Writers Needed! Join Us for Indie Author Day

Last October, 80 authors and readers gathered at the KCLS Service Center in Issaquah for Indie Author Day, a celebration of self-published and small press books. The second annual Indie Author Day is coming up soon, and we're looking for writers to join us!

How can you participate? There are a few different ways to get involved:

Set up a table for book sales and signings. Bring copies of your books to sell, goodies to give away, and anything else you'd like to share with readers and other writers.
Attend workshops and presentations. What topics would you like to learn more about? Let us know how we can best support you.
Present a workshop or join a panel. Are you an expert plotter, a marketing guru, or a master at cover design? Share your knowledge in a workshop or as part of a panel.

VIRL supports the 94 Calls to Action in Canada's Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Final Report. To begin our journey towards Truth and Reconciliation, we are implementing an Elder in Residence program. Our goal is to build a mutually-beneficial relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities.

If you are, or know, an Indigenous Elder who would be interested in filling this role, please contact jsamson@virl.bc.ca or 250.287.3655.

Looking for funding? You're going to need a business plan. Luckily, we have plenty of examples. The Business Plans Handbook provides over 400 actual business plans that you can use as models. The plans are from real businesses in the service, retail and manufacturing industries. Note: This is also available in print.

Use ReferenceUSA to research your competition, market saturation or to view the consumer demographics of a particular location. ReferenceUSA compiles listings for 24 million U.S. business locations and 262 million consumers. These are searchable by name, NAICS and SIC Codes, geography, business size and more. Further, business listings often give a management directory, financial information and business demographics.

If you're more interested in researching potential vendors, strategic partners or competitors by checking what's been written about them in the business press, use ABI / INFORM. This database provides you with full-text articles from over 3,000 local and global business and industry publications, including Crain's Chicago Business, Forbes and The Wall Street Journal.
