Developer Pelikan 13’s sequel to The Takeover is coming up this fall, and has a first-look PC demo that’s out now for Steam Next Fest.

Takeover, take two

Released in 2019, The Takeover was an arcade-styled brawler that went a tad under the radar. In the age of the resurgent brawler, it might be easy to see why. After all, unlike some, it didn’t feature a big name license. Nevertheless, the game was apparantly a big enough hit that developer Pelikan 13 has prepped a sequel, one that’s inbound for the PC this fall.

Takeover 2 is that game, and it looks to up the ante considerably in terms of visuals. That’s not the only alteration though, as Pelikan 13 says that fans can look for loads more weapons to be included, and a redesigned combat system. That will be meant to offer up “tighter player control and game-changing tactical options”, according to the company.

Also according to the press release, weapons will come in handy when managing crowds of foes. That’s understandable enough, but you also have to consider the menagerie of foes that Takeover 2 will be throwing on screen. Those including an army of thugs of course, and uh… velociraptors.

Takeover 2 pushes arcade-style combat to the next level with mechanics designed to reward mastery and creativity. Players can expect to battle through waves of enemies while mastering: Combo chainsParry mechanicsSpecial attacksFinishing movesCrowd control strategies and Perfect combo runs.

Whether players are looking to casually smash through enemies or perfect every encounter with flawless execution, Takeover 2 offers a combat system built for depth, replayability, and pure adrenaline.

Pelikan 13 press release

Taking over this fall, demo launching now

How crazy does that trailer look? While the traditional side-scrolling beat ’em up action seems sharp by itself, players will also be piloting a jet in what Pelikan 13 calls a “bonus game”. That’d be Jet Fury, a game (mode?) that’ll feature a “survival experience”, and what sounds like classic arcade “score-chasing gameplay”. It’s also not the only alternate play experience that’ll be included.

Onboard too is Super Street Racer. And that’s exactly what it sounds like, sending players to the asphalt. The press release describes it as a “retro-inspired racing challenge where speed is everything — because if you’re not finishing first, you’re finishing last.”

The two bonus games above come in addition to Takeover 2‘s trio of core game modes. Those would be Arcade, Challenge, and Practice modes. Arcade is pretty self-explanitory, sending players though the game’s campaign, while Challenge mode is all about combat trials. As for Practice mode, that’ll have fans sharpening their skills.

As mentioned above too, Takeover 2 does have a demo out right now. Fans who have access to Steam on the PC can grab a copy, which is timed to coincide with the platform’s “Next Fest” event. If you’re unfamiliar, that celebrates future game releases.

Speaking of releases, those waiting for the full game’s launch, will have to hang on for this fall. That’s when Takeover 2 will be heading to the PC, for launch on September 10th, 2026. It looks like that launch might be exclsuively for Steam, but stay tuned.

We’ll have any further news about this promising brawler for you in the months to come.

A bundle of classic Marvel Comics video games sounds like one heck of a good time. And that’s just what Marvel Maximum Collection is.

Make Mine Marvel… Maximum Collection

How well do you remember the heyday of Marvel Comics video games? Actually, I’ll issue a bit of a clarifier there I guess, in that I mean the 80s/90s arcades and 8/16bit eras. While there’ve certainly been more than a few Marvel-themed titles since that time, it inarguably produced some of the best-loved games to feature the superhero universe.

We’re talking about games that still get talked about today too. Even with the glut of Marvel video game content, the likes of X-Men: The Arcade Game and the SNES/Genesis’ Spider-Man games still get plenty of love from fans. That said though, some (Most? All?) of those games are hard to come by today.

While some have seen digital issuance, they’re pretty much all gone now. And as for those console offerings, they never made the move past their original platforms. So if you’ve been itching to replay some of those gems of yesteryear, but haven’t had access, you might want to take a look at Limited Run Games’ Marvel MaXimum Collection.

Collecting the universe

If you’ve any experience with collections, then you know what to expect out of this one. Basically, Limited Run Games has bound together a whole bunch of Konami’s classic Marvel Comics titles, in (more or less) their original forms. These aren’t remakes or remasters, though that’s not to say that there aren’t some enhancements.

More on that in a second though, as we’ve got some games to name. And when you’re talking about Marvel MaXimum Collection, there are more than a handful. Included in the set are a pair of arcade classics with X-Men: The Arcade Game and Captain America and the Avengers. The latter game also includes its 8bit and 16bit versions, which are fairly different.

