]]>In the final part of our series that shares the stories and journeys of our co-owners, Demetra Lykidis, Monika Deviat, and Robin Buriak, we have the reason and person behind the existence of our current studio. Aradia Fitness Calgary; the physical space, the community, the instructor team, everything, would not exist if not for Demetra. Her pole journey was not love at first sight, but a slow burn that all of a sudden turns hot…like your skin as the pole burn hits. All of Demetra’s experiences led her to the unexpected point of opening and growing a successful pole studio and community. We hope you find inspiration in these stories, whether you relate to some parts of them or feel encouraged to stick to your own path regardless of how it compares to others.
It’s still a bit shocking to me how taking a class at Aradia Fitness in 2006 changed the trajectory of my life in so many ways. I was a soccer playing, rough and tumble kind of girl and embracing my feminine side was a challenge but when I found out about pole dancing, I thought maybe it would help me get in touch with another part of me.
I went to my first class and I did not like it, not even a little. But what to do, I had bought a six-week session so I forced myself to finish the classes and then thought I would never go back. I felt so awkward, so clumsy, the opposite of graceful but by the 5th week, I had started to look forward to it. I loved the fact that although I was a gym goer and played multiple sports, this felt different. I could see the progress more than any other activity I did. I would be taught a skill, work on it and perfect it – like a checkmark in my head every time I accomplished each skill. Spins, inverts, climbing – check, check and check! I also started to feel more and more confident and comfortable in my own skin, an unexpected benefit.
After taking classes for about a year, I was asked to become an instructor and I declined because of my work schedule. I was asked again a year later and my answer was still no but in 2009 I finally took the plunge. The training program was intense but I slowly gained experience, starting with teaching beginner classes and was certified to teach all levels within the next 2 years. Surprisingly (mostly to me) I actually loved teaching and still do. It always changes my mood even when I’ve had a tough day. Seeing students progress and achieve their goals is so exciting for me and many times I am more excited than they are . What I realized later on in my teaching career is because I personally struggled many times to achieve a skill as a student, I was able to recognize and diagnose why a student was having difficulties and help them adjust appropriately. My brain is very analytical (which is probably why I went with a math degree) and I like solving problems so teaching to me is about unravelling obstacles and achieving a goal.
I decided in 2013 to challenge myself and so I competed and finished in 2nd place. I always thought I would compete again but by the following year, I decided to purchase the Calgary franchise of Aradia Fitness from Krystal Wall which owned Calgary and Canada at the time. Studio ownership began and my focus was redirected into building the community even more.
By early 2015, the new space was ready and I re-opened Aradia with my partner at the time. I brought over a few instructors from the previous studio (Amanda being one of them) and Monika and Robin began teaching at the studio later that year. By 2017 my partner decided that her life was taking a different direction so I approached Monika and Robin to see if they might be interested in taking over her stake in the business and the rest is history! We became fast friends and partners, all having the same goal – to share our passion and community with others.
Note to self: Don’t take 8 workshops in one weekend!
During the following years, I put a lot of time into training to continue to better myself as an instructor while also having some fun. I travelled to pole conventions, in person training sessions and completed both levels of elevatED~ pole certification. I was very fortunate to train and learn from Michelle Stanek and Marlo Fisken – they are movement experts and gaining more knowledge on working through plateaus, physics of momentum and force, cueing in different forms and functional spotting was invaluable to making me the instructor and dancer I am today.
I started exploring exotic, specifically Russian (which is how we categorize this style) in 2016. I saw Polina Ginger on Instagram and I was mesmerized by her fluidity. She moved unlike anyone I had ever seen and so I started taking her online courses. Submitting videos, receiving feedback, sometimes not so positive haha – she was very strict but I loved that about her teaching style. I attribute her with changing my focus to this day.
So today, as many of you know, my passion is dancing more so than sport. At the beginning of my journey, I felt very uncomfortable with the “dancing” part. Back when I started, it wasn’t something we shared with people at work. I kept quiet for fear of repercussions with my job but another unintended benefit of pole dancing was becoming more open-minded and embracing the origins. It’s important to give credit to the exotic dancers that came before us and acknowledge that Aradia would not exist without them.
