All 84 techniques (28 Kihon +56 Urawaza) from the book “Unarmed Fighting Techniques of the Samurai” by Masaaki Hatsumi is demonstrated.

Each technique is showed from different angles. There is no exact way to do any technique in the Bujinkan Dojo, there is wrong ways of doing the technique and there is several ways of doing the techniques correctly. You need to be aware of how the opponent is reacting and adjust accordingly. Bujinkan Dojo Budo Taijutsu and all the Ryuha is far from dogmatic and rigid systems. Hatsumi Sōke taught us these Kamae very often without telling us what it was. He often started the Sunday morning class by taking a sword and teach one of these Kamae without explaining the origins of the technique. I as most others (I think) thought he just did something random without deeper thought behind it. I soon found out that I was wrong, it was these Kamae he was showing us. It was Ninja Happo-biken from Togakure-ryu.

When one speaks of Gokui (essence), people get this sense of something mysterious, something really deep being there. And novelists also describe it this way. Gokui means something which that person can do well, his forte – that becomes the Gokui-gata. Warriors don’t ponder so deeply. “I’m good at this” – that what they go on. Just like in cooking: if it’s good, that’s fine. Like the expression “to cook the opponent” – Gokui is similar to that.

MATS started the DOWN UNDER tour in Port Macquarie. On Saturday the training started with all three forms in Sanshin no kata, then moved on to Muto-dori. This years theme in Japan is Muto-dori and especially Shinken-shiraha-dome. Unarmed defence against knife or sword where you grab the blade.

六尺棒術 ROKUSHAKU BŌ JUTSU

The bōjutsu of Kukishin Ryū is best described as a method used to defeat/trick wielders of other weapons. It has special striking techniques that allow the Bō to feign quickly and re-direct its aim; a special method of “twirling” (Bofurigata) designed to confuse opponents and keep them at bay; and thrusting techniques that correlate with throwing the staff as a projectile (nagebō). Aspects of the Bōjutsu are gleaned from two other weapons within the school: naginata and the spear (from Wikipedia).

There is five levels in Kukishin-ryu Rokushaku Bōjutsu.

杖術 JO-JUTSU

The Jojutsu techniques was developed by Ōkuni Kogenta Yukihisa the 11’th Sōke of Kukishin-ryu in the Genna period (1615-1624). The length of the stick is individual, when placed on the ground it should reach up to your armpit.

We use the same Kamae, strikes and blocks as in Rokushakubōjutsu. The first Jojutsu technique is the same as the last technique in Bōjutsu Keiko Sabaki Kata.

This is the second Taijutsu level in Gyokko-ryu and a very important if you want to learn the Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu system.

The first two techniques is performed without weapons. The next six the attacker is using a Kodachi (small sword) so that Muto-dori is used. The last two is attacks from behind so you need to make use of the Sakki feeling (killing intention).

The picture is not so good but you can see pretty well. But it is annoying in the long run.

Hatsumi Soke taught many many Sword techniques, he showed basics and also more advanced techniques. He taught cutting techniques, Kamae (postures with sword and other weapons), distance, timing and much more.

Sōke also taught Naginata-jutsu which is a long halberd weapon. He also taught the Nichi-geki technique from Shindenfudo-ryu in great detail. He demonstrated Kyusho (pressure points), the basic way of striking in Shindenfudo-ryu, kicking, throwing and much much more.

KENJUTSU

Hatsumi Soke taught a lot of Sword techniques, basics and more advanced techniques. Cutting techniques. The proper Kamae (sword posture). He also taught distance, timing and much more. He also taught a little Naginata-jutsu.

TAIJUTSU

Soke taught the Nichi-geki technique from Shindenfudo-ryu in great detail. he showed the proper Kyusho (pressure points), the basic way of striking in Shindenfudo-ryu, how to kick, how to throw easily and much much more.

MUTO-DORI

He also taught Muto-dori unarmed defense techniques against weapon attacks. He showed defense techniques against various weapons such as Tanto, Ken, Bo and Naginata.

The theme was Taijutsu and weapons.

