Aiming to record artistic facts, events, objects and situations that have defined the history of visual and performing arts in Romania starting from the late 1960s until today, IP has adopted a systematic, though non-linear, approach. The Institute aspires to shift the reading perspective of the artists’ visual and performing vocabulary from within the context that generated it, in order to bring to the foreground the production practices, the transnational relations and the accounts that have been suppressed or have remained invisible.

Launched in Bucharest in 2017, the Institute of the Present brings together visual and performing culture professionals who share the same vision and references and the same interest in research, striving to achieve a structured, imaginative and participatory exchange between the various artistic disciplines and communities.

I was happy to become part of an engaging and passionate process and contribute to the development of the artistic and cultural content through two major programmes, Players of Change, capturing the 1989 moment and the artistic movements before and after in Timișoara and Eastern Europe, and the Power Station, the capacity building engine to help and support the entire programme, as well as through a variety of transversal regional and European partnerships and artists invited to join the projects.

In the frame of ZonaD, we programme workshops and dance classes held by Romanian and foreign choreographers; interdisciplinary residencies; improvisation evenings; dance films screenings; special events in lab-format and experiments at the boundary between different artistic disciplines.

ZonaD is a programme administered by Gabriela Tudor Foundation. The public and private funding bodies of the projects developed in the frame of ZonaD since its start were: the Culture programme of the European Union, the European Cultural Foundation in Amsterdam, the Administration of the National Cultural Fund, Bucharest 555 Cultural Programme of ARCUB – Centre for Cultural Project of the Bucharest Municipality, the National Dance Centre Bucharest, the Ministry of Culture, The Saison Foundation, Tokyo, Trust for Mutual Understanding, administered by Movement Research, Suitecase Fund/ New York Live Arts, the Royal Netherlands Embassy in Romania, as well as over 50 donors that contributed in the campaign Make Dance Happen 2013.

Between June 2012 – December 2014, the ZonaD platform functioned under the name ZonaD – Serial Paradise studio, holding a dedicated space in Bucharest. The opening of this studio in the extremely difficult political and cultural context in Romania in 2012 represented an ambitious initiative, aimed at offering support to both artists and audience interested in the contemporary artistic phenomenon. The lack of proper and constant financial resources needed for the sustainability of the space for the entire year duration did not allowed us to continue it in the initial format. Our decision to close the studio by the end of 2014 was equally caused by the lack of perspective of Romanian NGOs, as, while ZonaD gained its place and recognition on the artistic scene, the context for contemporary arts in Romania has progressively deteriorated. Between 2013-2015, the proposed activities included: reflection-oriented encounters for groups of dance professionals, interdisciplinary artistic residencies, sharing formats for artistic processes, co-production of new works and performance programming, professional development opportunities for dance writers and journalists, and dedicated programmes for general audience, including regular dance classes, movie screenings, artist talks and lectures. The new E-Motional programme is born from the experience of the E-Motional Bodies & Cities project developed between 2011-2013 (visit archive on the project website).

E-Motional promoted an interdisciplinary approach and includes opportunities for dance professionals as well as professionals coming from all movement-based or connected disciplines from the entire EU (visual arts, new media, music, theatre, etc.) in Bucharest, Riga, Porto, Bacau & Luxembourg.

“E-Motional: rethinking dance” was created and organised by Gabriela Tudor Foundation (Bucharest), as project leader, in collaboration with the Association of Professional Dance Choreographers of Latvia(Riga), Fabrica de Movimentos (Porto) and “George Apostu” Cultural Centre (Bacau), and Centre de Création Chorégraphique Luxembourgeois – TROIS C-L (Luxembourg) and in association with “George Enescu” National Museum (Bucharest).