My path has included so many amazing people and my team has been one of the biggest blessings. There are certain qualities I look for to surround myself with and one of the main things is caring. Caring about students and their experience in class. Caring about our studio and team members. Our instructors are exceptional, talented, loyal and beyond that, good humans. We wouldn’t be where we are without them.
Last year, I took another step and purchased Aradia Fitness Canada with the owner of Edmonton, Chantelle Beasley. Aradia is the largest pole dancing franchise in the world and our goal is to expand our company to even more Canadian markets and support franchises to become successful businesses and share the passion we have with others. I’ve always known Aradia Fitness was special – I took note early on of the organization, certification and training requirements, curriculum with safe progressions, manuals and class structure. It creates an environment where students can easily learn and grow as dancers and athletes. There a reason why this company has been around for 20 years – it is tried, true and tested.
My story is unexpected even to me – I never planned to continue pole dancing after my first class. I never aspired to be an instructor. I never sought out to be an owner of a pole and aerial studio and yet all of this turned out exactly how it was supposed to.
Aradia is more than just a business to me. It is a community of people that support and embrace each other, cheering for the next success and being vulnerable. It’s not always pretty and never linear but we are all part of each other’s journeys and that’s what makes it special. I appreciate everyone that was and is part of mine and you have all, in some way, impacted my life for the better.

]]>We’re on the second part of our series where we share the stories and journeys of our co-owners, Demetra Lykidis, Monika Deviat, and Robin Buriak. In part two, you may already see a common thread: Pole (and aerial) is life-changing. If you stick with it, the physical and mental health benefits continue, and you’ll see that there is no end to what you can learn, play with, and keep developing and refining. The path may even change as you find a new style or a new apparatus. Robin’s journey is a love story.
Why pole? Because everything.
The journey to pole dancing probably started when I lived in BC. My fitness program consisted of sneaking away from my two children for short periods of time to walk the steep hills of Lions Bay with my best friend, Char. These were breaks for us that built us into cardio powerhouses. We were known in that small mountain town because every day, we would walk from 800ft to the ocean and back several times, all the while yapping about all the shit. It was heavenly, and sure great for our health and wellbeing.
Well, then I went and fell in love. My 3N0 (his Plenty of Fish handle, haha) turned out to be a native of Calgary so off we went. Me and my two little jerks were off to live in Okotoks (never heard of the place). All was super great…except it was flat. I had no steep hills to grind up, and there was no Char to talk with and share the suffering. So, one day when it was -30C outside, I was sweating, swearing, and watching the clock while running on a stupid boring treadmill in a stupid indoor gym, I thought, ”That’s it. I’m taking a damn pole dancing class.”
I had partaken in a pole party at another beautiful friend’s house back in 2007. I never forgot it. 10 women, 1 pole. Still, it stuck with me. Fireman spins, body waves, and a few made-up moves that I might even still use today. I did a quick look around Calgary for a pole studio, and there she was: the lovely Aradia Fitness Calgary, run by the equally lovely Demetra Lykidis. I never even knew until later that my very first class at Aradia was, in fact, the very first class ever upon opening. HOW FUN!!! And how cool is it to have been one of the very first clients and still part of this studio’s journey?
I never looked back. I have not set foot in a stupid gym since. I was hooked from my first spin right through the feelings. I was about to turn 45 when I started in Pole 1 in 2015, and on the day of writing this, I am about to turn 54. I became a regular, attending classes two or three times a week. I just couldn’t get enough and purchased my home pole at about three months in. Almost a year after my first class, Demetra asked me to try out for an instructor position in 2016. Not even a year after that she asked me to be a partner, along with the delightful Monika Deviat. I was all in.
Since that time, I have participated in one CPFA Canadian Championship, Masters Division, one PSO Canada West competition, Masters Division, and one showcase in Edmonton with Aradia YEG. Exciting stuff. My routines were definitely trick-centred, with strength and muscle being my focus. The dancing at Aradia has been great for me, to loosen up my body and mind where I tended to be a little stiff. If I ever compete or perform again, I will definitely try to incorporate more dance flow.
