I am honored to share my recent interview with Brainz Magazine, titled “Dr. A. Keith Carreiro on MindWeaving™, Creative Intelligence, and the Making of Meaning.”

In the interview, I reflect upon the lifelong experiences that led to the development of MindWeaving™—an emerging framework for understanding how imagination, critical thinking, memory, intuition, emotion, faith, experience, and discernment can work together in the creation of meaning.

Our conversation also explores:

• Why creativity is more than the production of something new

• How imagination and critical thinking can become creative partners

• The relationship between science, faith, and human flourishing

• The questions raised by artificial intelligence and transhumanism

• What remains distinctly human in an age of increasingly creative machines

• What it truly means to “release the genius within”

At the heart of the interview is a question that has guided much of my work as an educator, writer, musician, and creativity researcher:

“What has been entrusted to me, and how might I faithfully bring it into the world?”

I invite you to read the full conversation and consider how the many threads of your own life might be woven into something meaningful.

I‘m excited to share with you that the second book, the Penitent – Part II, in my The Immortality Wars series, has received a Global Book Award silver medal in the Religious & Spiritual Fantasy category.

These awards are grouped by category and divided into Gold, Silver, Bronze, and Award Finalists.

The logline for this book is as follows:

This novel is the second book in a planned, nine-book series.

In a perilous world beset between good and evil, a young woman, Evangel Blessingvale, is touched by God and by the vision of her future soulmate. Can she merge the power of her belief and the visions she receives with her love for life and for a mighty young warrior?

Evangel’s character, in part, is based upon Joan of Arc.

Evangel is the adopted daughter of the hermit, Matthew Greatheart. Her surety in the goodness of faith and her own strength are tested by recurring visions of The Risen One and prophecies of a lone soldier, Pall Warren. As her visions put her in danger of being labeled a heretic, she must choose whether to spread the gospel she receives or protect her home and adopted family. When the choice is taken from her, headstrong Evangel becomes the leader of a band of believers intent on taking her message to the masses.

The 2024 Global Book Awards team states that its awards “aim to recognize talented authors that have not received the recognition they deserve in self-publishing.”

They further explain their mission goals for their awards by stating,

In this modern age of publishing, books need to be appraised not only by their content and writing style, but also by the way they present and market themselves to the prospective buyer, whether that is in the good ratings it has on important stores like Amazon, its book cover and description, or the number of reviews it has collected. They must also appeal to new readers, so part of the evaluation included a survey asking avid readers to select the top 5 books they enjoyed the most.

I am honored that this novel was chosen for this award!

In The Pilgrim: Part 1, the latest installment in The Immortality Wars series, A. Keith Carreiro delivers a tale that bridges the mystical and the futuristic, thrusting readers into a multilayered saga of war, spirituality, and humanity’s quest for immortality. As the first book in the series’ second trilogy, it lays the foundation for a new chapter in a universe where the lines between science, religion, and morality blur with devastating consequences.

Set in 2562 Old Earth Time, Carreiro juxtaposes the medieval and the advanced. Pall Warren, a sergeant from an experimental medieval world created by future scientists, finds himself in a galactic war waged by cyborgs, corrupt elites, and power-hungry factions. His combat skills and rare spiritual abilities make him a sought-after anomaly in a reality dominated by human greed and scientific hubris. This blending of timelines and technologies creates a world rich in complexity, immersing readers in a theater of war that feels both alien and familiar.

Pall Warren stands out as a deeply human protagonist, carrying the scars of his past life and the burdens of his newfound reality. His journey is not merely one of survival but of profound self-discovery. Carreiro excels in portraying Pall’s internal struggle, balancing his warrior instincts with his search for meaning and connection. This duality makes him an anchor in a story teeming with action, philosophical musings, and metaphysical challenges. From the ethereal hues of light that transform into shadowy figures to the hauntingly surreal landscapes, Carreiro paints with a vivid palette that captivates the imagination. The prologue alone is a sensory feast, plunging readers into a storm of cascading colors, clashing swords, and ominous prophecies. This visual intensity carries throughout the book, creating a cinematic quality. One standout sequence involves Pall’s confrontation with a shape-shifting creature named Ünger. The beast’s grotesque transformations and menacing chant epitomize the story’s melding of the mystical and the monstrous. Moments like this highlight Carreiro’s ability to craft scenes that are as unsettling as they are mesmerizing.

