Endless

The Old Testament reading at the early service on Christmas Eve sets forth Isaiah’s vision of a glorious future. It is a world in which there is no gloom. This world is radiant with justice and righteousness.

It seems like that world is a long way off, but today we celebrate a startling fact. God’s own child, Jesus Christ, has been born among us. Jesus is the revelation of perfect love, a sign that God is not separated from us. God loves us, and in that, there is always hope.

Angel

As a child, I often was told by strangers that my freckles were “angel kisses.” It was a strange and not entirely comfortable idea: that angels had marked me. “Fear not” is always the angel’s entering word, because angels tend to bring a not altogether comfortable message about the purpose for which God made us. God’s love has marked us all. The cross written on our faces in baptism is not a sign of comfort. It reminds us that we were loved into being, by God, for a purpose. Our lives are marked with both that purpose and that love.

Mother

In Advent, I think of Mary, who carried the One who carries us all. Through her and the ways of Jesus, we get a glimpse of God’s love that is nurturing, unconditional, and everlasting. Mother can mean many things. It may be the people who gave us life, or the ones who feed, encourage, and guide us; and sometimes those who mother us are not women at all, but anyone who shows that kind of care. To be mothered is to be cared for and strengthened for the journey. Advent invites us to honor those who have mothered us, whether family, friends, or chosen kin, and to share that care with others. Who has carried you in love? How might you mother someone else this season?

Declared

Often when we say things, we hedge our bets. We insinuate or imply something, rather than stating it outright.  We mention or allude to or suggest an idea, for fear of painting ourselves into a corner or being held accountable for our words.  But the identity of Jesus Christ our Lord, the Son of God, is declared.  The incarnation of God in the person of Jesus Christ is God’s great declaration to the world: this is who I am, this is what I am like, this is how much I love you. I wonder what you hear in that emphatic declaration by God. I wonder what you might declare in return.

Deep

In the earliest days of my post-conversion fervor, I was most struck by Jesus’s promise that with faith all things are possible. I walked around, just dazzled, marveling that I could tell a mountain to throw itself into the sea. Yet I never dared to try. I wonder if it was my own faith I doubted or if I were afraid God would let me down. Of course the two are the same. How deep is your faith? Are you scared to ask God to do impossible things? A mustard seed of faith, Jesus tells us, is enough to move mountains and part the sea.

Truly

“Truly I tell you” is Jesus’ catchphrase, whether translated as the King James Bible’s “Verily I say unto you,” or as the kids say today, “For real for real!” Jesus’ catchphrase is also his mantra. He has come to tell us the truth, and to embody that truth: the truth about God, and the truth about love. “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free,” he says in the Gospel of John. In your words and actions today, how will you bear witness to the truth Jesus became incarnate to share?

Robes

In 1994, the song "The Robe" by Wes King played heavily on rotation at the summer camp where I worked.  I can still hear the moody '90s synthesizer ring out, as King sang "The robe is of God… the robe is His (Christ's) grace,".  The robe that King sang about wasn't soft; it wasn't fancy or a status symbol. It wasn't a showpiece.  It was a robe meant to shelter and comfort the aching, the cold, the lonely, the shut-out, and the worn out.  As we draw closer to Christmas, dressing ourselves and our homes in more and more finery, I wonder if there is a place for the robe of grace in our merry-making. I wonder if we, too, can help prepare the way—not for a show—but for the Kingdom of Heaven.

Cleansed

I have only one requirement for a family vacation: we must be near a substantial body of water. Ocean or great lake; I need my feet to fall into hot sand as I feel soft waves lap against my calves. I need to venture out far enough that the waves bob my body up and down, feeling weightless, buoyant, and free. These trips into water cleanse my body but also cleanse my soul. I shut my eyes and tune out the world, feeling the sun on my face and thank God for the beauty of creation.

Highway

When I learned to drive, the highway overwhelmed me. The speed, the confusion of lanes, and the size of those trucks sent me to slower back roads where I felt safe. Highways can be intimidating. Isaiah speaks of a highway in the wilderness, a way made for God’s people to travel without fear. Advent tells me God makes a way even when the road looks uncertain. Christ goes with us, step by step, until fear becomes trust and loneliness becomes belonging. This season, I want the courage to take the road God prepares, even when my heart drops and hands shake. May we find companions and signs that keep us moving toward home.