My wonderful partner 3N0 (his name is actually Ian xoxo), is a firefighter and Safety Codes officer. He has been so supportive of my pole life and I also support his fundraisers and volunteer events. I will put on the small-sized firefighter gear and run stairs with him in my Aradia swag to fundraise for various fire-related causes. The firefighting gear is no big deal for a pole dancer to haul up and down stairs! Ian assists us in our annual safety checks of our aerial rig. We are very serious about it here (the photoshoot was Ian’s idea).
During the day, I am a swim instructor, lifeguard, and aquafit instructor, so leading group fitness classes is my life now. My aquatic students vary so much in age. I enjoy introducing fresh babies to the water all the way through the ages to showing seniors the life-changing effects of water and music.
I am still all in. I love this studio, our classes, our instructors, my partners, our students, all of it. Being an instructor and owner could have changed my feelings for pole (it is work after all), but they haven’t. I LOVE teaching my classes, and I still LOVE being a student of our vastly talented instructors. There is so much to learn and try even after all the years I have been training and teaching, I can’t imagine a life without it.

]]>Our studio is run by instructors who love pole and aerial and wanted to share a life changing way of moving, playing, and training. Demetra Lykidis, Monika Deviat, and Robin Buriak have been Aradia Fitness Calgary co-owners since 2017. The trio came together because of the studio, which Demetra opened in 2015. All of their pole and aerial journeys have been different – from reasons for starting, continuing, goals, styles, and more. They share a passion for their respective apparatuses, teaching, students’ success, and a dedication to the community that has come together in the studio. Kicking off the stories of their journeys is Monika Deviat!
Pole dancing changed my life, and not just in a health and fitness way. It’s the reason this introverted physicist who did no activities at all, turned into an aerialist and instructor, started climbing mountains in the dark, and…public speaking. I built strength, got fit, and developed a lot of confidence. Aside from pole and aerial, I constantly found myself being the only woman or one of a handful of women in mainly male-dominated industries. It was embracing my oddities and the benefits of pole dancing that turned me into a visible “force of nature” as my friend and mentor Dave Brosha noted.
I took my first pole dancing class because one of my university physics friends asked me to take a class with them. If something piqued my interest even a little, I would be willing to give it a go. I had no dance background and no real experience in sports and fitness. Well, I did not enjoy my first session. We didn’t do much on the pole, and the class vibe was not for me. After our first multi-week session, neither of us returned to pole until my friend found another studio for us to try out. The second round was better, and we stuck with it a little longer. What motivated me to dive into training was seeing Dominic Lacasse do a human flag – I had to get strong enough to do that, too!
My physics friend was also the driver for me getting into aerial arts. I started with silks and lyra (aerial hoop). The first aerial apparatus I really fell in love with was corde lisse (rope). It was such an interesting apparatus and great for people who like strength skills. When I found a coach who would teach me aerial straps, it hooked me and I dove deep into training. I actually had to convince coach to take me on. I used convincing diagrams and graphs to get my way.
I have always been drawn to the strength side of pole and aerials, and my body type likes to build muscle. Flexibility came slowly to me. Sometimes it was difficult to make myself stretch and put time into that aspect of the training. Eventually, I found ways to train flexibility that I loved and would make progress through.
Pole dancing for fitness was still relatively new when I began my journey. I kept pretty quiet about it outside my friend groups. When I worked in the Oil and Gas industry, I didn’t hide my pole and aerial life (google would tell you everything), but I never brought it up myself. Alberta is a very conservative area, and I heard enough stories of people’s jobs being in jeopardy because of something like pole dancing that I played it safe. This was always something that made me a little bit mad. I would be judged for something that had nothing to do with my work life, but “professional businessmen” could do some questionable things while out with clients, and there would be no judgment.
The industry has changed so much since I started. One important aspect is that the origins of pole dancing are embraced and discussed more openly now, and credit is given to the actual people who inspired and started the pole fitness classes you see now. There is more education available for instructors. Some sports medicine doctors, physios, etc., are researching and spending more time understanding pole and aerial athletes’ movement and needs. Curriculums have been developed in thoughtful ways (ours is kickass if I may say so).