The main theme this three day Taikai was Juttejutsu and Taijutsu.

Hatsumi Soke said that he never thought we would become so good quickly. Therefore he said he needed to start teaching us more correctly. So he taught very basic Taijutsu techniques such as break falling, rolling, stretching, throwing, counter throws, kicking, striking and much much more.

He also taught how to use the Jutte for defence against unarmed attacks and various weapons such as sword, staffs for example.

TAIJUTSU

Soke taught break falling, rolling, stretching, throws, counters, kicking, striking and much much more.

Soke opened the Taikai and said that now that we have progressed so far he will start teaching us for real. So he started with the very basics of Taijutsu such as break falling and rolling, later going over some stretching exercises. There is not many videos out there where he teach basics like this. He did of course also teach us more advanced stuff as usual, good understand play manner.

JUTTEJUTSU

Hatsumi Soke taught how to use the Jutte for defence against unarmed attacks and various weapons such as sword, staffs for example. Jutte is the baton that the police officials used against the (maybe drunk) Samurai. Killing a Bushi was a bad choice, therefore the policie officials developed weapons that didn’t kill people but could be used against swords effectively.

He also taught Muto-dori, unarmed defence against sword, Naginata (halberd) and many other weapons.

More advanced techniques such as Muto-dori, sword evasion techniques was demonstrated.

He also taught Hanbojutsu, stick fighting techniques with a 90 cm long stick or a cane. Many more weapons was taught such as sword, spear, and sticks. 

The accompanying Shihan also went up to the stage and did demonstrations. Not only the Japanese but also other teachers from Europe. This was 1988, so there was not so many Shidoshi 5’th Dan level at the time.

The instructions is all in ENGLISH with Swedish, Finnish, German and Dutch accents It is 2 hours playing time.

Duncan Stewart has been training in Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu since 1988 and is ranked Judan Kugyo. He has lived in Japan since 2004 and trains consistently with Hatsumi Soke, Nagato Shihan, Noguchi Shihan, Someya Shihan and Someya Shihan. He is often uke and asked to demonstrate at classes. Den 7:e Augusti 2004 gästade Marcus Widengren Kaigôzan Dôjô i Stockholm, och höll ett endags läger i Brasiliansk Ju Jutsu. Han gick igenom grundpositioner, hur man tar sig loss från fasthållningar, hur man låser fast någon på marken, armlås, strypningar m.m. Sista timmen svarade han på deltagarnas frågor om BJJ historia, han förklarade och visade också försvar mot slag/spark, fula knep, benlås.

Vi bjöd in Marcus för att lära oss mer om BJJ som blivit alltmer populär pga deras effektiva markkamp tekniker. Eftersom Marcus också mycket seriöst tränat Bujinkan i 10 år inkluderat ett flertal Japanresor och träning med Hatsumi Sensei på 90 -talet, så var lägret också lite anpassat för oss i Bujinkan. Det var ett väldigt lyckat och lärorikt läger.

Denna video visar många bra och effektiva tekniker där man hamnat på marken. I många situationer hamnar man på marken och det är inte alltid man kan rulla och ställa sig upp igen. Är man familjär med dessa tekniker har man mycket större chans att klara av en situation där man hamnar på marken och måste agera snabbt och instinktivt.

KIHON-HAPPO (TACHI KUMIUCHI)

Kihon Happō is the most fundamental and important unarmed fighting techniques in the Bujinkan system.

On this DVD Duncan show the basic techniques, henka and more advanced. Without weapons and with weapons, also the connection to this years theme Rokkon-shoujou.

Mats Hjelm Shihan from Sweden and Jukka Nummenranta Shihan from Finland also contributed to this training.

Who is Duncan Stewart

Duncan has been training Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu since 1988 and is ranked Judan Kugyo. He has lived in Japan since 2004 and trains consistently with Hatsumi Soke, Nagato Shihan, Noguchi Shihan, Someya Shihan and Someya Shihan. He is often uke and asked to demonstrate at classes.
Duncan was Nagato Shihans sole uke at the Bujinkan Honbu for two years when studying direct from the Gyokko Ryu Densho and the Kukishinden Ryu.

