my personal gardens and they “behave well”, not spreading or looking too messy for someone used to non-native flowers.
When orioles first return to the area for breeding, they are looking for blossoms that will yield them nectar and as a side benefit, the insects that would be at those flowers. Amelanchier (serviceberry species) would be the favored choice as it blooms earliest.

Keep in mind that orioles are also searching for insects as a protein source. The best sources for caterpillars include Quercus (oak species), Prunus (cherry species), Betula (birch species) and Salix (willow species). These four species alone are host plant for more caterpillars than any other combination.
Our year-round Anna’s and Allen’s hummingbirds love native tubular flowers like penstemons, salvias and fuchsias. Snapdragons, monkey flowers, and western columbines are favored as well. Agaves and yuccas attract hummingbirds and hooded and Bullock’s orioles to their flowering stems, so they’re great to have in the mix.

Plant native milkweed for butterflies and watch orioles incorporate the stems into their pendulous nests, which typically hang from native California fan palms (Washingtonia filifera).
A tip for choosing native shrubs is to remember the three Rs. Plants in the Rhamnus, Rhus and Ribes genera attract hummingbirds and bees with their flowers and—BONUS—draw in visiting hooded and Bullock’s orioles with their berries. (American robins, western bluebirds, cedar waxwings, California scrub jays and northern mockingbirds all love the berries, too.)
Spider webs are critical to nest construction for hummingbirds; therefore, spraying any pesticides would eliminate that element. Hummingbirds use downy plant material for their nests, such as the parts of Osmunda cinnamomea (Cinnamon fern), Salix discolor (pussy willow) as well as moss and lichens. A container planted with mosses is a good alternative.

Orioles need long fiber strands in order to create their nests. I have witnessed female orioles at the base of milkweed plants that have been left to over-winter, clipping the bottom and pulling back to create a strand of workable material. Hyssop species and native grasses would all work well for this purpose. Orioles nest in large trees that have hanging branches as opposed to horizontal ones. Maples, cottonwoods, and elms are all good choices to provide for nesting trees.

When I’m looking at a hummingbird feeder I’m looking for a feeder that’s practical—easy to use and easy to clean (no one wants to spend hours trying to clean a feeder!). I love the pretty glass ones, but they are hard to keep clean so I’ve learned the hard way to stay away from those. Bottle shape ones might also look nice, but they leak.

I need to be able to easily take the feeder apart for cleaning and reach all of the areas with a scrub brush to make sure that the feeder is kept clean. I stay away from feeders that bees can reach the nectar, if they can’t get to it they will leave the feeders alone. I like to have multiple smaller feeders that I can scatter throughout my yard since hummingbirds have a tendency to not share and since they don’t hold a ton of nectar, it forces me to clean and refill them on a regular basis to ensure that I keep everything safe for my favorite hummingbirds!
Some key features you want to look for in a great hummingbird/oriole feeder would include:

Regular cleaning is essential to maintaining a safe feeding station for hummingbirds. Hot water, white vinegar, a good bottle brush, and a nectar port brush are the best tools of the trade. White Vinegar is especially helpful because it kills bacteria, helps to dissolve & loosen gunk but it’s safe for both you, the birds, and the environment.

Bleach of course works, but if you don’t rinse the feeders completely it can be very harmful to the birds. A few minutes of regular cleaning can prevent mold and bacteria growth and keep our hummingbird feeders clean and safe. I love to have a clean feeder ready to be filled so that I can take the fresh feeder out and swap it with the empty feeder, which keeps the hummers happy and gives me time to clean the empty feeder so that it’s ready to go for the next time!
You really need to be sure to keep your hummingbird/oriole feeders clean for the safety of the birds. Sugar nectar sitting out in the hot sun can cause mold or mildew to build up and the nectar will go bad and be unsafe for the birds. Depending where you live, the warmer the weather, the more often you need to change out and clean the feeder.

Here in Florida, we advise every 2 days or so if it’s hot. Wipe out the feeder and use warm water and Dawn dish detergent OR vinegar to clean the feeder, inside and out. Use small port brushes to clean inside any small holes or tubes. If the feeder is dishwasher safe, go ahead and put it in the top rack.
Wild Birds Unlimited has always encouraged people to discover refuge in their outdoor space. Creating or restoring habitat with native plants—whether on a patio or balcony, in a yard, school, or community plot–can create that refuge for birds, bees, butterflies, and for people!
Everything in our world is knit together. Growing native buckwheat as a host plant for butterflies will also provide nectar for bees and hummingbirds, leaves and seeds for finches, towhees, and quail, and shelter for other creatures all at the same time. A good environment for birds benefits other wildlife species which need support. Even simple actions can have a positive impact on an entire ecosystem.
That’s why the National Wildlife Federation teamed up with the Baltimore Orioles baseball team and the Maryland Stadium Authority to design and install a showplace demonstration garden for orioles, butterflies, and other local pollinators.
Home of the beloved Baltimore Orioles and affectionately known by residents as Birdland, there’s no better place than Oriole Park at Camden Yards to educate and inspire fans. Together, our staff and volunteers have installed more than 12,000 native plants to create this garden #FortheBirds!
The native plant garden will provide orioles, other local birds, butterflies and pollinators the food and shelter they need to survive.
Baltimore orioles can use the stalks and fibers from the milkweed planted to create their unique basket-shaped nests. Asclepias tuberosa, the milkweed known commonly as butterfly weed and pictured on the right, has striking orange flowers through the summer for pollinators.
Native plants are adapted to the local climate and require less maintenance than ornamental or non-native varieties. In addition to providing important wildlife habitat, native plant gardens can also help reduce polluted runoff from entering local waters and the Chesapeake Bay.
The Oriole Garden at Camden Yards will welcome back both sets of birds each spring. The garden coincides with the orioles’ migratory pattern, putting it in their direct path home. The conservation of migratory songbirds like the Baltimore oriole requires international cooperation, but there is a lot individuals can do to help from their own backyards.