Thematically, The Pilgrim: Part 1 delves into humanity’s age-old questions: What drives us to seek immortality? At what cost? And how do faith and science coexist in such pursuits?

The pacing alternates between contemplative and kinetic, ensuring a balanced reading experience. Action sequences are carefully crafted, such as the climactic stairwell battle where Pall and Ari face down a squad of replicants. These moments of high stakes adrenaline are tempered by quieter, introspective passages that allow the story’s emotional and philosophical undertones to shine.

As the first entry in the second trilogy of The Immortality Wars, The Pilgrim: Part 1 serves as both a continuation and a new beginning. Whether you’re drawn to tales of epic battles, philosophical inquiries, or deeply human stories of love and resilience, this book has something to offer and leaves you hungry for the next installment.

I was working with Midjourney earlier this month to help me generate visual images of my writing. According to Gareth B. Davies (July 31, 2024), who is a professional coach and ghostwriter based in New Zealand, there are some key takeaways about Midjourney:

• “Midjourney is an AI-powered image generation tool that creates unique images based on text prompts.

• “It uses a deep learning neural network trained on vast image-text datasets to understand and generate visual content.

• “Users interact with Midjourney through a Discord server, submitting text prompts to generate images.

• “The tool employs diffusion techniques and transformer models to produce high-quality, creative images across various styles.

• “Midjourney can be used for concept art, illustrations, marketing visuals, and educational purposes, among other applications.”

I believe I am getting better at using it. The image I have shared with you here is one that represents Pall Warren and Evangel Blessingvale.
They represent two major protagonists that are highly featured in my series “The Immortality Wars.” They are soulmates but are living, at first, in two respective kingdoms, and in two slightly different time lines. They meet in what appear to be visions, and under extraordinary circumstances. Evangel is Pall’s spiritual protector, keeping him safe while he journeys through a minefield of challenges.

A. Keith Carreiro Interviewed by Frank Falvey.

On Tuesday, 2 August 2022, I was interviewed by Frank Falvey, host of Frank Presents, at the Franklin Community Cable Access TV Studio in Franklin, MA.

I was last interviewed by Frank on Friday, 5 April 2019. It was great to see him and to share with him the progress made with my writing since that last interview. At that time in 2019, we had discussed the first two books in the Penitent trilogy. In the latest interview, I was able to talk about the first three books of The Immortality Wars series, as well as the completion of the manuscript for the fourth book, the Pilgrim – Part I.

A view of the first trilogy in The Immortality Wars series, as well as Stephen King’s Hearts in Suspension (2016).

We also discussed the chapter I have written in Stephen King’s book (November 2016), Hearts in Suspension. Based on King’s book (1999), Hearts in Atlantis. Hearts in Suspension is a collaboration with twelve of Steve’s former classmates and friends at the University of Maine at Orono from 1966 to 1971. It provides not only a glimpse of these tumultuous times but offers a glimpse of King’s life during this era of student activism and antiwar protests.

I also discussed with Frank an eBook I published in March of this year, Send Down the Master in Person: Reflections on Adolf Eichmann.

This poem is a tribute to my parent’s generation. It pays homage to those who fought for the Allies and to those who contributed to the Allies’ war effort against the Axis powers. While it is about Adolf Eichmann, it also refers to the evil that existed in the world, especially the horror unleashed by Nazi Germany, and the hell that Hitler and his ilk waged against humanity. The poem reveals a critical raison d’être of the war. It touches upon the importance of and the sacrifices made by the Greatest Generation in defeating this dreadful scourge of genocide, and its ability to vanquish such insufferable barbarity.

The perspective of the poem is from a fictitious Mossad agent who takes part in capturing Eichmann on 11 May 1960 in San

Fernando, a suburb of Buenos Aires, Argentina.