SANSHIN NO KATA

Sanshin no Kata is said to be the roots of the tree in the Bujinkan Dojo’s system of Taijutsu. It is the techniques any beginner should learn first. Even experienced practitioners will keep polishing their Sanshin no Kata. It is that important.

KIHON-HAPPO

Kihon-happo is the trunk and branches of the same tree. First there is the Kosshi-Kihon-Sanpo wich is three techniques where we block, strike and kick. Second there is the Toride-Kihon-Goho which is five grappling techniques. Together they are called Kihon-happo which is said to be the spine of all martial arts.

Who is Tim Bathurst?

Good question! Tim is a senior student of Grandmaster Masaaki Hatsumi, living and training in Tokyo Japan. After a few visits starting in 1990, Tim moved to Japan in 1997 and is one of the few foreigners to have earned the title of Shihan while living in Japan. Presently graded at Judan-ka (10th Dan-Fire level…13th Dan to some.)

Tim has never been in the Military, never served as a police officer, never done personal security, never been to war… Actually, the only thing he has really done is train with the best of the Bujinkan for the last dozen years or so.

If you\’ve been to Japan in the last 5 years or so you would have seen Tim at Hatsumi sensei\’s or Nagato sensei\’s dojos. If you\’re unlucky you will also have to put up with him translating from Japanese into his own Australian version of English… and occasionally into rather poor Spanish.

One of the huge benefits of training for so long in Japan is that Tim has learnt his weapons technique as well as his Taijutsu directly from the Grandmaster and the top Master students of the Art.

Lubos had spent 3 months training and teaching in Japan right before he came for this seminar.

On this video he covers the first six techniques from Togakure-ryu Santo Tonko no Kata. And many different applications with different weapons and multiple opponents.

The first three techniques is situations where you is grabbed by the arm or by the neck. You release yourself, take him to the ground. Then you bind him and flee.

The next three techniques is Muto-dori. Someone attacking you with a sword. You unarm him by striking. Then you blind him and flee.

The training was relaxed and fun. The feeling was just as the trainings in Honbu dojo in Japan. It was a beautiful weekend and the training was outside.

The instructions is in English. The sound is very good as we had a microphone on Lubos.

Lubos Pokorny (Shihan 15th Dan Happo Biken) is a student of Dr. Masaaki Hatsumi, the 34th Grandmaster of Togakure Ryu Ninjutsu. He has traveled around the world to take part in Hatsumi Sensei’s training events. Where he represented the Czech Republic. Beginning his training in 1991, he is the first Czech student of the Bujinkan. Lubos also founded Bujinkan Czech Dojo.

This movie contains all 9 techniques from the Togakure-ryû Santo Tonko no Kata.

Santo Tonko no Kata (or Tonso no Kata) is the strategy of the fleeing rat. There is 9 Tonso kata techniques. Made for quick self defence and escaping away safely.

We can divide all nine techniques into three types of attacks with three techniques each.

• Taijutsu techniques (unarmed against one unarmed opponent)
• Muto-dori techniques (unarmed against one swords man)
• Kakushi-buki techniques (hidden weapons against multiple opponents)

If the Ninja is caught by the enemy he must do everything to report back with the information he gathered. Staying and fighting would be very stupid, risking to lose all information was not a good thing.

The Ninja had different tools and surprises in their skillset to buy them time to flee back to their troops with their very important information. The information might be important for the whole battle.

The focus on this video is the basics of Rokushaku Bôjutsu (long staff), included is basic exercises such as Sanshin no Kata with the Bô vs Bô, Taihenjutsu-ukemi, rolling in all directions and using the long staff. The nine basic Kamae (body postures) is covered in detail. Kihon uchi waza, basic striking and thrusting with the staff is explained. Also all the basic Kihon Kata is taught.

This is a good DVD if you want to learn the basics behind the actual Kata techniques.

Who is Mats Hjelm

Mats Hjelm started training in Bujinkan for the first time around 1983. In 1986 he moved to Stockholm and started training with a real Shidōshi. He met Hatsumi Sōke for the first time in Stockholm 1988. He attended around 20 seminars with Sōke and travelled to Japan 50 times. Mats takes his budo training very seriously, he never really had a longer break from training!