Say what you want about the Prof, but he’s not subtle

Maybe I should say that the 8bit version is different. I was shocked that the 16bit edition of the shield-slinger was as solid a port as it was. Still, it’s cool to get the option to relive any of the above, even though two of them are fairly similar. As mentioned though, the collection goes much farther.

Also on board are Spider-Man/Venom: Maximum Carnage and Venom/Spider-Man: Separation Anxiety. As with the arcade titles, the pair of the above include both 16bit versions too. Then there’s Spider-Man/X-Men: Arcade’s Revenge, which goes one step further and packs in the classic portable versions as well.

And finally, there’s the 8bit Silver Surfer game. I have zero nostalgia for that one, as its blazing difficulty used to make me… not happy. That’s me though, and if you dig it, then you’ll probably be happy to see it again. Plus, as mentioned, there are those enhancements. Those definitely ease up on the toughness.

An authentic experience

When you’re talking about porting games that are meant to be played on CRT monitors to modern sets, the results can be mixed. Most games that see re-release though, tend to make some cosmetic options available to at least attempt to convey a more authentic look.

That’s true here too, as Marvel MaXimum Collection allows for a number of filters to drop over your game. So if you just can’t stand the look of classic games on a modern TV, you can tailor that a bit. It does have a solid effect too, as the CRT filter is something that I’ve used exclusively. On top of that, there are also some neat borders included.

Spider-Man takes on his arch-nemesis… Billy

Remember that these games were all originally 4:3. Modern televisions, on the other hand, tend to have a lot more real estate. So with that in mind, the games all play with a “native” aspect ratio as the standard. That’s a slightly shrunken play area, presented with a border all the way around. You don’t have to actually use that though.

Players can also opt to stretch the image out into 16:9, or use a true 4:3 ratio. For the record, I use the latter, with a matching border. That’s right, the Marvel MaXimum Collection packs in multiple frames, so you can mix and match for the game you’re playing. It’s a cool feature that’s really appreciated.

Along with all of this, the games themselves play exactly as I remember them. I still got completely annihilated by X-Men: The Arcade Game‘s bosses, and was able to bounce soda cans off of mandroids in Captain America and the Avengers, all exactly as it was way back when.

Extras aplenty

So there are the borders and the filter, all of which makes for a more authentic play experience. But Marvel MaXimum Collection packs in more than just visual enhancements. Yes, that includes most of what these kinds of collections offer in the present age.

For one thing, there’s the rewind feature. I know, I know, you don’t need that. Nevertheless, it’s kind of nice to have, especially if one or more of these games used to give you fits. Obviously, I’m talking about Silver Surfer, at least in my case. Still, the point stands for those who have traditionally found some of these games to be unbeatable.

With the rewind feature, they’re anything but. I get that that kind of negates the challenge, though it should also be pointed out that you don’t need to utilize that function at all. So the difficulty level is really up to the player there.

There’s a great Avengers border to use with this game, but that’s not it.

Also packed-in is the Archives mode. That’s kind of self-explanatory, but includes a host of vintage visuals. Those include classic magazine ads, but much more. It’s pretty well done overall, and fun to leaf through if you’re a fan who remembers seeing these advertisements when they were first run. That’s not all though, as it also includes original box art, official art, manuals, and even design documents.

Not all of the games are included in all of those categories however, particularly in that last one. The “design documents” section actually only includes a look behind the scenes at Maximum Carnage. It’s a real kick though, as many of the depicted documents are actually just looseleaf pages with notes. It’s so cool to see that presented here, and see what the developers were thinking. There’s even a Marvel Comics fax cover sheet!

Add a music player to the above, and you have a decent amount of stuff for any Marvel fan to check out. Other than the games, I mean.

Overall

At its core, Marvel MaXimum Collection is a celebration of Marvel Comics’ 90s video game legacy. If you’re a fan of the likes of Spider-Man/Venom: Separation Anxiety, or remember heading to the pizza parlor to play the X-Men arcade game after school, it’s probably fair to say that you’d get quite bit of enjoyment out of this package deal. Adding in the bonus sections only builds on that, with plenty to check out after you’ve played your favorites.

Personally, I had a great time with this set of Konami classics, and I’m hoping that there’s a sequel on the horizon. Maybe one from a certain other publisher, whose Marvel titles are long forgotten?