It is ironic that the face of evil seems often clothed in plain sight. Send Down the Master in Person: Reflections on Adolf Eichmann is dedicated to all those who suffer from such wicked bigotry, hatred, and intolerance.

I have received some outstanding editorial reviews to date. Here’s one of them quoted below:

Readers’ Favorite Review

Review #2: Review by Tammy Ruggles

5 Stars – Congratulations on your 5-star review!

“Send Down the Master in Person: Reflections on Adolf Eichmann by A. Keith Carreiro begins with the author’s exquisite poem about “The Greatest Generation” or World War II era soldiers, families, victims, and others living and dying in the shadow of the Holocaust and Adolf Eichmann. Told from the point of view of a fictional Mossad agent, this annotated poem rises to the level of important literature, accompanied by historical facts that follow it. Part art, part history, part fiction, but all a piece of work that gives a bow and a word of gratitude to everyone affected by this dark chapter in history.

“Carreiro has a talent for blending history with poetry, which makes for an irresistible read. The author goes from sweeping generalized observations of the horror of the Nazis to fine details that make you feel that you are right at his side witnessing it all, and living it all. In a way, you feel that you are taking in a film, listening to the narrator

explaining what is unfolding on the screen, or in this case, unfolding in the past. The words reach deep to pull out painful imagery, then take you to lofty heights that reflect both hope and tragedy. The poet seeks to take us into the mindset of war and those who perpetrated and endured agony and death.

“The phrasing and word choice never let you forget you’re reading a poem, but later, in the endnotes, you feel taken into almost documentary-style facts and images. It’s amazing how the author brings history to the present with words and photos, which makes it easy for readers to compare past tragedy to modern-day pain and strife, and hopefully, learn from it. Send Down the Master in Person by A. Keith Carreiro would be perfect to have in a classroom, library, or individual collection. Don’t miss this transformative work.”

I hope that you enjoy watching this interview. Please let me know if you have any comments you would like to share with me.

In this third book, warrior Pall Warren goes in search of master bowman John Savage, finding him in the middle of a battle. There is a war going on in a port city where priest Kosem Mungadai, a high-level master of the occult arts, is leading an attack against this realm. Mungadai uses dark magic to fight this battle. He incorporates evil creatures such as imps, demons, jinn and succubi-like creatures called Slakes. Pall joins Savage in this brutal fight between good and evil. He must not only rely on his gifts with hand-to-hand combat to defeat the enemy, he also has to rely on his spiritual gifts to defeat the evil power that is permeating through the battlefield.

While this is the third book in the series, it was the first one for me to read. Even though the author does well with catching the reader up with the story, I wish I had read the first two books because I felt like I would have been more enmeshed in what was happening. I was intrigued by returning characters who obviously already played critical roles in this series. I did use the handy Cast of Characters section at the end of this story to help me stay caught up with who they were.

Overall, I really enjoyed reading The Penitent. Carreiro did a masterful job in creating compelling characters that continue to evolve as the story progresses. He takes us inside their minds so that we can gain insight into who they are and what motivates them. He also creates scenes he brings to life through his words. I often felt like I was watching the drama rather than reading about it. I loved this, because despite being a fantasy, it felt very real to me. The espionage also added a great deal of suspense.

As noted earlier, while the novel is set in the future, it appears to take place during medieval times, where people have to really on their skills, spiritual beliefs, or dark magic, instead of technology, in order to survive. I loved this component because it made things more complex. I also enjoyed the spiritual aspects that were involved because it made this fantasy unique. Readers who enjoy fantastical science fiction will enjoy this series.

It pays homage to those who fought for the Allies and to those who contributed to the Allies’ war effort against the Axis powers. While it is ostensibly about Adolf Eichmann, it also refers to the evil that existed in the world, especially the horror unleashed by Nazi Germany, and the hell that Hitler and his ilk waged against humanity. The poem reveals a critical raison d'être of the war. It touches upon the importance of and the sacrifices made by the Greatest Generation in defeating this dreadful scourge of genocide, and its ability to vanquish such insufferable barbarity.