Often when we are training in the Bujinkan we let the training partner roll away. This is good for letting the training partner practice escaping by rolling.

But if you always do that, you never learn how to control Uke.

Hatsumi Soke’s new favourite word in his late 80’s was “CONTROL”. This included taking control of the attacker before he started his attack, which includes place, distance, timing, misdirection, expression, psychology and various ways of trickery. 

This video do not cover this advanced and difficult to explain kind of control. But after you have taken the opponent down to the ground, you still need to control him. This is where the Kansetsu Waza (locking techniques) plays an important roll.

This video covers many locking and control techniques after you have put your attacker down.

The video is 35 minutes and covers all the basic locking techniques from the manual.

Yearly the Bujinkan Sweden (Svenska Bujinkanförbundet) sponsors a seminar somewhere in Sweden. This year Bujinkan Dojo Sundsvall was organising the seminar in the northern part of Sweden.

DAKEN TAIJUTSU

This art (jutsu) consists of locks, entanglements, strangling, striking and kicking, as well as the use of small weapons such as shuriken. The Taijutsu (jūjutsu) techniques of Kukishin-ryū were altered by the seventh head of the school Kiyotaka Kuki , and organized by his son Sumitaka. This was because the techniques of Atekomi (striking) originated at times when armor was worn and became outdated. These techniques were modified to fit in with the early Edo-jidai. In the late Edo era, the twenty-fifth Sōke , Takatomo Kuki, devised the Kihongata that consisted of eight techniques used for teaching the basics of the Ryū-ha arts to beginners- however, this review did little to quell its brutality in learning and teaching. In an effort to make safer to learn and teach, Takatomo altered the techniques so that beginners could practice without suffering injuries. Takatomo served at Nijyo castle in Kyoto, where on February 28, 1864 he visited the Imperial Court and demonstrated his new methods to the emperor (from Wikipedia).

Each level is built up on the previous level. In the first level techniques are simpler and the opponent doesn’t resist so much. In each following level the opponent is also getting better and makes better attacks. From the middle of Ōkuden Kata and the whole Shirabe Moguri Kata the opponent attack’s freely as he like. This demands that the practitioner have studied the previous techniques thoroughly so that he can do each technique good under a stressful situation.

A seminar in Kaigozan Dojo with Shawn Gray from Japan.

This was the 6’th seminar (excl a few Tai Kai and extra trainings) with Mr.Shawn Gray at Kaigozan Dojo in Stockholm Sweden.

The theme this time was Gyokko-ryu Kosshijutsu Happobiken, Bojutsu, Ukemi, Sanshin no kata.

Shawn taught Taihenjutsu ukemi, breakfalling. Sanshin no kata, the five basic movements which can be said to be the roots of Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu, which is also very important basics from Gyokko-ryû.

The Gyokko-ryû techniques Kô, Shunu, Shunsoku, Iaifuji was also taught with a lot of variations, both without weapons and also with weapons, mainly the long staff (Gyokko-ryû Bôjutsu).

About the instructor

Shawn left behind 10 years of Karate and Kendo to begin Bujinkan training in Canada after returning from a 1-year stay in Japan in 1990. After a training visit in 1995, he relocated to Japan permanently in January of 1997. Shawn passed the godan test in January of 1999, and in 2000 at the urging of Hatsumi sensei established a dojo, the first Bujinkan dojo in Japan led by a civilian foreigner. Shawn has regularly served as interpreter for Dr. Hatsumi and has translated much of Senseis writing into english. He has been regularly invited to give seminars in Europe , North America , and Asia.

This years theme was Roppô Kuji + Bûdô no Kiso – (Bujinkan sword basics & advanced).

In August 2004 he came to visit us in Stockholm, Sweden to give a seminar on this year’s Bujinkan theme, Roppô Kuji no Biken.

He taught sword, unarmed defence, and the rokushakubô. Tim explained what would work and what probably would not work in a real situation. The theme of this seminar was very much Shinken-gata, true or real combat methods.

