A Community Celebration in Honor of BIFF’s

Opening Night at the Rembrandt Yard

March 4th

Taking a sweeping look out Rembrandt Yard’s two-level, wall-to-wall windows, at the view of Boulder outside, is a veritable buffet of the very best of Downtown; from the ribbon of blue, cloudless sky at eyeline to the meeting at the middle of our beloved shops – The Hotel Boulderado’s ageless, architectural charm and The Bohemian Biergarten’s outdoor lights to your right, the Boulder Theatre’s marquee to your left, and a glimpse of Pearl Street and BIFF’s Box Office straight down the middle – it’s as picturesque a view and as open-air an indoor venue as you can get in an outdoor town. Coincidentally, BIFF’s Opening Night Party featured a buffet, a catered soiree from the very best restaurants – The Auguste Escoffier School of Culinary Arts, Pasta Jay’s, and Savory Cuisines Catering – of Boulder, as well, and this buffett was as much a feast for the stomach as it was a feast for the eyes.

As attendees – filmmakers, producers, and lovers all – milled around, the happy faces, the bountiful plates, with risotto balls, fusilli upon spaghetti upon ravioli, and beautifully baked breads and aperitifs, and the paintings, sculptures, and interior decor of the Rembrandt all merged in cinematic celebration to make one unforgettable, smorgasbord for the senses. And the cherry on top? Yes, the dessert was incredible, if that’s what you were thinking, and it didn’t last long, but the live music, first from a Jazz duo and later, as we all congregated on the street and walked to the Boulder Theater, from the Guerilla Fanfare Brass Band, was a truly special and especially “Boulder” experience for each and every Opening Night partier.

As the band played, and posed as they played for a photo-op for fans, we all walked, danced, skipped, clapped, and sang our way over to the Theater. When “When the Saints Go Marching in,” a BIFF singalong classic in the Opening Night walk catalog, started playing, and we were all standing in a semicircle around the band, gazing up at the lights, down at the glimmering Audis, a wonderful sponsor for the festival, and out at the immense Boulder night sky, we knew it was time, truly time, for the festival to begin.

The band took their bows, we all took our seats, and the night’s feature film, The Duke, took center stage. It was, in joyous and jovial BIFF fashion, a testament to the local talents that make Boulder what it is and make this festival the long-awaited event it always, annually, is as well.

Thank you one and all!

A Conversation with Alec Baldwin and Lisa Kennedy about The State of Things and

The Most Dangerous Man in America: Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers

Mack Costley, Writer //

“The psychic, equity-to-debt conversion of the soul of the country.”

That’s how Special Guest Programmer Alec Baldwin grounded yesterday’s conversation at Boulder’s Grace Commons Church, and the sobering, succinctly-philosophical tone with which he spoke about the film, Judith Ehrlich and Rick Goldsmith’s The Most Dangerous Man in America: Daniel Ellberg and the Pentagon Papers, was truly at home in the likewise sobering space, a vaulted, chasmic and dark-wooded, two-level chappel, where the film was screened only minutes before.

Held in fleeting, cinematic haven within those cathedral walls – as shafts of stained-glass soaked, softly-pasteled light trickled the grey day outside into our interior world, a world thrown back into the social and political tumults of the 1960s, and cast each head in the audience in a hazy halo – were the eyes and minds of a transfixed congregation; as scenes of irreconcilable brutality, violence, and corruption passed along the screen above us, the sense of presence that the stark contradictions in subject and space made plain introduced a rare energy into the room, an energy of real unity within a filmic world of silence and of gunfire and of love and of loss.

The film follows the eye-opening and immensely moving travails of one Daniel Ellsberg, a U.S. military analyst turned anti-Vietnam, radical activist and, eventually, depending on who you ask, public pariah or American hero following the publication of his some 7,000 page, hand-copied, with the help of his three children, section of the infamous Pentagon Papers and the eventual, highly publicized trial that came of their release in the summer of ‘71. The film, which pays evident, careful and considerate thought and cinematic treatment to the legacy of the man himself as well as the legacies of his wife, Patricia Marx, and those both inside and outside, for and against, his mission, paints a picture of political activism that could be no more prescient and pertinent and no more essential and energizing to our conversation as Americans and as political agents than it is today in 2022.

Baldwin didn’t hesitate to use his position as a BIFF programmer, as a speaker, and as a film lover, to discuss just these very sentiments, explaining to the audience that the film “never left him” and that it “teaches you about that time in [….]  history,” a time that, again, presents many parallels to our current world, as well or better than most other films could and can; there existed a tremendous sense of fear at this time in history, said Baldwin, and, in choosing this film for our BIFF audience, Baldwin was also encouraging a conversation about many of those things that we wish would be left unsaid, unthough, pushed to the recesses of our mind out of that self same fear of which he spoke, and un-conversed. There is a soul to the film Baldwin chose, and there was a soul in the room that Friday at 3pm as we all sat in our pews, stunned, saddened, and spellbound, and watched.