Ioana Nemeș (Bucharest, 1979–New York, 2011) is recognized as one of the remarkably figures of the new generation of Romanian contemporary artists. This publication offers a first overview upon the long-term projects and the singular exhibitions Nemeș has produced during her brief but extraordinary career. Fascinated with time, language and non-linear narrativity, Ioana Nemes’s practice sets off from an ongoing and unconstrained process of self-evaluation. On the slippery edge between art and life, the Monthly Evaluations project, realized in different formats and mediums, marks the artist’s willingness to expose her subjective experiences, dialogues and confrontations with her own context and condition. Both the strenght and the fragility of Ioana Nemeș’s artistic environment contrasts with the precise, almost chirurgical, survey upon her daily moods, desires and life situations on which she based her enigmatic scenarios in form of written statements. Nemeș’s work has been exhibited internationally in museums and contemporary art centers such as Art in General, New York (2011), Secession, Vienna (2010), Istanbul Biennial (2009), Smart Project Space, Amsterdam (2009), U-Turn, Copenhagen (2008), Prague Biennial (2007), Bucharest Biennial (2006), Kunsthalle Fridericianum, Kassel (2006). From the foreword: < The book is dedicated to Ioana Nemeș, in token of our friendship and admiration for the manner in which she understood to translate in her artistic practice the fragile and often conflicting threshold between inner reality and daily reality, between the personal and the abstract, between language and representation. Even after Ioana was no longer among us, we continued to take the same stance with respect to her personality and way of being, to her disciplined and genuine manner of supervising the materialization of her ideas, of conferring matter to subjective time.

When you were next to Ioana Nemeș, you could not remain in a grey zone. Her outspoken manner, the clarity she required, the firm positions she always adopted would definitely cause you to overcome your uncertainties. To quote from project initiators Raluca Iacob Pop & Mihai Iacob: < The project Culture in education aims to support the development of cultural programmes with an educational dimension in Romanian schools through the development of a professional network of people and organisations, and the creation of resources about practices and public policies in the field.

We think that there are some strong benefits in taking part in cultural activities from a young age, and that for each individual and each community it is important to accumulate a relevant cultural capital in a critical manner.

We wish to bring culture in the lives of as many Romanian children and young people as possible, through direct encounters with artists and other culture professionals, through contact with the arts and heritage. These encounters need to take place where children are learning and living and we challenge both the cultural operators and the schools to imagine and develop programmes and activities which are adapted to the context of culture in education.

We are inspired by international programmes such as the Cultural Rucksack from Norway and we plan to learn from their portfolio covering over 10 years of activities.

We set to support artists and cultural organizations to develop their audiences, and we encourage teachers to explore how they can best reach educational objectives through creative partnerships.

From November 2014 to April 2016 we:

• train cultural and educational professionals from across the country;
• debate and share information about legislation, procedures, methods and techniques, daring projects and policy priorities;
• elaborate and publish studies and analysis about the potential of culture in education;
• talk to public authorities about how we can work together to bring quality programmes of cultural activities in schools.

Culture in education is coordinated by the Association CubicMetre – resources for culture and developed in partnership with “Sintagma” Centre for Education and Training, Gabriela Tudor Foundation, the Foundation for an Open Society, and the National University of Theatre and Film “I.L. Caragiale”.

CAROL FACTORY
Constantin Goagea, one of the project creators talks about it in Zeppelin magazine #131:
< Hesper S.A. is a factory in the southern part of the central area of Bucharest, formerly known as Wolf, then Steaua Roșie (Red Star) Factory. For over two years now, Zeppelin works, in partnership with Hesper, to a model of rehabilitation for these spectacular buildings built in 1887: two years of research right on the site, in the Netherlands, Norway, Germany and Russia about how such a place can be transformed, meetings and discussions, business plans, strategies and not as the least important, action.

Following the conferneces and party opening last year officially the place as an event area, 10 rock or electronic music concerts took place here, as well as award ceremonies, and now design or arts fairs, parties and various launches are to happen. Plus the project supported by the EEA Grants funding.

But what does the Carol Halls projects aims to be? Our project means a step by step transformation in spaces for creative industries and events, one that would preserve the identity of industrial architecture and the whole historical patina of the place. The project is a cultural initiative and gave a new name to the place, without claiming itself from the previous ones, still being aware and cherishing the place’s history.

What we proposed is to open a meaningful place for the South-Western area of the city (perhaps not the busiest one in activities and options for free time), to build a platform which would bring diversity of programmes and a lively, active cultural content in Carol Park, both to the residents in the area, but also to many of the active groups in the city. A place we want communities be rendered to the place, and a place rendered to these communities.