A bundling of classic superhero video games is coming up fast. The Marvel MaXimum Collection lands for consoles and PC this month.

MaXimum MARVEL

To put it mildly, Marvel Comics has a long history with video games. There’ve been interactive experiences starring the likes of the X-Men and Spider-Man for decades, stretching way back to the NES and arcades of the format’s golden era.

Not all of those games are that easy to find though, especially today. A few in with that lot are some of the most popular Marvel games of all time too, making the situation all that much more puzzling. Hang on though, because Limited Run Games, Marvel Games, and Konami Digital Entertainment are about to see to that deficit.

Just revealed a short time ago, the Marvel MaXimum Collection will include a bevy of classics, most of which are indeed pretty tough to find. Highlights include the arcade versions of both X-Men and Captain America and the Avengers, along with multiple versions of 90s-era Spidey gems, and even the Silver Surfer NES game.

Coming to digital and physical formats

This being Limited Run Games, you bet that MARVEL MaXimum Collection will be getting both digital and physical releases. As usual with LRG though, those boxed copies will be, uh, limited in release. It also looks as though they’ll be exclusive to the company’s online shop, which should also come as no shock.

The collection of classics will officially launch in digital format on March 27th, for the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, and PC (via Steam). That mentioned physical version will post on the same date, though only for pre-order. It will be available for all platforms except the PC (natch’). Fans can look for the advance sales period to run through May 24th, 2026, though when the boxed edition might actually ship, we’re not sure.

What we do know though, is that the boxed versions of the game will come packing some extras. Limited Run Games does do that on occasion, and it looks like MARVEL MaXimum Collection will indeed be stocked with bonuses.

In with each physical “Standard Edition” copy for the Switch, PS5, and Xbox will be:

  • Foil Cover Sheet
  • Manual
  • Sprites Sticker Sheet

It’s almost time for Dotemu and Tribute Games’ latest. And before Marvel Cosmic Invasion drops, you can take a deep dive into its gameplay.

A 90s Cosmic Invasion

Yes, the 90s Marvel U is back, and that’s thanks to the upcoming Marvel Cosmic Invasion. The newest beat ’em up from Dotemu and developer Tribute Games, Marvel Cosmic Invasion is scheduled to hit consoles and the PC next month. But before it hits, we’ve got a deep dive into its gameplay (and more) of you to check out.

In the nearly eight minute video, the team at Tribute walks prospective players through the ins and outs of what they’ll find in the title’s campaign. This includes creating your team of two, and balancing powers out or even recreating classic team-ups from the classic comics.

There’s also a decent deal of talk about how the authenticity of the 90s Marvel Universe was taken into account. That era is something that Tribute Games wanted to focus on, and for the most part, it definitely looks like the studios has nailed it. The only thing we take exception to, is the presence of Cosmic Ghost Rider (and maybe Rocket Raccoon), since the future version of the spirit of vengeance didn’t even exist back then.

Nevertheless, the game is looking terrific otherwise. If you’ve been eagerly awaiting its arrival, we definitely recommend hitting play below.

In MARVEL Cosmic Invasion, the immortal supervillain Annihilus launches an unprecedented attack across the galaxy, threatening all life as we know it. Fighters both Earth-born and cosmic must join forces in a star-spanning adventure against the deadly Annihilation Wave. You’ll choose from a lineup of uniquely powerful characters, brawling through the streets of New York City all the way to the depths of the Negative Zone to foil Annihilus’ vow to spread death across the cosmos.

Dotemu press release

Ready to rock and roll through the Marvel Universe? Marvel Cosmic Invasion hits  PC, the Switch 1 & 2, the PS5, and Xbox Series X|S on December 1st. What better way to kick off the Holiday Season?

Bandai-Namco’s iconic, ghost-gobbling hero is rolling in 2025. Now PAC-MAN has another highlight, with a pop-up arcade in NYC.

Pop-up power pellets

Have you been following along with the year that PAC-MAN is having? The classic arcade hero is PACking in the happenings, with a new game, a guest-starring role in Sonic Racing: Crossworlds, and an appearance in the 99th edition of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade. But if you thought that was all that was in store for the little yellow guy, think again.

Bandai-Namco has just revealed that there’s a slick-sounding, and free to attend, arcade that’s set to pop-up as well. That’ll be happening right in the heart of New York City’s Herald Square, inside of the location’s legendary Macy’s store (151 W 34th st).