I used to travel quite a bit for work and to photograph concerts. During those trips, I would try to visit a pole studio or circus studio if I could find one near me. Learning from a variety of instructors helped my development so much. In California, I tried flying trapeze for the first time. Fun fact; I was more afraid of climbing the (stupid) ladder to the platform than jumping off the platform. My first Chinese Pole lesson was in San Fransisco. I learned so much about spotting and teaching dynamic tricks and how to develop and maintain foundational movements. While in Montreal photographing a heavy metal festival, I had the opportunity to train at Cirque Éloize with its 40ft ceilings. Imagine trying to climb silks more than twice the height of our studio’s. Everywhere I went, I learned skills for myself, and I would also ask for teaching tips, favourite drills, favourite stretches, etc. Collecting information and constantly learning is essential for an instructor.
I first started teaching at Aradia Fitness Calgary in 2015 and became an owner in 2017. In 2015, I needed somewhere to train pole after taking almost a two-year break due to a car accident. Demetra and I had met years before when she came to do a pole photo shoot with me. We kept in touch over the years and developed a friendship. Demetra had recently opened the studio, and I thought it was beautiful and well put together. Robin became an instructor shortly after I started teaching workshops at the studio. Eventually I transitioned to teaching regularly. Through our love of pole and teaching, the three of us became friends, colleagues, and co-owners of Aradia Fitness Calgary.
What I love the most about Pole Dancing is that you can make it your own. You don’t have to stick to a specific style – there are so many options, and you can mix styles. You can decide to strength train and learn tricks, or take it easy on the tricks and work on choreographies and staying close to the floor, or put on a set of 8-inch heels and go for sexier or more sensual styles. And you can pole dance to any type of music you want! We try to offer as much variety as possible in our studio so everyone has an opportunity to try many different styles or stick to what speaks to them the most.
As a metalhead, I, of course, incorporated this into my repertoire (have you joined me for one of my heavy metal choreography classes yet?). For my first competition, I did a routine to a Sepultura song. I performed at many metal events and even a festival where my favourite band Venom, was headlining. The song choice? “Dead Skin Mask” by Slayer. At some point, I realized competitions weren’t really for me. I did not like feeling even the slightest bit of pressure to conform to song choices, styles, moves, and so on. Performing was fun, though. I did corporate gigs, including one for an Oil and Gas company! I had moved on to being a full-time photographer at that point, but what a change in perspectives and openness.
Currently, my passion is teaching. A combination of COVID and my love for mountains, adventuring, teaching photography workshops, and becoming a Nikon Ambassador made it so that I did not have time or space to train as a performer. I think being able to prioritize and accept your choices and paths is important in anyone’s journey. We can’t do everything, and sometimes when you try your body and mental health pays the price. Teaching brings me so much joy, and I love problem-solving and helping students succeed in their training. Our community, instructors, and students at Aradia Fitness Calgary are amazing. Everyone is so supportive of each other regardless of goals, apparatus, or backgrounds. Pole and aerial will challenge you, take you out of your comfort zone, provide a self-care strategy, and give you space to develop you for yourself. I have always felt like I could be myself in the studio, with my students and my fellow instructors – no matter how “odd” that might be.
Oh, and the public speaking point. I used to do everything possible to avoid having to speak in front of a crowd or give presentations. Now speaking and presenting is an important part of my photography business. While pole dancing never had anything to do with my presentation topics, my version of the Superman Pose was to remind myself I could do a Human Flag/Iron X and no one else in the room could…and that I usually had the biggest shoulders in the room. Speaking to and teaching groups of students was consistent practice, too. I even MC’ed an Aradia Fitness Calgary Showcase once! I think the studio providing the space where I could be myself helped a lot, too.
Thanks for taking the time to read about my journey! I hope it might inspire you to find your own path and figure out what works best for you. You don’t have to be a [insert a comparison of choice here], sometimes it’s about getting out and doing something for yourself that brings you joy.