The former hill with grapevines turned over 100 years ago in the most avant-garde urban place, reflecting ambitions for technological progress and social change of the country. The park built as an international exhibition, the museum of technics, the first railway station in Bucharest, the astronomic observatory and many other places in the area used to make this site be a meeting place, fun and urban dynamics.>

CONNECTED. Things about future, cities and people
From the project website: < The project investigates the future impact of the new technologies upon the European urbanities. Developing concepts like smart city or smart community, the research seeks to reveal the future social and cultural mutations that tend to better valorize individuals and communities together with their human, creative and entrepreneurial potential. As proposed through narrative and dramatized visions, the European space appears like a dense interconnected territory defined by complex rules and sophisticated standards of human interaction. While the linguistic barriers are probable to be spectacularly overcome through technology and the spaciousness to be diversely perceived due to highly increased future mobility, how this immense space is going to look like and how could Europe be redefined from the cultural and urban points of view? Given this framework, how are we going to use the cultural richness and diversity of Europe, when the globalizing technologies bring progressively more alienations as well as comportments’ and practices’ levelling?

The project includes an exhibition opened simultaneously in Bergen, Amsterdam, Bucharest and Stockholm in the autumn of 2014. The 4 parallel events will be interconnected through video transmissions. The members of the trans-disciplinary groups involved in the project will keep lectures and debates (on City Thinking, Futurology, Art, Architecture, Technology) in those places as well as in other cities relevant for the NS axis of the project. A trans-disciplinary documentation on this subject will be produced and disseminated through a collection of articles published in magazines and on web platforms. A booklet distributed in partnerships with international transport lines will help collect additional ideas and opinions from the general public, which will be presented in the exhibition. A mobile app will stand for the exhibition guideline.>

PHASE 1: FIRST ENCOUNTER. The pilot phase of the project took place at ZonaD – Serial Paradise studio in Bucharest between August 26 – September 23, 2013, with the participation of the following Japanese and Romanian professionals: Zan Yamashita (choreographer), Mikiko Kawamura (choreographer), Shinji Ono (producer of Dance Triennale in Tokyo & programme director of Aoyama Theatre, Tokyo), Norikoshi Takao (dance critic & writer), Ayako Miyake (manager) // Cosmin Manolescu (choreographer & manager, project initiator), Mihaela Dancs (choreographer/ performer), Mihaela Michailov (dance critic, dramaturge), Ștefania Ferchedău (ZonaD/ Eastern Connection manager), Miki Braniște (director of Temps d’Images festival in Cluj). The pilot phase included:

> A workshop-audition led by Zan Yamashita, leading to the selection of choreographer Mihaela Dancs, who joined the project as a result.
> A reflection platform focusing on artistic collaboration context, trends and needs of Japanese and Romanian artistic communities, and challenges of international collaboration.
> An artistic research residency gathering choreographers Zan Yamashita, Cosmin Manolescu, Mikiko Kawamura, concluded with a process sharing at ZonaD. The residency included daily working sessions, improvisations, and working trips.
> A series of connected events events: open presentations of projects held by Japanese and Romanian participants, lectures on Japanese and Romanian contemporary dance by critics Takao Norikoshi and Mihaela Michailov, (anti) aging performance by Madalina Dan & Mihaela Dancs.

PHASE 2. ARTISTIC COLLABORATION 2014
The development of the artistic collaboration has been the pillar of Eastern Connection in 2014. Choreographers Cosmin Manolescu and Zan Yamashita, as main project artists, together with performer Mihaela Dancs and dance critic Takao Norikoshi, as associate artists, have worked for a month in a group research format dedicated to the development of a Romanian/ Japanese collaboration. Two projects have been developed, “the kite”, directed by Cosmin Manolescu, and “Don’t let me down”, created by Zan Yamashita and Mihaela Dancs, and have been presented as works in progress on September 16 and 17, 2014 in the frame of Dance the New Air organised by Aoyama Theatre in Tokyo. The working periods took place at Kinosaki International Art Centre (August 16-21) and Morishita studio in Tokyo (August 25 to September 15). Two open events were held at Kinosaki International Art Centre (August 20), respectively at Aoyama Theatre, Tokyo (September 13), focusing on Eastern Connection with participation of involved artists. Choreographer Cosmin Manolescu also gave a workshop open to Japanese participants in the frame of Dance New Air Festival.

PHASE 3. FOCUS EASTERN CONNECTION 2015/2016
The continuation of Eastern Connection in 2015/2016 is based on the development of artistic collaboration in 2014, as well as the extension of the partnership within the project, through a residency period at Kinosaki International Arts Centre in September 2015. The activities in 2015/2016 capitalize the findings of the first two project years, give shape to the artistic collaboration, which will enter final production and will be premiered and bring the results of the project in front of the audiences in Romania, through a dedicated Eastern Connection showing, including:
> The premiere of “the kite” piece by Cosmin Manolescu, and of “what is contemporary dance” artistic documentary by Tania Cucoreanu & Cosmin Manolescu
> Kite and dance workshop for children at Replika Educational Theatre Centre.
> Presenting “NAMAEGANAI”, the latest work by Zan Yamashita.
> Lectures/ artist talks involving participating artists, Japanese producer Maki Miyakubo.
> Publishing an Eastern Connection newspaper, including articles, essays, interviews, edited by Ștefania Ferchedău, with contributions from the Romanian and Japanese writers, Elena Vlădăreanu and Takao Norikoshi.