The installation will feature “a lineup of PAC-MAN and Bandai Namco arcade games available to play for free”, according to the company. Look for the titles on hand to include “World’s Largest PAC-MAN, PAC-MAN™ Battle Royale Chompionship, and PAC-MAN™’s Pixel Bash, which includes more than 30 classic titles such as Dig Dug™, Galaga™ and the original PAC-MAN“.

That’s not all though, as there’ll also be a Gashapon machine present. Included in said machine will be some cool-sounding stuff, that includes miniatures featuring PAC-MAN and more. Gashapon tokens will be purchasable on site, which’ll get you a try, though we don’t have word on pricing.

PAC-MAN, stil chompin’

Looking to visit Macy’s and get in on the above fun? If so, you’ll find the PAC-MAN pop-up in place starting this month. The event will be found on the store’s 7th floor, and start up on November 14th (2025), running from 10am-10pm (Mondays through Thursdays). You’ll have a while to check it out too, as things don’t come to a close until January 18th, 2026.

The 14th sounds like it might be an extra-neat time too, with a planned celebration taking place from 2pm-7pm. Bandai-Namco says that fans will be find a “Meet & Greet with PAC-MAN, themed giveaways, and a free gift with purchase while supplies last”.

“PAC-MAN has spent 45 years bringing people together through the universal joy of play,” said Susan Tran, Sr. Director of Brand Development for PAC-MAN at Bandai Namco Entertainment America Inc. “Bringing this arcade-inspired experience to Macy’s Herald Square gives fans a new way to connect with PAC-MAN and Bandai Namco’s legacy while creating fresh memories with friends, families, and fellow gamers. We’re thrilled to share this colorful, nostalgic space with New York City during one of its most festive seasons.”

“Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade has always been the stage where the world’s most beloved characters come to life, and this year we’re thrilled to welcome PAC-MAN to our iconic holiday tradition,” said Jordan Dabby, producer of Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. “From soaring high above the streets of New York City to taking over Macy’s Herald Square, in New York City, PAC-MAN’s 45th Anniversary celebration continues with a one-of-a-kind Pop-Up Arcade. This immersive experience invites fans to keep the fun going with free-to-play games, Gashapon prize vending machines, and anniversary merchandise—bringing the excitement of the Parade right into the store.”

A new He-Man game?! Can it be? You bet it is, and the retro brawler is set to arrive for consoles and the PC in 2026.

By the power of Grayskull…

Okay, so we’re having a hard time believing that we’re not dreaming here, but it’s true that a new He-Man game is indeed coming up. While the iconic 80s property has had a massive renaissance in the last few decades, video games seemed somehow out of reach. That’s to say, until yesterday.

The upcoming game was revealed at Gamescom yesterday, with He-Man and the Masters of the Universe: Dragon Pearl of Destruction, which is inbound for 2026. The title will be a retro arcade brawler in form, arriving from Mattel and Limited Run Games, and developed by Bitmap Bureau. You might know that last name from several places, including the upcoming adaptation of one of the 90s’ greatest action films, in Terminator 2D: NO FATE.

Getting back to Eternia though, fans can expect a total of twelve levels of action in He-Man and the Masters of the Universe: Dragon Pearl of Destruction, with multiple heroes to play as. Of course, He-Man is one of those, though the defender of Grayskull won’t be alone. The barbaric superhero will be joined by Teela, Man-at-Arms, and… well actually there’s at least one more hero who’s yet to be revealed.

So stay tuned for that, but in the meantime, you can get your first look at the game in action below.

You have the power

Inspired by the iconic ‘80s cartoon, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe: Dragon Pearl of Destruction allows players to take control of Eternia’s beloved heroes, including He-Man, Teela, Man-At-Arms, and more, to battle Skeletor and Evil-Lyn and save Eternia from plunging into darkness.

Fight through over 12 action-packed levels using character-specific moves, abilities, and power-ups to stop Skeletor’s ancient ritual that threatens to take over Eternia. Battle Cat, He-Man’s fearless feline companion, also joins the fray, battling on the side of justice with his claws unsheathed.

Dragon Pearl of Destruction is one of the exciting ways we’re bringing Mattel’s brands to life through digital games,” said Erika Winterholler, Head of Business Development, Digital Games at Mattel. “It’s a love letter to those who grew up with He-Man, combining nostalgic visuals with fast-paced, modern gameplay. Our goal is to honor the franchise’s legacy while introducing it to a new generation of players. The team at Limited Run Games shares that passion, and we hope the game connects with both lifelong fans and newcomers alike.”