“The Penitent: Part I by Keith Carreiro is a sprawling sci-fi fantasy novel.”

                                                                     — Literary Titan

“It also has a healthy dash of horror, war, and tragedy. Needless to say, it is a little bit intense but it is a satisfying and well-told story. It is about Pall Warren, an ostracized young man who does not know why he is doomed to live on the outskirts of life. Yet he makes peace with this and continues his difficult existence. Slowly, his background is revealed to us, and Pall finds meaning in his journey to find the truth. He pairs up with a mysterious archer, John Savage, and the two form an uneasy but loyal partnership.

“Pall lives a tough life and it was difficult to read about his daily pain and struggle, almost as terrible as his past. He has a lot of grit and moral strength and manages to navigate life with his head held high. John is, as they say, a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma. I found his parts very entertaining as he was a droll and captivating character- probably my favorite. Towards the end, Evangel is also briefly mentioned- I’m very interested to know what part she plays in Pall’s life.

“The story starts off slow and doesn’t shy away from laying out the atrocities and horror of Pall’s life. Some parts are gruesome, violent, and downright depressing but I think those parts were important in forming Pall. They may seem gratuitous, but as the story developed, I could see that this is what made Pall a consistent and strong character.

“The author brilliantly displays the psychology of people amidst war. The ruthlessness, and ultimately, the pointlessness of political struggles seemed to be the root of evil to me.”

“The Penitent: Part I is an emotional rollercoaster of a story that looks at both sides of life. It shows how hope and despair can easily be a part of one’s fate when one has little control. Ultimately, it is about digging to find the truth and to have an unflinching moral code against one’s enemies. That’s what makes the characters and this story so likable. The nail-biting ending was superb and I nearly wanted to scream at the suspense. A thrilling beginning to a riveting epic fantasy series.”

Creating a Trilogy of Trilogies

A. Keith Carreiro
A. Keith Carreiro Author Interview

The Penitent – Part 1 begins an epic fantasy series spanning three novels. Did you know how deep the story would go when you first started?

I wanted to write a series like this one for a long time now. When I first started planning The Immortality Wars I knew it would be at least one trilogy. It very quickly morphed into the idea of creating a trilogy of trilogies. I wanted to create a series of realities, in part, that the characters in the story would experience. So the tale is built around a thought experiment that is configured like a Russian doll. I later learned that a work containing nine related books is called an ennealogy. I felt I needed such an expansive framework to house the full length of this saga on a comfortable basis.

I enjoyed the relationship between Pall and John. What were some sources that informed the development of their relationship?

One of the sources informing the development of their relationship with one another is the story of Robin Hood and Little John. However, I wanted to develop their relationship in a different way than it is cast with Robin and Little John, especially in their being more independent of one another. Each has a unique set of skills, background, and way of life. Yet, they are fierce warriors in their own right. When I originally introduced them in the story, one was going to kill the other. Curiously, they both immediately rebelled at this thought.

Was there anything personal, or taken from your own life, and placed in the story?

There is a sense of loss and of tragedy that imbues the story, as well as a love of nature and a deep sense of love of family that are all taken from my own life. Equally so, is my experience of and commitment to God that permeates Pall’s story. For example, there is a miraculous healing of Captain Joseph Martains. It is taken from a real-life experience I had in 1973. A professor was brought back to life as a result of a terrible fall he had from a roughly made staging placed against his house. He fell headfirst onto his cement driveway. No one expected him to live. However, God had other plans than death for the professor at that point in his life.

What has been the most surprising feedback you’ve received from readers about your series?

I am surprised at the reaction some readers have experienced from the intensity of the story, particularly the paranormal and combat scenes. These points in the story are not meant to be moments of gratuitous violence or unspeakable horror alone. They are set within the plot for a variety of reasons some of which would become spoilers if I explained why they are occurring there. Hopefully, I’ve written a tale that makes readers intrigued, on edge, and looking forward to what happens on every page that they read.
