In reply to Mary Beth Tinker. Today was like a dream come true! Now our next step is to educate advisers and administrators about what the new law means. It is a wonderful bill that spells out specifically the standards students will follow just as the Tinker bill all those years ago. It also provides protection for advisers and administrators who follow it as well. New Voices will be heard in the state of Washington!

We in Washington state have a new law giving student journalists at public high schools and colleges press freedom. We have had two cases of school shootings. In the latest one in 2017, one boy was killed and two other students injured. Sadly, it did not receive much coverage because of that. We have had some stores refusing to sell assault rifles and many schools participated in the walk outs. Students can make a difference and their voice is being heard. Also, I am sure that these students will soon be voters and will support their views about gun violence at the polls. If only the ACLU had as much money as the NFA!

The School Board needs to be made aware of the unique learning opportunities school media run by the students offers. It is the only class that stresses research by interview not just internet. The students must evaluate the information gathered and make sure it is balanced. An adviser offers advice about how to get this balance, but the students learn lots by making hard decisions. They work as a team to produce a product of interest to their audience within a deadline and a budget. These are skills any school board should applaud, not suppress.

When my school district in St. Louis County, Missouri, decided during World War II to start a district-wide newspaper to be delivered to every home in our large, sprawling area, the design of that publication was based on Evanston Township HIgh’s Evanstonian. That is how far back
excellence in journalism goes at the school. When I began advising a high school newspaper in 1964 I looked to he Evanstonian as a model of excellence, thoughtfulness and wisdom. As a young journalist, before I taught, I did a major feature on former Concentration Camp victims establishing new lives in the United States. They always told me that Americans need to always be on guard; that what happen before in Europe could happen again in the United SIates. I have never forgotten that warning.