Dragon Pearl of Destruction is the Masters of the Universe arcade game I yearned for as a child,” said Josh Fairhurst, CEO and Executive Producer at Limited Run Games. “I am excited and honored to be playing a small part in making it a reality.”

Limited Run Games press release

There’s no release date just yet for He-Man and the Masters of the Universe: Dragon Pearl of Destruction, but we’ll let you know as soon as one’s revealed.

Arcade beat ’em up fans looking forward to Marvel Cosmic Invasion will want to check out the panel on tap for Comic Con.

Paging all superheroes

One of the best looking beat ’em ups in recent years, which is saying a lot, might be Marvel Cosmic Invasion. The arcade-like battler will be hitting consoles and the PC later this year from Dotemu and Tribute Games, the very same companies behind the super-popular TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge.

Marvel Comics fans should find a ton to like in it, given that it’s styled after the 90s version of the comic book universe, and features a 15 character deep roster of Marvel’s biggest heroes. Wolverine, Captain America, Spider-Man and more will all be playable in what’ll be a tag-team quest (up to 4 players) against the evil Annihilus, AIM, and even the robotic Sentinels.

In MARVEL Cosmic Invasion, the immortal Super Villain Annihilus has launched an unprecedented attack across the galaxy, threatening all life as we know it. Super Heroes both Earth-born and cosmic must now join forces in a star-spanning adventure against the deadly Annihilation Wave. Brawl through the streets of New York City all the way to the depths of the Negative Zone to foil Annihilus’ vow to spread death across the cosmos in classically inspired side-scrolling combat.

Taking it to the Con

While Marvel Cosmic Invasion won’t arrive for consoles and the PC until some time later this year, fans heading to Comic Con will be able to get an inside track on some fresh info. That will come by way of a panel presentation, dubbed MARVEL Cosmic Invasion Deep Dive – A Nostalgia Driven Approach to your Favorite Characters.

Members of both Tribute Games and Marvel Games will be present for the panel, and will dig into both the game’s action, as well as its storyline.

The full particulars are below.

The MARVEL Cosmic Invasion Deep Dive – A Nostalgia Driven Approach to your Favorite Characters panel will take place on Thursday, July 24, from 4:45 – 5:45 PM Pacific Time in Room 6BCF at the San Diego Convention Center. The panel features members of Tribute Games and Marvel Games and will explore how MARVEL Cosmic Invasion’s action and storyline faithfully recreate one of the most beloved universes in pop culture.

MARVEL Cosmic Invasion Deep Dive – A Nostalgia Driven Approach to your Favorite Charactersfeatures:

  • Special Host Tim Gettys from Kinda Funny
  • Tribute Games
  • Jean-François Major (co-founder & technical director)

The team behind Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge is heading to the Marvel Universe this fall.

More classic action

If you played Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge, then you already know that Dotemu and Tribute Games have already turned in one of the very best side-scrolling actioners to see a console (or PC) in years. And if you loved that action-packed romp as much as we did, stay tuned true believer, because there’s more where that came from.

Revealed today at Nintendo’s Switch-centric Direct, Marvel Cosmic Invasion will seek to serve up similar action, but will swap out Turtles for Marvel superheroes. But hang on, because this isn’t the current Marvel U that the teams at Tribute will be playing off of. No, it’s just a little more special than that, as Cosmic Invasion is centered on the publisher’s past.

Classic Marvel fans take note, because Dotemu is calling the game a “visual homage to colorful ’90s era MARVEL comic books”.

In MARVEL Cosmic Invasion the immortal Super Villain Annihilus has launched an unprecedented attack across the galaxy, threatening all life as we know it. Fighters both Earth-born and cosmic must now join forces in a star-spanning adventure against the deadly Annihilation Wave. Brawl through the streets of New York City all the way to the depths of the Negative Zone to foil Annihilus’ vow to spread death across the cosmos.

Choose and control your own team of two characters while tagging between them mid-fight with the innovative Cosmic Swap system, capitalizing on distinct superpowers and special attacks to create unique team-ups and dish out devastating damage. Unlock stellar powerups and rewards while experimenting with different duos and bash through a fantastic collection of locales and nemeses from the MARVEL universe. MARVEL Cosmic Invasion’s action includes a range of accessibility features, empowering the whole family to be Super Heroes (or villains), and supports four-player drop-in/drop-out local and online co-op with crossplay.