Now the millions of fans who attend Orioles games annually will have an opportunity to see the garden and – through educational signs – learn how they can replicate wildlife friendly gardens at home and in their community. Take a trip to the stadium and visit this summer!

As you can see, dogs like Humphrey and Max can get a little wild every now and then. All dogs who are descended from gray wolves are actually the same same species, Canis lupus. So it’s no surprise that they share similar behaviors. Both dogs and wolves prefer having large areas to run, are carnivores, and communicate through body language, various vocalizations, and scent marking.
Through domestication over millennia humans have bred out the wildest behaviors in dogs. An interesting study by the University of Massachusetts found that wolves and dogs differ in large part because of how they develop. One major difference is socialization: wolves begin socializing at two weeks old — while they are actively developing their senses — whereas dogs start socialization at four weeks old — after they have developed their senses. This difference in development could be one of the main reasons wolves behave more wildly.
There are two wolf species native to the United States, the gray wolf and red wolf. Unfortunately red wolves are endangered and can only be found in a small part of North Carolina. Help save red wolves from extinction!
Domestic and wild cats enjoy pouncing, prowling, and marking their territory through scent or visual markings. All cats, like Figaro pictured above, have strong senses of smell as well as retractable claws (except for cheetahs, which have semi-retractable claws that grip the ground as an aid for sprinting at speeds of up to 60 mph). A good sense of smell and claws are what help make cats fierce predators. Did you know that just like domestic cats, mountain lions (also known as cougars or panthers) do not roar, but rather use vocal communications such as purring, hissing and growling? So do most of the other wild cat species found in North America: lynx, bobcats, jaguarundis and ocelots. (The jaguar, a species once found in the Desert Southwest and still occasionally sighted there, does indeed roar like other big cats.)
Unfortunately, wild cats do not have the same strength in numbers as domestic cats. The Florida panther, for example, is an endangered species with a population of less than 160. A range of threats from habitat destruction, disease, and mortality from cars have significantly plagued this big cat’s population.

In the United States, about 20.6 million birds are owned as pets. The most commonly recommended birds to have as pets are parakeets, also known as budgies. Although domestic parakeets originate from wild ancestors in Australia, parakeets distant relatives are the songbirds that show up in our yards.
Parakeets, as members of the parrot family, share a common ancestor with song birds. Both originate from an ancient landbird, from which both groups of birds get the genes for vocal learning. Recently the complex avian evolutionary tree was mapped out to show how birds are related to one another.
One of the most iconic songbirds in the eastern United States is the Baltimore Oriole, a symbol of Baltimore, MD, one of the National Wildlife Federation’s Top 10 Cities for Wildlife. You can help these songbirds and other wild relatives in your area by building a nesting box in your backyard or creating a garden for wildlife.

Bearded dragons are one of the most popular pet reptiles in the United States. Originally from Australia, bearded dragons have been bred in different colors. Like their wild ancestors, they feed on insects and other invertebrates. Bearded dragons lay eggs, are ectothermic (“cold-blooded”), and are vertebrates.
Turtles are some of the most commonly encountered reptiles here in North America. Pet bearded dragons need desert-like conditions to survive, just like the North American desert tortoise. Most of our native turtle species, however, tend to live in or near water. Species such as the painted turtles, snapping turtles, yellow-bellied sliders, and softshell turtles call marshes, ponds, slow moving rivers, or lakes home. Sea turtles, live in the ocean and coastal areas. There are six species of sea turtle found in North American waters and nesting on our beaches: green, hawksbill, leatherback, loggerhead, olive ridley, Kemp’s ridley sea turtles. (A seventh species, the flatback sea turtle, is found in Australian waters.) Unfortunately, all sea turtles are threatened or endangered due to coastal development of their nesting areas, ocean pollution, climate change and international trade in turtle meat.