Recompense

Repay, remunerate, reward, reimburse, requite, return in kind: all of these are synonyms of recompense. Though some of these have a nice ring to them, when partnered with vengeance, recompense seems, indeed, terrible. But then there is the final promise of Isaiah’s words: God will come and save you.  The truth is, I need God to save me from the whole cycle of paying and paying back and paying in kind, of rewarding and remunerating and reimbursing. I need God to set me free from the entire economics of exchange embedded in this world so that I can experience, fully and freely, the gift of God’s grace in the salvation of Jesus Christ. What recompense do you need God to save you from?

Honor

I recently asked a group of thirteen second graders the meaning of “honor”. When we recite the Girl Scout promise and say, “On my honor, I will try…” what does that mean? One of the girls responded, “It means you keep your word.” I love this definition of honor. The words in this week’s collect can become mechanical for me, but not when I think of the Trinity having honor in this way. Even in the most uncertain days of Advent, we can trust that God will keep God's word.

Unquenchable

When we hear the word unquenchable, we might think of our thirst or our desire for something. We don’t often think of the context of this word from our holy scripture, where John the Baptist tells people about the chaff that Jesus will sweep into the unquenchable fire, versus the wheat that God will store in the granary. As we wait for the infant Jesus to be born, it’s good to remember that Jesus is God the son and has all of the power of the Trinity. We believe in, and follow, a powerful God and we should keep the alternative to heaven in mind. 

Inextinguible

Brood

The word brood has several definitions, including "a group having a common nature or origin." Obviously, the nature of this group was viperous - meaning they use tactics such as camouflage and speed to ambush their prey with deadly poison. The implication in this passage is that these Sadducees and Pharisees wanted to be baptized, not as an outward and visible sign of faith and repentance, but as a way to blend in and destroy. This Advent, I wonder - what is the inverse of a brood of vipers? What would be the common nature of a group that stood out and moved slowly, and maybe even awkwardly, in the world to share abundant life?

Encouragement

When the waters rise up, what words rescue you? Maybe it’s a song lyric from forever ago. Or perhaps a phrase an elder spoke, which you find yourself repeating. (“This too shall pass” or “Que sera sera” were my grandmother’s favorites.) The scriptures urge us to use the word of God in this way: to bind it to our forehead and carve it onto the tablet of our heart. “Encouragement” holds the Latin word cor, meaning heart, at its center. We find encouragement, we take heart, from the words that center us. Write God’s words of hope on your heart.

Counsel

The word counsel brings back campfires, late-night conversations, and years of listening as a camp counselor and also as the one who needed it. Counsel is more than advice. At its best, it is patient presence, a steady guide, and a willing companion. Isaiah names the Messiah “Wonderful Counselor,” which tells me something about God’s heart. God does not rush us or hand out quick fixes. God stays with us and heals. I have learned from mentors, friends, children, and entire communities whose lives are rooted in hope. Heed

When I tell my kids to “listen to me!” they often retort “we are listening!” But maybe what I really mean when I say “listen” is actually “heed.” Not just to hear my words, but to pay attention, and put them into action. “Are we there yet?” My husband and I have a game of counting the number of times one of our three kids asks this on any given road trip. Gratify

The word gratify is such an interesting one; even one of my favorite dictionary websites acknowledges this. A gratifying experience is a good thing; but the scripture where we find this word, Paul warns against gratifying the flesh. Gratify can mean satisfy and it can mean indulge. When I think of a gratifying experience, it's one I've worked hard to accomplish and it typically took time to achieve. To put the word in an Advent context, following Jesus is gratifying and will gratify our lives. How can you draw closer to Jesus this day? This week? This season?

Reveling

Quietness

Quietness brings me back to the old hymn “Blessed Quietness, Holy Quietness.” I sang it as a kid without really knowing what I was singing. Now I view quietness as a rare and holy gift. The world can be so busy and loud, yet every so often a soft stillness shows up and makes room for God. In those pauses, peace slips into the noise and the Spirit reminds me that Christ is near. Quietness is not just empty space. It is full of presence, hope, and rest for worn-out hearts and weary spirits. This Advent, I invite you to welcome those sacred pauses and listen again for the voice that meets us in silence, so we can notice the love that has been there all along.

I have a group of friends who see each other once a month for the last thirty years. The name of the group is FFMC, the First Friday of the Month Club. The unofficial name of the group is The Tribe, and that meaning is deeply scriptural and cultural. Whether referring to the twelve tribes of Israel, indigenous tribes around the world, or musical groups, what connects us as people is up to us and up to God. What makes a tribe a tribe is belonging.