He taught ukemi with sword, basic kamae, basic drawing and cutting, and many sword techniques… Engetsu Sappô, Nito-ryû, Hiryû-ken, Tsuki-komi, Tsuki-iri, Datô no ken, Kochô-gaeshi and many more.

He also taught Mutô-dori, stopping someone to use his sword, how to use the sword if stopped and much more. Also the six foot staff technique Gohô was covered in detail.

The first hours of Sunday morning is not on this video, it is a separate video titled “Kihon Happo Video” wich also includes the x-tra training class he did right before this seminar in Kaigozan Dojo.

Who is Tim Bathurst?

Good question… Tim is a senior student of Grandmaster Masaaki Hatsumi, living and training in Tokyo Japan. After a few visits starting in 1990, Tim moved to Japan in 1997 and is one of the few foreigners to have earned the title of Shihan while living in Japan. Presently graded at Judan-ka (10th Dan-Fire level…13th Dan to some.)

Tim has never been in the Military, never served as a police officer, never done personal security, never been to war… Actually, the only thing he has really done is train with the best of the Bujinkan for the last dozen years or so.

If you\’ve been to Japan in the last 5 years or so you would have seen Tim at Hatsumi sensei\’s or Nagato sensei\’s dojos. If you\’re unlucky you will also have to put up with him translating from Japanese into his own Australian version of English… and occasionally into rather poor Spanish.

One of the huge benefits of training for so long in Japan is that Tim has learnt his weapons technique as well as his Taijutsu directly from the Grandmaster and the top Master students of the Art.

This was a seminar after a three week training trip to Japan (March-April 2004).

A seminar in Kaigozan Dojo with Shawn Gray from Japan.

This was the 5’th seminar with Mr.Shawn Gray at Kaigozan Dojo in Stockholm Sweden, and the third this year.

This time he taught many techniques which he had trained in Japan since his last visit in June.

Koteki Ryouda Juppou Sessho no Jutsu (the 2003 Bujinkan theme).

Ukemi, Taijutsu, and Kunai. The Kunai techniques is actually six Jutte techniques from Kukishin-ryu. Sōke wrote down the Kata for all five techniques except Tatsuge. Labeled it Koteki Ryōda Juppō Sessho and handed it out to all Shihan visiting Japan this year.

About ED MARTIN

Except for being a TWA pilot and B26 pilot who flew a nuclear mission during the Cuban Blockade in Oct 1962. He was also one of the highest ranked Bujinkan instructors. Ed produced a video tape entitled ‘Self Defense for Everyone’. This earned an award of merit from Masaaki Hatsumi and a suggestion by Ninjutsu’s Grandmaster to make a sequel.

Sadly he passed away in July 2017.

He touched so many people, all over the world. For many of you, he was like a father for you too. With his unrelenting will, he accomplished so much. The Bujinkan Theme for 2012 training is “futsu” and there will be a lot of trainings with the sword. When I’m writing this the trainings haven’t started yet, and no one really knows what the trainings will be like. I’ve already seen some good articles explaining some concepts, but I’m not sure if they will help you or plant something different in your mind that will distract you from what Hatsumi Soke will teach us this year.

At Budoshop.se we got many Bujinkan sword DVD’s from the past years that might be good for studying the base sword work that is taught in the Bujinkan. We also have Swedish Tai Kai DVD’s with Hatsumi Soke, he always taught a lot of sword techniques in the past to. Doron Navon from Israel started training with Hatsumi Sensei in 1968 long before the “ninja-boom”. While in Japan he was also introduced to the Feldenkrais method by the Israeli physicist Moshe Feldenkrais who was an accomplished Martial Artist that came to Japan for a shorter visit. When Doron came back home to Israel in 1974 he deepened his knowledge in the Feldenkrais method directly under Dr Moshe Feldenkrais.

Doron says that the Feldenkrais method is a shortcut to the godan test. This has been confirmed by both Hatsumi Sensei and many other who have studied Taijutsu and Feldenkrais.