As the film drew to a close, the notion of cyclicality, of the unchanging nature of human history, the “How much the same things are” sensibility, was undeniable. But, more undeniable yet was the hope the film imbued in the hearts, minds, and souls of all in attendance.

BIFF’S SINGER SONGWRITER SHOWCASE AT BOULDER’S OWN SPOTTED JAMES BAR

March 3, 2022

Mack Costley, Writer //

If ever there was a spot in Boulder that could take BIFF’s international appeal and appellation and make it manifest for a musical night of unforgettable imbibing, vibing, and taco-buying, courtesy of McDevitt Taco Supply, it would be The Spotted James. Under the hotly-cool, red and blue neons, The James’s horseshoe-shaped cocktail-turned-pub bar played visual counterpoint, and perfect, spirituous accompaniment, to last night’s three hour romp for our annual Singer/Songwriter Showcase.

While the drinks were flowing and the chairs were filling, the likes of Finn O’Sullivan, Dennis Wanebo, Wrenn and Ian, Mark Oblinger, Janis Kelly, The Strangebyrds, and Laurie Dameron – (“Laurie D,” a Boulder fan-favorite), who was kind enough to chat, taco in hand, about her involvement in the festival and the showcase, showing her love for Boulder’s art scene, she spoke of how honored she felt to be playing alongside so many talented musicians, and her love of “fantastic” event organizer, BIFF’s own Lisa Bell – tuned, strummed, chatted, and hummed until 6pm rolled, and rocked, around. And then, with that unmistakable sense of support, of community pride in this Boulder coming-together of traditions old and new, flowing through the amps and filling up the air, all eyes were on that wonderful, brightly-lit, BIFF stage. Show time.

One by one, our local artists laid down tracks that struck a chord, stirred the soul, encouraged environmental activism, and warmed the hearts of one an all with calls for inclusion and unity in our ever-changing world, and with BIFF mainstay Ron Bostwick’s thanks in between acts for BIFF sponsors and supporters, be they restaurants, shops, breweries, or other Boulder hallmarks, it truly was a night to celebrate all that makes BIFF – all that makes Boulder, makes song and dance, food and drink, community and togetherness – what it is: a wild, wonderful, and always-welcome ride.

Tickets are $100 per attendee and are available, along with the Amuse Bouche Preview ticket, $150 to enter 30 minutes early, at biff1.com.

Ticket prices also include a special experience at this year’s BIFF: a screening of Blind Ambition, the story of four Zimbabwean refugees who conquered the culinary world and became South Africa’s premier sommeliers.

So pour yourself a glass of Pizzolato Fields Prosecco, eat an All-Star chef’s award winning dessert, and kick back as evening turns to night and the Boulder stars begin to shine against that famous, mountainous backdrop. Cheers!

FAMOUS FACES AND FAN-FAVORITE FESTIVITIES:

In years past, the Boulder International Film Festival has been delighted to host an array of internationally-respected talents, and this year, we’re very proud to announce, is no different! From first ever special Guest Programmer Alec Baldwin’s movie selections – Dr Strangelove or: How I Stopped Worrying and Learned to Love the Bomb, The Most Dangerous Man in America: Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers, and Julia – and follow-up, can’t miss interviews about his relationship to and musings on each and his March 5th interview with BIFF’s own Ron Bostwick – tickets go on sale with the rest of the general program, so get on over to biff1.com! –  to Javier Bardem’s, Oscar nominated this year for his performance in Being the Ricardos, career-retrospective interview with Scott Fienberg of the one and only Hollywood Reporter, you really can’t miss when it comes to hitting that cinematic ball out of our, extensive, program list park.

When it comes to balls…. Our fan-favorite Opening Night Gala is sure to be one! As the biggest party of the BIFF season, our Gala serves as a platform for local food – this year provided graciously by Pasta Jays, Savory Cuisines Catering, and the Auguste Escoffier School of Culinary Arts, with wines from Bookcliff Vineyards and Winc Natural Merchants and local craft beers from Upslope Brewing Company – great BIFF friends, and great music and a helpful leading hand – from the Guerilla Fanfare Brass Band – as our Pearl promenade takes the party parade from the street to the seat for a screening of Helen Mirren and Jim Broadbent’s The Duke at 7:30 pm that very March 4th evening.

Two days later – but not a dollar short! – BIFF will also play host to countless of Boulder’s best, most-exciting musical artists at “Best of the Fest!” and a Colorado-premier screening of Charlotte Rampling’s gin-soaked, wild ride Juniper. Last and never least, but nearly always long-lasting in our BIFF hearts, is the Closing Award Ceremony, where great film talents will be awarded with our handcrafted, truly dazzling to behold, Vielehers. If you want the best in Boulder, the brightest in Boulder, and the boldest, maybe even the bouldest, in Boulder too, then that’s here, that’s us, and that’s BIFF! We look forward to seeing you on the best red carpet any movie-lover could ask for: Pearl Street!