[FRAGILE] (2014)
“Alice in Wonderland” fans will simply love this piece. [Fragile] is a heterogeneous performance that proposes an experiential incursion in a universe both realistic and fictional, which questions the fragility and vulnerability of our daily life. Who we are, what do we like, how much do we pay attention to the others, to their way of being and to their emotional needs, how the world we live in influences us. [Fragile] is a dance performance, a choreographic installation, a performative game, a party or simply an experience that works with the multiplicity of our identities. It ultimately talks about the status of the arts, about the responsibility of the artist and the role of the audience.

(anti) aging was created with the intention to be remade after 30 years, in 2041. Mădălina Dan and Mihaela Dancs propose the creative sanatorium format, aiming for delight, relaxation and psychic comfort, enjoyment of pleasure, vitality and voluptuousness, serene acceptance of the present and preservation for the future.

(anti) aging was premiered in October 2011 at the National Museum of Contemporary Arts in Bucharest, then it was presented extensively in Romania (Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Timișoara, Gheorgheni), as well as in Riga and Cork, as part of the E-Motional Bodies & Cities, and in Venice.

“Room 1306 [I Am Myself]” is a performance-installation by Cosmin Manolescu to be presented for a 6-hour span in the space of a hotel room, gallery or private space. The limits of intimacy and togetherness are investigated, while audience becomes (in)voluntarily part of the highly sensorial universe created by the performers. The spectator is transformed in a voyeur witness, watching and being also watched during the performance. Be ready, anything can happen!

For two years, E-Motional has supported the contemporary dance communities from participating countries through a complex programme of artistic research (17 artists, 5 working periods), residencies (18 projects supported, over 30 participating artists), mobility and networking grants (26 exploratory visits), dance management fellowships (13 fellows) and workshops (2 sessions), performance exchanges (15 events), two co-productions and a concluding festival/forum. The professional development of dance artists and managers alike has represented a key element in the project vision.

On its conceptual level, E-Motional has approched the relation between the human body, the urban and geo-political context. What could be emotional within motion and movement and in relation with different cities and contexts (cultural, personal, virtual)? E-Motional referred firstly to a movement that comes out from something, that brings out something, and further plays with the idea of movement in its interior and exterior states. It also referred to Europe in movement, which is understood as an interior continent, with its personal histories and sceneries, forming an emotional map. The project moved in space, a concrete space where the encounters between people led to new approaches of artistic development, a learning opportunity to all those involved.

We believed it is equally important to address both the professional development and the experimental feature of contemporary dance, which is why learning and networking experiences, artistic research and performance exchanges were intertwined in the fabric of E-Motional. Furthermore, the project was open to all interested professionals from contemporary dance: choreographers, dancers, managers, dance critics, as well as to artists from associated fields (visual arts, new media, music) through a variety of activities.

Along its way, E-Motional has tried to find ways to capitalise the results of processes, which are most of the time invisible, such as that of continuous professional development of artists and that of experiment. In a context hungered by consumerism and finished product, the project has celebrated the idea of process and has facilitated the access of the audience to the efervescent creativity of the collaboration between extremely different artists.

E-Motional has represented in itself a generator of new artistic contents, somehow unusual for the more and more atomized contexts in our countries, through the collaboration model it created. By gathering different profiles of artists and different aesthetics to focus on a simple theme (body and city), the project assumed a risk that proved to be succesful. Something came back – and not only that, for instance, the 10 artists participating to the research strand matched, thus giving us the hope that we could maybe patent an inspired formula of matching artists.

Starting from the performative walk as a practice of getting to know and of mapping a neighbourhood, to bringing dance on a radio, to discovering the rhythm of a skate-park or the pace of a pair of boots walking in the rain, through mud, to a performative experiment exploring resonance through movement, or to capturing the present in order to leave it as inheritance to those that we will be 30 years from now and to many other projects and visions, E-Motional has celebrated the artistic processes and experiment.> – excerpts from the project catalog,