Pet fish can be divided into two main groups: freshwater and saltwater. Most fish hobbyists in the United States keep freshwater fish as pets, such as goldfish or guppies, rather than saltwater fish simply because freshwater fish require less maintenance and are more often bred in captivity (many saltwater fish are wild-caught which can be unsustainable).
Some species of wild fish need both fresh and saltwater to complete their lifecycle. For example, Chinook salmon, a keystone species of Portland, Oregon, one of the Top 10 Cities for Wildlife, are diadromous, meaning that they live in saltwater and freshwater at different points in their lives. Chinook salmon are an important food source for wildlife and people in the Pacific Northwest as well as a popular fish to catch for sport. Unfortunately, this salmon and other wild fish are threatened by climate change.
You can help keep habitats safe and healthy for all of the wild relatives in this post by supporting our work across the Federation.
Baltimore is well on its way to becoming a certified community. In the past two years, more than 300 homes have been certified attracting birds, butterflies and other wildlife. The more native plantings are used to attract wildlife, the greater potential there is for reaching the city’s Healthy Harbor goals and helping to clean the Chesapeake Bay.
To help protect our waters nationwide, the National Aquarium is asking people to pledge to protect and conserve water from Earth Day on April 22 through World Oceans Day on June 8. The actions taken can be as simple as giving up using plastic water bottles and bags to turning off the tap when brushing your teeth.

Baltimore was recently named one of the Top 10 Cities for Wildlife as part of the National Wildlife Week 2015 Celebration. Did your city make the grade?
Many songbirds are master builders, putting together intricately made weavings of twig and leaf, stem and fluff, hair and moss. Some nests, like the Baltimore oriole’s, will hang from a tree branch like a small tote bag. Others, like the robin’s, are cups bristling with twigs painstakingly collected one or a few at a time. Even if you provide birdhouses in your garden, the birds that occupy them will build nests in them.

So, what can you do about it? Well, you can provide nesting material of a wide variety of types that appeal to a wide variety of birds, attracting avians to your garden as surely as you would with a feeder.
You have two ways to provide nesting materials: You can grow plants that offer construction goods, or you can offer raw items.

For birds looking for small twigs, almost any tree or shrub you plant will do. When small branches or twigs fall from a shrub and gather at its base, leave them for birds to pick up, preferably in lengths under 4 inches.
Some birds line nests with soft plant matter. You can provide this accoutrement by growing catkin-bearing trees and shrubs such as cottonwood, maple, mulberry, willows, poplar and beech.
Many birds—hummingbirds spring to mind, but other songbirds as well—gravitate toward fluffy material, such as seeds with silky attachments designed to waft them on the wind or seed pods with a soft, hairlike covering. You can provide these items via cottonwood trees, lamb’s ear (ground cover), milkweed (also good for attracting monarch butterflies), honeysuckle, and clematis.
If you have a pesky spot in your garden that refuses to grow anything but dirt, try adding a little water and see if you can grow mud. Mud is a favored nesting material for swallows and swifts and even the common robin.
When you trim your yard, perhaps you can find a spot in your garden for laying out a selection of dried grass stems cut 2 to 4 inches long. Grass is a common ingredient in songbird nests, used by species from native sparrows to robins.
If you have a shady spot in your yard, trying growing moss; with its velvety green growth, moss is a beautiful highlight for any moist garden and is a favored building material of some hummingbird species.

Almost any kind of fur or wool will do. Dog fur is probably handiest for most people, especially when dogs are shedding in spring. Curry them, take the fur off the brush, and put it in your garden (we’ll talk below about ways to distribute it). If you use goat hair or wool from a sheep, cut longer pieces into 4- to 6- inch lengths. Animal fiber works well for nesting, because it is durable and not inclined to soak up water. Just don’t use any fur that has been treated with flea dips or insect repellents.
Please do not try to provide human hair for birds! Human hair is so thin that it can easily wrap around birds legs and necks, cutting off their circulation and causing serious injury or death.
Who doesn’t have a few snakeskins lying around going to waste? You don’t? Well, okay, but you never know when a snake might shed its skin in your yard. If you find one these integumentary artifacts—looking like thin, almost transparent parchment—hang it in a tree or shrub where a bird may find it and apply it to its décor.
You can offer fabric, yarn, twine or string made of natural fibers such as raw cotton, hemp, sisal or wool. These natural fibers won’t retain water in the nest, will eventually deteriorate naturally over time, and are similar to the fibers birds would find in the landscape. Cut them into one-inch-wide strips and in lengths under 6 inches long, and put them where birds will find them, such as on tree and shrub branches. Don’t use synthetic fibers or long lengths, which, like hair, can tangle and injure birds.
The lint collected in your dryer filter may seem like ideal nesting material, but it isn’t. It will soak up water and may be steeped with chemicals unhealthy for birds, such as remnants of detergent and softener.
So you have a collection of wool, dog hair and strips of natural fibers. How do you do deliver it to birds? My favorite method: Cram a mix of the items into a suet feeder, giving songbirds access to a smorgasbord of building basics. Or, fill the head of a kitchen whisk with the various materials and hang the whisk by its handle from a tree or shrub. Do-it-yourselfers might like tocheck out a designfor an easily made wire holder.
Aside from bribing them into your garden with foodstuff, providing nesting material is one of the best ways to attract spring and summer birds. If you offer it, they will build.