Dotemu press release

While you can see a selection of heroes (and that villain) in action above, they’re not all the characters that players will find in the final game. Dotemu says that Captain America, Wolverine, Spider-Man, Storm, Phyla-Vell, Venom, and Nova are just “the first set of playable characters from the roster”. So stay tuned Marvellites, because this title might shape up to offer an all-star team of playable characters.

Marvel Cosmic Invasion is launching this year, and though we don’t have a firm date just yet, it’s scheduled to arrive for the Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC some time this fall.

Starring the iconic purple and black-clad hero, brand new side-scroller The Phantom has a demo up now for Steam’s Next Fest.

The Ghost Who Walks

Hailed as the first costumed superhero in comics, The Phantom hasn’t been seen in quite a while. Unless you count the terrific action figures made a few years ago by NECA, we actually can’t remember when the last piece of media was produced that featured the hero. Was it the 90s Fox Kids ‘toon, Phantom 2040? Might’ve been.

Be that as it may (or may not) though, the pulp star has indeed returned, this time in a brand new side-scrolling action game. From Art of Play Interactive and King Features, The Phantom stars both Kit Walker (The Phantom) and Diana Palmer, in a beat ’em up adventure that’s spread out across 14 levels of either solo or co-op play.

While the title’s actual gameplay is modeled after old school goodness, the game sports a unique look, thanks to its hand-drawn visuals that are meant to honor the hero’s original medium. That art style includes both the cut-scenes and actual sprites, and has former Marvel and DC Comics talent behind it.

Check it out in action below.

The Phantom is an arcade-style beat-em-up coming to PC and consoles. Play as The Phantom or his partner, Diana Palmer, in this 14-level adventure. The feared pirates of the Singh Brotherhood are battling for power and threatening The Phantom’s legacy, and it’s up to you to stop them. Use your hand-to-hand fighting skills and trusty weapons to dispatch this evil, and call in assistance from your animal friends Fraka the falcon and Devil the wolf. The Phantom features a brand-new story approved by King Features. Experience this canon addition through full-screen cut scenes and captivating in-game visuals, hand illustrated and animated frame-by-frame by seasoned comic book artists and Art Of Play’s dedicated in-house 2D creative team.

Art of Play press release

The full retail release for The Phantom is still a little ways off (pre-orders are open now), with the game scheduled to hit consoles and the PC on March 12th. As mentioned though, you can get a sneak peek right now via PC gaming platform Steam.

A part of the company’s Next Fest event, which is rolling right now through March 3rd, the demo for The Phantom is posted and ready for action as you read this.

The fight is back on for PC players, as Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O is coming to the platform (via Steam) some time this winter.

It’s the ultimate showdown

No really, it is the “ultimate showdown”, as in Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown. Sega revealed today that Virtual Fighter, one of the publisher’s formerly biggest and well-known brands, will be returning to the PC in what’s a bumped up version of Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown.

Of course, as long time genre fans know, Virtual Fighter has a history that stretches back to the arcade release in 1993. That was quickly followed in ’94 by a Saturn launch for the game, as well as a 32X port that arrived in ’95. From that point, VF went on to spawn multiple sequels, and garner a fair shake of acclaim from both fans and critics.

Virtual Fighter 5 capped things off to a degree for the series, with its launch in 2006, though it did see multiple revisions thereafter. The last of those to hit home consoles was… Virtual Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown in 2021, though that’s about to be supplanted.

The newest in the line comes in the form of Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O, optimizing the core experience with 60fps and 4K support. That’s just the tip of the iceberg though, as the new entry also includes rollback netcode, and some new balancing.

Based on Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown™, Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O gives players an optimized gaming experience in their quest to become the world’s best fighter. Offering support of up to 60fps/4K resolution, Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O will contain the game’s first balance adjustments in 13 years and will also support rollback netcode, allowing players to enjoy smoother, more heated online battles with other challengers around the world.

Sega press release

Obviously that’s just the opening cinematic there, and not representative of gameplay. Still fans already have a good idea of what the action looks like, and the improvement in visual quality should make it even prettier. Sega says to expect more on Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O down the line, as we head towards the game’s release date.

Unfortunately there nothing firm to report just yet on that, though Sega also says that it should land on the PC some time this winter. It won’t be alone either, as there’s also a “Ver. 2.0” update on the way for Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown on the PS4. No word on what that might entail.