This video was recorded in 1994 in Stockholm. It was originally released on VHS and then later as a VCD / Video CD in 2003 by BUDOSHOP.SE hence the quality is VCD PAL (352×288), playing time is 52 minutes. It has been remastered and converted so that it plays nice on iPod, iPad, iPhone, PC, Mac, or any other device that can play standard h.264 videos. It is not DVD quality!

All these 56 techniques is shown 2-3 times from different angles and explained shortly. This was filmed outside and it is sometimes difficult to hear what is said, but the way Mats teaches is very easy to understand by body language, so don’t worry about that. The instructions is all in English.

This 82 minute video is from a seminar Holger taught at the Kaigozan Dojo in April/May 2011. On this video he teaches the Bujinkan Dojo Budo Taijutsu fundamentals. A seminar in Kaigozan Dojo with Mats Hjelm, and Arne Elmlund

The theme this year was Hontai Takagiyôshin-ryû and Daishô. Arne was in Japan in october, and Mats was in Japan november/december. In 1971 Kodansha released a book with Hatsumi Sōke and Quentin Chambers, this book have been a good resource for many martial arts instructors and practitioners, not just within the Bujinkan, and this for a good reason. The techniques from the book is a collection of techniques from various ryū-ha, mostly from Kukishin-ryū. The book have step-by-step instructions with over 300 pictures, but if you don’t have previous experience in Bujinkan the movements might be difficult to fully understand. Shortly after returning from 3 weeks training in Japan with Soke and the Shihan, Mats held this seminar. This DVD contains all 48 basic taijutsu techniques from Shoden, Chûden, Sabaki and Okuden no kata. There is 12 basic techniques in each level, together with Shirabe-moguri kata (not covered in this dvd) the school consists of total 60 dakentaijutsu techniques.

In the Shoden and Chuden level we learn how to dodge attacks through a series of throwing attempts, grab

and punch situations, and defences against kicks and punches. The Sabaki level is characterized by a shorter distance and foot work is even more important. In the Okuden kata the opponent starts to resist and do more counters. The opponent is attacking more freely. We try to get him in to a bad position and then apply a technique from the lower levels. In Shirabe-moguri kata (the last level, not covered on this video) the defender is now so skilled that he have developed the ability to feel what the opponent will try to do before he starts doing it.

Kukishin-ryû is a very complete system, if you study the basic techniques well you will have a good defence system against any kind of attacks. On the Keiko #18 dvd, the whole Shoden no kata is covered in much more detail!

If you’re a smart guy and remember to back up before happily click on the upgrade to the newest “stable” version button, or do it when you know you have unlimited hours to spare you can go for it.

Magento is a very good but extremely complicated system. It is not like WordPress which is very simple, and never fails an upgrade.

I fucked up with the upgrade, and wish I postponed it until I have plenty of time to handle the errors. This never fails… there is always something :-).

I have no idea when the store will be up again. If you are in a hurry you can contact me and we fix it without this shitty Magento cart system.

Edit (day after)… I didn’t do anything and now everything works again, so I’m happy now. I guess it was the web server cache or something? Anyway now that it is upgraded I ordered a back up. My web host only allow 30 second php executions which is way too little to back up the huge database from the Magento admin panel. I will clean it up from log files as soon as I have the backup, there is no button from the admin to do this so I have to install a script, or do it manually :-/. Maybe then the back up script from the admin panel will finish within 30 seconds (I hope).

My web host do take backup daily, so if I don’t do it hey do it. Worst case scenario is that I loose data just before the daily backup. But all payments are done on PayPal servers, and I’m sure they do backup the whole time.

Our customers credit card numbers and PayPal accounts is safely stored on PayPal, we never have access to your credit card information. If they screw up it will be on the news all over the world since millions of people use their service.

So there is no cause for you to worry!

Shortly after his second Japan trip this year training with Soke and the Shihan, he held this seminar. This video contains Taijutsu techniques with variations including the Hanbo (short staff). Also Hanbojutsu basics with Taijutsu applications. You can see how similar the Taijutsu techniques can be done with a weapon, and how easy it is to do a weapon technique without a weapon.
